The old can was a back pack for putting out wild fires. The spray wand is missing
We call them Indian cans in my department
Or was used to START a controlled burn.
Definitely an Indian Pump Can, I wore one enough when I was much younger
The two clips on the top of that can held that spray wand
We always called them piss pumps
My ancestors had a log cabin that straddled a stream coming out of a cave. Pitcher pump on sink drew up water and crawdads. The area was dammed up by beaver and called Lightening Bug hollow in the Great American Bottoms. When hoodlums burnt it down I cried. Then when property was sold, I cried again.
When I read this. I also cried
@@hyloward7907 When I cried, someone read this
It's sad and frustrating that some people feel the need to destroy things.

Wow
That old log cabin is amazing! Thank you and Todd for sharing!
36:52 - Noticed the wollyworm, many still here in WV. look at the wollyworm, to determine the winter weather. The black bands near the head, indicates into first two weeks of Dec. Looking at this one by what I see, the first two weeks of Jan. and first week of Feb. shows extreme cold weather. Each band counts as a week, from the tail end to the head is Feb. Jan. Dec. Each black band indicates extreme cold weather. The solid black worms are males and you don't look at them. Just had to throw this in there, Old folk lore! Too you can pick them up, they don't sting or bite you, very soft, so take extra care. God Bless, (Glen).
An old myth. It was pretty mild winter last year, along with this year so far
Thanks for the video, Shout out to Todd, Things take on a more thoughtful bent when it's your people involved.
Todd should definitely take that beautiful brass doorknob! That's exactly the same pattern I have in my house
Thanks to Todd for sharing his family’s history with us.
I have just found you guys, loving it, watching from Scotland....I now want to get a detector!!
Todd, to be able to search your family's homestead with Beau, whom I consider being part of your family, must have a been a treasure in its self. I would have felt just as you did. Wonderful video.
@@AppalachianHistoryDetectives 💕 everyone needs a friendship such as you two have. See any samsquanch footprints or hear some noise?
@@AppalachianHistoryDetectives lol BONUS!
Beau and Todd, This is a treasure. History is wonderful but when you get to investigate an ancestral home/area the hunt enters a whole new area. The memories of your family are still there for you to sit, enjoy, and absorb. Chig found the remains of an old pitchfork yiu need to retrieve. You also need to drive an artu
Sorry, I hit the wrong button. Todd you need to drive an atv up there and retrieve the grindstone and the fireplace poker, the old mason jars, and pitchfork. If you kids do not want now, they will later on as adults. Also, during this fall time get a regular camera and take pictures of the house from different views and keep prints of the same. This your heritage. You probably have nieces, nephews, cousins that want to same history. The long nails and even the pilsbury flour sack piece would look great in a memory box with a picture of the house. This one was special. Thx
The can was a papoose back pack sprayer fire service still use
Well done Chigg....I could spend a lot of time looking around a beautiful home like that. For Todd's relatives to have lived there would be an added bonus. Just reflecting of what life was like for his G & GG-Grandparents. This was America that should never be forgotten about. Thanks again for bringing us along!!!!
Given its age, those logs could very well be American chestnut.
They are....very good....
SAMSQUANCHES AND GHOST STORIES FROM TODD PLEASE!!!! Don’t leave me hanging!!!
Sasquatch is real. 🤷♂️

Thanks for watching…. The Chigg
Mixing glass in with the insulation, helps keep the mice and other critters from chewing through to the inside.
every so often his voice travels into bob ross tones and territory...and ya know what? i like it.
I've thought the same thing! Lol 😆 I love it!
Its not a gas can, i believe it is backpack water extinguisher for woods fires. Would have a hand pump sprayer that sita on top
That large squarish tin container with the clips and chain on is a back pack water sprayer used for fire suppression by forest fire fighter crews to this day. I think they are made by a company called Indian, and are still available. Very cool hunt. Thank you!!
Myself I think the dude growing weed in the sixties used the sprayer fertilizer or bug spray !
This video is a great Segway to Happy Hallowe’en! Spooky place! 👻
Even the chinking on the house is freaky! 😧
That bank was interesting with all those nails! All I could think of was....gloves. LOL! 😝
That grindstone WAS neat! Love the pitch fork!
Interesting threaded plug. Maybe from a hot water bottle? And fleur-de-lis....hmmmm.....🤔
BTW - all of the wooly bear caterpillars I have seen recently have a different band...looks like a long, cold winter.
I loved watching the sense of adventure and family nostalgia for Todd. 🥰.
Gofundme for preserving the cabin. I would donate to it.
Wow ! Todd great family history. The house i bet was gorgeous in its day. Thank you for sharing I enjoyed it alot. Stay safe out there.💝
Always watch every second of your show. You made the effort to post it so it is only fair to watch it all. That curved can thingy reminds me of very old backpack sprayers. Not exactly, but similar. Anyhoot, thanks mate!
That's what is is. Some call it a piss can. They had a hose with a pump on the end of it. 31:18
A special thank you to Todd and his family. And, as usual, Mr. Chigg I certainly would not dig with a gloved hand. (Reverse psychology) Perhaps your charming bride can give you a tetanus shot with a crooked horse needle. Kidding of course. I’m a little old man on the farm, sitting in my chair, petting cats, and I know nothing. Stay awesome fellas.
id imagine todds a bit somber seeing the state of disrepair. time stands still for no man.
flat spot above the cabin; thats where the still was.
that piece of brass bucket, todd can polish it up and engrave family names and dates on it.
I enjoy your show gteatly.i am disabled and can not get out much .Thankyou
Talking about deer hunting surprised me Chigg -- I saw you wade ice cold water to save a cicada from being eaten by a fish, so never took you for a hunter -- full of surprises you are
Is that cabin down Copperhead Road...those nails are probably from were the still burnt up.
Yes that can was an Indian Tank, I carried one of them in my younger days fighting fires for the Forestry Dept. It wasn't fun when the fire was on top of a mountain and I had to carry one of them cans on my back up and down the mountain to fill them up with water from a creek.
Old-timers used to put money and valuables in Mason jars, coffee cans and bury them in the yard. Have you ever found anything like that?
Yay another video 👍👍👍👍
News paper stories of hairy men in the forest go back into the 1840s. Prior to that at least 76 different tribes across the US had a name for the hairy man in the woods. Some of them literally had “wild man” in the definition.
Wow, what a cool area and cabin. Todd has alot of history there! Liked this one!☆
The can was used for fire fighting , carried like a back pack . The straps, hose and hand pump are missing.
Very nice stairs, actually curves around to the living room. So far back in the Holler, but it was their land so why not. Sad that a squatter was living there and growing weed. Could have done real damage to the old place. Sad story about the husband. Thank-you Todd and Chig for the adventure.
West Virginia is such a beautiful place
Pennsylvania/West Virginia both imo
I would put glass in the place for glass and do my best to keep animals out and preserve the cabin
I think the bank you were searching with all the nails, that may be where they dumped all the ashes from the fireplace. They probably burnt a lot of wood with nails in it to heat the house
We need smellavision! That beautiful soil with them fresh leaves.
That cabin was built well!
I think the cabin is well built
This stamp photo belongs on a calendar or in field & stream of sorts... America the great...
Thanks for letting us see your family's farm love the old cabins and history .
Beau that fuel can was forest fire fighter extinguisher can had rubber hose and brass pump actually trained with Shovel and that can pack straps on my back !!!
31:19 the "Neat Can" reminds me of the type that they wore on their backs and sprayed pesticides to kill mosquitoes with, that's why the 2 clip retainers on the top to hold the wand.
If you start hearing banjos, Beu, run! 🤣
Thanks Beau and a big thanks to Todd for showing us his families property. That cabin is a beauty! The fuel can looking thing was a backpack sprayer. I wore one just like it as a kid, yeah, DDT spraying cuz like asbestos it was Great stuff guys!👍. I think that whole valley is worth a weekend of detecting. So much family history happen there it would be a shame to miss anything.
I'm from clarksburg. Thanks for posting this
I find it interesting at how marginal the land was that people snatched up and lived on all their lives. It shows why pioneers kept looking for better land until they hit the Willamette Valley here in Oregon where anything will grow, but then still pressed on to the very edge of the Pacific.
My great-grandparents came to the Willamette Valley from Michigan and I am so glad they did! I have to agree with you, you really can grow just about anything in this valley.
That "Fuel" can is a backpack sprayer by the looks of it 🤔. 🇺🇸😎
Anyway or desire to try to slow the decay on the home? Would provide great videos as well. Patreon or gofundme?
To be able to say that your great great grandmother did certain things in a certain abandoned house is something I would treasure so so immensely. Just incredible!
Good one. have you ever been to Preston County
Gotta be hard for ol' Toddrick seeing that memory-filled place in disrepair. I've experienced that recently as well. Sobering, to say the least.
Hi TOD Hi CHIGG love ya
Hi Mary
Yup, great job guys.
Happy Halloween Everyone
Got another shirt👍👍👍
The can is from the back of an old oil stove or heater. "we had one"
If this cabin had been built in the 80's the 1980's and was abandoned , it would most likely have fallen by now. But they Just don't build'em like they used to. That is for sure. I myself would have probably got tears in my eyes with all the flooded memories.......
Back Pack sprayer, either fire fighting or spraying for bugs or weeds
Thanks for the Bigfoot story. It’s too bad that almost every time someone sees one, they shoot at it.
The people that skip out early don’t really know what it is to treasure hunt. You don’t just hit a Signal and wow There’s gold LOL
This was a fun exploration video. Love it when you know who the property belongs to. BTW, I might play your videos on 2x but I never skip through your videos because don't want to miss a "lookey here" moment. Thank you for sharing ♥♥♥
BEEN AWHILE ...
BUSY-BUSY , I HAV BEEN ...
HAPPY/THANKFUL THE CHIGG IZ STILL DEWIN WHUT HE DOEZ ...
PRAYIN ALL IZ WELL ...
- Godspeed
Awe Todd this is awesome I’m glad you guys went there. Very cool to visit your roots.
grinding stone was awesome ..cool yard art !!!!
The unmatched (unmatchable) parts on the cabin could be previous or later repairs; I suspect later because the pillsbury bag, but they could've stuffed that in later?
Very cool piece of property, none the less.
Four generations is roughly 120 years. So, your pal's folks lived there in 1900 or before. My dad's folks lived in a very nice log home on San Mountain AL in 1850, approximately. I am familiar with Appalachian cabins. I think the cabin in this video predates 1900.
That's a beautiful cabin, but second to the beauty of the neighborhood!
Grew up in a remote part of marion county, everyone has seen a glimpse of a hairy man ape type thing that I was reported to live in the woods.some people called it the loveridge monster
Incredible video! You guys are preserving history. The fact that the home belonged to Todd's family is especially meaningful. If only you could go back in time to when the place was bustling with activity! Thanks for sharing.
Was really diggin the video 'till u pulled out the Apex! Really? Of all the 'tectors on the planet at your fingertips, you picked the tampex... Uh, Apex???? Wtf??
Beautiful cabin. Beautiful area!
Cool hunt chigg. I am pretty sure that canister with the clips on the top is an old indian can. We still use them in the wildland fire service today, just modern versions of it. There would be a sprayer wand on top of the canister, that you would pump. Then water goes to the nozzle and it would have backpack like straps on it.
Beautiful area! Fabulous staircase in the cabin. Would be neat to see how the cabin looked back in the day! If I were Todd’s wife, I would welcome the relics into my home since they came from his family homestead. Love your videos Chigg!!!
For the last 29 hours, I have been dealing with an SOB who stole money from me. Hearing about the marijuana grower/squatter, I get mad. Parasites like that are killing America.
That is a fire extinguisher water pump.you strapped it on your back and it had a hand pump. When not in use the pump would lock into those brackets on top.
It was called a INDIAN PUMP TANK
This is so cool to see! My family property in south Omaha, Nebraska was sold off years and years ago. I don't know of any other place more remote that I had family live besides a family farm near Searcy, AR in the early 1900s. I'm sure that land was sold off decades ago too. I would love to detect on old family land like this and find things that belonged to long dead relatives. That would be such a fun experience!
Love how you reference trailer park boys calling it samsquanch
THE SPRING AND PARTS LOOK LIKE AN OLD WAGON SEAT ETC???????????????? MAYBE A TRACTOR SEAT SUPPORT!?
I love how chigg gets to the second floor stating how Todd should post this video if he meets his doom. Comments on the three foot sway in the floor , then proceeds to temp fate by bouncing on it! Typical chigg. Awesome old cabin and history. I'm never disappointed, learn something, and enjoy every video so far. Keep on swinging. Ty for sharing your adventures. Stay safe, chigg.
It’s so beautiful in the woods in fall in the hills of Wv
If you had a flashlight other than that 200,000 Lumen monstrosity you use, you could always just keep it clipped to your bag
Todds cleaning up on the family estate, Chiggs finding the Gross Creatures!!
That's a portable backpack style fire fighting can that's missing its wand apparatus. My dad had one of those in the 1970's. We used it along with an old flame thrower to burn the grass along our pasture fence lines. He had used it in the woods when he was a logger. It was a really cool thing and I wish I had been able to keep it, but it went the way of many things when we moved when I was a kid. It probably went to the dump...sigh...
Here's a link to one on ebay: www.ebay.com/itm/Rare-Indian-Metal-Fire-Extinguisher-D-B-Smith-Co-Backpack-Vintage-Antique-/113815021175
Last weekend we made apple butter using large copper kettles and constant stirring. It took all day. That may be what the copper sheet was from (About 28 mins timestamp).
Hopefully he'll try to preserve that cabin and Chigg glasses for eyes when walking through forest gloves when digging and carry your flashlight
why the hell!!! do you let your ancestral house go so far into disrepair???? we have old cabins from 1848 we take care of our family property.
Hi Beau At 31.37 I think that's the tank for a backpack sprayer. Notice the D rings top and bottom for the straps.
Moundsville is my old stomping grounds 3bn./36 inf. The Rock
An old Black Draught bottle....lol And yep, I had a time last year with an old wood stove I found in pieces, and there must have been a strange thing about it's story, because I found the other remainders of this same stove half a mile away from the initial spot. But I can't dwell for too long on mysteries, one has to keep moving.
Dude what the heck😂 I I’ve just been watching random videos and that is my great grandparents cabin and my cousin Todd I didn’t know he did youtube
My sister has a little cabin on her land in Pennsylvania that was built 1776....I would love it if you could metal detecting on her land!
As a person who knows ghosts are real and who believes bigfoot may also be real...If i'm in places like this i always like to have a friend with me and a 9mm in my bag, although it wouldn't help with ghosts it's better safe than sorry..what a beautiful slice of heaven though.
Yay, another beaucephus video!!!
Hi Chigg. I believe the can you found is a part of a sprayer. The hand pump would be secured across the two clip mounts on the top.
The old galvanized tank (can) with no bottom appears to be a pump spray can similar to the one’s. we used in the. Forestry Fire Fighters to put out spot fires.
I think I would salvage the door knob, every member of the house would have used it for generations....
