      Yes a pixie would look great on her, with more height at the top. I also believe chunky highlights would work on her

      She looks good in that one style where you show short (shoulder length)but how to do it correctly not with the bangs and bob cut but the other one that you fixed. So many options for this pretty lady.

      Good point about working within the length vs. The actual length being dictated by face shape. I feel badly for my mother and aunt who are late 80s. They both suit their 1980s short modified poodle haircuts, aka what rude young folk call "Karen cuts". Both are arthritic but manage the bit of curling iron on top for height. But I hate the comments they get from the great grandkids behind their back. My mom tried a flatter closer to head style and it was awful, she looked like a heavy iron fell on her head top. I'd like to go short short but don't want the "karen" jokes either.

    • @diane5908
      @diane5908 2 года назад +6

      Spot on! Longer hair that's shaped well to my face actually looks better! And works better for me. And I've tried short hair thinking I had to at 54. Everyone is different no matter the age.

    Here is an idea for another video: What styles look good on people with asymmetrical faces, how to address parting, and whether bangs should be asymmetrical (even with a side part) or only side swept on one side only. (It kind of bugs me that I have side swept bangs on one side but my hair is considerably longer on the other side. It seems unbalanced.)

    I've been afraid of letting go of length for ages, even refusing layers (you scream, I can hear it!!) for fear of adding width to what I think is a round face ... after discovering your channel, though, I'm beginning to melt into the notion of serious layering ... Thank you for opening my mind.

    I’ve finally committed and sent out some photos for evaluation. My hair is so long & I’m considering pixie cutting - since I always throw it under a hat- but I worry ‘going short’ is just a default of my 40year old rut & I would like to avoid aging myself prematurely with a wrong cut.

    I really enjoy watching the two of you and think it’s great that you both can laugh so easily together! 🤣😂
    I feel like you hit on something in this video that I finally figured out for myself. I wanted long, layered hair, even though the people that styled my stick straight hair kept trimming it 2-3 inches every time and would say it’s too straight to add layers! 😡
    There was a period in my 20-30’s when I felt that my hair was soooooo boring and it really bothered me. I had to take an extended break from my stylists to be able to grow it longer. Cut to today (pun intended, lol), I said goodbye to my recent stylist who kept what I feel looked like frosted my hair and wouldn’t add layers. Now, I’m wearing it considerably longer, comparatively speaking, and it’s a more natural shade of brown with honey highlights, despite being in my late 50’s. I actually think it helps me look more “youthful”. I’m not talking Housewives of …fill in the blank…long, nothing glamorous here, but I’m finally ok with the length and I’m happy to say, the compliments I’ve been receiving seem to support my decision to trust my instincts. You’re always saying confidence comes from feeling comfortable in your own skin (and hair), I’m here to say, that is 100% true! 💫💫

  • @journalersketcher

    Justin, thank you for saying that it's not the length that matters and that low maintenance is different for everyone. My chin length bob cut last year was truly low maintenance (I could literally wash, air dry my hair, brush and go) and my cut this year was low maintenance for a couple of months while some of the layers started growing out. Then it was so high maintenance it made midback length hair be zero maintenance.

    I especially love this one!! She is so pretty and I think long hair suits her. I do like your ideas and love that long wavy style. I have similar problems (?) as my hair is about her length with a little layering but close to the ends. Hard to explain but I'm thinking I need more layers higher up so the perimeter is still strong (think you have said this.) My caveat is that I'm 72. I really feel like myself in long hair but...

    • @justinhickox
      @justinhickox  2 года назад +5

      I totally know exactly what you’re saying. What will likely happen is the layering at the very bottom would need to be taken off a little bit depending on how much it’s layered to create that stronger baseline. Then shorter layers in the back would work well to give your hair fullness and movement. I’m not sure if that makes sense.

Lands halfway down my back, layered and I let my grey grow out and I love it...I do have sort of layered bangs that I sometimes style to the side or straight down but they look soft so the straight works...A secret, I started to cut my own hair when Covid hit and now I do it all the time! The difficulty is that we can’t see and feel the texture and the amount of hair/volume. I have a lot of hair and wavy. I love it but need to know how to style it not to create volume. • @justinhickox
      @justinhickox  2 года назад +1

      Awesome! I’m glad that can help. If you have a similar face shape to Katrina then layers a bit longer than your chin or closer to your cheekbone would be fantastic. Personally I would push them towards the cheekbone but it’s a total personal decision and either length of work well for the shape of your face if that makes sense.

    You said that the layers on the side were too long. Would you make the layers shorter or have them grow longer so that they don’t make her cheeks look as wide?I’m also curious about the “ internal layering” . Could you demonstrate what that means? Thank you - I enjoy all your videos!

    • @justinhickox
      @justinhickox  2 года назад +1

      Thank you! I appreciate that. It’s a great question, I would take them shorter as they would break up the overall look a lot more and give her more of the softness when she pulls your hair back. Layers internally simply means layers in the back. So you have the layers in front which is everything from the top of your ears towards your face and then everything “internally “that would be behind the ears and in the back of your head.

    You are so wonderful to watch and incredibly helpful! I’ve also grown my hair out into what is a now “ non style” 😳 and am having breakage issues for the first time (I think it’s being over processed but I don’t know how to say that to the stylist without offending her and making her feel bad). I only wash and heat style my hair once a week because it’s thick and coarse and just doesn’t need it. It’s been highlighted though pretty much every time I go every 4 to 6 weeks… The stylist says each time that I could use more highlights and I feel like it’s gotten very brassy. I think I will go ahead and send you some Photos tomorrow and perhaps I will get lucky enough to have some feedback!

      You are paying your stylist for a service so why are you scared to speak up?? Oh right, you might hurt her/his feelings, look at it from a different perspective. How are they supposed to improve if their clients don't speak up. Your hair is getting damaged due to all the colouring/highlighting, yet they want to do more. How many clients are they loosing? At some point (when your hair is too damaged and falling out) you'll probably stop going and find someone else, then they are left not knowing what happened or why you (and others no doubt) left. Communicate!!!! Obviously no need to be mean or nasty, just simply say no more colouring until your hair stops breaking. Too much colouring has your hair at its breaking point literally so only haircuts for now. Have them feel your hair now and then when it's better, help them learn what your hair feels like when damaged and when healthy so they can learn, and grow as a stylist.

      @@canelami1285 thanks for your comment. I actually have said that I’m worried about the damage and want to take a break from hi lights for 4-6 months but she responds that the breakage is not from the hilights. I’m confused, she’s the professional, not me and I do really like her. At the same time more experienced colorists Who I have seen but who know longer live in my area have said that highlighting every time would absolutely caused damage and breakage but they are the ones right here touching my hair. Is it possible it could be something else? She has mentioned that peoples hair changes as they get older but 8 months ago my hair looked and felt fantastic… would it change that quickly? The hair that’s already grown wouldn’t change from aging because it’s already out of my scalp right?

    • @canelami1285
      @canelami1285 2 года назад

      @@sarahkalnajs5810 happy to hear that you did communicate clearly, unfortunately your stylist is in denial. Sad when a professional refuses to learn and grow, that is not your problem. Yes your hair does change as you age, it gets thinner, especially for women after/during menopause. Thinner is not breakage. Usually breakage is due to over processing your hair or major stress (loss of a loved one, job loss etc) or a new major health problem like an auto immune disorder. Listen to your gut (professional doesn't mean always right as even doctors get it wrong sometimes) as it's clearly telling you the problem is over processing. Refuse to have it colored, tinted etc. Since it felt great 8 months ago, wait that long before putting color again, 4 months isn't enough as you need a significant amount of new growth to get 💯 confirmation. If your stylist is pushy about highlighting it might be better to have someone else trim it in the meantime. Good luck💕

    Loe you and love the treat of when y'all work together! Her smile/laugh is so infectious!! I was wondering, on the hair shape/length, should body shape be taken into account? My hair is thin and fine, and while some women that aren't petite can rock a really short pixy type haircut or even a 1 length bob. I am 5'6" which is actually tall compared to most women I come in contact with, and a short bob or pixy does not work well on me. I think its that I am pear shaped with broad shoulders (could pass as an hourglass, but not all the same features). My hair was so long (yet thin) before one of my earlier surgeries and I haven't been able to wear it long since. I want extensions so badly to feel like myself, but hear they are unhealthy for the hair and a lot of upkeep (not sure Iwould have the energy for the removeable kind, but guess that would be a way to see if they are a good fit for me). I can't find a salon near enough to me that actually does it anyway. but back to the point. I look unbalanced in full pics. I know if its short it need to be fuller to balance with my shape, and the inverted styles work very well on me, but growing out is always that weird triangle that suits me as well as it did her. My stylist says for my hair type, I should keep it all one length, and I know she knows what she is talking about, I guess its me. I always decide to grow it out in the midst of the inverted style and that is where the problem and need for one length comes in. She did say, to be honest, as thin as it has gotten, I may never wear it long again. That killed me. Now I have just discovered wearing cute hats and am trying to be ok with that. (There are no bald spots and its healthy, just thin and fine- and I am the one with the health issues but take a lot of care with my hair- and always watch you and try to take your advice to the best of my ability). I would love those longer wavy pics u showed with the half ponytail. That is my fave way to wear hair. I still wear them, tho short and don't have the layers to come out and style. I am rambling way too much. I apologize. If I could get help with some pics I would send them in and ask - if you know of a good salon directory for getting extenstions, or even a really reputable place that sells the clip ins, I would love to know. So many blessings. It makes me so happy to watch y'all!! (Back to the client, sorry I went down a rabbit hole: It looks like, in first style transition, all she really needed was to smooth it a bit? But my faves were the long with layers (she looked like she might have broad shoulders?, and the partially grown out lifted bob. That was really cute! her before pic was also really beautiful tho! I don't think she could make a mistake that would make her look bad) blessings all

      Hi!
      Consider looking into the Halo hair pieces. You could put it on and off easily. No damage to your hair. It's basically fish string that holds it on and your hair goes over it. And if you needed more there are toppers, bangs, all kinds of artificial hair that doesn't need to be glued or taped these days. You would be surprised how common fake hair is!

      What may help, start looking for photos of different styles that you like. It doesn’t have to be the perfect style but maybe just I like the bangs on this photo, the length on this one, I like this kind of layers, and then things you don’t like. Usually that can help give you an idea of what direction to head if that makes sense. Then I would talk to my stylist about those ideas and try to determine which way to move. Does that make sense?

    I think my hairdresser lost her mind because when I brought in a picture of a layered haircut (very little layers) she pulled all my hair up & chopped it giving me a lot of blunt choppy layers & the top layer sits above my eyebrows. It is bad. I have very straight flat hair so imagine how bad it is. They flock up everywhere. She had never given me a bad haircut until then.
    Would you suggest another shorter haircut to fix it & if so which haircuts are best? or do you suggest I just deal with it & grow it out?

    I love the options of long layers w/ a side swept or curtain bang on her. I feel like the bob may make her look matronly. Can you tell me what you mean by “interior layers”?

    • @justinhickox
      @justinhickox  2 года назад +1

      I hear what you’re saying. I think the part about the Bob that is the most concerning is the way Photoshop makes it look. When you Photoshop an image it tends to look much more steps than it actually would be. So I totally hear what you’re saying there. When I say internal layers I mean layers in the back.

    Happy New Year! I love the longer #3 version personally but I also gravitate to longer hair. To me it's less maintenance since you can put it in a ponytail or quickly curl the ends and be done and don't have to wash and restyle it every day. On a separate note, what would you say is Dionne's hair color? I've been trying to get my stylist to get it like hers but mine is still too blonde and too golden. Any advice as to what to tell him? Once again, thanks for the series. So fun to watch every week!

    • @justinhickox
      @justinhickox  2 года назад +1

      Thank you so much! I really appreciate that. That’s a great question about Dionna’s color. It’s really hard for people to explain in words to a stylist what color they want as everybody sees things a little different as well as everybody refers to different colors slightly different. I find the best way you can achieve this is to find photos of colors that you like and colors that you don’t like and utilize those to describe what you want as a visual reference will always do better than a verbal reference. Does that make sense?

    • @Andra-cr9cd

      @@justinhickox , first of all, I'm so sorry I misspelled Dionna's name. My bad. Having an unusual name myself I hate when people get it wrong 😕 Secondly, yes what you said did make sense.
