  • Join me as I finally explore Oxenden Tunnel on the former Northampton to Market Harborough Line. Taking its final traffic in 1981 this former railway is a very accessible public footpath that affords two tunnels and some lovely architecture.
This is also Sam and Daisy's first railway tunnel!
    Enjoy!

Very enjoyable walk. They may have been called rat holes, but those were beautiful portals, and so solidly built. The ventilation shaft was a treat too. Looking forward to more!

I haven't been there for years, it was great to see. I think it was a single track at first, so they had to build side by side tunnels, as they double tracked it later on. The original tunnels weren't wide enough for double track.

Thanks for watching. Yes that's right very narrow tunnels and no way of getting two tracks through there.

Loved this Middy. I remember this line well, closing as it did 18 years after the Beeching report. I don't think you've explored Hose tunnel yet ( in the Vale of Belvoir, near Long Clawson, Leicestershire ),but can't find a video in your series anyway. I walked it way back in 1974, 1976 and 1994. It was on the GNR & LNWR Joint Line and the route closed to all traffic in 1964. Your video on John O'Gaunt viaduct explored the same line, but further south of the tunnel. Keep 'em coming!

Thank you for watching and your support. This was a lovely easy start to the year! The tunnel at long clawson has been blocked off by the farmer and is unaccessible unfortunately. It's the only Leicestershire tunnel I haven't done. I will be doing more on that line this year.

@@MiddyExplores That's a real shame. The tunnel was open at both ends for years too. Farmers, eh? ☹️

@@petersharp7644 I think he got fed up of people walking all over his land. It's fair really I suppose!
