My AWD Tesla Model Y is RWD most of the time. So what is the point of AWD?
Tesla offer a simple choice - Rear Wheel Drive or All Wheel Drive. The RWD cars have more range, the AWD cars are faster and more powerful.
I bought the AWD Model Y as I live in Scotland. Our winters bring a lot of snow and ice. So the front motor will have much better traction. Won't it?
Thanks to my Teslogic box I can see what each motor is doing. As I test fast roads, twisty roads and very steep roads, I am astonished with what I see. And what is this thing where one motor is providing power and the other regenerating power???
Welcome to Just Get a Tesla, where I do a series of tests and challenges to help show people that instead of shopping around for EVs they should just get a Tesla......

Another Tesla Software Update! This one helps the car steer - but what does it do?
Просмотров 22 тыс.День назад
Tesla is an car like any other, but it is also a computer on wheels. And that computer has just received another new feature! Autopilot is brilliant, but its a world away from Full Self Driving - which we can't get in Europe. This update makes Autopilot better for anywhere outside North America. They get snazzy Full Self Driving - the rest of the world does not. So we need this! Welcome to Just...
The Week of Hell? 3 long trips in my Model Y loaded with people and stuff. Will it be hell...?

On my way back from holiday I need to drive 400 miles loaded with the family and luggage. A good test for the car? Perhaps - but as soon as I get back I have ANOTHER 800 miles to drive, using the car as a van. 3 long days. Fully loaded. Lots of charging - this is going to be a good test of the car's capabilities! I left my Tesla parked for a week - how do I stop the battery going flat?
Просмотров 17 тыс.21 день назад
Its time for a family holiday (finally!!!!) so we Tesla it down to Manchester airport for a week in Spain. There is a LOT of talk about Sentry mode and "vampire drain" - where people park their car and the battery drains FAST. But what is Sentry mode, how does it work, and what does it do to the battery over a long period of time...? Welcome to Just Get a Tesla, where I do a series of tests and...

My recent experience in a Polestar 2 has reignited a debate about charging infrastructire. So many of us Just Get A Tesla because we know Tesla charging is good. But for other brands it still causes lots of complaints. I had an EV back in 2014, where the real world range was 70 miles and chargers were in very small numbers. In this video I look back a decade into my SpeakEV forum comments, desc...
I rent a Polestar 2 for 24 hours - the car I *nearly* got instead of a Tesla.
Просмотров 18 тыс.Месяц назад
Back in 2022 I decided it was time to buy an EV. I really liked my previous Volvo S90, so the Polestar 2 was top of my list. But when I looked into the choices in detail and couldn't decide, my brain kept shouting at me - "Just Get A Tesla". And a RUclips channel was born! I rent a Polestar 2 for 24 hours and take it on a business trip. I do a full review inside and outside, see how efficient i...

I've reviewed quite a few products recently, and this is one I've had my eye on for a while. Tesla's shop includes all kinds of things - car accessories, clothes and assorted branded tat. Top tat on the tat tree? This Mega Backpack. This is a FULL UNBOXING VIDEO because the box and packaging is mindblowing. The pack itself? Beautiful - the same vegan leather as the car seats (and a new car smel...

Two year into my Tesla Model Y journey, I decided to take the Brave Pill. 0-60 mph in 4.8 seconds just isn't quick enough for a family car. Apparently. Happily Tesla have a solution! With the Long Range versions of the Model 3 and Model Y you can pay for the "Acceleration Boost". This unlocks the full power - all 507hp - of my car's motors. It is what I pay such high insurance costs for. In thi...

I've had my Tesla for 2 years, and I have done so much with this car. All day drives the length of the UK. Taken it to fairytale castles and over mountain passes. I get a lot of feedback from Tesla owners - they want to use Waze. CarPlay. Android. Their own preferred nav software instead of the Tesla system. Our smartphones are wonderful machines, but to use it in your Tesla you need a place to mount it. I've been looking at phone mounts for a while, and this Jowua foldaway mount is easily the most premium and most flexible solution I have seen. Welcome ...
Can you live with an EV with a big battery when you can only trickle charge? Lets find out

A video so many of you asked me to do! Instead of using my wall charger and topping up at 32A, we're on the domestic plug charger and taking only 10A. I love my Tesla Model Y! Its brilliantly designed and built. But on a recent trip where I rode in the back I realised there is one big omission! Can you drive a Tesla to the top of Scotland? And not get stranded? Lets find out...
i never knew it did this. but it makes sense.
I'd love to see the same test but with a performance model.
Your power usage showed loss of a bit under 10% of battery usage went to climate control and other systems. Another 10% (not shown) is lost in AC charging of the battery. Therefore the Wh/mi shown on the Tesla screen shows only the amount of energy from battery to the wheels. It ignores the ~20% total loss that never goes to propel the car forward. So if the Tesla screen suggests that you get 250 Wh/mi you might think that you’re getting 4 mi/kWh, but you’re actually getting 20% less (3.2 mi/kwh). So when the Tesla app says you spent $10 on a home charge, it’s ignoring the 20% losses, which means you’ve actually spent $12.5 (or pounds if you prefer). Edited
Incorrect - when it heats the battery it shows this energy consumption
@ Right, but your app showed a negligible 1% of battery energy going to battery heating. 9% losses to climate control and other. And~10% losses in AC battery charging (not shown). Thanks.
@ Your app showed only 1% to battery heating, while 9% went to climate control and other.
I think most people buy all wheel drive for snowy conditions. By the way, I have a Model 3 RWD in New England. My car did good on snowy roads with all season tires. I recently retired and therefore have the luxury of avoiding driving on very snowy days.
I have enhanced Autopilot here in Australia and ACA has been a really welcome Improvement overall and it’s a welcome update
Simple. rwd very practical, less parts less weight . Most people should get that. Duel motor/ performance, do you like accelerating very fast? Definitely get the duel/performance! The rear wheel drive is painfully slow compared to the performance like they’re two completely different vehicles. Performance or even dual motor with acceleration boost is nearly 2 x 0 to 60. Of all the people I know who got the rear wheel drive when they step in a dual motor or performance you can tell they have a little bit of regret when they feel how much more power it has Totally impractical, totally illogical, but it is what it is
Any vehicle that loses half its value in 2 years is not worth purchasing, EV or ICE
@justgetatesla I use the Scan My Tesla app on my 2017 Model X 100D and found that over 60 mph (100 kph) the front motor turns on and the rear turns off unless you press it for more acceleration the rear comes on momentarily. Test yours again above 100 kph to see if the Model Y does the same.
Tesla has just released a power upgrade for the 2024 Model 3 LR dual motor to go 0 to 100 Km/h in 3.8 seconds. And I'm sure it is utilizing the front motor more to achieve this increase in performance.
In the US, outside of the speed difference, there's also a difference in audio system. Worth the upgrade if you're an audiophile.
Yes, I hear that the “custom” audio system isn’t great. Why didn’t the US get the upgrade to the premium system like everyone else?
@justgetatesla we do. The AWD and Performance has the premium audio with the 14 speakers, 2 amps and a subwoofer. The RWD has the base level audio.
I know this is a year old video but there is something funny about driving a Tesla vs my 10 year old Dodge. Yes the Dodge has cruise control as do 90% of the vehicles on the road but I never used it. Traffic varies so much that the basic cruise control is rendered useless unless you are driving after 10pm and before 5am. With my Tesla I hit the FSD stick and the next thing I know I am at work 50 miles later. From 70mph to standstill creep along traffic the Tesla just does it. I am planning a 230 miles trip soon and I am curious if my Y perf can make it with no stops as 100% batter nets me 267 miles. And the trip is 75mph for a good bit of the way. If I have to stop then there are tons of places along the way with more being but in monthly, just about. Anyways another great video. They are all in sync with the whole gas vs battery. thanks
Only thing interesting for me is charging speed at SuC and price. LFP from BYD is the choice I went for RWD.
Remember that the rear motor is a high efficiency permanent magnet motor while the front is an induction motor which has lower parasitic losses while not being used. Also if you get the performance model you can change the distribution from front to back etc...
So the all wheel drive is better because the front motor will kick in during traction issues. They showed it in the "Does Tesla Build a Good AWD System? We Put The Model Y On The TFL Slip Test To Find Out!" video. The front wheel test did fail but that is the most difficult test and a lot of vehicles fail. Anyways great video for the sights alone but the test you were showing was very eye opening. Keep it up!
Did you notice any drop in range with these tires?
No more than 10%
Heck, this kind of comparison isn't easy and can be swung from one side to another without too much trouble. I've put down an alternative point of view for this. Not trying to be clever, just analysing your calculations. There aren't many cars that do only 40mpg any more. Most do 50-60mpg these days. You'd fill up before going in most cars and this would get you most, if not all of the way there. Petrol is £1.32 per litre at my local station so the total journey cost would be closer to that of an EV. I notice you charged at Tesla wherever possible. If you don't use a Tesla charger (perhaps not a Tesla?) then this is normally 80p per kwh at motorway services. The cost for the EV would be higher. I appreciate EVs are amazingly cheap to run locally, but on long journeys, they are not. They barely break even or cost more.
Ok, so you want to discount my real world costs using real cars and real mpg and real charging costs and real energy use because it gives the wrong result. You *know* EVs are loads more expensive when you deploy the FUD maths.
To maintain speed in any vehicle requires only a fraction of the horsepower of which most vehicles are capable. To set the car up using more power than needed at any given moment would be inefficient and consume more battery reserves hence, reduce efficiency and consequently range. Efficiency is king in a BEV. The software Tesla designed is brilliant IMHO. True, AWD is not needed until it’s needed…….
I would love to see the same route in snow to see the difference. Great video.
Would also be interesting to see if there’s any difference on the same route in the rain.
Frot motor = Added cost, added weight, added rolling resistance !!
People will pay the extra money just for that one time they will needed.
Great video, I was hoping that you were going to go in a muddy field or a muddy Lane and Accelerate hard to see how the Motors worked. Maybe when you get some snow you could redo a shorter video. Thumbs up from me, model 3 driver long range
Would be interesting to see how it distributes the balance between the motors with snow and ice on the road...
Badly….
Excellent video! (subscriber from Dallas, TX)
Are the motors of the same power or is the rear more powerful and the front is supplementary. I think one motor is geared for torque and one for speed(or cruising) or something. i know they are designed to be good at two different things which would explain why the rear gets used most of the time. 7 speakers is probably more than enough more most people. The JBL system in my Prius(not the base option) is 9 speakers and more than enough, plus its from 2008 so I would expect a modern system to be much better.
Better performance & traction only. Great for towing.
V noisy wrt interior compared to the model Y- must prefer the simplicity of the Tesla
V noisy compared to the model Y- must prefer the simplicity of the Tesla
I've heard a lot of bad things about the Lidl and Aldi chargers. Enough for me to never have bothered trying one.
Why is Tesla Autopilot STILL not better? I prefer VW ID.3 Travel Assist v Model 3 Performance 2024 ruclips.net/video/N9AA5LuAAJY/видео.html
It’s an interesting video! It struck me that they are fundamentally trying to do two different things. The Tesla system wants to do everything. The VAG system is - like the Volvo/Polestar one - an assistant. In most of the world that means little, as L2 autonomy is all we get. The other systems which allow you to adjust steering etc without disengaging are better because of the restrictions placed on autonomy by the UN regulations. We can’t say “x system is better than Tesla autopilot” because outside of North America we get the crappy version. The proper version wipes the floor with everything else. We just can’t have it here. Yet…
At 22 minutes in, I think that what you observed could be a Tesla interpretation of "torque vectoring"
At 20 minutes in, it seems that it is propulsion biased as the front motor kicked in when reversing downhill.
How does it behave in snow or icy conditions?
Decently! Hopefully the CrossClimate tyres this winter will be brilliant- there will be videos!
Would've be interesting to see how AWD does when on snow/offroad-assist It might be a bit more useful then - I certainly have enjoyed it during winter here in Norway
RWD for me Ian 😊 I ordered the model 3 LR RWD the model Y was much more expensive and to be frank I don't need an AWD car so model 3 for me it is and I'm happy 😁
My S voice control is lousy: dangerous actually because when it does the wrong thing it turns into a scramble to find a way to do the action, whether by more voice control or going through submenus.. The ridiculous thing is that the screen will text accurately what I say - then the confirmation text and the action is completely different!
I don’t use voice controls on anything really
maybe its different in UK. But in USA our Dual Motor Y is All Wheel all the time
Is it? We all get the same architecture wherever the car is built…
hello, you can force the front motor into running mode when you activate the "off-road" mode in the dynamic menu. the power distribution is more or less 70-30% between rear and front. very practical on snowy roads or muddy paths. the dual motor is only used for acceleration or if you want more traction in difficult conditions (manual activation). the preconditioning is also faster because since the front motor is an induction motor it heats up more, it is started during preconditioning. Now it is true that for everyday use, with mild weather conditions (clear road in winter), the dual engine is a luxury...
Yeah easily worth it for the acceleration and being able to accelerate normally on wet roads.
If you are on a budget and "must" have a Tesla, it makes sense to go for the RWD if you think you don't need the AWD. But based on what I know, I would not recommend it. The AWD is not just traction, is a safety feature, besides giving you additional power to move quickly out of a potential hazard zone, you also get much better stability and control, including the additional help from the Autopilot/FSD system even when you are not using it since the system will activate to help you avoid accidents if needed. If you are planning to get a new Tesla, aim for the AWD. If extreme acceleraiton is not for you, forget about the Performance and Plaid models and aim for the long range AWD. I think is the very best option for your money.
Should get the s3xy knob and disable the rear motor and see the efficiency
Just watched Richard (RSEV) comparing his M3 autopilot with a VW ID3 driver assist. I am gobsmacked at how good the VW is in comparison with his M3 and my MS (and your MY). As I said in his comments, are VW just ignoring the EU/UK rule about how much the steering can be turned.
Haven’t seen it yet - will do so. It’s *possible* they’re ignoring the rules. But if so they will get fined a lot 🙄
