  • Join me as I depart from my usual videos and film a old and forgotten Cottage that sits near the seaside in Aldeburgh.
The history of the cottage is sketchy but it was something to do with the sluice which is nearby. One thing is certain it hasn't been occupied for years.

Haven't seen an old wash boiler like that one in the cellar for many years. Took one out when we built our kitchen extension in 1976,but it had already lost it's copper pan before we moved here. My grandma had one that had a direct water feed from a tank in the roof that collected the rainwater from the guttering and fed down to a big brass tap that let the cold water straight into the copper pan which was heated by a coal fire under it. The very height of modern convenience in the 1880s! Now we have solar heated water on tap.
Shame to see houses going to waste when people are homeless. A sad reflection on modern life.

I have since found out that the roofless extension went out to a small wind mill! It did indeed control the sluicebut appears to have had other trades as well! Thank you for watching and I am glad it conjured up old memories!

Thanks for watching. I have watched this lovely old cottage decline over the years it is so sad. There will be a part 2 of this as I have just been told some of its history and it's fascinating.

That “kiln “ is for washing clothes. It would hold a copper with a fire underneath to heat the water

It looks like an old copper for boiling clothes in the cellar. We had one in our kitchen at my parent's house.

Yes it is, not a well as stated. My late parents grew up with these in the East End of London. My father told me that as a child he was asked by his parents to go to the hardware shop to buy a small twist of paper (like the salt bag that used to be in crisps) containing gunpowder. They needed it to occasionally clean the internal chimney. He said once the fire was going under the copper bowl, they would open the metal fire door, slam it quickly and hold it closed firmly pushing a broom against it whilst standing back. The loud bang used to blow all the soot from the chimney. No "Elf an safety" then !!!😯😯

Post office telephone junction box (just post war) and a water heater for doing washing and bathing for sure, as said below. My Gran had one , it had a Town Gas ring in the bottom, after the washing was done the water was pumped up to the bath upstairs for the whole family to share. This one would have been fired with wood and coal, a great find.
