When I was growing up we were low income and we thought processed foods were a luxury. Soda, chips, candy, etc were things we couldn’t afford. When did it change to where these things are considered “ cheap” food? It wasn’t like that before. I recall that even canned juice was a luxury.

I think it changed when people decided they didn't have time any more and wanted quick convenient junk. Supermarkets jumped on this as it generates massive income for them. They dress the processed rubbish to look good with a pretty photo on the box, add a few health claims which are mostly dubious anyway, and bingo! Suddenly it became acceptable to stuff your family full of utter garbage to 'save time'. I raised 5 children, whilst working full time, far more important for me to save their health than save a bit of time! It's no wonder there is an epidemic of obesity in youngsters nowadays, and their energy levels are so depleted. Their health issues are going to be a ticking time 💣.

I was a young teenager when TV dinners came out. We thought they were the bees knees. But also years ago, processed foods didn't have all the chemicals in them that they do now. We hadn't developed them yet. We should have left well enough alone. The U.S. (where I am) has such bad processed foods in so many ways, that many other countries won't even allow us to export it to them. We are full of genetically modified foods, hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup, preservatives, antibiotics, stabilizers, emulsifiers, salt, sugar, and the kitchen sink. It's not food, it's chemical stews designed to look like food. As long as it still tastes a bit like what it is supposed to, people will eat it. I have to believe that industrial waste needs a place to go, so they put it in our food. Like fluoride in our toothpaste. Fluoride is a waste product. I'm surprised our food doesn't glow in the dark. And even fresh foods now are coated with APEEL, to prolong shelf life (avocados, citrus).

Yes, you are right. Its very odd. Very odd also how whenever a celebrity chef,or food expert declares something to be a superfood the price suddenly goes through the roof. We,I suspect, are being taken for a ride.

@@caroldaviddaviejohnson2225 I agree. I always buy fresh meat, fresh fish etc. I never buy any frozen meat etc I don’t know where it comes from for a start and, in my opinion, is often of a poor quality, so a false economy for me. I’m lucky I have an excellent butcher and fishmonger here, so I get my meat and fish from the them, it might be more expensive but it’s fresh and of good quality.

I've caught myself eating more and more processed foods over the past year, which I want to stop, for saving money as much as for health. I used to batch cook a lot, so I want to get back into it, cooking meals from scratch and getting them into the freezer. Setting one day a week aside for doing it is a really good idea. I've actually spent this evening listing ingredients that I usually keep in, and planning meals!

You're correct 💯 . . . I'm sitting here in my kitchen with veggies from my container garden in the canner. Made soup, pasta sauce, carrots, corn from the field, pickled beets and vegetable broth. Basically free food with a little bit of work now and already when needed. Eastern Iowa USA

I never buy ready meals of any kind, my entire freezer is full of ingredients for all sorts of food, I always double batch when cooking and add a portion or two in the freezer for later. I work full time and was a single parent for years, I still managed to cook a meal fresh every night. I use my slow cooker as often as possible all year round. People are just lazy and would rather just do the fun stuff or the pampering stuff. Your health is much more important than painting your nails.

You are so right. Last night, I made a simple batter for fish, and did about two dozen fish fingers. They were so good. About 15 are in the freezer now, and today it is just a matter of making some fries, a bit of a salad and we're done.

Some minimally processed foods can be worth it. There’s always a case for ‘something on toast’ (beans, poached egg, cheese etc.) quick to produce and good protein.

You just reminded me of how I used to cook on Sundays and need to start again. It made life so much easier. Here in southern US it gets so hot in summer we would grill outside and make chicken, hot dogs, pork chops, steak when we could afford and then eat all week.

  • @jankarel6454
    @jankarel6454 2 месяца назад +6

At the age I am, time is not the problem, but energy is. The solution is similar, though. I've had to simplify meals to what I can handle. I make a lot of soup and very easy casseroles. Sometimes I even break down cooking into two different days--one day chopping vegetables and getting out all the different spices, and then the next day doing the actual cooking.
Something that has changed from when I was growing up is that we all used to help with the meals. Now it seems like all the kitchen duties fall on the woman of the house, no matter how many people eat the meal. That would really be hard.

I remember vesta meals and fray and Bentos steak pies! They were horrible, so I cook from scratch. Also I have food intolerance, so I have been lucky and cook food from scratch. Once you are organised it is easy and does not take anymore time. I remember as a young mother baking an altogether sponge that took less time than getting the car out and driving to the shops.

Making a couple of scrambled eggs with some cut up carrots and some cherry tomatoes and cucumbers is a meal. Add some Greek yogurt if you need more protein and some toast . It takes less time than reheating stuff. A can of tuna with some salad is a meal. Cheese and crackers and some raw veggies and a salad is a meal. It need not be completed if people have no time.

In the industrial revolution, Fish & chips became the staple for factory workers. Cheap, hot, cooked in beef tallow, nutritious. Now it would be a weeks wages to feed a family fish & chips once a week. The value of our wages has gone down & down too. Butter, bread, fish, cheap cuts of meat are now out of range for many families. The highly processed food seems cheap but it's not filling like protein and animal fats. Eggs are still incredibly good value, and take little cooking, bacon off cuts, butter or lard (not oil) for cooking, etc. Especially good value is Lidls grass fed mince beef, for beef burgers or meat balls or meat loaf or "power bowls" (fried mince beef with scrambled eggs and chopped bacon). Streaky belly pork too, but that takes a bit more cooking so I batch cook it, amd its really filling.

We eat at home most days and live in central Texas high 90 to 100: plus half the year. To keep cooing during the day down I prep things early in the day. If I’m making something that requires simmer in. Or boiling water. Like make spaghetti sauce and cook the past then heat it up in the evening. .

They're also the reason so many people are not as healthy as they could be.
We had bacon, boiled potatoes, carrots, and broccoli for tea today. It took a few minutes to prep, and then I left the pan simmering and put the bacon under the grill when we were ready for it. I understand that not everyone is able to do this, but I'm sure it cost a lot less than 2 ready meals.
I personally think some folks think a meal is ....shepherd's pie, macaroni cheese, spag bol....etc, which take time to cook, then put together in a certain way. Tv chefs have a lot to answer for. Whatever happened to a basic meal of protein, carb and veg on a plate?!

Other times I chop up lettuce and or even cabbage salad coleslaw on top of the meat and bread. Oh building a meatloaf sandwich :-) anything from bread to whatever other goodies are in the fridge. I love a meatloaf sandwich :-) I've also been known to put a couple of hot tablespoons of in between the bread and meatloaf :-) you know cuz :-) I'm home and it's my way :-):-):-):-) yummy. Sometimes I eat two meatloaf sandwiches in a sitting :-)

I disagree with you on the cause - It is our own laziness' that is the cause, it is not "them".
For years we have chosen that easy option and brought the easy microwave meals and the supermarket have picked up on that trend and produced more types of easy processed meals and cut down on the more expensive fresh foods.
It is exactly the same with the self service tills, people loved them as they were a faster way to pay, now more supermarkets are going full self serve tills (and getting rid of staff), people now are moaning about having to queue with their trolley at the self serve till and so are doing more online shopping - can you guess what will be the next step ?
    What supermarket ?????
But I do agree with the batch cooking a weeks worth at a time
