One of my pet peeves regarding hair stylists is, once they have cut and styled your hair, they turn you out of the chair without any instruction on how to style at home.
So, naturally, I go online and find you...someone who is more than happy to put in the extra hours creating content so clients of OTHER stylists can learn how to style the cut.
I appreciate you and Dionne for all of the extra hours you put into to these videos. It must be like having two full time jobs!

This is the best point - that people come out of the salon after a cut-and-style with this "great" look only to not be able to re-create it at home! What is the point??? There is FAR more value in getting taught how to make your hairstyle great everyday than to just go in and get a bob and wave good-bye and have it fail the very next time you wash and style it! I'd pay more for that kind of service - I don't get it at my salon, sadly, but this video of yours has given me so many tips, I'm so grateful! (I'll also caveat that by saying I've never asked for good tips, either, so there's that...) Also, I agree that it really does help to have this kind of info when working with my stylist. So kudos to you! Those folks who think you're hurting the industry and spilling "secrets" need to take a good look at their own fears and deal with those instead of lashing out at helpful folks like you. ;) I'm going to re-watch this and take notes now for tomorrow morning when I style my own new bob. :D

As a hairstylist for over 40 years I think it’s 100% our job to educate our clients in how to style their hair properly! In my area ( rural small town ) a lot of women don’t want to bother but the ones that do need to know and often ask what do I use and how do I make it look how I do! It’s our livelihood walking around out there and if they get compliments right there is a referral to you and hopefully a long time client. A huge thanks to excellent professionals like you both who are more concerned about their clients so that they are happy with their cut and keep coming back, rather than being frustrated by not being able to replicate the fresh-from-the-salon look. I have dumped many a stylist because I couldn’t make my hair look like they did. I, as many women, have walked out of a salon frustrated with not knowing what to do at home to get the look I want. A stylist has limited time while I’m in the chair, that time is consumed with whatever they are doing that day. There’s little time, if any, for them to have me style my own hair while in their chair. Bottom line if my hair looks good and someone comes up to me and asks who cuts my hair then I’m promoting the stylist. I'm surprised by the comment posted by that hairstylist. Now, I can't speak for everyone, but for myself, your videos made me realize that I wasn't thrilled with my hairstylist or my hairstyle. I thought I was communicating what I wanted, but every time I left, I wanted to cry. She was a wonderful person, but I just wasn't equipped with the right communication tools to express myself and so she kept giving me the same haircut. Finally, during covid, I called a different hair salon. I won't lie, I was scared. Hairstylists can be very intimidating. But they were so kind! The stylist asked me a lot of questions (no one else had ever done that)! Thanks to your videos, I was able to tell and then show her some ideas that I liked. She was so nice. She respected my wishes about keeping a certain length and since my grey was showing, and the ends were turning redish, she came up with a solution to save me from having to get color every 6 weeks. Anyway, recently, you had a video where you talked about texturizing. I went last week and asked her about maybe shortening my hair, adding bangs (I had pictures), and texturizing. She lit up! She said she could do a little or a lot depending on how I liked it! I'm already talking too much, but I ended up telling her to go for it since I trust her now! But I got ALL of my ideas and my nerve to speak up from watching your videos and taking notes! This last haircut is amazing! I love it! I was dancing when I left the salon and couldn't wait to show it off! So please, don't stop doing what you do! Goodness! Where will I get my ideas for my next style?😂❤❤❤

As a cosmetologist myself over 30 years, I appreciate the opportunity always for continuing education that you and some of the other professionals provide in your content. I have picked up a few helpful tips along the way. As far as it hurting the industry, 1, not a lot of people attempt to do their own hair cuts at home ( at least ones I know) and 2., a lot of what I learned in hair school was for the license exam. The really useful practical experience I got was on the salon floor after I finished school.

My hairdresser has asked me to send videos like yours before my appointment. She told me videos like yours help her to improve her technique when cutting hair. Because she already has training, she is able to implement your techniques and get a great cut. It’s also great to watch how you instruct the client how to style at home. My hairdresser does take time to show me how to style at home, but with her limited time, she can’t take 20 minutes to do step-by-step instructions. I’ve watched several of your videos and find them very helpful to learn to style at home.
I think most women (at least) would love to be able to share one of your videos with their hairstylist instead of trying to explain exactly what they want and coming out of their appointment frustrated that they didn’t get the cut they wanted because of miscommunication. I know my stylist greatly appreciated when I shared a video with her on how I wanted my hair cut😊

I feel that educating your client makes them a better communicator. They go home and work with the knowledge you have given. When they come back for a trim, a major cut or color , they can say what worked and what doesn't. I also believe that by educating, the client is willing to take more risks when trusting the stylist. I have naturally curly hair and did not have any idea how to work with it until I was 43. I had been to very expensive stylists over the years in NYC and would leave loving the doo but hated when I couldn't replicate it. It's one of the reasons we jump from one stylist to the next. Communication is key! Thank you for what you share.

As for the comments from the hairstylist......they are forgetting that we fix our hair 99.9% of the time at home. Of course we need to know how to style our own hair correctly. The more educated we are at taking care of our own hair the healthier it will be. Isn't that the goal? We will always go to our hairdressers for haircuts. I LOVE that you get technical! It shows us non-stylists the "why and how-to" so much better than just a video showing how a pro like you can get the right look 👍 Admittedly as a DIYer for my very fine/thin hair, I've learned SO much from watching your videos... I've yet to find a stylist who truly has given me a good cut/style. They 'say' they can work with my hair type and then I walk out with a horrible cut for hair that grows so slowly I'm relegated to hat-wearing! Ugh! YES yes yes! Keep doing your videos with all that info. I think it's the cosmetologists who are insecure who dislike you giving away "trade secrets" IMO. And P.S. I love your sense of humor! 🥰

I also believe that that is a large part of the reason they are so successful. What seemed crazy to me was that a cosmetology instructor could say that I’m being unethical by teaching clients why we do what we do so that they can get better results. To me it’s unethical to hide things from your client That could impede them from getting the best results.

lmaoooo. I watch SO many technical hair videos on RUclips but I still go back to my hair stylist when I want a cut or bleach. I've mastered my semi-perm colour at home and my stylist encourages me to do it. She knows it's costly to come to her for it since semi-perm fades out so quick and I'm dedicated to keeping it bright. She says she loves it because I take such good care of it so it helps her work last longer out in the world too. Teaching people how on RUclips is not as demonic as this person is making it out to be. I still do and always will go back to my stylist. Videos like this just help in between when I don't want to bug my stylist but also want to learn a new way to style my hair or "troubleshoot" a problem I'm having with it.

@@justinhickox I don’t even have a bob; I have hair down to my waist but been thinking about cutting it. This gave me an idea of what I’d be in for with shorter hair. Helped me to make the decision that a bob is too short for me, so thank you!!! At least I can show up to my stylist with a decision and direction in my head now. Your videos help clients make confident choices.

Sounds like some insecurity with the commenter. Your instruction has taught me what to discuss with my stylist. She always listens and appreciates - knowing I will be a happy client. Knowing what and how to communicate is key. Please keep your format.

I personally am infatuated with hair and have been since I was 14 years old, I'm now 53.
I have always coloured my own hair, trimmed it and also cut my family's hair, not always very well I might add but I love to give it a go.
I'm not trained in any way to do hairdressing and do not wish to have a career in hairdressing, however I will never stop experimenting with cutting and colouring hair. So, it's people like you that I am truly very grateful for ♥️.
The reality is that there will always be people like me who like to do their own hair or others hair, without needing a diploma to do so.
The Tips and tricks that you provide are priceless and provide us with a better understanding of the World of Hair.
Thank you so much for your wonderful videos.
The hairdresser who commented negatively perhaps has a lack of confidence in their own skills and therefore feels a little threatened, they may not be as good as they wish to be?
I believe that professional hairdressers will never be out of business if they are good enough and don't overcharge.
Please keep doing what you are doing and listen to the majority of comments as they are the true voice ✂️✂️✂️

You are not off base at all and I’m afraid this is probably a beautician who doesn’t listen to her clients. I run into this a lot, and I've gone through a lot of hairstylist because they will not communicate with me. You show a picture. Tell them what you want in detail. They shake their head with no discussion about your hair type and lifestyle and then do what they want. One of the main reasons I watch your videos to get more education so that I can talk to the beautician and we are on the same page. I'm not trying to tell the beautician how to do their job which some of them interpret it as that. Believe me at 60 with thinning gray hair it has been very hard to find a beautician who will work with me

Thank you! And this is exactly why I create videos! I’ve always thought, it’s not about telling hairstylists what to do, it’s about explaining to clients why we do what we do and how we do what we do so that you can get better results with your hair. It seemed so crazy to me to hear a cosmetology instructor tell me I was not being ethical by Teaching clients what we do.

Justin, are you kidding me?! Just because you share some of your hard-earned expertise with us, does not mean we will stop going to our hairdresser. That doesn't even make sense. For one thing, it doesn't mean that we can even duplicate what you explain-on ourselves. Some hairdressers go to other hairdressers because they can't even do their own hair (as for the majority of us). And, women love to go out and do something fun for themselves once in a while to help us feel special. Going to our hairdresser is just like going to a spa, it helps fulfill that feeling. I, for one, am so grateful for people like you who lend their wonderfully helpful knowledge to help others! Isn't this what YouTubing is for? So, kudos to you, Justin, and I hope you become very wealthy doing this, you deserve it! You do a terrific job creating and delivering your videos. And, in my opinion, you need to ignore these negative Nellie's! This is just my opinion.

the cosmetologist that doesn't like you teaching us is being short sighted and self centered. I cannot go to a hairdresser every week to do my hair so It's good to be able to do it at home. Chef's teach us how to cook because we cannot go to a restaurant every night. jeesh

I have never taken a class and don’t do it for a living, HOWEVER, I love your videos. I think sharing your knowledge on youtube does not take away from my every 4-5 week appointment with my stylist, but gives me tips on how to make my morning get ready time for work easier. Yes, we all wish we had a daily hair stylist and make up crew but the reality is we need you so we don’t all go GI Jane. I would say that my hair stylist would probably not think you were taking away her clientele as I have been with her for 3 years and plan to stay. 😊

Your input and visuals outside of the salon chair is why I watch. I want to see what and how you do what you do from outside the box. What to do and what not to do is a great example of communicating with your clients and members of your chanel. I love it.

I just had my long hair cut into a bob and with all this recent humidity it has been a nightmare! I am extremely grateful to you for sharing all of these tips as it has been a hair saver for me ❤. To be honest, I have never had a hair stylist take the time to show me how to care for my style when at home so I am thankful to you for sharing this with us 😊

This video was exactly what I needed to communicate successfully with my stylist and to replicate the same results at home as when leaving the salon. I think you are doing a service to both client and stylist so both reap the rewards, the client satisfaction in getting what we pay for and the stylist in loyal, appreciative clientele. I thank you and so should the "industry"!

I just discovered your channel and have to say "thank you!" You've taught me more about how to style my bob and what I'm doing wrong in two videos than in a year with the stylist. She does a great cut, but it never looks as good as when she does it, but I had no idea why. I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos.

I shared your video with my hairdresser. I had 100% confidence that she could do the cut but significantly less confidence that i had the vocabulary to tell her stuff I didn’t even know that I needed to know. Your video gave me the vocabulary and she gave me the cut that i am extremely happy with. Your videos and information is great. Thank you.

Honestly, my stylist can cut it fine but wouldn’t be able to show me how to style it. So I’m grateful for your instructions! Thanks!

Just found your videos - this is the second one on how to style a bob. LOVE the instruction and after too many years of not knowing how to get that salon look you have provided much needed insight. Dried my hair today by following the how-tos in this video and the outcome was everything and more! I have natural wavy hair and if I'm going for a straight bob I need to really watch the back - lots of curl that likes to show up later. I have to work more on getting this to behave but overall I am very excited to get these tips and keep practicing. No way would, or should, stylists feel anything negative...you are helping them by teaching their clients how to look great between appointments. My stylist is very busy and doesn't have the time to walk thru these steps multiple times with me. I can't wait to watch some of your other videos!!! Next is how to approach wavy/curly/frizzy hair and get that nice controlled curl as an outcome. Thank you!!!

Please continue to teach us and thank you so much! I absolutely disagree with the person you mentioned. Just because she teaches hair styling does not mean she has the same experience and expertise as you. We all have our own talents. I am frustrated with my own hair stylist because she does NOT EXPLAIN ANYTHING about her techniques, and I want to learn how to style my own hair better everyday at home. After experiencing that for several years, I am going to change stylists!
