Thanks for watching. Sadly a lot of it is forgotten and does get any maintenance at all. This one was definitely in better condition to most. Plenty more coming up 👍

There used to be no fence at the non flooded end - the very kind man at the house there let us through his garden to explore the tunnel! So nice to see it again. Thanks for the video!

I finally got the chance to watch this before work this morning, and it was well worth it. An absolutely beautifully structured tunnel with some decent finds, including the Coke tin!! I'm not surprised there's no graffiti as even the youths of that area wouldn't want to battle the marshland at the entrance. It sounds like it was a bit of a job to get to the south portal, but very clearly well worth the effort, very well done.

@@MiddyExplores Thanks but I've managed to find it on the OS and Google Maps. I may well give it time for the undergrowth to pull back, however if it's as wet as that after the summer we've just had, imagine what it would be like in winter!!!!

This is an amazing video. This tunnel on the Market Harborough to Stamford line that was, is in exceptionally good condition, considering that the line has been closed for fifty-six years. The salt coming out of the brickworks gives great effects too, especially with your light shining through. What surprises me with a tunnel this length is that there are no refuges for trackworkers to go in, when a train was going through, assuming that the route was double-tracked. Pity that you had a rough time with that bog at one end, and all that water! Many thanks for this showing.

Thank you and thanks for watching. It really is in great condition and like you I was surprised at the lack of refuges for such a long tunnel. It was certainly fun trying to get in!

Campaign medal deserved for this one! Definitely above and beyond the call of duty getting in through the everglades just to reach the portal. More than worth the effort though. I find it very hard now to realise that I have been through there on the train several times in the late 50s and early 60s. I also remember seeing the smoke vents from the main road (A47 I think) as I cycled from my home of those days in Leicester to my aunts house in Norfolk. 128 miles in 10 to 12 hours depending on the wind and weather. Those vents were always fascinating to me realising that I was above the tunnel. My first stop en route was a transport café near Morcott and the second was stopping for a break to eat a sandwich while on the bridge over the East Coast Mainline at Peterborough (long before there was a bypass). Next the A47 ran alongside the even then almost abandoned M&GNR line between Eye and Wisbech and after another transport café stop (Coronation Café) watching goods trains going up and over the big bridge at Guyhirn (GE&GNJt line from March to Wisbech) as I cycled along towards Wisbech and Kings Lynn. Not much of any of the fen lines left now but still a lot of structures left.
I've really enjoyed this video as I have not been down that way for many years. One thought I had towards the end of the video was the white substance on the tunnel walls leached lime from the rock the tunnel goes through. I can't find my geological maps but from rough memory I think it might well pass through the Oolitic Limestone deposits, some of which contained sufficient iron to have been worked as iron ore in the East Leicestershire and Northamptonshire area. Worth looking into?
As I'm now 75 and no longer so good on my feet it is great to be able to go on journeys on the videos that guys like you put on the Internet. I still have the interest after a life spent working on the railway but find walking difficult after cancer treatment so watching the video is a way of keeping the interest going. I noticed several bullhead rail chairs on the ground in the tunnel. They look like LNER S1 chairs or possibly LMS AS1 if you see any others on your travels look closely at them as they have the railway initials the date they were cast and often the name or initials of the foundry which made them and the type such as S1, S1J (joint chairs) or L1, M1, S2 etc. From that data you can see what kind of track was there and (as long as they haven't been reused from elsewhere) they give you a good idea when the line was last relaid.
Thanks again for your sterling efforts getting into the tunnel and letting us all seethe results. I look forward to seeing more of your videos in the future.
    Best wishes, Rod.

Thank you for watching and thank you for sharing your story, I always find it fascinating to hear of the days when these cuttings that seem so far away from being a railway were actually travelled on! It certainly was a mission but we'll worth it! I am so glad you enjoyed it and there are many more videos coming up 👍

Very interesting to read your acquaintance with this tunnel. I'm I right in thinking that although the tunnel was built for a double line to run through, there was only ever one track laid? This might explain why there were no refuge areas in the tunnel.

I went there in June 1989, and I have to say the tunnel seems to have deteriorated terribly since then !
Both portal cuttings were more or less clear of trees, there were no fences at all, there are/were steps leading down to the line at the portal you ended the video at.
And there was absolutely zero salt deposits on the walls or floor. The water was only an inch or so deep at the end too.
It's also strange how everywhere now lists the length of the tunnel as - what was it you said - 448 yards ? It used to be listed as 671 yards.
