      Awesome tips. Thank you. My hair is long but rather thin. I understand that layers give you so many opportunities but I am afraid that it might look to thin with the layers. Maybe I am wrong because it would maybe give me more volume instead in styling. Wow I sure would like to be in this chair and you would cut those layers right
      and do a miracle with my hair. You are great! Thank you so much for these very informative videos.

    This is ME(!), Justin! Oh, my. Can’t wait for every part. For Part 1, I’m sold on layered. At 72, it’s long, because I’m tall and overweight, and short makes me look like a pinhead. Hair - with volume - can and will help balance me out. But at 72 - with really fine hair - it’s like the volume is gone. You know. Thinning... So, Phat Hair will be the ‘thing’, and I can’t wait for Part 3. Plus, layered about the eyes and cheekbones is necessary with my oh-so very high brow. The question(s) become: 1) Can I layer it myself? ... and 2) besides Phat Hair, is there a good place to buy hairpieces (like ponytony?) to pin in at the back top, when it’s pulled back? The challenges are both cutting it myself and for the piece, matching hair texture and white/gray coloring...
    LOVE the walks for your videos! Loved how in the forest shots you have the sunlight dappling the forest floor. I’d be there if I could! The view of the lake was phenomenal...
    Thanks!

      Thank you so much! I’m really so glad I could help. I totally understand where you’re coming from. I’m going to show a lot more of the technical side of cutting in part two which I really think you’ll like. As far as cutting layers at home, you absolutely can! I’ve actually created an entire master class where I teach people how to do their hair at home both cutting and coloring. I also have a free webinar where I tell people how to avoid the common mistakes when doing your hair at home. Have you had a chance to check that out yet? I think you would love it. As for the hairpieces, honestly I don’t work that much with hair pieces so I would need to look a bit deeper into that.However I do want to do a video about them so I am doing some research on that topic.

    I just love that you emphasize recognizing the length that your hair actually supports. I'm older and know this is true for me.
    I love the hikes! It's random but it lends a good bit of earth to this glossy section of the world. I really like how you break down the logic of good shaping. Thanks for doing it!
    Can I be personal for a second?
    I had cancer when I was in kindergarten. I started 1st grade without hair except for super thin wisps here and there. I'm obsessed with keeping long hair because I have it now. When I go for haircuts I know the power of a good strong line and layers because of one good stylist I had once.. The stylists I find lately just don't cut enough. I think it's fear of cutting too much, which I really do appreciate. They don't know my past though. It's just the commitment to "the longest hair possible" mentality that makes it hard for the stylists I think.
    I said I'm older. I'm almost 55. Winter is here. I'm sick of getting knots from wearing scarf. Winter sucks for long hair! Scarves, sweaters, micro fibers, and wool. The back suffers even if it's up. I'm not even sure what I want but I'm thinking medium length might be easier to manage. I'm watching a lot of your videos! Thanks for making them!

    My favorite way to wear my long hair for an occasion is the front part pulled up in a ponytail. It does that volume around the temple thing and the rest of the hair being down seems to help the neck seem longer. Love your videos and the scenery.

    I really appreciate these videos. I had mostly one-length hair grown out on purpose and it was down to my waist. I’m 55, and felt like just having fun. It bothered me in photos though. I am a retired stylist of over 25+ years and still enjoyed learning your technique. It’s perfect! I cut about 4”-5” off and sectioned the back. Layered and cut into the hair in snips. My hair is very naturally curly, and people constantly want to thin it. No! It does not work for me. But, this took the heaviness out while shaping it and gave the bottom the thickness and neatness it needed. Thank you!

Often struggled with hair layered incorrectly in the past, and it makes such a difference to how the hair turns out when it's done right and looks so much healthier and thicker. I’m in the same boat ! My hair is like yours . Im stick straight in front while curly/ wavy at the nape . The top layer in back is straight . So there’s a layer of hair over the curly part that is straight. My hair is thin enough that the wrong layers make my ears stick out too . My hair is 2.5-3 feet long . It’s actually healthy at the bottom cuz I don’t do anything to it . I absolutely crave layered hair because I have had it done right before but I’ve had it done wrong more than I’ve had it done right so it makes me scared. My favorite stylist moved away about five years ago and I’ve not had a layered since cuz I don’t want the shelf look or the scraggly look . I’m a bit lazy about hair cuz I do construction and cleaning. So it’s hard to have cute hair.

    Hi Justin - I have a confession to make...while you know how much I enjoy and have learned from your videos, I do hereby confess that they've now become my weekly escape wherein I vicariously hike with you in my mind since your views far surpass mine in New York City!. I'm curious as to how many hours you allow yourself for your 'hiking escape' and what distance. I decided that the best length for my hair is about an inch below my shoulders. With your tips, I decided that my best length is about an inch below my shoulders with my front layers (bangs?) hitting me at my chin. After having bangs for so many years, I'm hitting a rough spot adjusting to having hair in my face since I wear it down during the day and immediately pull it back into a ponytail or up with a clip once I'm home. So, any tips on how to find a happy medium? Thank you as always for your guidance, suggestions and support. You rock 'Grandpa'!

    • @justinhickox
      @justinhickox  3 года назад

      Thank you so much! I really appreciate that. I’m so happy to hear that I can take you virtually out into a little escape. Are usually hike somewhere in the neighborhood of eight or so miles when I’m filming a video. Nothing super long but I go really early in the morning and try to get back into the woods as far as I can to make sure that I get away from people coming purposes. A video Usually takes me about 3/4 of the day to film because of the hike time and driving time. As for front layers, it’s tough to say to be honest. It may be that having some shorter pieces like a bang might work better for you if it’s all falling in your face. Then when you pull it back just knowing that you’re going to have to maybe use a couple of clips to get some of it back off of your face. It’s kind of a tough in between scenario to be honest.

    • @justinhickox
      @justinhickox  3 года назад +4

      That’s a great question! What I can say is this, a lot of the techniques I’ve seen taught in beauty schools have a tendency to make it easy for stylists to overlay her hair. If they aren’t taught after school how to avoid that, they have a tendency to layer hair a bit too much sometimes and end up making it look thin. With that said, in part two of the series I’m going to explain all of that and you’re going to understand All of that and you’re gonna understand so much more about your hair and how to avoid that specific issue as well as a bunch of others..

I'm scared of layers at the back, I've had so many disasters & now I have a neck injury I can't hold my arms up for very long so I don't know how I'm going to do this but I've still got part 3 to watch but I'm going to need some tips on styling back layers with arms/hands that get painful & numb, I will not give in lol! It's great to be back.👍🙋‍♀️😍💗✨🌈✌👀⁉

    Maybe I'm at the end of the line with my current stylist. Whenever I try to talk about doing something new, she just says, "I need a picture of what you want." I pay her a lot of money, and I think she should know these hair design principles you're speaking of, and be able to give me a cut that's right for me, without a picture.

    Love your "Hair Adventures/Venturing into the Wilderness" 🤭😁😀 LOVE these videos Justin & your personality shines right through as well. Healthy looking hair is a key to style ( where you talked about cutting the length at the strongest growth as opposed to where it looks broken & it's just not looking balanced ) layers have been great for my long hair because I am tall & I have a long neck & a longer face shape. I avoid one length as this basically looks ridiculous on me 😆😂🤣😭 I have a great stylist/colourist & he does many of the things you teach on your channel. I'm very blessed to have such a talented Hairdresser who understands his clients needs & explains what he's doing & why. Great video Justin 👌 look forward to the 2nd part of the "Trilogy" take care 🙋‍♀️

  • @sidhedanu
    @sidhedanu 2 года назад

    I watched Part 2 last night. I am somewhat interested in layering my hair again, as it got REALLY heavy once it got to be around 3 feet long. Once it was long enough for me to wrap 2 pigtail braids around my head for a crown braid effect, my goal, I realized I'm too German (round face) & my hair is too thick - it looked ridiculous. I tried the wolf cut technique and got adequate layers at the bottom to remove some weight, but then my braid was too choppy. I have extremely thick (about 4.5 inch ponytail circumference) hair which is also extremely stubborn. When wet it has a pretty wave pattern, but that mostly falls out by the time it dries (~12 hours...very nonporous). I finally figured out how to bun my hair at 38 - I have to use a hairstick & it HAS to be extra long in order to be able to make a twist and have enough tail to tuck underneath (I usually do a nautilus bun). Still, it would be nice to have it down without it being entirely in my face & having some movement. It won't respond to curling irons & hairspray, so styling that way isn't an option for me. Is it possible for me to have layers that don't make my braid have huge pieces sticking out & allow me to still bun my hair?

  • @JaniceCharters

    I love your channel and have watched all your videos, many more than once. I can't tell you how much I appreciate the knowledge you share. It's wonderful. I'm 68 and will retire soon. When I do, I no longer want to color my hair, because I'll no longer have to compete with the 20 year olds. (Ha! Ha!) I don't have much gray hair yet, but my hair is very dull and it clumps, it just gathers in these clusters at the tips, so I keep it short and I color it. Is there something I can use on my hair to make it shine and keep it from clumping? Am I asking for too much? I'd love to see a video on dull hair that clumps. Hopefully, I'm not the only one who can benefit from this information. I've watched videos on glazing and am wondering if that's an alternative. Thanks for all you do. You're such a darling!

      Hey! Thank you Joanne. I appreciate that. I would go the opposite way a bit. If your hair is thick and wavy, layering it can be one of the best ways to remove volume. I'm 61 and have long hair. I have a long layered cut, except my hairdresser cut the top layer of my hair too short. I wear my hair pulled back and the top layers pop out. I didn't want that. I have a lot of hair, about 50/50 gray and sandy blonde which is grown out highlights. I haven't had my hair cut or trimmed since December 2019. At this time, I don't "want a new look"...I am content for the moment. I do curl and style my hair, and it is not dry or scraggly. I condition, wash twice to three times a week, and use little heat. My hair is fine, dense, heavy but has natural body. Layers DO give shape and movement, just don't want that top short layer. I am afraid to go back to him. He highlights hair just fine..

Even when I rinse my hair I switch the temperature of water from warm to cold to shock the roots or stir them up to grow .... NO results. • @justinhickox
      @justinhickox  3 года назад +1

      Hey Teresa! That’s a great question. I think the hardest part is that there are SO many factors. A broad answer would be....I would pay attention to ALL of these things equally.
      1. Scalp condition (making sure you’re taking care of your scalp, stimulating blood circulation etc)
      2. Nutrition over vitamins. Vitamins play a key roll in hair health but the best versions of vitamins will be through Whole Foods.
      3. Stress. Hair grows from the roots not the ends so taking care of our body is a big deal for hair health. Healthy hair grows longer than unhealthy hair.
      4. Physical stress on your hair. Pay attention to how damaging your day to day process is and minimize the damage where possible.
      5. Texture. Some textures grow to a certain length and it’s nearly impossible to get them longer than that.
      6. Olaplex. The best way to reduce breakage is to rebuild disulfide bonds in your hair. Olaplex is the ONLY product that has the ability to do that currently. #3 is the one that does this.

    Are you still seeing clients? If so, what is the best way to request an appointment? I have requested one through the website but haven't received a response. Thanks

      Hey! Thanks for reaching out. I sent you a message, but usually calling the salon is the easiest way to get an appointment. Looking forward to seeing you.

    Love ❤️ your advice, I totally agree. Looks like you’re in Washington I think 🤔. I am a hair stylist in the neighboring state of Oregon.
