- What is hugelkultur?
This German word, pronounced hoo-gell-culture or hoo-gull-culture, refers to a cool way to fill raised beds that are practically self-sustaining.
Instead of just filling your frame with soil, hugelkultur beds are built with layers of woody materials like branches, logs, and twigs at the base. These slowly decompose, feeding the soil with nutrients and creating pockets that hold onto water. It's like giving your plants a built-in buffet and personal water reservoir - all for free!
Hugelkultur works fantastically in raised beds! And with taller raised beds like the Birdies Metal Raised bed, you have more space for those woody layers, creating an even more powerful and long-lasting growing environment.

Wondering what to plant in a taller raised garden bed?
Here are some Great Choices for a Taller Raised Bed with Easy Harvest (including vining plants):
Tomatoes (determinate or dwarf varieties): These remain compact, but for indeterminate varieties, consider using a trellis for easy harvesting of higher fruits.
Pole beans: Train them up a trellis on the side of the raised bed for easy picking throughout the season.
Peppers: Most pepper varieties will do well, but a trellis may be helpful for supporting heavier plants or those with sprawling branches.
Leafy Greens: Kale, spinach, lettuce, Swiss chard - all remain easy to harvest.
Herbs: As with leafy greens, harvesting is often simple.
Vining Cucumbers & Squash: These are perfect candidates for trellises. Train them to grow vertically for easier harvesting and to save space in your raised bed.
Trellis Tips:

the sides of any metal bed will bulge- I have the same shirt made for me by my daughter a couple years ago she made 3 one for her for me and for dad!
I bet Dad gets some fun looks for the t-shirt. A little bulging is definitely expected, and my caving on the original beds overall was much less than Mark's from Self Sufficient Me.
i think you also need to take in account that those beds would be full of soil so the results would be different -- i love my vego beds -- and i got a round berties bed to add to the back yard also -- so that was my two cents worth -- these metal beds hold up and are worth the money -- watch for the sales and use the codes for the discounts -- maybe get one or two a year -- save your back and keep out some of the critters --LOVE my t-shirt michelle!!!
