It's great having a "homesteader" channel that is in NZ, I don't have to keep figuring out what to do when as all the overseas ones are always in a different season, so really enjoying your garden videos
We rarely waste food. The biggest culprit is bread, those last few slices add up. I freeze it and pull it out for soft breadcrumbs, toasted breadcrumbs, stuffing (plus extra for the freezer), bread and butter pudding.
I rarely make bread and butter pudding because I use the bread to make a cheese pudding The best way of making is dried breadcrumbs grated cheese preferably a strong cheddar (don't need as much) mix together then stir in milk with one egg. I also add pepper mustard or Worcestershire sauce and if I have one a finely chopped onion. Instead of using pasta for a tuna bake I use the cheese pudding and add tuna and sweet corn.
After watching this i no longer feel like a weird freak because I make EVERYTHING from scratch and I've done this my whole life, staying when I was a poor uni student in the 90s. I can't stand the idea of buying something when I can make it myself! Plus my version is usually healthier too (supermarket foods have added flavours and preservatives etc; Household and body products have surfactants, anti-v1rals/fungals/bacterials, synthetic perfumes and colours etc...)
The other really great benefit of soap, versus body wash, is that you're not wasting plastic anymore. The soap just wears away and all that you have is a bit of paper wrapping, as opposed to another plastic bottle.
I like to soak pasta in a pan of cold water for 4-8 hours, depending on how I want it. I find it softens up nicely so that I only need to warm it through when needed, saving fuel costs.
Buying in bulk is REALLY GREAT ADVICE Stacey and I totally understand the logic behind that. Working your way up to being able to do so - building the pantry up first with basics and the staples and then watch those savings bank up and the money that was used to purchase in bulk comes back into your pocket. Slow but surely - you’re doing a fantastic job Stacey!! Thank you for taking your time to put our quality content and to share your recession busting recipes, tips and tricks and all your experience knowledge and wisdom you’ve learnt along the way - sharing with others around the world.
Thank you so much. Yes, it took quite some time to get to where I am with the pantry. Over a year in fact, start with what you can spare, and as you say it builds up. It's great to hear from you and thank you for your amazing feedback.
Checking in from BC Canada. I had reconstructive surgery on my left ankle 2 days ago, and i am already over the crutches... the surgeon said up to 12 weeks recovery(with NO weight bearing on the left foot), so I'm going to have to do some of those same exercises. You are a rock star for continuing with your content even when you're supposed to be resting! Don't overdo things, though, luv! I love your channel!!
From the mountains of West Virginia Hello ! It is hitting hard everywhere, I buy bulk and can, and do freezer method on flour, pasta, cornmeal, dried beans, oats, and dehydrate, and air pressure jars for nuts, cereal and so many items.and vacuum seal, love your video’s ❤
Dear heart❤ old West Virginia girl here. So grateful for being raised in that beautiful state by frugal diligent parents that were raised in the Great Depression. They taught me so mush that now are just second nature. No waste, sew and mend clothes, can, cook from scratch, line dry, shop for bargains, save for emergencies, take good care of care, gardens every year, seed saving, baking bread, no useless gas wasting by bundling errands, never pay for what you can do yourself, thrift store and yard sales shopping, exercise with work and no gym fees, antennae with no cable, HELP YOUR NEIGHBORS AND FAMILY, . Finally last but not least, Dad said “Learn everything you can, because you never know when you will need to use it.” Learned to sew and saves a fortune. Yay for West Virginia folks raised well for sure.
Hi! Such cool videos and so good seeing local kiwi videos with products relevant to my family. I’d really love to see a video on the different sugars please!
That's it!!! you gave me the kick up the butt that I needed to stop wasting money on unnecessary things....I have a HUGE food storage since COVID times, even did a heap of preserving...but now I need to start making dry mixes (love your pancake mix, scone mix, mac n cheese etc it will be easy for the kids to get in the kitchen to make themself something, instead of me slaving away in the kitchen after working all day)...it'll not only save time and money but also teach them the joy of cooking ❤❤I'm also going to stop buying bodywash and handwash....I grew up in NZ when none of that existed....we used a bar of soap for all those things, and if you ran out of shampoo....well you had to use soap....I realise I have been caught up in consumerism for a long time, which has only taught my children the mindset of entitlement (cause now they expect to have the best, the latest things etc) getting back to basics will an eye opener for them 🤣🤣 thank you 🙏❤
It sounds like you have a great plan, I'm really glad the video gave you some great ideas. After bringing up 6 children myself, I understand the "mum there's NO FOOD" call. As you say, having some quick and easy food will help heaps. I would love it if you let me know how you go 😊
Great list of ideas! A couple cost saving ideas we utilize - make a pot of coffee on the morning (4 cups worth with 4 scoops), at lunch I simply add one scoop to the morning's grounds and make a second pot with no discernible weakness. Of course, we can always get a second cup of tea, maybe a weak third, from a tea bag. Leftovers are carefully planned - and utilized. (It's too easy to "lose" something in the 'frig and find it too late to use. We eat mindfully, with actually proper portions, trying to avoid overeating - both healthy and money-wise. As in many cultures, we use meat often used as flavoring (like a bit of sausage or ham) and/or a little addition to vegetable protein - again probably both healthy and money- wise. And total bonus, we found a farmer who sells "second" eggs (slightly oddly shaped or sized) that he can't sell commercially - for less than half the grocery store price.
If you have excess eggs, they can be frozen. Ive frozen loads, plenty for all of winter. Would love recipe for the mustard, sauces and sugars please. Love your channel
So sorry to hear about your knee. I can really empathize as I am recovering from a very bad knee sprain myself. I totally agree about meal planning! I also learned how to make an easy sourdough so am not dependent on commercial yeat as it was difficult to find during the pandemic. Also, something we have in the States is on line grocery shopping. The store pulls the order and brings it out to your car. This keeps us from so much impulse shopping which, at times, has really inflated our grocery budget.
There is a lady on a ranch upcountry on my province of BC Canada. She has an excellent channel and grows/raises much of what they use. Her name is Chelsea and the channel is Little Mountain Ranch. I am a single senior with mobility issues living in an apartment so much of the bulk things are not so much use but I still use some of the tips. Your prices seem better than ours even before doing the dollar conversion. Over this past year, I have cut my electric consumption by 75%, including over the winter.(my heat/hot water is all electric) Meantime, take care of your knee.
I love Chelsea's channel, and I've followed her since her channel almost began. Her property is amazing. Thanks for watching and fir your well wishes. Take care stacey
Unfortunately bulk buying up front requires funds up front. I agree growing any fruit or veg will help the budget. I started a brand new veg garden orchard 7 months ago have moved house and although we won’t have fruit off our trees for a couple of years we started picking veg 3 months ago and have been eating raspberries and strawberries all summer. A hint regarding soap always unwrap it before storing ( I am almost 76 with one artificial hip and waiting for my second but even if it hurts gentle exercise is beneficial to mental and body health) the soap will last a lot longer. I also make all my dogs food
When I started my bulk buying journey I only allocated an extra $20 per week and built up my pantry that way. It takes time but once you do it things get easier. Some weeks I only had a few dollars to spare but I would buy an extra can here and there. That is wonderful you have a new space to grow your own, it's lovely to wander out in the garden to collect fresh veges for dinner. Thanks for watching and all the best for your second operation.
Another great video :) Something I do to make meat go further is add TVP and/or red lentils or beans to mince, every mince recipe can handle at least one of those things. I used to get only one meal from 500g of meat, now I get 2 or sometimes 3. Luckily my teenager likes mexican flavours/foods, and eats vegetables!
Pure Castile soap can be used for just about everything either full strength or diluted. Just read the label. It comes unscented and in various other scents. I like Tea Tree and Eucalyptus.
I saw the how-to on golden syrup. I'm taking some notes. It's those little things that add so much to meals and locally in our area the prices of the main items is so high that those little extras make all the difference.
I made your pizza bases and they were a great idea and I really enjoyed them when I had forgotten to take something out for dinner , I buy in bulk only a few staples as live by myself , I cook in bulk and freeze in portions sizes . I make my own bread , yogurt and have recently started to make my own flavoured oats and granola , they taste yummy .
First of all, take care of you! I'm glad to hear your knee is better, but don't overdo. We will be here whenever you have the time/energy/inclination to give us a video. Yes, please, do as many instructional videos on homemade condiments and pantry staples as you can. The ones you have done in the past are fabulous and I can't wait to see more. I'm a big fan of bulk buying and "puck freezing" as well. Thanks for the tips and see you next time!
Thank you so much! I will definitely get onto that. I can't believe how much a strong anti-inflammatory has made. Thanks as always for your comment and fir watching x
WOMAN!!! At some point you have just got to STOP and take care of YOU! But, if it's any consolation...I fell asleep a couple weeks ago with my makeup on and my contacts in, and managed to win myself a lovely corneal ulcer. I am healed now, but still - aren't we a pair? LMAO! Seriously, slow down a little and take care of you! This video is and your tips are wonderful, and it's fantastic you are sharing with the rest of us. LOVE & HUGS!!!
Hahaha, we certainly are a pair. I'm glad your eye feels better. That sounds painful. I was very good and restrained myself all week with my leg up. By Friday, however, I was nope. I need to catch up with my invisible friends I chst to in my kitchen lol 😆🙃😅
Thank you yes where we are here in Auckland so many fast food joints but we would prefer to make it ourselves instead of buying it love the vids keep it up
I enjoyed Your bit regarding ‘take aways’! It’s Truth! Living rural=no icky ‘convenient takeaway’ within range, no pizza nor restaurant delivery to order ‘for convenience’. We make Our Own convenience through planning & bit of work to reap rewards! Appreciating Your Channel Stacey!
I have gone back to using soap. I’ve also got shampoo and conditioner in a soap form. I’ve hung them in old knee high stockings. My own version of “soap on a rope”. They last so much longer. Get better with your knee. Keep it elevated and use ice packs.
No recession and much cheaper in Australia. For example can buy basic pasta for 89¢ for 500g. But inflation is biting. Do buy 20kg bags of rice as a staple, with some other varieties, like black/brown, just for the change. Other basics are pearl cous, cous, vacuum packed gnocchi, polenta etc. Am a member of a local community garden which supplies me with whatever herbs and veg is seasonal. I go to the local markets on Sundays and pick up ready to cook veg and fruit and jar those after cooking. My freezer is small so I heat the jars to over 120°C for half an hour. The jars are used passata and gherkin jars, I try and avoid using plastics especially for long term storage. Cooked meals for the week are portioned up in glass containers. Costco is not actually cheaper for most things and all their processed foods are typically American, too much salt, sugar, fats and additives. I am verry impressed by your efficiency and organisation. Great job! 😀
I've been making laundry detergent (powder) for years. I buy the ingredients a bit at a time then make a big batch in a 5lt bucket with a lid. One batch lasts our family of five approx 6mths and it works so much better than the store bought powders.
Noted! thank you for watching and I hope you are getting some more canning done. I just got my Thermomix to make a apricot jam. Took me five minutes and the machine did the rest including sterilizing the jars. Such a great machine. I hope you are well.
Im growing veggies, jarred preservatives, planted more fruit trees. Unfortunately I cant buy in bulk where I live. I look at dollars per gram. Going to make your golden syrup, crumpets and other things on your post. Saw your posts last night and love it
Sorry for knee problem(what a pain!). Bulk stores here require a subscription which I abhor, hence don’t utilize. I do find bulk savings in other places. We live rural also & 2 nearest grocers each 20 + minutes drive to.
Pasta is my no. 1. Rice absorbs flavor so you can add just about anything to make it tasty. With corn starch or flour and bouillon, homemade gravies are good with fry bread. Teas are nice hot or cold with honey and lemon. Pb&j is satisfying when you need something sweet. Regrow veggies (cut celery, onions, romaine lettuce, scallions etc) Keep seeds from cheery tomatoes and peppers) Precook meat crumbles so that they can be divided and packaged for multiple meals. Buy largest tomato sauce and freeze portions in ziplock baggies flat to save space in freezer.
Great tips😊I love bar soaps and hang mine in one of those little cotton mesh bags (I actually think it is a tiny repurposed vege bag) and the soap dries out between uses👍I would love to see how you make icing sugar- thanks!
I loved shopping at Gilmours, but ours shut a few years ago. I'll have to fit a "Gilmours Day" in for my next trip to Wellington. My poor car driving home on our post-Gabrielle roads 😮
Oh please take care of yourself. I live in Queensland and I have the same issue with my knee but I can’t get to see a specialist for a whole year 😢. When the pain meds didn’t work well they also found out I have fibromyalgia as well. I totally know what it’s like to try and weight bearing on one leg. Do what you can, when you can. We all love your videos ❤
#1 - get yourself a tall stool to sit and make those ravioli!!! I've made those for the freezer and they are great - put them in a brown butter and sage sauce, also did gorgonzola creamy sauce another time. It's interesting to hear you discuss your prices- they seem SO high to me, but I'm wondering what the dollar conversion would be?? You're doing great on your challenge to not go to the grocery store for a year. That's a huge undertaking. Take care of that knee!
Hahaha, the start of your comment made me giggle. I am so going to do it very soon! I love ravioli in brown butter and sage, I've made them before but it was many many moons ago. Our prices really are very high here, we have less competition here which means the supermarkets can make massive profits at our expense. Thank you for your kind words of encouragement and thanks for watching.
I'm renovating my house so not much to spent and no space for a big pantry or fridgefreezer at the moment. But buy with coupons, check the lost leaders , promotions etc. I buy in bulk rice, potato, canned beans, onions and spagetti. And in generally I cook a veggie meat sauce for three days and then eat it one day with potato , one day with rice and one day with pasta. I bake bread on Sunday with a breadbaking machine . Just found your channel , like it.
Thank you for all the great tips, I just found your channel 😊 I would love to learn how to make mustard & tomato sauce. I hope your knee is feeling a bit better. A meniscus tear hurts so much, I did it about ten years ago & remember that pain still.
Thank you for watching. I will definitely be making them in the next few weeks. Oh yes, it's certainly not been the best trying to work on it. I look forward to chatting to you in the comments 😀
If you can flash freeze that tomatoe paste or anything then put it in the bag it will not clump up and stick, it each cup freezes seperate. It works for a lot of things. Ohio USA
Yes, I put heaped tablespoons of the paste onto a tray then flash freeze it. I then pop it into a bag and grab a puck out as I need it. I also do it for garlic, ginger, onions, and curry paste. Thanks for watching.
Would love your mustard recipe!!! I meal plan, calculate as I'm going around the shop doing my list, I use wee-wipes (a bit controversial but they work for me), make my own booze (wine, spirits & beer), I grow veggies and water-bath can or freeze them, cook from scratch, I don't have a car (massive savings right there!!!), make my own cleaning products, use cornflour instead of talcum powder, I used to make my own shower-gel from soap & when my current 1 litre bottle ends I'll be getting back into that again. I buy chicken thighs and maryland and bone and fiatten it myself for schnitzels and so on (made with homemade breadcrumbs). I'm sure I do more budget busting hacks, but too many to remember or list here. Love your channel. Sorry about your knee. I'm waiting for a replacement too so I feel your pain. Cheers from South Oz.
Can you please show me what you do with your onions? I love using them but hate cutting them for every meal and I’m thinking that the way you were talking about doing it sounds like it could really work.😊
Some great tips, although I don't think I can give up my bodywash 😂 what are some of your must have kitchen equipment that have made things easier? Pasta maker, canner, jars you use, storage
Thank you so much for sharing all these great tips and recipes and explaining and showing things so well :) I was just glued to your crumpet video! I dehydrate as many things as I can as I wouldn't have room in the freezer otherwise. (And it means there's no energy required for the storage :)) I dehydrate on a low setting which means the nutrients are retained and I love how we can just rehydrate however much of the item we can use at the time. For example, we grow rhubarb and I buy apples in 10 kg bags and cook them in the slow cooker and then mash/puree them and dehydrate them on sheets - a bit like fruit leathers :) I store them in glass jars and just rehydrate what we want for breakfast or dessert or baking. I find as they are so thin they rehydrate very quickly - while I'm making my coffee almost :) Fellow Kiwi (I echo one of your responses to an offshore viewer - one of the consequences of a very small population and a faraway location means relatively high prices are what we have to contend with - but lots of compensations in our homeland :) Thank you again :)
Thank you so much for your comment and for watching my other videos as well. I love dehydration it's something I do but I don't do enough videos on it. I really must do some. The puree you do sounds delicious!. Thanks again, I'm hoping to feel better soon so I can make a new video.
I’d love to know how to make mustard please…Stacey have you thought of a support for your knee ? I bought one for the time I had to wait before getting my knee replacement , and it was a great help..Hope it eases up soon x
Bathroom cleaner, i put bicarb soda in a container, add enuf liquid dish detergent to make a paste, i find its great. Dishwasher, when load is only slightly soiled i use 3 drops of dishwashing detergent, then top up with bicarb soda, dishwasher tablets so expensive😮
Thank you and yes I am totally going to make some up in the next few days. It's going to rain here soon and hopefully, it will be cooler and I can get in the kitchen and make some. I'm thinking pumpkin and ricotta. I hope you are well much love X
So sorry to hear about your knee issues, but glad you now know what is going on with it. Hopefully, rest and elevation will continue relieving the pain. I would love to see both how to make the the various sugars and how to make various condiments. I make my own ketchup, but have never made mustard from scratch and would love to know how. I have three bottles o body wash in the cabinet and when it’s gone we will also be going back to bar soap. The price difference is insane and when using the same brand as the wash, I can’t tell a difference. Thank for all the great tips! Take care of yourself and we’ll enjoy seeing you whenever you’re feeling up to visiting with us. ☺️
Thanks so much for your good wishes and like you say now we know what's going on it will hopefully help and fingers crossed I don't need surgery. I'm so pleased you had thoughts about body wash as well, after all, it's only really a new-ish product. I had to laugh though as my frugal husband came home with a bottle the other day so maybe he likes it better hahaha. Much love x
I like the sound of soap making body wash, however, soap leaves a horrid scum on my shower glass, 3 years ago we put a new shower glass in I only use body wash in the shower and there is no longer scum. Just a thought, love your video’s .
Hope you are feeling better! Rest! & take care of yourself. Sending you energy healing 🙏 💜 😇 🌟 I have a back disk issue & suffer from anemia. Rest is key! New subscriber, loving your videos. Yes! Pls, would love to learn how to make different kinds of mustard. & suger ❤ I buy bulk, when I can, especially flour. I can make breads, pizza dough, muffins etc to feed my family. Food prices are higher now, try to budget, base my meals on grocery flyers meal plan for the week. Great tips on cleaning, will check out your video pine needles. Great! Meal planning printable, thank-you ! 😊✨ We live in apt, would love to have my own garden. I have a indoor garden kit to grow hearb & veggies , just thinking of what to grow first. I'm thinking of herbs, rosemary, basil, lettuce. My grandmother had a beautiful vegetable garden, also fruit like raspberries, rhubarb. Yes! Gardening takes a lot of time, remember helping my grandmother as a kid. My grandmother was a great baker too! Have a lovely week ahead. Much love & blessings from Toronto Canada 🇨🇦 Namaste 🙏 ❤😇 🌟
Thanks so much for your lovely message and for taking the time out to send it to me. I have lower back issues as well so I can relate to what you are going through. I am sending you healing thoughts and blessings
New subscriber so I've got lots to catch up on! Great tips, take care of that knee, I'm recovering from hip surgery which is slow going but will all be worth it in the long run 😊
Iam retired and live on my own so I don't need to much bulk, however I have just made my tomato relish and tomato sauce. My garlic and onions are hanging in the shed. Iam interested in all the products you can teach me. Thankyou.
well done, every little bit helps. Buying in bulk doesn't have to be big lot amounts. It also can mean, if for instance your toothpaste comes onto special buy 3-4 at the special price and you have a year's supply for much cheaper than full price. That's how I started off. I hope that makes sense for you :-)
Hope your knees still on the improve, lots of good ideas , lots that wouldn’t work for me but still enjoyed listening, and need to watch your meal planning video again, we don’t do takeaways but hubby and I do lots of yo-yo nights (your on your own )
Haha I love it Yo-Yo nights. I tried a 3 hour shift last night at work and today my knee is a balloon. One more shift tonight to get through. I love monthly meal planning think once and don't have to worry about it for the rest of the month.
Hope your knee has improved since you made this video. I'm a newbie so trying to catch up..loving your down to earth approach..not to different to us Aussies..lol 🇦🇺💛💚
I'll be making brown sugar soon - I'm almost out of the store bought supply. I'm putting up clotheslines in the next couple of weeks (rain is coming by the end of this one) to hang dry laundry. Switched the cat litter from clumping clay to pine pellet livestock bedding from the feed store - it's less than half the price. Like you, we are always on the hunt for new ways to save some money! Started making our own mayonnaise, yellow mustard, ketchup and BBQ sauce a couple of months ago, and have been making our own bread for a couple of years now. This month I menu planned and shopped for 2 months vs 1 - I figure we probably saved about $70-$80, more if the price of food goes up again in February. I learned a couple of years ago how to water glass eggs to allow me to store them for a year without needing refrigeration, but we don't have chickens yet and you can't do it with store bought eggs, so that's a future strategy!
You have lots of great things you are doing to help. The more we cut back on what we need to buy the more savings we make. Every dollar counts now, I bet you can't wait to get chickens. I love mine. Thanks for letting us know what you are doing to save.
I think you should watch out for gilmores and Costco. Bulk doesn’t equate to cheaper. Some of these items are definitely cheaper in single packs from discount stores. The pasta for instance.
I know my price points well as I've been shopping like this for years. I used to shop for the specials and never paid full price for anything. It's how I built up my pantry. Instead of buying one thing on special, I would buy say three to stock up so I never buy at the full price. The pasta is a huge saving. The same type of pasta is $3.40 for five hundred grams so $34 for the five kg bag I got. I'm also doing a challenge this year, not shopping at the usual supermarkets and buying locally as much as possible. I enjoyed shopping at Costco but won't be renewing my membership as it's just too far to travel but if you shop well there are definitely savings there when you look. Thanks for watching and for your input.
Totally agree... it's all about knowing the price per kg that you're willing to pay. I bulk buy some things (Iike 5kgs of pasta x2 ) but not flour as it's cheaper in smaller bags. Luckily I seem to have a calculator in my head (for food prices only!😂)
The very best way to mitigate shortages and inflation is to be a mindful prepper, and have enough variety on hand that there is no need for any impulse shopping. Have three pantries, one for items to use now, one to replace the first, and one for items that last for years, as in freeze dried, or things such as honey, dry items such as wheat berries and other grains or beans packed in sealed in mylar bags inside plastic buckets I shop 'REDUCED' bins mid-week for fresh fruits and veggies, use some now, and dehydrate the rest for future use. I eat plant-based, organic where possible, high fiber, low fat, low protein, no sugar or processed foods use filtered water. I eat wild salmon and other non-farmed fish occasionally. I shop the bulk bins at Winco, as well as Outlet stores. Almost everything else I buy used, in excellent condition, which allows me to afford petrol. I have an electric bike for fun and exercise. Instead of holidays, I enjoy Days Out, and always take picnics instead of eating out. I DO NOT meal plan, because I only buy foods I would use at rockbottom prices, or grow it in the garden, or a DIY hydroponic setup. And, never waste anything ever, take care of and maintain everything, Quality is always better than quantity.
thank you for the brown sugar. Good idea I will do. I make my own pasta, bread, scones and all baked from the bulk flour too. It feels daunting first but you get good at it. I make dumplings, gnocchi or dry pasta whenever I feel like it and store it. Your pasta can include veggies like squash, dried tomatoes, spinach, chickweed, mushroom and be healthier too. I sttarted freezing a lot more this year. I didn/t know melons freeze beautifully and get sweeter. I bought a whole bunch cheap last summer and I am still eating them with porridge in the mornings from the freezer. Only buying what I need not what I want I am learning. We used to buy so much for no reason. I am eating less and feeling healthier. Had not a healthy relationship with food before. Thank you for your video.
Hello, and thank you for your comment. You have been doing so well by the sounds of it. I love the idea of freezing melons. They are currently in season, so great idea. Thank you.
Hi! New subscriber here from Wisconsin. Great content! What happened to your freezer door, lol!! I did the pine needle vinegar last year. Working on a low spend 2024, getting creative with whatever is on hand!
Awesome! Thank you! I love your YT name! Well, long story short it was in storage, and a young teenager had some knuckle time with it. It's okay it is an old fridge and hopefully it will last a bit longer before I have to replace it. My other fridge doesn't fit in that spot so it's in the dining room. I'm also on a very low spend this year and I'm being more intentional about how I spend that budget by using up some older stock and meat in the freezer. Thanks for watching
How can you afford to buy in bulk , we are on a pension and the outlay is too much. Love your organization and i hope your knee will be better soon. I would love some low calorie meals. Linda nz
It's great having a "homesteader" channel that is in NZ, I don't have to keep figuring out what to do when as all the overseas ones are always in a different season, so really enjoying your garden videos
Keep up the great work, love your videos thank you
We rarely waste food. The biggest culprit is bread, those last few slices add up. I freeze it and pull it out for soft breadcrumbs, toasted breadcrumbs, stuffing (plus extra for the freezer), bread and butter pudding.
I rarely make bread and butter pudding because I use the bread to make a cheese pudding
The best way of making is dried breadcrumbs grated cheese preferably a strong cheddar (don't need as much) mix together then stir in milk with one egg.
Go you! sounds like you are onto it for sure
The other really great benefit of soap, versus body wash, is that you're not wasting plastic anymore. The soap just wears away and all that you have is a bit of paper wrapping, as opposed to another plastic bottle.
And there's a LOT less chemicals going down the drain and being absorbed into your skin 🙏🌟👏
I like to soak pasta in a pan of cold water for 4-8 hours, depending on how I want it. I find it softens up nicely so that I only need to warm it through when needed, saving fuel costs.
A great tip
Love to see Djon mustard!
your whole grain mustard recipe is awesome, I was amazed how simple it is. Time to make some more!
Love to see sugar prep, tomato source, mustard etc
Checking in from BC Canada. I had reconstructive surgery on my left ankle 2 days ago, and i am already over the crutches... the surgeon said up to 12 weeks recovery(with NO weight bearing on the left foot), so I'm going to have to do some of those same exercises. You are a rock star for continuing with your content even when you're supposed to be resting! Don't overdo things, though, luv! I love your channel!!
Take care of yourself! You are a beautiful lady, inside and out!❤ I love your videos. -a fan from Southern California!😊
Thanks so much and thank you for watching.
I am a kiwi too and really appreciate your videos. Where is Gilmours?
They are all over the North Island, google it and you might see on closer to you.
I would love to see a video on making pumpkin ravioli!
Thanks so much for these amazing tips! I'm sure other viewers will get some great ideas from them too.
Love the bulk pasta idea.
If you have excess eggs, they can be frozen. Ive frozen loads, plenty for all of winter. Would love recipe for the mustard, sauces and sugars please. Love your channel
Great job
I would love for you to show how you make the sugars!
Ok, I will definitely do that. Thanks for watching.
Hope you get well soon, God Bless and look after your knees!
Over this past year, I have cut my electric consumption by 75%, including over the winter.(my heat/hot water is all electric)
Meantime, take care of your knee.

I totally agree about bodywash v soap. I buy Pears soap in bulk online - the only soap we use, apart from Sunlight.
I also bulk buy flour.
Pure Castile soap can be used for just about everything either full strength or diluted. Just read the label. It comes unscented and in various other scents. I like Tea Tree and Eucalyptus.
Just watched a vid last night on making 55 meals with $50... amazing! Thank you! Instant follow😁
Awesome! Thank you! so much
I saw the how-to on golden syrup. I'm taking some notes. It's those little things that add so much to meals and locally in our area the prices of the main items is so high that those little extras make all the difference.
Could you please show me how to make condensed milk, air freshener, golden syrup
The name of the place I get zote soap is at caramba online Mexican store. They had zote for $4.50 ea. They have tortillas etc
🎉great tips, thank you Stacey, I would love to know how you make the different sugars xx
Thanks for the great tips rest that knee and feel better look after you first take as long as you need we will still be here take care
Thank you, I will. I hope you are well 😊
@@FarmersWifeHomestead I hear ya, I can only sit for so long before I need to get up and move around. LMAO @ "invisible friends" you crack me up!
😂😂😂😂😂
Thank you yes where we are here in Auckland so many fast food joints but we would prefer to make it ourselves instead of buying it love the vids keep it up
I enjoyed Your bit regarding ‘take aways’! It’s Truth! Living rural=no icky ‘convenient takeaway’ within range, no pizza nor restaurant delivery to order ‘for convenience’. We make Our Own convenience through planning & bit of work to reap rewards! Appreciating Your Channel Stacey!
thank you :-)
I have gone back to using soap. I’ve also got shampoo and conditioner in a soap form. I’ve hung them in old knee high stockings. My own version of “soap on a rope”. They last so much longer. Get better with your knee. Keep it elevated and use ice packs.
Comment for the algorithm. 😊

Hello there! Thank you so much for doing that. 💗
Glad you’ve managed to get into the specialist❤. Yes would love the recipes for Dijon mustard etc.
Noted! thank you for watching and I hope you are getting some more canning done. I just got my Thermomix to make a apricot jam. Took me five minutes and the machine did the rest including sterilizing the jars. Such a great machine. I hope you are well.
Wow just saw one of those machines the other day. You can do so much in them. You would pay it back in no time.
Im growing veggies, jarred preservatives, planted more fruit trees. Unfortunately I cant buy in bulk where I live. I look at dollars per gram. Going to make your golden syrup, crumpets and other things on your post. Saw your posts last night and love it
Thanks for sharing!
Sorry for knee problem(what a pain!). Bulk stores here require a subscription which I abhor, hence don’t utilize. I do find bulk savings in other places. We live rural also & 2 nearest grocers each 20 + minutes drive to.
Just found your channel, love it!!!❤ fellow kiwi mum here 😊
Welcome!!
Thanks so much for your comment on how you are saving during these hard times. It all helps, and helping each other is a great way to start 😀
Great tips😊I love bar soaps and hang mine in one of those little cotton mesh bags (I actually think it is a tiny repurposed vege bag) and the soap dries out between uses👍I would love to see how you make icing sugar- thanks!
Great idea!! If you check my channel I made a video after this one showing how to make icing sugar from white sugar. Let me know if you can't find it.
Icing sugar... place in blender and whizz until powder. Stop before that for castor sugar 😊
YOUR such a Super Hero - YOUR tips are so needed
Happy to help! I'm only ever an email away if you need to reach out :-)
New word for me - puck - learned something about freezing in pucks, thanks.
I loved shopping at Gilmours, but ours shut a few years ago. I'll have to fit a "Gilmours Day" in for my next trip to Wellington. My poor car driving home on our post-Gabrielle roads 😮
Try Moore Wilsons, they are down in Wellington. I love them more than Gilmours
We all love your videos ❤
thanks so much, and I'm sorry to hear you have knee issues as well. It certainly is not great.
Hi Stacy hope your knee is getting better soon you take care have a wonderful weekend,❤ watching you every day from Wellington ❤
Look for a perching stool... they are slightly higher at tye back than tge front... save yourself... save your body
Thanking you 😁😁😁
Ask specialist about a cortisone shot in the knee, it's very good for some conditions, and it doesn't hurt.
All the best with your knee. 🌺🌺
thank you for being a great sharer
I'm renovating my house so not much to spent and no space for a big pantry or fridgefreezer at the moment. But buy with coupons, check the lost leaders , promotions etc. I buy in bulk rice, potato, canned beans, onions and spagetti. And in generally I cook a veggie meat sauce for three days and then eat it one day with potato , one day with rice and one day with pasta. I bake bread on Sunday with a breadbaking machine . Just found your channel , like it.
Thank you for giving us some more tips. There is nothing nicer than the smell of bread baking. Thank you for watching.
Thank you for all the great tips, I just found your channel 😊
I would love to learn how to make mustard & tomato sauce.
Check out Gilmours for filled pastas... Moore Wilsons in welly does 1kg bags for under $20. Great to keep in the fridge or freezer for a quick meal.
Hmm maybe I've looked in the wrong place in Gilmours I will look again. I miss Moore Wilsons. Home is the Wairarapa for me. I am now in the Waikato.
I use an ice-cube tray for flash freezing tomato paste, and homemade pesto in smaller, useable amounts.
I love using them but hate cutting them for every meal and I’m thinking that the way you were talking about doing it sounds like it could really work.😊
Video coming up soon on onions.
Hi would love to know how to make different sugars clever!
Some great tips, although I don't think I can give up my bodywash 😂 what are some of your must have kitchen equipment that have made things easier? Pasta maker, canner, jars you use, storage
hahaha I love the thick lather of soap :-)
Yes, it has been requested quite a lot so watch out for that one very soon.
Thank you so much for sharing all these great tips and recipes and explaining and showing things so well :) I was just glued to your crumpet video!
I dehydrate as many things as I can as I wouldn't have room in the freezer otherwise. (And it means there's no energy required for the storage :))
I dehydrate on a low setting which means the nutrients are retained and I love how we can just rehydrate however much of the item we can use at the time. I find as they are so thin they rehydrate very quickly - while I'm making my coffee almost :)
Fellow Kiwi
(I echo one of your responses to an offshore viewer - one of the consequences of a very small population and a faraway location means relatively high prices are what we have to contend with - but lots of compensations in our homeland :)
Thank you again :)
Thanks for sharing!! Great tips
Yes how to make icing sugar and condiments
Those are some great tips. Take care of your knee. I would be interested in the pumpkin ravioli
Thank you and yes I am totally going to make some up in the next few days. It's going to rain here soon and hopefully, it will be cooler and I can get in the kitchen and make some. I'm thinking pumpkin and ricotta. I hope you are well much love X
Can you do a video on basic "kitchen appliances" that help your budget
Great idea, yes I can do that.
Wow
Sending you energy healing 🙏 💜 😇 🌟
I have a back disk issue & suffer from anemia. Rest is key!
New subscriber, loving your videos.
Yes! Pls, would love to learn how to make different kinds of mustard. & suger ❤
I buy bulk, when I can, especially flour.
I can make breads, pizza dough, muffins etc to feed my family. Food prices are higher now, try to budget, base my meals on grocery flyers meal plan for the week.
Great tips on cleaning, will check out your video pine needles.
Great! Meal planning printable, thank-you ! 😊✨
We live in apt, would love to have my own garden.

Thanks so much for your lovely message and for taking the time out to send it to me. I have lower back issues as well so I can relate to what you are going through. I am sending you healing thoughts and blessings
Would love to see how to make the different sugars!
Delightful. Hope your knee is feeling better. You are doing a wonderful job for us all. THANK YOU
thank you so much
New subscriber so I've got lots to catch up on! Great tips, take care of that knee, I'm recovering from hip surgery which is slow going but will all be worth it in the long run 😊
Thank you, I will be having surgery on that knee in a few months, take care of yourself, and all the best in your recovery as well.
Could you please show me how to make brown sugar and icing sugar. And mustard.
What great practical tips! I looked up Gilmours any ideas how would I go about getting the bulk items if I'm not a business etc?
Give your local one a call some will let you in without a business.
Thank you ❤
You're welcome 😊 Thanks for watching
thankyou for being so relatable very good advice
Luckily I seem to have a calculator in my head (for food prices only!😂)
First time seeing your video. Great ideas to make your own condiments 🎉 sorry your knee is causing you so much pain. Take care🎉🎉🎉
Thank you so much! And thank you for watching.
Just found your channel got to watch all videos. Great videos .
Thanks so much
The very best way to mitigate shortages and inflation is to be a mindful prepper, and have enough variety on hand that there is no need for any impulse shopping.
Thank you for your comment. I wish it wasn't so expensive to get freeze-driers over here. They are over $10,000 to get here.
I think she meant a dehydrator
You can use powdered alum you use for cooking to put on your underarms for deodorant 🎉
thank you for the brown sugar.
Thank you.
@@FarmersWifeHomestead yes it works. They also turn sweeter
Do U use a pressure canner for chicken and pineapple?
😂ive been binge watching your videos. What a fantastic resource you provide!!! Do you have a Patreon that I can send support?
Can't shop at Gilmour's or Costco in south is any other suggestions?
Hi can you tell me were you bulk buy your products from please please please 💞
