This video is episode 4 in a series where I'm randomly selecting one of the subscribers that submitted their photos and using them as a model. I use photos they send in to explain mistakes that are being made with their hair now and showing examples of styles they could wear that could help them create an even more youthful edge. In this episode we talk about how a little bit of length can play a huge roll in how youthful your hair looks and how layering plays a massive role in how youthful your hair makes you look. We also hit on styling tips that will help give a more complimentary look as well as how small shifts in color can give grey hair a more youthful feel with much more drama and movement. Many times if you want to look more youthful, it just takes small changes to create a large impact!

@JustinHickox what are your thoughts on the “calligraphy “ hair cutting technique?
I prefer the shorter version of what she has and minor color changes as it appears to be the least maintenance. Thanks for giving us these hair options.
Thank you!!! Love this!
Going really short can sometimes work against you in upkeep, but I do like removing a few inches on the bottom and bringing in some height..well done video
@justinhickox not gonna lie, when you moved to do the sponsored part of the video, I thought you were on the toilet and I gasped lol. I love how you are gentle with your criticisms and teach us so much at the same time. Love this series!
Amanda has some great hair. The first look of simply shortening and layering makes a world of difference for little effort.
That’s my take as well. I like the small changes for her even more than the curveballs.
Totally agree!
Agreed! And taking the yellowing out made a big difference too!
Layering just thinned my hair out. I'm 67 with naturally wavy hair, and I've gone au naturel with long hippy hair. I love the way I look now.
I like the first ,medium length layered look on her much better than the shorter ones. I love learning from your videos. Thank you
I love this series. A doctor wouldn't feel uncomfortable diagnosing a health issue. You shouldn't feel uneasy about offering your professional opinion on hair - especially when asked. You're always polite and have a great "chairside" manner. Wishing you and your wife a great vaca. It looks like a beautiful spot.
What a beautiful lady! My preference is to keep her current style, but a bit shorter as you showed Justin. Maybe add some darkness near the roots...? I really appreciate this because I also grew my natural color out over the past couple of years. So thank you both!!!
This is great. I love listening to the terminology. I always feel useless when trying to describe what I want when getting my hair cut. Just being me, I like her hair with the first few correlations, it make a hugh difference, very smart. Great video. Thank you very much. And enjoy your time away!!!
I agree! I think the slight modifications are perfect for her!
Awesome Kelly! So glad I could help with that for ya!
Like the Bob but don't like very short hair on older women to harsh
The options you gave are phenomenal! She can't go wrong with any of your suggestions.
What were you worried about? This is great.
Good work.
Thank you Janice. I’m a bit of a perfectionist. I always appreciate the kind words!
All great options I really like the shorter version, she looks great!!
That’s amazing how a few small changes made such a positive difference! Love this series!
It’s crazy right!!
Because of Amanda's rectangular/angular face shape, I really like the curves of her original style, which soften the look. I think she looks amazing to start with!
I totally agree!
Yup. I didn't like the changes. The short styles looked really good on the girls but the one showed on her didn't look that good. And I don't think the extra volume he did on top on the longer ones did her good either, it just made her look more masculine. So I like her before pictures best. She looked good already, didn't need any changes really.
I totally agree Debbie. This is one of the times I wanted to show different options but I lean towards the small changes as well.
I agree
Yup. She is stunning in the first photo
Not the straight option: far too harsh. I didn’t feel the short cut did much for her either. Definitely preferred the small tweaks at the start of the video. She has lovely hair.
If I'm ever in your area, I will pay you a visit. You're an artist, and have a gift for knowing what color/style will best enhance our skin coloring and facial features.
Enjoy your videos and beautiful scenery!
It would be an honor. Thank you! I appreciate that!
LOVE LOVE LOVE the short chic choice!!!!! If I were her, however, I don't have the skill to recreate the short style!!! The other style looked better than the original, but really elongated her face with the strong lines.
I like the bob and the short style, but I think I prefer the modified version of her original style. Enjoy your fab vacation!
Thank you! I agree with you. Little changes, large impact.
I love the short, edgy cut with her bone structure.
LOVE her natural color. I think she'd look stunning in a layered bob.... sharp & clean defined line @ the bottom. Layered from the mid section down for lift. She's a stunning woman !
I agree. It would be a totally different look than her wavy style but I think that’s part of what could be cool about it. AND, the added bonus that it could still be styled wavy for a bit more softness.
I hate bobs full stop
Thanks Amanda for putting yourself out there and thanks Justin for three great options. My favorite is the slightly shorter, wavy look with the brighter gray. I’m thinking something like that might work for me.
Your kindness just oozes out in your presentation which makes this so organically refreshing to watch!! And of course... your amazing talent... whew... you are ... the perfect package... with all boxes checked!! I love what u did and suggested to this beautiful model!! Jealously is setting in... as I can only be so grateful as to experience your expertise from afar!! Thank you again for another amazing video and please... enjoy your tropical adventure!!
Wow, those subtle changes really made a difference to me!! I especially like the color correction, brightening the yellow and adding lowlights. Great job!!! Now go enjoy that gorgeous location!!
Thank you! I agree about the color. Crazy how much those subtle differences change things right!
I love the shorter length with her same style and whitening the grey out. That is so subtle but makes a huge difference! Once again, you've totally nailed how small changes make a huge difference.
Like the first option keeping the length & more layering
I totally agree!
I would have dyed it blonde
I think short hair makes her look a little masculine, but the version before that is great.
her facial structure is so strong; I agree.
I totally hear ya here. The tough part is the photoshop job. It’s really tough to get an idea of what would look like on her. In my photo it’s a bit strong but I think I’m real life it would be a lot softer than it may seem. I don’t think I did the idea Justice with how I showed it.
@@justinhickox I just think square face plus short hair is a little strong because the models had slightly rounder faces but amazing job and thanks for doing the videos, Justin! Love the nature too.
@@justinhickox Oh my. That very first short option at the beginning looked like the current Tyne Daly haircut. Rather harsh. I don’t think it looks good on Tyne Daly, either, tbh. The later in the video Sharon Gless cut doesn’t look very good, as well.
The long bob emphasizes where she’s starting to get sagging/jowls around the mouth, not her eyes. Not a good look.
Totally agree
I like your first suggestion of bringing up the length and adding more color dimension. I also like how she already added waves to give a feminine touch, enhancing her bone structure. Beautiful!
You are so darn kind to keep these posts rolling even when you are on vacation. Your insights and explanations are always so helpful. I like cut #2 on Amanda. It's sophisticated and pops her pretty cheeks and eyes.
I liked the slightly shorter, fuller version you offered first and the slight change in tone that takes out the yellowish shade. That I think is the most flattering to her face shape. As always, love your videos! Have a great vacation!
Amanda looks great in all looks. My favorite was the first look with slight modifications. She has a great face so she can pull them all off. Love the tips and videos!
The first suggestion you offered that consists of small tweaks in her length and angling is my fave for this lovely lady. Close second is the bob; it is a stunning option if she really wants to change things up with something quite different from her current style, yet is so easy to grow out of she chooses.
I like your first choice with her hair . Volumizing the top and tweaking her color . Love her cut and color like that . Lovely!
Amanda is beautiful! I like all of the options you mentioned. The shortest one looks very dramatic and would make quite a statement. I think it looks fun and youthful!
You don’t have to make excuses to anyone. I think you’re right . As a colored person , I love beautiful shoes and a youthful bob. Hate the square bobs I see some folks wearing and the wrong colors for their complexion. First time seeing your show and I’m thankful. God bless.
This is crazy...You are definitely blessed to see beyond what's in front of you! Everything u pick looks good.
Wow Melissa, thank you so much for that! You’re too kind!
Amanda is STUNNING! I love that she's "embraced" her grey. Justin, your constructive critique and suggestions are so thoughtful and well spoken, not to mention spot on (as always)! My favorite style, is #1. The small tweaks you made to her current hairstyle really have big impact! Enjoy your time away with your bride!
Thank you model for doing this! Thank you Justin for being so creative and seeing the model and hair and offering options. I wish i could find a stylist with imagination and skill to help guide me. I am 58 and stuck in my hair style rut. Scared to make a change. Keep these coming they are so helpful.
Another bob! The quintessential old lady haircut. As far as the dinginess of the gray goes, why not use a purple shampoo to correct it?
Like the longer option best. Also like the lighter whiter highlights getting rid of yellows..dramatic & so lovely.
Love these videos, they`re so helpful :) The small changes, the length and getting rid of the yellow made a huge difference...amazing!
It’s crazy right! So glad you’re liking these videos! Thanks for that feedback!
Gee I enjoy these videos. I love seeing 'normal' women. It's a pity that more hairdressers don't spend the extra 8-10 minutes you took to go into this kind of detail. Thank you very much for what you do. :)
Awesome. I too have stopped coloring and now have the gray/sliver/whatever color hair. Basically a gray Marsha Brady. Your tips were phenomenal. I think cutting it shorter in the front and then adding the highlights of white were spot on. The white really brightened everything up for her. Thanks Amanda.....you're fabulous.
Thank you! And from the small profile pic I can see if you, you’re color looks amazing!!
It is me and mother nature....LOL
@@veronicaj830 you both are doing well together. 👍
@@justinhickox Thanks...coming from you that really means a lot and boost the self esteem.
First things first...Amanda you are beautiful! I love the shortest look but more length on top than what you showed on Amanda (like the insert pics you showed with cut). If that's too short then I like the subtle changes you made to her current style...I didn't care for the Bob one. Thanks for doing this on vacation! Enjoy yourself
Thankyou Justin 😊
I liked the changes you made in the beginning of the video, giving height at the top and slightly shortening the length and angling the side view, enhanced your models naturally attractive face, drawing the eye up, accentuating her bone structure. This style was still feminine and she could wear it up, to give a different look, without cutting it short. Great video 😊You two, enjoy your holiday 🍾🥂🏖
First off, Amanda is beautiful!!!… bone structure is gorgeous!..I love her natural hair color, too!!!
I like her original style the best but I love the subtle color change!
Really like the shorter styles + the dark color you added. Also liked how you brightened the “stain”. I think my favorite style is the short hair that is tousled … so longHope you and your wife have a great vacation at that beautiful place!
Love the subtle changes to her existing look.
This was great! And once I saw Amanda with the short hair I was wowed!!😲 This cut looks amazing on her!! Lifts her face and gives an edgy youthful vibe to her beautiful face.❤️
I love your suggestions for the most part. The only thing that I’d say is that for the majority of us who let our natural color shine, we do it because of not wanting to spend a ton of time at a salon, spend money that is not necessary and to smash the stereotypes of aging. Literally to just “be ourselves.” Suggesting low-lights and toning puts us right back into the salon chair which is what we’re trying to avoid other than a beautiful cut. There are excellent shampoos and conditioners out there now for gray hair that can be used at home that address the issues you mentioned. Specifically one with a blue base (for brunettes). That accentuates the pepper, tones down the color that is left, and brightens the whites. I’m sure you know all this, but thought I’d share from a woman’s perspective in why many of us make this transition.
I totally get where you’re coming from. And I absolutely agree with that mindset and understanding of why women tend to go gray. I have talked about this a lot and other videos and I love women taking that confidence and loving what they have naturally. The idea of doing low lights in natural gray hair is actually far less maintenance than one may think. I have multiple clients that I do it on specifically for that reason. You add the low lights in once every five or six months depending on the length of hair. Sometimes even less. As for the blue and purple shampoos, you’re correct, they are definitely out there and in some cases they can work. However many times they’re not strong enough to cut the tone of yellow that people are dealing with. Sometimes something a little stronger, like a toner, is necessary to get that look. I have toners I recommend, use and love, that you can buy on Amazon and do at home. And with all that said, I totally understand where you’re coming from and this brings up a good perspective I should probably share in a future video. Thanks for sharing that insight.
@@justinhickox Thank you for your response! I understand exactly what you’re saying. I do know a few people who can’t get rid of that stubborn yellow who do need some professional assistance. Of course I agree that lowlights can certainly enhance the dimension of color and provide some depth and shadows not found in the natural gray. More power to the folks who choose that and what works for them! Just wanted to share a perspective from someone who stopped coloring at 55 and now enjoys a bit more freedom. I still go to the salon for regular trims. ☺️ I do love these videos and all of the information you share. I would love to know what safe, at-home toners you recommend for women who have gone gray. Such a breath of fresh air…especially taking your videos “on the road.” You have some beautiful scenic backdrops! Have a wonderful day!
Agree. I would be annoyed with any hair stylist who knew I had spent so much time going natural and didn’t want to color my hair to suggest my natural color isn’t “enough” - even if they consider the coloring as “low maintenance” … gray is not bad. Not even “yellow” gray.
@@justinhickox Plantar 39 Silver, shampoo and conditioner, are, in my opinion, really good options on grey hair. I get lots of compliments on mine.
I like the modified version but with a bit more of the silver/gray highlighting to brighten her hair up a bit more. 😊
I love the color of Amanda’s hair but those subtle changes you made really make it pop. I’m struggling with growing out my hair after chemo last year. It’s now a completely different texture and all gray. Seeing your suggestions for Amanda gives me ideas for my own color. Thanks for all your great suggestions and videos. I always learn a lot from you.
Love Justin’s tips
Thank you Janet! I always appreciate your support!
I like the first one that was a little shorter. I need to send my picture in for an updated look! Good job! Have fun on vacation...
Amanda has gorgeous hair to begin with - great job of growing out to gray! I LOVE what you did with the layering and the white, but I like her original cut (with your tweaks) much better than either short cut. 💕
The professional’s eye with limited alterations can really take a look up multiple levels. Loved the short look!
Love how the little changes make a big difference!! I really like it!
Thank you for sharing your pictures...beautiful lady!
Thank you! So glad you liked it! And yeah, it’s crazy how much those little changes can impact things right!
I would do the first version…. Great video, Justin!..,enjoy the rest of your vacay!💜💜💜💜💜
What’s up Linda!! Great to see ya again! Thanks , vacation was great! Just got home on Tuesday night. Now back to work…or something like that! Lmao!
@@justinhickox 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Love her original style with the shorter back, beveled and the color you put in the first go. I gotta get the back of mine shorter and beveled too. What a difference!
She's beautiful. I love the suggestions. I was thinking about the low lights before you mentioned it. Toner, yes.
I also think the shorter cut (#2), looks awesome. Adding to it, a shorter "spikey" cut right at the crown,,, to give more height there, might look awesome too. Then lastly, an overall gloss.
Great job Justin. What a beautiful vacation spot. Enjoy every bit of it. Ps...take a break 😊
Thank you Carol. I totally agree. We definitely had a great time. On the flight home right now. It was a great moment to relax for a few and a needed break. At least the small time I actually relaxed! Lol.
I loved the angled bob with the added color dimension. To me she looked younger AND her cheek bones just stood out . The short cut, in my opinion, drew her face down, and added age. Bottomline: She is beautiful in any style or color she chooses!
The first slight difference, I already see the lift!..fabulous!
I love your humility, very refreshing. I am quite sure you are far happier for it. I like the original hairstyle with the changes. I feel like perfectly straight hair can make older people look older. Many blessings for the new year. 😘
Thank you for the excellent suggestions. I am 21 months into growing out the balayage coloring that I always received so many compliments on. But chasing the grey’s finally got the best of me and Covid gave me the opportunity. Like Amanda I prefer low maintenance longer hair but that along with my now natural hair coloring has made me question how to retain a feminine low maintenance flattering hairstyle.
I prefer the longer cut with added layers on Amanda and liked the added lowlights for dimension.
I’m loving the Bob hair cut on her looks sophisticated!!!!
The outcome of the slightly shorter cut with more layers showed me something I would not have seen before. I appreciate your strategy, and I feel it elevates the overall appearance of the style. The shortcut is incredible, and to me, whichever type selected would also match the personality and lifestyle of the wearer. Also, your color suggestions would breathe more life and drama.
Love the straight option ! beautiful and striking and clean
Justin, your descriptions are so spot on!!!!! Gonna finish out watching to see if anything applies to ME!!!
I really liked the short hair option on Amanda. I said, “Wow” when I saw this photoshopped on her. I think it really flatters her beautiful face shape, eyes, and cheekbones.
I hit the thumbs up before i even started watching. Then you started talking and the sound is so good!
Awesome! I love these. I like the first final one with the dimensional color. One problem I noticed was that on the 2nd and 3rd shorter options her expression is different.
That laugh after you said. "You're welcome"... ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐💈✂💈
Hahaha! I’m a sarcasm ninja. Lol!
@@justinhickox Oh, yes.... You are 😉
Loved you first suggestion the most! It’s amazing how such a small change makes such a big difference! I think she could rock the shortest look also as long as she had some good wave or movement to it! Amazing work as always!
No to other versions... she’s gorgeous and the first suggestion was youthful and classy... can’t do better than that!
Love, love, LOVE, how you are showing different options for her! It is very helpful to see a low, med., and high maintenance hairstyle. Always great content.
I hope yall had a fantastic time in the DR
The suggestions are all great for her- she looks good now and will look great with some of these suggestions if sh,e does them.
What a great series!
I liked the layered look on her and I thought the low lights, or whatever you call them, looked really good on her. I didn’t care for the short hair style. I’m not a fan of short hair but I thought that was a little bit too short. I love these videos the third you’re doing. It’s so interesting to hear your thought processes and learn from you. 👍🏼 Thanks. 😊
Love the second curveball option. Of course, she’s so pretty, anything will look good on her. I agree with all of your suggestions!
I absolutely love that much shorter choppy look. She has amazing bone structure and the shorter hair complements it beautifully.
PS nice hotel. Did I miss the name of it? Have a great time!
Amanda is beautiful! I love her original waves, with the light parts brightened, and maybe a little taken from the length. (Of course, we always want what we don't have, and I have stick straight hair!)
Oh wow, just a little change but what a huge difference it made.
Excellent advice that I can use TODAY! Thank you!
So subtle but I agree looks wonderful 😊
Yes, I love everything you changed to her haircut/ style. (The 1st one) Maybe add a gloss too?
I'm so glad you tried the short style because that was my first thought when I saw her beautiful cheekbones! She's gorgeous anyway, so no matter what she does, she'll look great!
Hi Justin. Love the video..I think the bob is beautiful. Makes a huge difference..enjoy your vacation and as always thanks for the Phenomenal scenery!! 🤗 hugs
Definitely like the shortest style on her! Super cool, youthful and edgy!
Hi! I have become totally obsessed with your videos 😵💫. My hairdresser here in my little town in Brittany retired in 2017 and I didn’t get around to finding another (to be honest I’d always relied on Tony & Guy in London and on Jersey in the Channel Islands ~ U.K.). I so miss my darling Tony & Guy coiffeur ~ you remind me a lot of him in your expertise and approach. Still .. back to my point …. I live in France and I have booked myself an appointment with a coiffeur just recommended to me (Arnaud Lidove) with a great reputation in Pont Aven tomorrow morning …. I have scoured your fantastic videos and I’ve just found this one ~ EUREKA 👍. The way you approached Amanda’s gorgeous hair lit a lightbulb in my head and now I will be able to explain what I feel I’d really like ~ leaving it to Arnaud of course to use his expertise. Thank you sooooo much 🙏❤️🙏
Hey Justin. You are spot on about adding darker roots. She looks so much better with the darker roots but if you go gray you do not want any upkeep by adding color. I did not like the bob cut on her, it seems like a dated haircut. The short haircut was a good option but it was too spikey, it was not waves that she needs to soften her look. It was another excellent video. I like when you give different hairstyle options.
Amanda is a natural beauty. I like the subtle changes you made first with the cut and then the tone changes. If she is just “over” the whole coloring thing, the first changes are super without tone changes. Although her face is still beautiful with all the styles, I do like some length and waves best. Well done!
Hi! Thank You to share more videos like this! Amanda is a good example for many Women that are let growing our grays hair today ! I like the both short cut suggested but my personal opinion the roots darker look very nicely but is very hard to maintaining because for me the gray hair will be showing in less than two weeks! So that is the hard point for me!
Absolutely agree! The color changes are definitely more maintenance when it comes to the darker roots.
I'm a big fan of the short style for her. Amanda has a great face and the short styles show it off much more and take her bone structure from ok to fabulous!
The spiked short cuts look best on youthful smooth skin, straight edge jawbones & a firm tight neck. I like your other ideas with modifying the longer style & taking the yellow out.
Love the short rocker look on her, beautiful lady.
I don't see a lot of different between 1 and 2 but maybe just some styling to add more volume to the top and fixing the color a bit, I think she looks amazing. I'm growing my gray out too so big love to hear for going through this process!
I like the bob and the short style. I like how you punched up the color and add some dimension. In both she now has a definite style as opposed to the hair just hanging around her face.
I absolutely love your first suggestion for her ❣ 6:52
Nice! Thank you!
Short, short, short!!!!
I think 1.: Amanda is a beautiful woman, 2. the bob shape looks good, but 3. the short cut is THE best suggestion.
Go for it, Amanda 🤩.
Hope your vacation was fun, Justin?!
Greetings Sabine 😘
Another Great video! Amanda is beautiful and any of your suggestions will look amazing on her.
Thank you Corinne! And I totally agree.
I liked the first small adjustment when you took off a few inches. Maybe even a shorter Bob, but the wavy roundness was flattering. The short cut is fantastic, definitely brings her face up, but not as soft - dependent on her personality…. Thanks fir featuring women my age with natural silver hair! Adding the high and lowlights just seems too contrived and time consuming. Natural color is so much easier.
Really like both your suggestions especially the straight with the added depth of color
Another great video! So glad to see someone with gray hair like myself.
Thank you Cheri. I appreciate that a ton!
She is beautiful as is. I love your suggestions for her as well.
I can’t argue with you there Jeanie!
Just an observation... your videos....they don't suck! Love them!
Just another observation….you’re awesome! 🙏
I just recently found you channel and I am loving all of your tips. I wish you were closer because I would definitely be having you work your magic on my hair.
i love what you did with the colour
