  • Join me as I explore Kelmarsh Tunnel (s) on the former Northampton to Market Harborough Line.
The up line is now part of the public footpath but the down line is left and derelict ....join me as I explore both and the fantastic engineering still on show some 40+ years after its closure

Another great video. The buttresses on the first tunnel entrance are something else.

Thank you and thanks for watching.I was quite astonished at how grand this was for a relatively small line! More coming from this line soon.

One snowy day a Leicester crew on a Stanier 8F were running tender first towards Northampton . As they exited the tunnel they came to a rather abrupt halt having run into a snowdrift. The fireman, who was an acquaintance of mine, had to climb over the tender and wade through the snow to the signal cabin to report the problem under rule 55. He was soaked and half frozen and was glad the signalman had a decent fire going to thaw out in front of!
I gather the single bore tunnels were quite tight and despite the air vent there was always a build up of exhaust from the locos passing through which made them quite a daunting prospect to go through. You noticed the build up of soot on the tunnel roof, which rather bears that out!

Thanks for watching and the great bit of history, it's always great to hear stories from the railways. Things were certainly different back then!

Thanks as always for watching. It is a lovely pair of tunnels one of which is very easily accessed the other not so. A lovely walk as well along the old track.

Market Harborough and Northampton used to be connected by a rail link that was opened in 1859, but shut in 1981.
Campaigners are calling for the 14-mile route to be restored and said it would benefit both commuters and tourists while taking cars off the road.
The English Regional Transport Association (ERTA) said it was a "worthy cause to pursue".
The group also said restoring the service would open up a new "north/south national rail corridor", linking the Midland Mainline with the West Coast Mainline, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
Councillor Peter James from Harborough District Council said he was fully behind the campaign.
"In terms of the local people of Market Harborough, who are very important in this, it does give a transport choice and alternative," he said,

Finally got round to watching this one, and it was worth the wait. The ornateness of these structures is brilliant, real craftmanship and attention to detail, so glad that you got to walk through both of them, because I went down there around five years ago and the second one was closed off. Now getting ready for the big Leicester City game this afternoon - come on the Foxes!!!!

Thanks as always for watching. Two brilliant tunnels and like you say fantastic brick and stone work. Shame the Leicester game didn't work out but we got what we have played for all season!!

The building on the road next to the bridge, at the start, used to be a pub called The Railway Tavern. Further up the line, towards Market Harborough, was a signalbox on the left, which controlled the junction to the MOD fuel dump. The train drivers used to call the tunnels "Ratholes" due to their narrow portals. Nice video

I think the refuges have been bricked up to stop people hiding in them and attacking walkers and cyclists, great video, I seem to remember seeing a video on these tunnels before this one was opened up

The non path tunnel may have had a air shaft ,the piles of bricks you encountered could be where it was capped and debris just allowed to drop down .
