Fruit and veg was often picked several days ago, then transported to a 'central hub' and then redistributed by the supermarket to your nearest store. So it can have been on the road for the best part of a week. To give you an example the nearest 'central hub' to me ( in Cornwall) of a certain supermarket is on the outskirts of Bristol. Veg from feilds 10 minutes away goes up there and then back down to my local supermarket, also 10 minutes away! Madness! And dont get me started on fruit and veg from abroad!!

I always make my own coleslaw. Eggs cost a fortune here, as does Mayonnaise, but mayo on sale is the way I roll.
My shopping has changed since my grandson is back as an adult. His eating habits changed and it's been hard to change them back

Hi Karen! Yes, the produce goes bad very quickly! Our farmers market just started, then missed a week due to local fires. They've had no fresh produce! Small town and Wyoming has not had a good growing season. I can get raw milk and yogurt though! 😋

Fruit and veg (unless local) is often rubbish by the time you're ready to eat it.

I freeze buttermilk and milk and use it when I make baked goods that use it. Same for butter. No one can tell me you taste the difference!

I noticed that the garden vegetables that I grow last a real long time. It’s one reason I grow my own now- this difference makes me wonder what they’ve done to the store produce.
I am not a natural gardener, but I finally decided that they must be doing something unnatural to our produce. For example, cut leaves from garden kale lasts two weeks in the fridge. Purchased kale starts turning yellow almost immediately. That’s odd!

It's because of how long the veg has already been in transit and storage before reaching the supermarket shelves.

Pretty much the same due to autoimmune. Do have an allotment though. Mostly to keep fit-ish! I do shove a lot of what I grow in freezer for when kids come. I share food with neighbours.
