Jane at the frugal queen in France did a video a while ago about breaking down your monthly food budget down to daily amount then down to an amount for each meal. I found it very interesting.

I was watching the new Channel 5 "Warship" programme last night and they feed the sailors 3 full meals everyday, breakfast, lunch and dinner, (1400 sailors) for a costing of £5 per day per person. That works out at £1.67 per meal. I was awestruck because those plates for lunch alone were stacked high! They also said that for the Sunday roast, they use 50kg parsnips and 50kg of carrots...wow, how they manage those logistics flabbergasts me!!

Would the galley kitchen there be getting their produce on reduced wholesale prices I wonder? Not the retail prices we pay. Just a thought.

Our local butcher was selling whole butterfly (boneless) chickens for $5 each last week, marinated or plain. I bought a few, froze two. Cooked one of them for the two men in the family (I don't eat a lot of meat myself) and there were still leftovers. My problem is lack of freezer space for good specials I might see.

I have the same issue. When I find a deal like that, I cook them in a crock pot or roaster for about 8 hrs with onion scraps, celery leaves, a few bay leaves and a good bit of water. Then I pull the meat and pressure can it. Amazing shelf stable ingredient.

Just this week I've been thinking of the cost per portion of some of the meals I've been making. Now, since 2022 I've kept track of every penny I've spent on food, and I can tell you my monthly averages, etc. However, I sometimes get a longing to eat out. It's a great reminder to compare what I would have to pay doing that to what I know I could purchase and cook the food for. The price difference is usually huge, and I just keep needing to remind myself of how much better it is for my family!

I love costing meals, its a hobby of mine.
We have one or two more costly night time meals each week, the rest are inexpensive and carefully costed out to balance the weekly budget.
Its like a game for me and keeps my brain and maths skills sharp. 😊

A tip from 'past me'. I made a massive chilli in the slow cooker and froze half of it. Last night i was going out and so left the lad ( in his 30s - at home due to relationship break up) sweet jacket potatoes, chilli from the freezer and cheese. I threw a quick but healthy cake in the oven alongside the potatoes. 15 mins prep = 1 cake for the week + meal for hungry lad and me. Thank you 'past me'! Im trying to get me a list of very easy meals with minimum prep, that are still ' cook from scratch' - suggestions, folks?
One way of looking at cost for this meal = £0.00 as all the ingredients came from shopping 2 weeks/1 month ago! But even working it out as if i had gone and bought the ingredients, i think it would come out at about £1.25 per portion, max.

I bet one ginormous motivation comes from "present you" feeling ever so grateful JUST NOW to "past you" and the work "past you" put in to make the present bliss possible.
There's gotta be some trick to have potentially unmotivated you remember that bliss in its full glory to get unmotivated you to turn into "can't wait to provide for blissful present you!😊😊😊

Lasagna ( buy the noodles that do not need to be cooked) , pulled pork made in a slow cooker, different types of chili ie a turkey chili a meatless one etc, all types of soups which can be made as a whole meal by adding some cheese and bread when you serve it, stuffed peppers stuffed with a mixture of ground meat and rice, make a roasted turkey and then completely remove all the meat and put in different containers to add to things like soup or to make turkey salad sandwiches to eat with the soup, then make a broth with the carcass and some root vegetables. Mini crustless quiches. Curries. Lots of ideas to help u out.

I wouldn't take the time personally to do all of that work of figuring out how much each item costs. I already know from experience how much things cost generally and can buy groceries that are more inexpensive to make a complete meal without figuring out how much I spent. I save money that way.
