  • Join me as I take a walk along the Cloud Trail which was once the railway between Ashby de la Zouch and Derby. Even though this line closed to passengers in 1930 it continued as a freight line until 1980 and was used during the war becoming a military line from 1939-45. in this first part of a three part series I discover this line still has plenty to show from its distant past.

Been around there myself recently, I can smell railways, used and disused, love that Culvert at the start. The Ashby Canal is close to my heart, nice to see that brick work hasn’t been tagged!

Thanks for watching. It's a lovely walk and certainly worth a visit. I know the feeling! Driving around and seeing a bridge or line of trees and wondering what it used to be!!

Some very interesting finds re the metal work on the side of the track bed, great to see no-one has nicked them too. That stone bridge was a beauty, absolutely solid by the looks of it, looking forward to part 2 later.

    Hi Pete
    Great video mate.
I love the cloud trail, cycled it hundreds of times over the years, especially in may time when the fields are all yellow with the rape seed,
If you’d of turned right about 300 yards from the car park there’s a great path that takes you up to a viewpoint which looks down into the quarry.
The stone in the bridge is probably the local breedon buff.
I remember watching the boeing Dreamliner following the Trent after it had a fly by past rolls Royce when it was first made.
    Look forward to part 2

Where we live. Aston on trent. 15 minutes and we're on it. Cycled this in excess of a hundred times.
    Bliss.
By the way it's Bardon quarry.
    Thanks ❤️

Hi Middy, great video. Did you know you can get from the car park the other way along the dismantled railway line towards Ashby, coming out on Melbourne Road! Some is a bit overgrown but much is already a path. It joins the Coleorton line and fantastic tunnel at Newbold. Lots of bridges and features remain

Hi Jacqui and thanks for watching. You have read my mind as this is whats coming up in part 4! i havent filmed it yet so thank you for the heads up for the features. I have already filmed the tunnel at Newbold and its own video is on the channel. Thanks again

Ah good. I'd been interested to know what those boiler looking things are down by the bridge at the Trent end.
