    Spot on. I live rurally in England. There are few resources and little officially supported facilities. We donate ten percent of our grocery shopping budget to the church food bank each week. We also send cat and dog food in addition to that. Not everyone can do this. We may not be able to in the future. Like you, wood stoves and cookers help us a lot but it’s looking like a very cold winter is looming for many.

    That’s a good idea about corporate lap blankets. In Manhattan NY, the building manager/owners decide about heat, which is mostly oil. Several times we had no heat at all in offices for days and sometimes for nearly two weeks. We had our coats and scarves on and the firms may buy a couple heaters, but the staff went out and bought more on our own.

      That's because a lot of people have realised that people what go to food banks, are mostly on benefits and get everything paid for them. going to a food bank is a double whammy for them.

      @@46joe Many in my area go to food banks even though they already get food stamps. No one asks, as they are not allowed to get into your personal business. This leaves the door open for abuse. An acquaintance of mine who gets food stamps used to give me all the food he didn't want. I don't need it. I buy my own food, and I wish he didn't do that. Another person would call me on the phone with a truck FULL of food from the food bank and beg me to come and take most of it. I would, and would distribute it to those I knew didn't have a lot of money. I would keep a little of it, but I always felt guilty.

      @@46joe in the UK there is a cap on benefits that is a lot lower than what I used to earn in a nice job, and no rent or mortgage for me. But I spent years paying off debt that I accrued when my marriage broke up and I was a single parent, so I never had any savings. I don't know how families on minimum wage jobs cope.

    Sometimes I think about why people use the food bank. Most would say that was a stupid question, as it obviously means they cannot afford to buy food. I would have to take a middle ground on that. The reason is because for many, not all, they are spending money on luxuries they simply cannot afford, and it leaves them with no money for food, so they go to the food bank. I have to say that for many, it's not that they cannot afford food, it's that they cannot afford their new car payment. Or they cannot afford the very high car insurance. Or they cannot afford that cruise they just took that wiped out their bank account. Food banks are like cash to some people. They figure if they use the food bank, that is $300+ a month they won't spend on groceries, so they can put that toward their new car payment. The day was when charity or government food boxes were nothing glamorous. Flour, cheese, peanut butter, corn meal, etc. were in there. Today that is not the case, with fresh produce of all kinds, desserts, and expensive meats and fish, diapers, baby formula and even pet food. I think it's wonderful that we've come so far in our offerings. But it brings with it the ones who simply take advantage of free food to enable their lifestyle. Thank you for all you do, Karen. Always a pleasure watching your videos!

      I don't normally leave negative comments but I was shocked by your attitude to people using foodbanks and the like Before my accident I volunteered at a place linked to foodbank and dealing with people who needed that assistance Very few could be blamed for poor choices. Most were either homeless or paying high rents and certainly hadn't wasted money on cruises. In the real world people are hurting and your comment shows an ignorance of that struggle. Children are hungry and without this help a return to the era of rickets and destitution is a real possibility Don't judge people so harshly,it could be someone you care about in that position one day

    • @amandachapman4708
      @amandachapman4708 10 часов назад

      That's not what I see here in the UK. Food banks here are a last resort for people really struggling with basic cost of living, insecure or no accommodation, and a benefits system that is ridiculously difficult to negotiate and that forces people to wait weeks and weeks for what they are entitled to.

    • @katherinekeon7034

      @@heatherwatson9564 Agreed. My guts got ripped by the words in that post. I know some senior citizens who were able to get a vehicle loan at an extremely high rate. And the state that you either work or you burn because the governor doesn't care whether or not you get water or a break. Or you can even end up in jail if you hand somebody some water in the wrong place. I figured no one food here in Florida the lines will be a few hours long and hundreds of 120° weather. 120 to 150 ° concrete pavement or Dusty dirt. I don't know anybody that does any of those things. No one here in South Central Florida on the Gulf of Mexico in Citrus county. Is going to the churches for food because they're living large and having luxuries.

      I have volunteered in food banks. For many people it is an embarrassment to have to stand in line and then answer some questions and finally pick through the offerings for that day.most food banks have a lot of choices but not all do. Perhaps there is only white bread that day and no whole wheat or only corn and peas for veg. Most of us would find using a food bank a humbling experience. Currently, I oversee a “little food pantry” for our church. This summer it has been a real challenge to keep it stocked. I am not sure if it is because school is out or generally more need.

If you need to carry oil in a car it's either a 50 year old car or there is something very wrong with engine. I get an eye test every 2 years through work.

    My family has always preped since my Great Aunt and her daughter were bombed in World War 2. They were saved by being in the basement kitchen at the time where they dived under the kitchen table and where the dresser fell ontop of that. Two sturdyold Victorian wooden pieces of furniture. In the dresser were a stock of tinned goods ( including fruit with liquid to drink) this helped them survive the 4 days it took to dig them out. My poor cousin could not bear shut doors let alone locked ones. She still cant and is approaching her 90s. So the lesson is that prepping really can save lives!

    Hi Karen, hope your all well, we all know what a crap “summer” we’ve had and we’ll probably be told by the “scientists” it was the warmest, driest summer from 1914 etc 😂 my wife has predicted, with the summer as it is, we are in for a very bad winter, she’s usually on the ball with her predictions, in order to be safe, rather than not, we have got a lot more fuel, logs, coal, gas bottles etc better to be prepared, stay safe folks 😊

    Just noticed Edinburgh Woollen Mill online has a very nice 100% Merino wool cardigan for £40. Seems like a good price ❤
