  • Join me as I walk along the old trackbed from Leiston to Aldeburgh. This lovely old line used to move stock from Aldeburgh fisheries to the main line and also passengers from the main line through Saxmundham and Leiston onto the holiday resorts of Thorpeness and Aldeburgh.

    Next time you are over here in Suffolk, have a walk along the beautiful Southwold to Halesworth line which is not far from Leiston.
    The good news is the track bed is nearly bought back and fresh (3 foot guage) lines are going back down. They have an engine shed in Southwold with a brand new working replica 'Blyth" which will have some more track to play on soon!
    There's also more track going back down in Leiston at the old Garrett works and they still have the working little 0-4-0 shunter steam loco there.

    Nice to see you've been to Suffolk and covered quite a bit of ground! I've not been that way for about 10 years. I used to ride a charity bike event with a few guys I was at school with in memory of one of our friends who passed away some time ago. He had lived in Woodbridge for quite a while and a memorial seat dedicated to his memory is by the Tide Mill there. The ride took us over Leiston level crossing and on to Dunwich where we went on the beach before returning to Woodbridge by a different route. I often wondered how much of the branch remained.
    The concrete fence posts and the sectional P-Way hut are typical LNER and it makes me wonder just how many of those are still sitting forlornly in remote places on disused lines as they seem to have survived the ravages of time very well. Those huts were cold draughty spots even with a good fire in the stove! Not as cosy as the sleeper built ones but home to the gangs of platelayers and a refuge in bad weather.
    Another enjoyable video and a delightful walk by the look of it, especially with a pint at the end!

      Thank you for watching. A favourite area of mine and hopefully one day a place I will call home!! Not a lot left to see but enough that it made it an enjoyable walk. That line would be used so much now such a shame. We are going to Woodbridge soon so I will look out for that.

    Nice video! The station house at Aldeburgh was a little further away from the pub that you showed. More in line with the front of the houses on the main road. I was born in one of these in 1961 and the trains pulled out straight across the road. The newly built 'station cottages' is the closest you'd get to it now.

    Leiston is pronounced Layston. No spur was ever made to Sizewell. At 45.28 you were at Sheepwash crossing, where a "ballast line" went to Thorpeness, just skirting the Mere. Many thanks

    Good to see this. I cant see why this was track was allowed to be destroyed for the sake of a couple of metres of farm land. It really needs to be a shared user path between both towns.

    • @MiddyExplores
      @MiddyExplores  2 года назад

      Thank you for watching. Its a shame the line was lost at all given the amount of cars now trying to get into aldeburgh everyday! I totally agree it would be an excellent cycle way/footpath if opened up properly. Cant help feeling the closure of this small line was a real shame

    Great video . Looked like you had a good day for it too , nothing like combining a break and railway walk .
    Was fascinating to see a line I was not aware of . As you said would been a great line today to easy road congestion and increase the popularity of a lovely seaside town , with amazing fish and chips .

      Thanks for watching. Like most of these lines it was incredibly short sighted to just rip them up when they used to have good traffic and they would definitely have it today. Was great weather and is a lovely flat walk.

    Extremely picturesque, some great railway stuff to be found. The gates at the start were magnificent and on the walk some of those crossing gate posts were very sturdy to say the least. That building at @33:35 is called Crossing Cottage, I suppose it speaks for itself!!! The platelayers hut was outstanding, to think it's still standing proud after all this time, shame about the graffiti though. After such a wonderful walk I was hoping to find a lovely preserved station, but my hopes were dashed!!!! Still a great video though,

    • @MiddyExplores
      @MiddyExplores  2 года назад +1

      Thanks as always. Thorpeness halt is quite pleasant but by no means preserved and Aldeburgh has all but gone sadly. The plate layers hut was a real highlight but I just love the old posts and sleepers that just randomly appeared ! I enjoyed making this one it was a lovely day through some lovely countryside. Back to the GCR later this week...

      @@MiddyExplores It's nice when whoever looks after these lines uses old structure such as sleepers, they do that a lot around the Notts/Derbyshire area. I'm planning a trip to the GCR too, Lutterworth Station, Brackley viaduct and station plus the M45 bridge are all high on my list. If I can manage a Sunday away from home I also intend to get to Calvert Station before it completely disappears.

    That was a lovely long walk! It almost felt like I was with you. A shame about the nonexistent bridge; someone was obviously pulling your leg. The plate layer’s hut was stunning, except for the usual mindless graffiti. That pint and bag of chips were both richly deserved. Keep ‘em coming!

    YES - you are so right. Everywhere build a bit here and there to stop the re-opening possibilities. Well as these folks all over now have to pay for their cars fuel (and it will go on rising), perhaps they may not think things were such a bargain. Both Major Parties too so non political. 50 years on we need these routes for the future , rebuilding on new routes will take place in many places, but at what cost. All current routes should be protected and at least made to be Green ways for now. Wife has just kicked my soap box away soap box away so I will shut up (for now).

Who on earth thought it OK to close railways with baby boomers needing homes? Bring them back! Enjoy your chips and watch out for the chip thief gulls!

      Its an old line that is only used very occasionally for the nuclear station. I have never seen a train on it in all the time we have been going there. I would imagine these are the original tracks.
