    This is several cuts above the normal fly fishing video on RUclips. Great work, James. Here's a suggestion for a follow-up video. Towards the end, you mention how experience has made you change how you go about fly fishing. A video devoted to specific changes in your fishing methods or approaches would be a treat.

    Great to hear you learned to cast from Mel Krieger's "Essence of Fly-Casting". I remember when both the book and the tape came out. It has the best illustration and explanation about the casting arc; path of the rod tip; and resulting size of the loop - what causes wide loops, tight loops, and tailing loops. I was teaching the Orvis West Coast Fly-Fishing schools at the time (1987-1997) and mangling (managing) the Fishing department of the Orvis San Francisco store when I wasn't teaching the schools. He brought the first few deliveries to me at the store because his company, Club Pacific, was in SF too. I recommended both of them a lot and it was very popular in the store.
    Mel was one of those folks who was "easy to know". That is, he had the ability to make you feel comfortable, like you've known him for years, even if you just met him. He was a great person to be around - a very positive influence on everyone around him. He was passionate about fly-casting of course, and was engrossing to listen when he talked of it as you well know if you have his video. I was lucky enough to actually know him for years and often ran into him at the Golden Gate Park Casting Ponds until I left the Bay area in September of 1997.
    Mel's approach to "Western-style Fly-Casting" was simple, easily explained, easily followed, and generated good results in a very short amount of time. It was also the basic style we taught in our schools. He was captivating to listen to. I was quite honored when he asked Dean Schubert (Orvis West Coast Schools Director) and I to participate as members of the FFF Fly-Casting Instructor Certification Committee to help develop the Federation of Fly-fisher's casting instructor certification program. He asked me to write out a description of our program, what we did, and how we did it. He then shared that with the rest of the committee. He did that with all the members. Although I was transferred by Orvis to the East Coast in 1998 and was living in Virginia at the time, it was a shock to hear of his passing in 2008. It was an illness of short duration, at least as far as anyone knew.

    • @AboutTrout
      @AboutTrout  Год назад

      Mel was a legend in the sport. Small world I worked at Orvis Tysons Corner store #55 intermittently from 2004-2007. He came into the store when I was 14 and it was the first and only time I’ve ever been “star struck”. He was kind and giving with his time. I wonder if we ever crossed paths in Va. I was also part of the Northern Virginia chapter of TU.

    • @dgracia18
      @dgracia18 Год назад

      @@AboutTrout I moved from San Francisco to Vermont in 1998 to become webmaster for the Orvis fledgling E-commerce site, so I worked in the HQ then. He came out a couple of times but about all I had time for was a "Hi! How you doing?" as he was always in the company of Dave or Perk when he was there. I moved to Roanoke, VA in 2005 to be the Rod and Tackle Supervisor in the contact center and never did see him come by there. He was a one-of-a-kind to be sure.
      If you came out to the fly-fishing show near Charlottesville in either 2006 or 2007, I was there. Or if you made it out to Roanoke for the Sportsman's show they had there, I worked that too. If you came up to the home office outside of Manchester before June of 2005 when I moved to VA, we might have crossed paths then, especially if you fished the pond out back of the headquarters. I remember a contingent of folks came up from Tyson's Corner once when I was there. They brought with them a Dover's Peach fly; fished in the Pond...and it worked! I met Dover through the Roanoke chapter of TU in 2005 after I transferred to Roanoke. He was the president of the Roanoke chapter of TU at the time. Orvis carried that fly for a number of years, not sure if they still do. Fulling Mills still lists it and they tied it for us at the time. We might of crossed paths.

    I live in Northern Michigan. We have a lot of trout streams. Some hold really big fish but generally 20" and up is considered a really good fish (browns and rainbows) not including migratory fish, they get 25+ pounds. Brookies of course are scaled down. 15" really nice, 18" or bigger is an automatic win at trout camp. Generally, the winner is a 25"+ rainbow, or sometimes a huge brown, but an 18" native brookie is really something special. We have Great Lakes brook trout called Coasters that get really big like salmon or steelhead, but we aren't really talking about them.
    Edit: we catch a lot of small ones to every big one.

    Love your channel! You are absolutely correct about “fishing reports.” Many of the reports I have found come from conversations the fly shops have with their customers. I haven’t been into a shop yet where I wasn’t asked, “Been fishing lately?” When I tell them I have, and what worked for me on a specific water, I will always see it in the report that comes out later that week. The shop guys don’t get to fish as much as many of us. We are their info.

    • @tmitchellis
      @tmitchellis Год назад

      @@Juan-yh1us While such streams boast large natural populations of fish (and large fish) and are certainly worth checking out, they also see a lot of fishing pressure and you're more likely to have company. I favor class I and II water, where I've had much better fishing success and enjoyment. A gold medal designation does not tell you how the water fishes.

    • @AboutTrout
      @AboutTrout  Год назад

      @@Juan-yh1us they all have fish. “Gold medal” and “blue ribbon” are terms that get tossed around by a lot of people. I fished that river religiously and, it has some of the most incredible Smallmouth Bass and Big…… Big Catfish of the Blue and Flathead variety. Many years later I discovered the Gunnison River, practically in my back yard. Some of the greatest fly fishing to ever be had. I revere the Gunnison as a special high mark in my life.
