About Trout. Exactly what it sounds like .
Guides Day Off: Rethinking The San Juan River
The San Juan River suffers from an identity crisis. Often described as an over crowded hell hole akin to a Black Friday TV sale at Walmart with lazy fish and impossibly small flies. But there is another San Juan. Rethink. This river is what you make it. We love the San Juan here at About Trout and try to fish it as much as we can on our days off. It is truly one of the best kept secrets in streamer fishing. If you want to think beyond the bobber, we're here to help. We also got you if you want to nymph.

Northern California Recap

Recently I traveled to Northern California to give our presentation "A Guides Approach to the Water." In between clubs, I had the opportunity to fish with some friends and dive deeper into what Northern California has to offer the fly angler. Fly Fishing for Bass: The Float and Fly Rig

While it is About Trout, I had the opportunity to fish some bass in Northern California recently. Growing up, I used to fly fish for bass a lot. It has become a rarity and the float and fly rig was new to me. I hope it works for you on your local still water. THE Tornado Anchor
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.2 месяца назад
I have been a tornado anchor user for the past four ish years. Is it worth getting this excited about an anchor? Yes. It is lead free, the edges catch on all sorts of substrate and it truly does hold. The trick to the tornado anchor is throwing more rope than you're used to so it can set up on its side and "bite". If you're a new boat owner or looking to upgrade, it is absolutely worth it.

5.3 Things About Fly Fishing I WISH I Knew Earlier
Confluence Outfitters guides are outstanding! Best fishing experience of my life was with Colin on Fall River a couple weeks ago. He's an excellent guide and teacher. Now if we could just get the temperatures in NorCal to go back to something resembling normality, I could go fishing again!
Colin is a stud!
@@AboutTrout You should see the gorgeous panoramic photo he took of me fishing that day. I was staying up there with Val Atkinson and HE said it was a great photo. I had an art print made and hung it in my recording studio. I probably should send him more tip money! Seriously, that picture means a lot to me. Not just a pedestrian effort.
Some big fish, especially that rainbow.
People are haters because they go out and do the same thing over and over. They wonder why others are doing the same and instead of trying something different like your team does, they whine and complain about crowds and "how it used to be." That's why you guys are the only ones I recommend as guides on the Juan.
Give the San Juan some gravel. That way the fish (hybridized native Colorado River cutthroat transitioning to more pure cutthroat) can build reeds, and to support a caddis or stonefly hatch. I wish I was there; personally, the three-hours-away drive has essentially morphed into two-decades-past.
Wow German browns!!
Where’s the tenkara footage?
Probably from the beginning of the quality water to Texas Hole? Tenkara flies, or rods, or both? My question is who is still fishing with yarn egg patterns that essentially resemble Pautzkies Salmon eggs? Me, I just seem to foul-hook them using #20 disco midges.
Every fish in this video was taken on a streamer or a dry. Eggs work well on the Juan.
I need more☕️☕️🤣🤣🤣
Thanks for checking it out!
B roll on point
Appreciate you
Nice to see an out of stater showcasing the natural beauty California still has. Getting tired of everyone shitting on our state although I will agree California does have its problems and crappy government but California is not just 1 big LA or SF
California is incredible! It’s also forever stamped on my passport. I was born there lol.
Making me homesick!
oh yeah!!
Let’s go! Now on to the Truckee…?
Norcal baby! Hope all is well brother,
Love it, thanks☕️☕️
I can attest to the "any time, anywhere under any conditions." If Pop's reads this post he will likely know who I am....he knows what a disciple I am. I cannot tell you how many thousands of fish I have caught on this fly, bull bream, chinquapin bream, crappie, bass, catfish, grass carp, carp, speckled trout, reds, browns, cutts, bows, and even turtles. When I say thousands, I mean thousands. I live in Louisiana and do a lot of panfishing and make trips out west, as well, to Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico. Every body of water I have fished I have hammered the fish on this fly. If you are familiar with Silvercreek in Picabo, Idaho, then you know how challenging it is. Fishing with a guide, I as catching a few small browns and bows then switched myself over to the Pop's Brown Bugger and it was almost every throw. The guide, who was working with my wife, came running down the river bank to see what I had on....he even fell down he was so excited. He asked for one and I handed him 4 or 5. Later that evening, down by the footbridge where the monster browns hang out, I landed a rainbow that he said was the biggest bow he has seen come off out of Silvercreek. I caught him on the Pop's Bugger. Later that evening the guide called me and invited my on a free trip with him to The Big Lost. He was made a believer.
Nicolas Cage also prefers a waist pack. Thanks for the review.
Big facts!
Bass on Morgan James....lets go!!!
Let’s do it!
Whaaaaaaaat? I didn’t know you knew fly fishing for bass! 😂😎
Gotta keep things mysterious
@@AboutTrout that’s good man! Glad to see you out there enjoying yourself 🎣
I'm quite sure a size 16 or 18 would be great. Thank you. Just curious though did you mean to say size 18 as is shown in the materials list.
I meant to say 18. FM hooks in this model run a tad big
@@AboutTrout Thank you. I've been using Hanak hooks, then I started using FullingMill hooks. I measured and found that besides the bigger hook gap of the FullingMill 5125, the only difference between the Hanak H450BL and FM5125 is the hook length. So, a Hanak H450BL #14 is essentially equal to a FullingMill FM5125 #16 (besides the hook gap).
Awesome video, Ima try this on my lake! I seen James on the Juan and he may think you’re his friend “Chris,” but he is cool guy and he is NOT a jerk on the water lol.
😂😂😂😂
Lots of bass fishermen use Thill pro series slip unweighted float with adjustable bobber stops. I bet your set-up could be used on a spinning rod too.
To my knowledge it was first done with conventional and adapted to fly. The conventional bass world is always on the cutting edge.
Hey James ☕️☕️ I do bass fish and catfish, but when it is to warm for trout I love hooking into a god catfish 🤣🤣🤣 thanks for all your content 😉👍
Have you tried the float and fly before? Or do you mostly strip flies?
@@AboutTrout Yes I do. Ok, when I target catfish, I use a Y2K or a squirmy worm. The squirmy I call the Medusa, I put two or more squirmy on a jig hook with a 3mm tungsten bead. I just have to find what part of the water column they are in. It takes a little time but it will happen. I never fish it right on the bottom. This chapter of my life all I am able to do is fish from a boat or still water. I am have both knees and hips replaced. Then my back, I still water fish from a chair. And I am learning a lot, I am out almost every day. Really enjoy your content it a fresh perspective.
Spotted bass get no love. Great fish. Cool technique with the swivels. They are key to keeping line twist out of heavy/awkward rigs.
love learning new techniques like this
Great to hear! It was a blast trying something new.
I’ve had really good luck with poppers and kreelexes. Never thought to try something like that, pretty neat
At those depths, I'd love to see a side by side with someone fishing a midge tip and stripping those leeches back.
I’m not sure. It would be cool to test. I know the Cali guys lead with this technique when guiding but indicator fishing is also the most user friendly for newer anglers.
How are you fishing this rig? Is it mainly just chuck it and leave it or are you twitching it back?
We just chucked it and left it for the most part. The bass were suspended off the banks. I have never fished this way and just let my guide buddy lead me through the process lol. Fun way to fish.
@@AboutTrout As "they" say, "don't guide the guide" and there's also "When in Rome....."
@@coreytohme9861 nah fam. Bens energy has opened my mind to all powers of fly fishing
@@AboutTrout Exactly. And if you wouldn't have let him lead the way on his water, you would never have been enlightened.
Interesting. Would like to have seen how this rig casts, and if you guys altered your casting stroke in any way to accommodate the unusual setup.
Fishing these longer rigs and heavier set ups we used a “scissor strip” when setting. Casting wise the 6wts did a good job of turning the rig over. Hesitating on the back cast and letting the rod properly load was key.
@@AboutTrout Thanks, makes sense. Will give it a try.
Awesome. For those touchy fish. Bobber down!!
My neck of the woods.
You talked about how this a great vise but it sounds like you had to change your style significantly to use it.
Just for filming. The base is light so if bump it, the fly will get knocked out of focus of my Marco lens in its manual setting. It’s a great vise for travel but my Renzetti master is what I tie on daily. It’s a great solution for travel but I wouldn’t recommend it as your daily driver.
Love all three of mine
There’s no such thing as having too many vises. Love it
Totally agree - Golden Trout Lanyard + a submersible backpack is the way to go for filming/fishing. That peak design cube looks dope. Is fishpond making travel humidors yet though?
Sage had a travel humidor not sure if it’s still in production
$10,000 in cash? I thought you were a big timer.
No oil money habibbi
@@AboutTrout I forgot, you have to work for a living. Sorry for my assumption.
I’m so glad you’re quitting fishing for rap. Let us know when your album drops.
100 will do
hey i recognized those places
have broke 2/3 of my echo rods in section 2 or 3 on mediumish trout. no high sticking or over horsing i promise. both came from trident, both were stored in the rod vault majority of winter. suggestions? thoughts? neither were 1 year old yet
The rod vault most likely out a “hot spot” in the blank or you nicked the blank while casting creating a hot spot that broke during the fight. It does happen, I’ve done it
boot review please
I look forward to the day when I get to pack like this & finally take a fishing trip outside of Missouri. I fished in Iowa once, but other than that, all my experience has been in Missouri.
We are blessed up in the state of MO! But there’s so much water out there to explore. Go to the Juan!
Thanks for the info James☕️☕️
So guide flies are synonymous to beginner patterns.
Pretty much anything that’s quick and easy to tie or has a bunch of steps stripped out of it.
so so nice ., I ordered twice :) Perfect for Hawaii my braddahs !
I really like the new zipper.
Thank you!
You bet!
Deployment of aluminium alloy in contact with brass and cast alloy is an invitation for galvanic corrosion at the aluminium alloy under the anodised surface treatment; generating a white powdery aluminium oxide residue and surface micro- pitting. Need to be careful to wipe down to remove hand/skin sweat bearing 'salts' particularly in high humidity conditions. I've personally seen varoius degrees of this problem on three different Renzetti vises. At this price they should be 100% stainless.
Very much appreciated and thanks for sharing! Personally, I own two of them, one at home and one at work. I absolutely love them and have been tying on my 1st one for years. To me, it’s the best on the market for the price and a worthy investment! If in doubt, just compare it to the cost of your favorite fly rod and the value of it. Shouldn’t your vice be as important as that?!?
Absolutely. The 2k seems to get no love but it’s packed with features and a lot of vise for the money. Thanks for checking out the channel.
Hello, do you need custom fishing gloves? We are a custom glove manufacturer.
Nice enough video but I could hardly hear you, even at full volume.
Sounds perfect on my end…?
You’re lucky
My grial travel vise would be a Waldron Travel Vise, nothing can match it
I didn’t know LAW made a travel vise. Thanks for sharing. Just looked it up and it’s beautiful and packs down small. Can’t find any in production anymore. A piece of art.
@@AboutTrout A piece of art indeed, i dream with one of them for sure! Sadly as he passed away there isn't any chance anymore, except for a second hand one.
Fantastic video bud. Great job. I'm going to tie a few of these to take with me to the S. Platte in a couple of weeks
Awesome! Stoked you like it. Please report back if the S. Platte fish like it as much as our fish in the Juan. Good luck!
Are these what they’re using on the San quan? In a size 20? Thank you!!!! Tight lines🕷️🐛🐜!!!!!
Absolutely! The San Juan has a large baetis population.
Thank you
