  • A reconstruction of the lost railway link between Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth!
    #Lowestoft #suffolk #GreatYarmouth #Norfolk #Railways
It opened on 13 July 1903 as the first direct railway link between the two towns and was constructed by the Great Eastern Railway and the Midland and Great Northern Railway in the hope of encouraging the development of holiday resorts along the coast. In 1953, when major repairs to the Breydon Viaduct were required, it was decided to discontinue through services from the Midland and Great Northern to Lowestoft and to divert London trains to Lowestoft via Norwich. The decision was taken to close the route on 4 May 1970 in favour of bus services which were judged adequate for most of the year.

As a Lowestoft boy born and raised, this was so nice to see. You have done a great job. Thank you.

Me too, Paul. I can just about remember steam engines running along the line which ran past the end of our garden. Even after they'd removed the track I thought, that'd make a great footpath/cycle route. But within a few months the idiots had sold off a plot and a house went up, making that impossible.

That was superb. Amazing how much of the route is unrecognisable today. The Breydon Bridge is what amazes me. My Mother used to travel this route when she was young but she tells me she doesn't remember that bridge at all. Those Victorians were amazing with their engineering.

Wow really nicely put together. Amazingly enough one of my first vivid memories was that line I took as a small boy with the family in 1970 before it closed. Dad wanted to take it one last time i was told. I have a picture of me on that train.

Excellent video and animation, Thanks. We would holiday in Hopton when I was young and regularly took the train to either Lowestoft or Great Yarmouth. so sad that this line no longer exists.

    Marvellous use of your sources.
I shall now look for others by you and hope to find the more 'obliterated' routes in East Suffolk and Norfolk particularly the M&GN to Melton . C from Gt .Yarmouth.

I found it soon after my first viewing of the day. As a chartered surveyor -no longer practising -- I particularly enjoy your map work.. I hope that you get an opportunity to see the collection of pictures collated by Dennis Greeno and Richard Adderson and just published by the Midland and Gt Northern Joint Rly Socy. @@ghosttrainlostrailways

Very well done. You should ask Russell Walker if you could use his Hopton On Sea photos as they show the embankment which was flattened for housing. Also, the Gorleston station wasn't on the roundabout. It was half way up the current embankment, just the other side of the bridge you can see in the modern picture. They actually dug down to a lower level to build the road.

Travelled on this line from London to Lowestoft then to Hopton holiday camp in the sixties. While staying in Hopton went to Yarmouth South Town, first time it was double tracked, then singled and now shamefully bulldozed.

The present station at Yarmouth is a bit far from the beach - to which it's a 25 minute walk. Pity the station at Yarmouth Beach is gone.
