Is it a Viaduct or a Culvert?
Просмотров 3455 месяцев назад
I have always known this as a 3 arch viaduct in Whetstone on the GCR. However , recently someone said its technically a Culvert! Which one is it? Help me to decide.

1857 that cannot be right - GCR ?
1897 !
Well spotted! I meant 1897! It would have been a bit early 😂
Imagine a people capable of constructing that engineering marvel , a mere year after Stephenson's Rocket had been exhibited , but they forgot to measure the height of the chimney before setting off ? Something doesn't seem right with the narrative to me.
Thank you for watching and yes it does seem like a massive oversight! The trains later on had the cabs cut down to fit the tunnel as well. My microphone was broken as I set off so had to rely on the camera only, so apologies if that was the issue! More coming from that and other lines very soon, when I am well again!!
@@MiddyExplores My problem is not that such a mistake can be made , but the whole official story seems to be completely unbelievable. The funnel being too tall for the tunnel is just a gaping indication that the people credited with such a marvel were highly unlikely to be those responsible for the engineering masterpiece . How could the longest tunnel in the world , be planned , designed , excavated , and built within a few months of the Rocket being exhibited ? It would be like building the M1 within months of the first motor car , or Heathrow being planned after the Wright brothers first flight .
I do see your point it seems very unlikely as does a lot of the old railways I look at, the time lines always seem a little odd. The great central railway was allegedly built at a terrific rate according to the official times! Although things were built quicker in the past and a lot less safely. I often imagine that there is some flexibility in the dates@@IZingari
The brick tower by the underbridge to do with water. It's marked on the c1900 OS map as a 'Force Pump', which aided drainage of water from the tunnel. I first saw it in 1970, and water was pulsing through it even then!
Thanks for watching and for the information. It is certainly so e structure and definitely built to last! More videos on the gcr coming soon. 👍
So sad 💔
Thanks for watching.
Needs Trains again. Very Interesting on GCR.
Thank you for watching. I couldn't agree more! Sadly I think those days are gone forever.
Badley needs trains. Thanks for posting. Love the GCR.
Thanks for watching more videos on the gcr coming soon.
If this line was still open today, I bet it would be financially sound. Marples and Beeching were criminals, and due to death escaped their responsibility for this act of mass vandalism.
Thanks for watching and I totally agree it was a crooked decision based on bad economics and dodgy deals. No thought for the future. History has judged them.
i live in shawell. there is a footpath near shawell manner that leads into fields towards the quarry . you will see the railway line again and can follow it to see a few more bridges . some in bad condition. if you follow the stream towards newton there will be a cool underground tunnel . and if you jump the fence and climb the hill that the tunnel follows into your see some interesting areas. it is quote steep trough :)
Thank you for the heads up I will go and have a look when I get chance
Walked under that culvert a few times
Walked under that culvert a few times
I regularly cut the ivy back on the first bridge. I live close by and it's my favourite spot
Thanks for watching and thank you for looking after the old and sometimes forgotten infrastructure. Lovely walk through the area. I remember it looking so different when the pits were open!
I wonder if HS2 infrastructure will still be around in 100 years, you know after its been abandoned? Should never have been removed from service.
if it ever opens I doubt the infrastructure will last anywhere near the GCR!
Totally agree it should be preserved as a historical gem, such a shame as the other end of the line at Glenfield have been preserved.
Thanks for watching. Its a very important historical site just forgotten and left to decay, a great shame.
We moved to carlson Gardens in 1972 most of the platforms was still in place. As a kid spent lots of time playing on the railway line was no trees just stone and building remember it stopped at the factory big concrete wall. The bridge was taken down towards the motorway in the mid 80s and the housing estates was built in 1983. Great memory
Thanks for watching. I love to hear the stories of what happened after it closed. Hard to imagine now that a railway even went there. Thanks again.
Had a look from bridge 518 today, station platform has been cleared and all around it 😮
Hi thanks for watching. Yes the area around the old station has been bought and cleared by the new owner. I believe the old infrastructure is safe but who knows what will happen. Sadly the line closed so long ago now and with no chance of reopening it's slowly disappearing forever.
Hope the rigged FFP doesn't destroy your season next year
Here's hoping but I think it will have a massive effect on us
This is a view of a castle
Old train tunnel
Have only just found this, so again late to the party. I really enjoy looking at old railway infrastructure and have now got this on my bucket list. I really like to walk these places I can normally do around 8 or so miles finding that suits my mid seventy year old feet. For this one though, I might be accompanied by my wife so would like to park within a couple of miles of it, is this possible ? Thanks for posting this.
Thank you for watching. There is parking at either end of the viaduct so very easy to explore. Most of the land is easily accessible. Enjoy!
Who would swim in the molt? 😊
Not me 😂
интригует..но выглядит уютно
A lovely tunnel
I bet there is hidden treasures in the moat 🗡️
Hard to tell as the castle was never finished or lived in. By the state of the water though someone else can look 😂
@@MiddyExplores Magnet fishing 👍
Das ist ein Wasserschloss! Über einen Keller bin ich überfragt, vermutlich ist aber alles gut isoliert oder es gibt keinen. Mir gefällt das Schloss gut. Wo ist das?
The Castle is in Beaumaris, Anglesey, Wales.
How did they stop the ingress of water ? Surely the dungeons would flood
When I visited I didn't see any dungeons or cellars. Tbf the castle was never finished so who knows!!
Nicely filmed, and here are a few bits to add to it. The sidings on the left at 1:30 were originally for animal and produce transport as a dedicated spur ran into (what was) Leicester cattle market, departing from the route of the Midland mainline around the site of the current Sandicliffe Ford on Welford Road and operated until around the time of the closure of the station. The dedicated quarry sidings were more extensive in the days of ECCQ (English China Clay Quarries), and were realigned when the new quarry access was put in. You can get across to the other side (and much closer to the sidings by walking across the Winston Avenue playing fields to a set of steps at WTW location consoles.reckon.maximum and following the permissive path across the bridge that you're standing under at 2:15 @davepartner1954 gave the details of the steps to the signalbox, and one of the regular sightings locally was another signalman (Derek?) walking between Narborough and Croft in hi-vis, pushing his bike, for reasons that were never clear.
Thanks for watching and for the wealth of information. I am planning to do an update of this video so this information will be used. Thanks again 👍
my favourite beach on Anglesey ❤❤
First time we have visited and must agree it's a belter!!
Great video, thanks. The wide area was Rugby Wharf, which had a signal box, and sidings to the Oxford Canal and Newbold Quarry
See the bottom right hand corner of www.warwickshirerailways.com/lms/lnwrrm2621b.htm
Thank you and thanks for watching. That's what I was thinking when I was there but couldn't find any info! I am back there soon for a update so will mention this. Thanks again 👍
If only there was a way to charge beechings estate for the costs of reinstating all the railways he destroyed. Would be quite fitting if the govt sent his kids the bill for HS2. In the meantime so sad to see all those magnificent bridges left to rot away.
Thanks for watching and I totally agree and also the estates of the people that backed him, and the ones that made a small fortune from destroying the actual tracks etc. The list is endless!!
@@MiddyExplores I recently heard about why brackley viaduct was destroyed and it made me mad at all the evil corrupt people that destroyed the railways for money. Look at all the money that is being poured into HS2 which could have been used to feed the poor when once we had a perfectly good line the GCR that these evil twats destroyed
My best friend at primary school, used to live in 'Leire'. They lived at home farm on Stemborough lane rearing pigs.
Thanks for watching. A lovely area and I don't think I have ever met a pig farmer?
Would be absolutely hilarious if you later discover the reason for the demise of the GCR was that the line went to single track to go under that bridge you found at 5:45. There are other lines still in use that go to single track in the most stupidest of places, the north Cotswolds line being one of them where the silliest bit of single track goes through a brand new station and the worcester to hereford bit is a joke. There is also the infamous Welwyn bottleneck where a station is placed (believe it's Welwyn north) in just the wrong place to cause maximum chaos. Such a waste seeing those magnificent bridges left to rot and decay.
Thanks for watching and I agree it's such a shame to see these once glorious structures being left to decay and be forgotten.
I remember steam trains running along that line. I had many childhood adventures around there.
Thanks for watching. It's sometimes hard to imagine that trains once ran along here. I imagine there is some lovely memories.
1960: ruclips.net/video/nNGwXUFGMdM/видео.html
There are pictures I found on the Viaduct being built and when it was in its prime, I also found one of the bridge with a Black 5 steam engine going over it
Thanks for watching. Yes there is some lovely pictures online of the old line in its glory, a real loss, particularly around Brackley.
Very interesting and you make us want to see more.
Thank you for watching and your kind comments. The channel has been a little quiet lately but there is new adventures being lined up!
It's been ages since I've watched your videos. But I'm back loving your walks as always cheers 🚂
Thank you and welcome. E back. Been a bit quiet lately but some new material being added very soon
@@MiddyExplores Spring is in the air, but it has been terrible with rain affecting a lot of places. And safety always comes first. I haven't been down the GCR in months in Rugby as that can get flooded during heavy rain. But I will venture down there again after Easter as Rainsbrook is my favourite spot 🌄
Great video, I’ve walked this route many times and found this very interesting ☝️
Thank you and thanks for watching. I am hoping to return to Rugby in the near future to film more of the area
Greed.
One of the fastest sections of the line on this stretch through Whetstone - speeds well into 80 - 90 mph, as it was through Loughborough Central Station. Hard to picture now.
It is hard to imagine there was even a line in some sections. Such a shame that this line closed
@@MiddyExplores Very much so, yes. But once the BR Midland Region got hold of it, ran the services down and it was 'topped and tailed' to exist only between Rugby and Arkwright St. then it's fate was sealed. In microcosm, a similar 'topped and tailed' effect no doubt limits the current day GCR restricted to Birstall - Ruddington, trains to nowhere would perhaps be a little harsh. On the formation through Leicester, this was not protected and actively disposed of almost in assurance against any notions of reinstatement. What we could do with that extra north-south and cross-country rail capacity now...
@@nickbergquist6222 it does look and feel like it was run down on purpose, the advent of the m1 and the government's relentless drive to car ownership are partially to blame as well
The bridge infill is basically vandalism of our railway heritage, worse than the graffiti. I see ,just recently, the platforms and buildings have been cleared of foliage
I totally agree. However on a positive note I have heard the new owner is hoping to keep the platforms which is good news.
Visited this about 15 years ago. Came across the odd foot tunnel, as one side is to housing and the other to open fields, The whole site has an eerie feeling on a quiet edge of town. Missed the bridge though , I will take another look as it brought back memories, thanks
Thank you for watching. It's a very eerie site as at one time it was a really busy little station. I still hear locals talk about it fondly, a real shame.
Always love these adventure videos you can discover so much old history still about seemingly forgotten by most it's incredible 😄👏🎉
Thank you and thanks as always for watching. I was amazed by this one as I lived in Ashby for 23 years and knew nothing about it! Yes it is forgotten by many and sadly is slowly disintegrating. Thank again, more from this series coming soon 👍
Are there any pictures of where the line went into the other portal? (I know it has been infilled)
I am not sure but I am doing a follow up video this year so will be exploring that. Apparently it's in someone's back garden!!
@7:00 That’s known locally as the ‘Clevis’ . It’s an old Roman quarry .
Thank you I have been wondering about it for a while now! I will be making an update video soon
Have you visited Ashby Tunnel?
Yes I have there is a video on my channel. I went there about 2 years ago.
By the looks of bridge 37 the Farmer must take his life in his hands every time he crosses it!!! A nice peaceful walk in the Leicestershire countryside, great that you've documented it.
I think sadly that the surviving infrastructure is decaying so quickly that many features will soon be lost forever. A lovely walk though that continues in the next video 👍
@@MiddyExplores Look forward to it.
11:09 Hopefully it won't fail with the farmer driving over it. 😮
That's what I was thinking! Hopefully they are doing regular inspections
6:00 Looks very nice, immaculate.
Thanks for watching. It really is not many in better condition.
Thanks for the walking tour this day. Always enjoy the conversation on what you are seeing. Thanks you for the time and efforts in these videos. I really appreciate them. Cheers Pete! 🇬🇧🙂🇺🇸
Thank you for watching and the kind comments. I hope you appreciate that these comments mean the world to me as often it feels like I am talking to fresh air!!! Thank you again and more videos coming very soon.
@@MiddyExplores You’re very welcome, Pete. Repeating, I always enjoy them, and will always comment. Cheers Pete! 🇬🇧🙂👍🇺🇸
Alas Bridge 37, we at least had the pleasure of knowing you before you eventually fall apart. These bridges are really clinging on for dear life, and it’s good to see someone (ie: you) documenting them whilst they still stand. Hopefully you can sort out the gimbal problem!
Bridge over Jubilee Walk, goes to Frolesworth, not Broughton Astley. And it is pronounced Leer
Thank you and thanks for watching. I am hoping to film some more on this line very soon
@@MiddyExplores Enjoyed watching, Me and My Sister grew up in Leire, and used to play on the platforms. Still had the Ballast down, Ballast was recovered by Galliford Try.
@@MiddyExplores it's possible to walk under the Bridge on the Lutterworth Road. If You start from where the GCR crosses over the Midland Line, follow M1 toward Leicester, about 300/400 Yards there is a Farm access under the Motorway, rejoin Midland line on the other side. Worth the effort.....
@@nigelwinks3205 thanks fot that I will have a look next time I am that way
What ever it is I think we can agree it’s a nice place to be
