- In this video we will spin up two flies on that catch fish on the San Juan everyday of the year. My guide boxes are full of these and I hope they help you on the Juan or a river near you. These flies are more of a style than particular pattern and you can change the colors to match the forage base in your local river.
Tubing Midge
Hook: Daiichi 1273 (16 in the video but we fish them 10-22)
Thread: UTC 70 Red
Rib: Micro Tubing, Brown or Red
Resin: Solarez Bone Dry
Pig Sticker
Hook: Daiichi 1870 (14 in the video but we fish them in larger sizes too)
Body/Rib: Glo Brite Floss Shade 3, Red
Resin: Solarez Bone Dry
😎don’t forget to mention to de-barb that pig sticker. I know, it’s a given for most of us. Always great info.
Hey James,
All that squeaking confirms James has got a Ratatouille situation going on... I knew it all along!
Last week I caught a fish on the Juan that, in addition to my fly, had an annelid still hooked in its mouth. The annelid was trailing tippet still connected to a jiggy mop fly. I was stoked, caught a fish and got 2 free flies.
Love the tubing tie in point tip! Also kudos on the old school finger whip finish. 💣
Always enjoy watching your videos. I have been tying red larvae with small or medium spanflex which make a great pattern. Keep the vids coming. Happy days
The first larva worked really well at munoz. I had to down size to a 20 though.
Now you have to combine the two together and make it articulated. I call it the wiggle worm. Works every time, 43% of the time.
A purple pig sticker with a hot pink collar is deadly up here man!
Noticed your thread was fluorescent. Does the "flourescent" make a difference? Seems like flies tied with material that glows bright under a UV light catch more fish.... Or is it just me?
love me some easy guide flies. however, i have no idea how to nymph when it's not a perdigon. would love a video on Rigging non euro nymphs like these... (if you have one already can you link to it?) like do you use this as your dropper fly on a euro rig or is this best for a bobber and split shot nymph... i know there's nuance about how you use any fly but there's a baseline and then the variations stem out from that
I am not trying to be a wise-guy, but I'd seriously like to know if the fish can tell any difference between a San Juan and a red Gamagatsu Octopus hook? For the record I've seen a number of trout strike a bare red Gamagatsu hook.
Skip the thread and the rib and just put some resin on the red hook and your ready to fish
Those wreck fish on most tail waters in Wyoming
I heard Chaz say that these don’t work.
