Michelle, I use the same process, with a small modification I put two waste baskets together and it traps a few more of the larger pieces. I can’t take credit for coming up with this idea a gardening friends told me about it. Happy Gardening from Z10B Southern California.
That is a fair question. In the ground, probably not a big deal, maybe in the seedling pots, the bigger pieces displace too much soil. Hmmm.... I feel an experiment brewing. LOL. Thank you!

Thanks for the tip! I'm definitely going to try that.
That's a pretty slick trick. Sure beats dealing with 2x2s and hardware cloth.
It was easy and finer than my 2x2 and 1/2" mesh, too.
what a great trick -- will be trying that got one in my bathroom minus the grocery store plastic bag
Awesome. Use what we have! ❤️
Yaass! Love a good gardening hack! Thanks, Michelle. (:
You're so welcome! I love the other comment about layering them. Gonna try that!
The heavy chunky left over on top is easy to turn into biochar with a quick burn. No more chunky soils + char introduction = rain forest mix.
Oh I love that idea! Thank you.
Love this idea. I'm kinda thinking cat litter scoop + basket.
Go for it! The other viewer suggested two baskets to sift finer, too.
Wow! That's amazing!!
Thank you. Easy peasy. ;) 😉
Thank You! 😊
You're welcome 😊
Look i appreciate the ingenuity, I really do. But is there any actual proof seeds legitimately benefit from sifted soil? I'm skeptical

Lots of worms people use those little trash baskets to sort castings too. 🪱👍🏼😁
Ooohhhh. Yeah. Another great use.
