    As a Darrener, the story I was told by my grandmother was that Agnes, who was a handloom weaver (as my grandmothers family were) did not die during the attack, but two years or so later. She actually gave evidence against the criminals at Liverpool Assizes. If you find her grave later please do a part 2. I have only just found you and have subscribed as this was very interesting to see exactly where her cottage was. I go up to the tower regularly but never knew which side of the moor she lived. Thank you both.

    For anyone not from northern England, Owd is a local colloquialism for old. Just like auld.
    Quick edit to say old, a hundred+ years ago, was about 60.

      I'm in my early 60's and don't feel old. Thankfully, I hope it's just a turn of phrase nowadays 😂.
      I'm amazed at the resilience of people in those days. Such a savage beating with broken bits of skull, and maybe concussion, would have been enough to kill a person from shock and yet both managed to walk over to a nearby farmhouse for help. They were a very brave couple.

      Average life expectancy of 40 is because most people died before the age of 5. If you went past that and didn't succumb to accident you had as much chance of living until 90 as today. Owd Aggie was probably about 80

      I can't imagine what they both went through. But it does go to show that even in today's society, we hear similar stories now. Nothing has changed, and if anything, probably got much worse! People seem to have become more angry, more violent and lack all empathy for other people. But it must have been horrendous for Agnes and John and having to live the remaining few years of their life trying to get over what had happened.

      Darwen moor is massive but intriguing at the same time. But it can be dangerous! When we filmed another story, that of Herbert Noga, as we were walking back to our car, there was a hole that was well hidden on top of the moors which I didn't notice until my left leg completely disappeared and I went tumbling. I never felt the bottom so don't know how deep it went, but if that had been both feet / legs, then god knows how serious it could have been. To this day I think about it and wonder how far down it actually went.

    Hi Chris & Vicky. Some time ago a young couple of paranormalists were up at the Tower late at night conducting tests and all that. I watched their actual video here on RUclips a while back.
    During their time inside the Tower itself they tried to elicit some kind of response from Owd Aggie herself because they had wrongly been given to believe that Aggie had been killed there at the Tower, which of course is not true. They tried this experiment using these small glass balls with lights on them; every now and then these glass balls would start to move on their own. Whether this was in fact Aggie showing her presence or something entirely different I don't know but I can't see it being Aggie.
    All I can say is Chris & Vicky I'm a Darrener (as we Darweners are called) born and bred and have been up to the Tower late at night many times and I've never felt any strange feelings or sensed something not right. It's just me, the Tower and the wind. Anyway thanks for the video of Owd Aggie, very interesting and sad. I'll be watching more of your videos. 👍

      I think the old cottage was used as an inn of sorts or something like that in the latter part of the 1800s early 1900s but sadly fell into disrepair for reasons we aren't sure about. As for the grave, we were absolutely drenched when we got back to the car and it had started to rain even heavier, so we plan on visiting the graveyard when its much drier. I want to hopefully find her grave as it would show beyond a doubt to any doubters that she did indeed die two years after the events of 1860 and wasn't murdered that evening.

      I have to admit, it is very desolate over that way. When we were walking there, and when we found the old ruins, it just looked completely out of the way where the old building once stood.

      We've got the notes ready to do Maggie Allen, along with some old photos of her house before it was demolished. It was a former police station, but looks a right ruin when she lived there. A friend of ours covered this story not too long ago, so that's why we have sat on it for now.

    Hi to you two, beats me why some would pass remarks about what you do. I think it takes guts to walk in that weather and slop through that mud n stuff. Talk casually whilst trying to not step in a puddle. And believe you me, to us ardent fans, it just makes it so worthwhile. Imagine talking about a ghost story and you are prancing through a green field full of daisies and fairies. Not going to work so well at all. Keep doing what you are doing and just be careful not to get stuck in the mud. 😄🚶‍♂🚶‍♀

      I think some people like to focus more on the negative elements of what others do rather than be constructive in their comments. These people, whilst they also like to point out the bad points are the same people who probably won't get off their backsides and do what we do, so it kind of makes most of the comments they leave pointless.
      We are planning on making a regular video on these people and the comments they leave as a bit of a 'roast' to them. After all, even negative comments go towards pushing our content out.

    The beating was obviously an emotional disturbance for Agnes, and the actual death a subject may have nothing to do with the later appearance of of their apparition. Indeed, some apparitions have been witnessed of the living. Consider the numerous reports of a parade of Roman soldiers that have been seen in York. This parade, I assume, was not a re-enactment of their passing.

    • @starlight1867
      @starlight1867 Месяц назад +2

      I was fascinated by this story in York and I believe the young apprentice that saw this legion of about 20 Roman soldiers and a horse saw them only from the knees up. Later it was discovered that the Roman garrison was inches below the existing floor explaining this. Many investigators say places where bloody battles took place often hold the souls or memories of soldiers that had traumatic deaths.

    Why was the house taken down ?
    It looks like it became a Tea House in the Post Card shot. With a sign above the door.
    Perhaps someone could shed some light upon this.

    • @DaysofHorror
      @DaysofHorror  Месяц назад +3

      It was in some shape or form a tea house or inn at one time. I would presume it just ran into despair upon both deaths of the owners and being in a desolate area. It may just have been too much hard work to bring it back to its glory. Hopefully, someone else can answer this good question.

    Great video but just one annoying point. Darwen is pronounced DARWAN or DARRAN. Darwin is in Australia. You continually refer to the house as a farmhouse but I always thought it was either an alehouse or cafe? I walked that exact route back home and over past Darwen Tower once with a mate after visiting the Royal at Tockholes at around midnight, and there was definitely an atmosphere but sadly or not, I didn't see anything. I have subscribed of course and look forward to watching your videos.

      I can let you into a secret with this - on the morning when we set off to film this, the weather wasn't that bad. It was only when we reached the car park, it began to rain a little, but by the time we got onto the path leading onto the moorland, the rain came over very quickly. I was fuming and we were very close to calling it off and going back home. But we love covering these stories and visiting these fantastic locations, and it was Vickie that said we should carry on and see what we can do. I think, as you say, the weather probably helped with the final outcome!

      We only use Ai for thumbnails and b-roll to try and hopefully show people some scenes that we feel can add to the story. As fo Ai being used to make a FULL video, then I agree. This is why myself and Vickie visit the locations of where all the stories we have covered, are. We don't want to simply sit in front of a green screen, adding backgrounds and Ai just to tell a story, we want to visit these amazing places and to feel the history. People seem to enjoy seeing these areas too, which is a massive bonus for us.
