Thanks so much for the kind mention. I’m a big believer in the little savings that all add up.

Hi Karen! I was just listening to Hope and Larry on Under the Median, and they always talk about saving, no matter how small, as it adds up. I agree. I am not a great budgeter, but like you, I know generally what is what, and I save where I can. Now if you asked me several years ago, prior to listening to Jane and Mike on Frugal Queen, I would have laughed. Save? Save what? Save how? I love you RUclipsrs that make it real for the rest of us. It takes awhile, but it is sinking in! 😅😂😂❤

    Keep it simple. MONTHLY
    Pen and paper
    Envelope Method
Pay rent first and foremost ( u need roof over your head)
    Then Bills ( water G/E/CT.
    Food
Spread of what ever is left over 4 weeks. Yes Include include little inexpensive treats.
Also helps if you don't drink or smoke. Non smokers definitely have more money.

Some people need to learn the hard way, and that is ok if you are young, not so much when you are older. I don't budget, I used to, and it was fun to go back and see what we paid for things. But now, the frugal habit has set in, and every now and then, I count my pennies and there are more than the last time that I counted, so I must be doing ok. The only regret that I had was paying $110 for a 50 lb bag of whole wheat grain, organic. That hurt, but had to be done, as the husband fed a bag that I had paid $25 for many years ago, to the chickens. So he had to replace it. The feed store is five minutes' drive from us. Lesson 1-don't be lazy, Lesson 2-don't let your supplies run out, Lesson 3-Don't touch my prepping stash, ha ha.

I figure out what I have normally to pay. I look at the previous couple of months and also how much I spent for that month the previous year. Add a bit more than I paid previously. That is my budget.

I feel that the important thing is to actually manage your money. To be aware. It has been a difficult couple of months here for various emotional reasons. We enjoy eating out. Its our treat. I have blown the 'eating out' line on my budget last month and this. ( severe illness in the family) However, due to previously buying yellow sticker meats and now buying on offer veg only i have really cut our weekly spends on supermarket items down to £13 last week and £10.02 this week ( for 2 adults - one of whom eats a lot due to physical work). Apart from £2.20 for milk, and £5 in the pay by weight shop - i will need nothing untilnext Friday - 8 days away. Even the pbw spends will last for 2 weeks 😊. It is all done by good frugal habits, including eating non- ultra processed foods aa far as possible and cooking from scratch. I hope this helps/ inspires someone- a few years ago I would have thought this impossible!

Hi Karen, I could not agree more with what you said- little things do add up and every person’s situation is different indeed!
Personally, I can’t keep strict (luckily I don’t have to yet) budget because I have two kids… you can’t plan everything ahead - colds, emergencies, school trips, costumes, B-day Parties etc it’s so much easier when you are one person! Nevertheless, pay yourself first rule works always.
    Warmest regards from Cyprus!

Prepping for every reason: My brother failed quickly and so I packed and spent his last 10 days in hospice with him. I had everything prepped : laundry done, food stocked; I had toiletries, extra clothes, healthy snacks and extra foods to grab, and had no fear of leaving those here at home that they would have what they needed.
One of my sons moved back closer to us in this state, and is trying to sell a house 2,000 miles away, then to buy a house out here, so a reduction in rates will make a big difference.

I don't know if this works I the UK, but if you pay half a mortgage payment each fortnight you get and extra month paid each year. That extra payment reduces your principle and takes years off your loan period. I did it and saved 5 yrs of interest paid.

We're not as frugal as you, but for the past year I have tried to keep our food/alcohol at home spending to 400 euros a month. I'm mostly managing this by limiting my visits to the supermarket. Yesterday, for example, I tucked a few coins in my bra and popped into the supermarket at the end of a run. I only needed bread and chocolate biscuits, but if I'd gone in the car you can guarantee I'd have spent over 50 euros. I did add four pastéis de nata to my shop but the bill still only came to 4 euros 25 cents. Wondering if I can hold off until next week ... trouble is my partner does like his 'nibbles'.

No but you can help your self, by planning, budgeting, making cut backs in unnecessary spending.
Something lacking in society is personal financial responsibility, especially for people's spending. For example, I have no money to feed my kids and they're starving, but I've got enough to buy a pack of 20 cigs or 4 cans of alcohol or a bottle of wine because I deserve it. We all know those people..

Karen, do you think if people have been barely coping on the high mortgage interest rates, and now, with them dropping, they are loosening the purse strings rather than saving more. Do you feel saving is important?

    • @lynnoorman2144
      @lynnoorman2144 Месяц назад

If those folk have gotten into frugal habits, so much the better. They can put money away for when the mortgage rates go up again. A bit like the story of the grasshopper and the ant??? Maybe a few treats once, at least, 1 extra month of mortgage payment saved. Intentional spending so that more can be saved.
