- In this video, I take you to one of England's most impressive castles. Bamburgh, on the north east coast of Northumberland, was once the capital of the Kingdom of Northumbria. Now in the ownership of the Armstrong family, its open to the public and is most definitely worth a visit. For this video, I'll be telling you about the ghosts that are said to haunt the castle, such as Green Jane, Dr John Sharp and the Pink Lady.

The Jolly Reiver is my project aiming to preserve and promote the forgotten folklore and history of rural Britain. Primarily focusing on folklore and legends, you’ll not find me trying to deconstruct these old stories or trying to rationalise them with science and psychology. Instead I will present them as they were always told by our forebears, and leave the conclusions up to you. Videos are filmed on location to show you exactly where these stories took place.
Visit Bamburgh: www.bamburghca...
I’m descended from the Forster family who lived at Bamburgh. Sir Thomas Forster b. 1471 at Bamburgh, was my 16th great grandfather. Love Bamburgh. I have also found I am descended from the Greys of Chillingham and the Neville’s of Raby among others. Have been researching my family tree for 20 years now.
me too we could be DNA cousins:)
Great job on the research. Keep on.
Look into the greys of yuba city California

Me too, i found it fascinating that 40 generations ago (800 years) equals one trillion grandparents. Mathematically, of course, many of those are repeating. In other words, if you have any English relatives, then you're related to practically anyone whoever lived in that castle, as well as.... every other castle in the UK, possibly Charlemagne's empire too.
A stranger is just a relative who you haven't met yet.
I'm an American, but have always admired Britain's rich, long and interesting history and culture. This castle is astounding, and what great stories surrounding it. Combined with my interest of the paranormal, really enjoying your videos and and the effort put into making them.
Thank you mate, I’m glad you’re enjoying!

@@AngloSaxon449 my apologies
Yesssss I love all folklore/folktale ..but old GHOSTS & hauntings in ancient castles etc are my absolute favorite!!
Glad you’re a fan!
The last kingdom brought me here lol I’d love to visit one day
I was on holiday in Northumberland a few years back and fell in love with the whole area. Bamburgh Castle is beautiful and combined with Lindisfarne, I would recommend that people should visit both sites when in this location. Just magical.
Me too!
❤
Agreed! Lindisfarne is magical, you can feel the history all around
@@twintwo1913 we didn't get there. We were due to go back and I fell and broke my arm.
Yes, I agree, it's a lovely place and well worth a visit.
Hadrian's Wall is a great walk. Warkworth is beautiful, too. The castle isn't as big as Bamburgh, but still very cool.
I just love this presenter. The way he combines the history of the location mingled with folklore, sightings and experiences of ghosts really makes us realize he's done his homework. I look forward to all of your videos and thanks so much for your creating them.
Thank you for your kind comment Julianne, it’s much appreciated and I’m glad you enjoy!
maybe leave a little food at the top of the steps for that green jane.. that was so sad.. wishing all those that passed do find peace at last.. great video
Nowadays the castle looks impressive at night because it’s well lit by all the lights and lamps around, but I bet in the times of old where there was no electricity the castle at night was imposing, ominous and eerie more than anything.
Nothing i have ever seen has made me want to visit a castle more than watching this.. blows my mind that it is still privately owned. ( so happy about that) i know castles are but this is so so large, way old and not being able to live in with the other that is, and so beautiful. I live away and miss England so much and this just makes my heart boost and swell with the love i have for my country.. thank you fir taking us around a magnificent place and will see if you have done others, once i finish this one..
Thanks for the kind comment Alison, glad you enjoyed!
Uthred, this is your chance! Lets take it!!
I am part of the saxon reenactment group (acle) who often camp over in the castle, and can confirm we often encounter ghosts in the night!
Do they fart?
👍🏼 Nice
Your love for this place shines through... Great work mate.
Thanks man!
What a hidden gem of a storyteller. Absolutely intrigued.
Thank you :-)
I can see why that’s your favorite place on Earth. That is an absolutely gorgeous place that just looks like it holds some magical secrets.
Yes it’s so majestic
What a welcomed surprise. Beautiful Bamburgh castle. Thank you for bringing the tales alive .You're a talented lad.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed!
What a great, well researched show. The quality is good enough for tv. You deserve a larger audience, sir.
Cheers mate, glad you liked it!
The quality is too good for TV.
U joking he boring 😴
I could listen to these forever. Wonderfully written and wonderfully narrated. In the US people though castles were just like huge mansions and had no idea how much tragedy and violence went on ther, dungeons and prisons and all the rest.
I love a good ghost story and didn't know Bamburgh Castle had one. I'm an American and my last name is Bambrough. Even though the original castle was destroyed and the new one sold to another family, it still means a lot to me because of my ancestry. It's my biggest dream to visit there some day.
Castles have been a lifelong interest of mine. The buildings, the history and local stories. This is a castle i have never been to but i want to visit as soon as i can this year. Thank you xxx
You’ll love it here!
I remember this castle from the tapestries in that hallway. Beautiful
I attended a wedding at bamburgh. Absolutely stunning and very imposing
Amazing. It's so old that even owner/caretaker names are unknown and/or uncertain. Thank you for bringing this beautiful piece of history to us.
That was fantastic thank you.
When I was ten and in the corridor with the tapestries on the wall I was adamant I felt a hand squeeze my upper arm. I was told it was the Pink Lady choosing her new man. At ten this felt more a hindrance than romantic. My spooky story did got played on the Clinton Baptiste Paranormal Podcast but he just took the piss out of me 😂
Anyway, keep up the great work, looking forward to more.
I live in Northumberland & not to far away from the castle. I never get tired of being there & seeing this majestic place. Thank you for the great history lesson to. You do a great job. Bravo.
Cheers mate!
We went to Bamburgh on holiday when I was a child in the 80s. Stunning castle and beautiful white sandy beach.
i recommend a visit to all who can! wonderful place and dont miss Holy Island and its viking past next to it! Alnwick too, in the same area! enjoy!
I agree that the beach view is the best. I visited several years ago and stayed at my uncle’s place in Seahouses, just down the road. Had so much fun visiting the area. So beautiful and great people.
The shots of the sand blowing on the surface of the beach are mesmerizing. I live in Arizona and this is one of my dream locations. Sadly, I missed it when I lived in London in 2000. One day I hope return to visit, but for the time being I will add Polanski's Macbeth to my Netflix queue :)
There is an episode of 'Robin of Sherwood' where the castle and beach figure heavily. Satanic nuns! Hearing the story of the witches on the beach made me wonder if that was where the scriptwriter, Richard Carpenter, got the idea from. It is used a lot as a film set. ruclips.net/video/jQm7ZyFt6Y8/видео.html
Perhaps the most beautiful video you have done, Bamburgh Castle is a place many long to visit .. myself included ..
And you are so correct in stating the castle is illuminated beautifully at night ..
These stories you tell of the ghosts found hear are heartbreaking and incredibly sad ..
To me the one that will stay with me forever ., is the tale you tell of the schoolchildren happily walking hand in hand along the beach .. and the little girl who looked behind her to see the hand holding hers was ., unattached to anyone ..
This made me cry .. for the poor lonely soul trapped there .. who only wanted to hold someone's hand .. 😭🖤⚘
Thank you for these stories .. they are mesmerizing ⚘
Jen999💜💙
Wow.
As a Geordie, I've visited the town and beach with my family over the years but never had time to explore the castle proper, but I would love to in the future.
Your videos are very informative and it's always nice hearing another Northern accent amongst everyone else on the internet!
Glad you enjoyed :-)
What a lovely, facinating, wonderful place! Thank you for taking us!
Cup of coffee and time to enjoy yet another engaging episode of ghost stories 🙂
Hope you enjoy!
At the end of the movie Seven Kings Must Die, Osbert told his father Uhtred that they were going to rebuild the castle in stone and at the end of the movie when they pushed the camera away and showed the castle on this present day in stone it was very exciting to see, I cried so much.
I love history and the paranormal. This is so cool
Would love more of these type of videos, at 21 I literally find nothing more exciting than looking around castles, this is next on my list. Thanksss.
There’ll be more on the way for sure!
I appreciate your calm way of talking & not including any loud bangs or thrill music. I'm gonna binge these before going to sleep from now on! Great work!
Dear Jolly Reiver,
Thanks for the incredible videos, especially this one! I can hardly wait for more about this castle, it’s magnificent.

Cheers James, much appreciated!

Thank you for this video, being a Northumbrian & proud of it, i love anything from our county.
Id just like to add that i often go to a very old castle which in is semi ruins but has a marvellous atmosphere & not widely known about & its
Edlingham Castle near Rothbury.
The first time i visted here in 2006, i sat in one of window bays
& gained a strong impression of the name Margaret & could perceive the lowing of cattle!
It was perfectly empty & on a sunny afternoon.
Im an empath & pick up on residual energy of past spirits
( im not a fortune teller nor do i
Do ghost " thingies" its just something i have always done & feel privileged to be able to pick up such phenomena)
Anyway a few weeks later my then boyfriend & i were near the castle one night so detoured to see it in darkness
It seemed alive to me with spirits
As we wandered about, me being near the Barbican i felt an unknown sensation of someone
"Going through" me & the name
Francis ( male)
Later from the one remaining tower we both witnessed a tall person holding a toddler, both were white figures & both just faded away.
We also saw some small person a child or very small adult jumping from pile to pile of rubble & stone blocks, this figure moved very fast!
It should have been scary but our experiences there have never held any fear at all.
Later on my boyfriend looked up
Edlingham & found it once housed a lady called Margaret !!!
She kept livestock within the castle & slept with her cattle for warmth!
I was really surprised to read this as it was worth noting & my impression had been very clear!
No mention of a Francis nor of the white person with child & the jumping about small spirit.
However one thing did stand out to me & it was this...
I felt resident spirits from a very long past were unhappy about some living people who had used the place in the past
( got the late 1970s) who had conjured up some negative energies & had not returned them back where they came from
The so called satanists became frightened & had run off before returning these negative entities
The long gone spirits who'd had affiliation to the castle & cared for it, didnt like these bad
" interloper" entities & had kept them down & in check but their once happy " existance" in spirit at the castle was disturbed & they asked for help.
Im no exorcist or spiritual cleanser so i was unable to do anything for them & have since felt sad to have not helped them
Im sure a priest or church person could help, but im not a church goer so...?
One thing i do know is that of the buildings still remaining of Edlingham is the Solarium, Tower & winding staircase.
When the made the Kevin Costner & Alan Rickman film " Robin Prince of Thieves" they shot the scene where Robin returns home from the Crusades & finds his dying father in his castle ruins
Well that scene was shot at Edlingham in the Solarium!
Its worth a visit, there are no fees & parking is free & its not crawling with tourists
I love Edlingham, dont know why,
I just do, despite unwanted spirits!
Thanks for your vids
🇬🇧👧
Great vid, stayed at Holy Island 14 years in succession & love the area. Your presentation style is very pleasant at an easy pace, with no irritating superfluous music. Thanks!
I loved it thank you for keeping the past alive and giving us the amazing stories
This must have taken a lot of time and effort to research Reiver. Kudos. Another exceptional video.
Cheers man, took a long while this one but pleased with the outcome
It shows. I bet it'll be picking up views for years.
Loved Bamburgh Castle since i was a wee lad, great video
Thank you :-)
Your finest work to date, sir! We visited Bamburgh again in February this year and it will always be one of our favourite destinations. The contrast between the humble and picturesque village and the awesome castle always impresses and evokes a truly romantic spirit. I also discovered Alnwick Gold ale in Bamburgh this year, which will make a return visit an even greater joy. Looking forward to your next film. 👍
Excellent mate, let me know next time you’re up and we’ll grab a pint if you like!

I love your videos. Thank you so much for taking me where I will never be able to go. A fan in the USA.
My pleasure! Hope I can show you more places soon!
@ 10:53 On the left side you can see a Hand Pointing thoughts something, right after he said that :V
It's maybe just one of the other Visitors at the Castle but still spooky ^^
I used to go to an annual pilgrimage to Lindisfarne-for many years-when I was a teen. Bamburgh was always as if covered in a veil of mystery. Now, thanks to your video I understand why.
A beautiful place , a beautiful County. My favourite place.
Thanks for the video, I love Bamburgh ,especially in the winter
I'm amazed at how they can build on top of volcanos 🌋 like that, Edinburgh is similar too. I'm in awe looking at castles 🏰 when I visit one ..
Thanks for this, and looking forward to Lindisfarne! Many memories for me, used to live in Northumberland in the Seventies, now the other side of the world...
Looks like a *beautiful* place - both the castle and the surrounding area!
It is!
I walk the beach at Bamburgh most weekends, never seen Uhtred yet though.
As someone who lives in Northumberland, thank you so much for sharing local stories and legends! Do you know of Seaton Delaval Hall? There’s a couple of good ghost stories surrounding it as well as a disused mausoleum in the grounds.
My pleasure! And yes there’s some good tales from there!
That castle is so beautiful inside.
It is indeed
Good work mate. I haven't visited Bamburgh Castle for a long while.... must get there soon 😁
The history of the castle is always fascinating!
Thomas forster is a distant relative of mine :) thanks for sharing, it's great to see some stuff on the castle. I visited last time i was there and it's just a stunningly beautiful castle
Imagine to own an ancient family castle with such a long history 😍.
I've been by this castle and never pictured it as so intact and open to visitors. I'm amazed and next time in that area will definitely stop in.
Definitely worth a visit!
It is " intact because it was completely rebuilt as a Victorian gentleman's home ( in the romantic gothic style by Lord Armstrong- the munitions millionaire)
I love your channel. I always throw on a video when I'm cooking.
Glad you enjoy!
Stunning, Just watched the Ultrid movie and have to visit it. Thanks for sharing. From South Africa❤

I really liked this story of Britain’s old ghosts. Subscribed!
That is absolutely beautiful! 8d live there any day!!!
Thank you for this video. I vaguely remember hearing the castle mentioned but I have never actually seen footage of it. It does look very impressive and beautiful. What a pleasure to see a castle like this which receives so little coverage.
Good video, the castle is pretty great too...
Visited Bamburgh Castle this summer, but I had no idea about all these stories. Thanks for this interesting video.
I love Castles. Thanks for them.
Been visiting Bamburgh all my life and like you, it’s my favourite place on Earth...... thanks for the past legends and stories, very interesting 😊
I happen to live in a medieval Dutch castle in het Netherlands and we have the same canon, only smaller. I don’t know if it is a Dutch design, but it is exactly the same.
That’s so cool is it big.
@@DaveGrohlsprincess not really big, it was the donjon, the big castle which stood beside our ‘ house’ is demolished in 1841. This was the donjon or advance fort. We do have four towers and a big oak gate and a bridge with a moat. And a very beautiful garden with lots of roses 🌹 and a walled garden and topiary.
It is a gorgeous place ..many happy memories.great channel.💙uk

Visited here when I was about 15, some of the people I was with (of a similar age) were actually quite scared at the prospect of being in a haunted castle!
This castle ( or the Saxon fortress that stood there before) was featured in a series of books by Bernard Cornwell. It follows the adventures of a Saxon lord named Utred . Same guy who wrote the Sharp series.
Which has been made into a Netflix series called The Last Kingdom.
@@williamd1891 Is that what that is? Heard of it, never saw it.
@@jeffpotipco736 He's also son of Utred.
