@@barrymurton8988it does switch off automatically when the battery drops to 20% to ensure you don’t return to a dead car. But, you can switch sentry on and off via the Tesla app on your phone at any time you wish. So, you can chose to switch it off before your battery drops to 20%, but the car will do this anyway if you fail to do so.
Usually sentry mode will be disabled at favorite locations, work and home, just setup the airport as your favorite and you don't have to remember to turn off sentry mode while being stressed about all the other important things
I travel a fair bit and always leave my sentry on. Last time I was parked at Heathrow a car hit me all down the side of my Tesla. From. Now on I will always leave it on. Enjoy all your videos.
I've had the same issue, Ian, where I had to rush back to the car even after increasing the charge to 95%. You get 5 minutes grace before getting charged idle fees. (Tesla says it starts accumulating the fee right away and it is waived if you move within 5 minutes.)
I regularly road trip my 2023 Model Y LR (built in Austin, TX). The longest was my drip from Dallas, TX to Jackson and Yellowstone, Wyoming - about 3,400 miles round trip. I've also driven from Dallas to Telluride/Colorado Springs Pikes Peak (14,000 feet elev) Colorado (3,200 miiles) with zero problems and zero range anxiety. My car is very accurate at estimating how far I can go and how much I need to charge so I just drive until it tells me when and where to recharge. The Tesla Model Y LR is the best road trip car I've owned in the 47 years I've been driving.
I left my Model 3 RWD in Manchester airport parking for a week in July with Sentry off and it consumed about 4% from what I remember. I use Sentry in my work car park, and it uses about 4% over an 8 to 9 hr period.
@@justgetateslaI’m fine with the Sentry battery use while at work. My 2024 model 3 got scratched within three weeks of getting it at work, and Sentry was off, so the culprit escaped. 4% of battery costs me about 16p, well worth it if I catch the next negligent workmate who damages my car. Based on 4 days per week at the office and say 47 working weeks per year, that’s about £30 per year in electricity to run Sentry for 1,500 hours! All the above is based on my 57.5kWh LFP battery costing me about £4 to fully charge on Intelligent Octopus Go at 7p/kWh.
Perfect timing for this video. Just left our car in Porto for a few weeks in Morocco and also turned sentry mode off. Will be interesting to see our loss when we get back.
I agree since getting my Tesla and having to use the Super Chargers I have exactly the same feeling. It tells you when you can be ready to continue your trip and on all occasionss it has been done in under 15 minutes. Often I have only managed to order and get my coffee! Disabling sentry mode whilst leaving the car parked is a minimal loss of power. I discovered that a Home assistant add in was polling the car every hour or so and that was a drain of battery! Now switched that off and it has stopped waking the car to get it's stats.
I had to giggle at your "range anxiety"... Just did another trip from London to southern Spain with my two doggies. I had the same problem with my new Model 3 RWD. It charges much faster than the dogs and I can pee and have a quick coffee at Superchargers.
Great video as usual Ian! It's not a problem to charge the particular battery you have to 100% on occasion. It's just recommended not to leave it charged up at 100% and not used for some time afterwards.
My favourite bit of the video was catching a glimpse of the long suffering missus struggling along with the suitcase whilst Ian happily gamboled along with his camera 🤣
The short of it is that Sentry mode will burn about 4% a day in my experience but it will turn off when the battery gets down to 20% so as long as you have a SC in the area, there is no problem.
I wish my mg4 was as reliable as a Tesla ,10 days on holiday came back flat 12v battery luckily I was prepared with a booster charger in the glove box I'll get a Tesla next time, good videos,👍
I’ve left my model 3 LR several times at Manchester airport with the sentry off and like you it only looses a couple of percent. But also whilst on a recent road trip to Belgium I left it parked for a few days on a street so left sentry enabled but simply factored in the extra energy it would use on the previous charge. Also noted that supercharging in France and Belgium was cheaper than over here🤔 I worked out the 1100 mile road trip cost about £90 in supercharging in total 👍
You can press the red button at the top of the screen. This should disable sentry mode until your next drive. Just useful if you forget to turn it back on again.
I had this the other day. We have a new grand child and she takes forever to get going and all the gubbons that goes with babies. Went to supercharger near Maccy D but it finished before we were so legged it back and drove to Maccy D but car park was rammed so had to squeeze into a small spot. Argh. The anxiety was overloaded.
I always leave sentry on when parking at the airport and also switch it on when leaving it at home whilst i am away, i’d say it uses about 1.5 / 2% a day max. Basically it ain’t going flat.
Re range anxiety when charging.. the following from Tesla is worth noting…. fee. If the vehicle is moved within five minutes, the fee is waived. Idle fees only apply when a Supercharger station is at 50% capacity or more. Idle fees double when the station is at 100% capacity.
Consider turning off Climate | Cabin Overheat Protection too. I had mine on all summer this year and your video reminded me to turn it off for Fall/Winter. Depending on your situation, you may not need it on for long-term parking. Something I’ve noticed about using Sentry mode (I parallel park my 2019 M3 on a busy street right now - our garage can only fit my wife's MY atm so I home-charge every 2-3 days), depending what the cameras can “see” such as passing headlights, raindrops, raindrops lensing streetlights with weird patterns, these can all trigger Sentry events keeping the system busy recording things it doesn’t need to. I’m averaging 5% loss per day with Sentry on while parked on the street. A car park would likely have far less Sentry “events” therefore less loss per day.
Next time you're worried about your car finishing charging before you get back to it, just reduce the amps that the car is using to charge. It will slow it down, and allow you to get back at your leisure.
Sentry off, historically I'll lose about 1% SOC every three days. (Bit more first day as battery cools) I usually leave the car plugged in when leaving for multiple weeks because the other big potential cause of phantom drain is topping up the LV battery. (An issue for older cars with the lead acid 12V) Had exactly that McDonald's issue at Perth. First time Tesla give you a warning just. (Got a warning at Gretna after the charger broke down mid charge, which is how I know)
What did it use the 2% for? When I leave my MG4 parked at the airport it's at the same SoC when I get back as when I parked it. And we're talking two weeks and more here.
It probably cooled down. Does the MG4's SoC change with temperature in the first place? Does it communicate differently about charging when it's cold? The Tesla does. I usually ignore what machines tell me so that's what I did and came back to a blue snowflake that said "0%" next to it. But it's a Tesla, so I should be fine. And fine I was. Not emotionally, but technically.
I've made a couple of trips to "off the beaten path" (central western Illinois) and there is a definite lack of tesla chargers. It does cause too much thought about charging and how much energy will be required to get to a charger. I stress a little about having to cut my trip short because my car's power level is getting close to what is required to get to the charger.
The idea of having to validate your car with a Justpark app at Birch Services….. so easy to see the sign at a Motorway service station, and yet not notice it! I do wander how many people are landed with a dreaded parking charge notice when supercharging here.
Just opening the app shouldn’t wake the car in most situations anymore. Tesla fixed that recently. If you tell the car to do things, such as preconditioning the car, that will obviously wake it. I’ve found that even routing somewhere tends to wake it as well for some reason, even without sending the route to the car.
One good thing to note is that the car should automatically shut sentry off when you hit 20%. Also regarding the superchargers, I believe there's a 5 minute grace period after you stop charging.
From Tesla: For every additional minute a vehicle remains connected to the Supercharger, it will incur an idle fee. If the vehicle is moved within five minutes, the fee is waived. Idle fees only apply when a Supercharger station is at 50% capacity or more. Idle fees double when the station is at 100% capacity.
Sentry Mode requires your Battery to be at least 20% charged. If the Battery falls below 20%, Sentry Mode turns off and the mobile app sends you a notification. Power consumption may increase when Sentry Mode is active.
I wonder how much battery is consumed with Sentry mode ON but camera based detection switched OFF? That way it will only alert you if the car is hit or someone tries to break in or vandalise it.
It’s worth pointing out that you can’t use the app to view any sentry mode activations if you have it switched off therefore you could be saving up to £120pa by not having the Tesla WiFi subscription. Ok, if you don’t have it you won’t have the arial map view and heavy traffic highlights, which never seem to change whatever the time of day which is why one has Waze etc. on the phone and besides the Tesla maps are not great with multi stops but that’s another RUclips video…. Finally, sentry de activates when the battery is at or below 20% so if it’s running flat there may be another issue or perhaps checking the car status frequently and waking it up is draining it?
If the weather had been very hot or cold, would the battery cooling/ heating system use power trying to maintain the optimal conditions? Not Tesla owner yet, but I do know some people with them, and seen reports on this, so am very curious as here in Oz a car in summer sun will get very warm.
I will never turn Sentry off when I’m out and about again. I was worried about the battery % so turned sentry off. Had the car for less than 3 months, went to Chipping Norton, left the car in a car park, went for a walk for about an hour, came back and some sod had reversed into the car and damaged the rear wheel arch costing me £900 to repair. Worse is I know who did it because I let them into the car park before me…
The problem with using miles as a reference is that the miles quoted is the car computers estimate of range based on multiple factors including weather and ambient temperature. If you leave the car for a week and the temperature is 5 degrees colder when you pickup the range estimate will be lower than when it was left; even if there’s been absolutely no drain whatsoever.
If it blows off steam when charging in the cold, where is that water (the steam) coming from? Is it just condensate, or will you need to replace that water at dome point?
Everyone should be wary about parking in public spaces like airports, etc where the liability is on the owner to ensure that within reason they park properly. Many public spaces do state no liability is accepted by the facility owner or provider.
Absolutely! I place no liability on the airport should anything happen! My point is that they have a lot of cameras on site - so it seems pointless having my own cameras switched on
Interesting, I presume Tesla's can now charge the 12v battery while sitting? I have seen other electric cars need a jump start to come back to life after a week or so of sitting.
A week its too long. It will drain much of the battery. Ig thebplace u parked its somewhat secure and safe do not use sentry. If you park in a ghetto area then yes.
