Quick nachos was a life saver for my large family, I always had baked pita triangles, sour cream, frozen or fresh guacamole ( depending on season) large jar of salsa and grated cheese, almost became “entree” as I put together whatever was in slow cooker / air fryer for dinner. The kids felt safe knowing food was a priority when we all got home. Kept arguments at bay, and encouraged chatting in the kitchen hearing about each others day.

I don’t eat out or eat convenience junk food, my kids are grown and I still do these things for myself !!! I love to cook but I love to have a quick homemade snack or meal in the freezer for when I’m busy with other stuff !
One of my favorite that you didn’t mention is breakfast burritos, soft scrambled eggs, a breakfast meat, cheese and salsa wrapped in a tortilla shell. Wrapped individually they are a quick heat in the microwave or in a skillet (for that crunchy shell). Ingredient choices are endless.
These ideas are so much cheaper and healthier than store bought junk and can save a lot of frustration in the home with hangry kids :)

A big welcome to the world, little ones! A great place to hang out is grandma's kitchen.
Right before sitting down to watch, I put a bowl of pimento cheese in the fridge. Easy to plop a spoonful onto bread. Pimentos are expensive so sub diced red bell pepper. Microwave some pepper pieces a few seconds to soften. Much more budget friendly. Also, have a 97 cents USD homemade yogurt for an easy breakfast. Or nuke a couple quesadillas (cheese on a tortilla).
Yes, to teaching kids to cook and other life skills.

When my son was a teen he would stomp in and start foraging cupboards, not for himself but for others. He'd say, "What of this don't we need?" I'd just say whatever you're willing to do without. He'd load it up and out the door he'd go to get some kids a meal that didn't have one. Nice ideas for grandmas/great grandmas too!

If you have some ready made snacks and meals your budget will take less of a beating. I had a son who would make a pizza but be over generous with the toppings. And you can use up leftovers that might not appeal to a hungry teen in its leftover state. An apple muffin is more likely to eaten than that one going soft apple would. Plus you can add a bit of bran etc for more nutrition. We all have ideas, lets share them. Food is never going to get cheaper and teens will always have an appetite.

Lmao!!!! Ohhhhh Stacey your video intro was singing to the choir here, the "nothing to eat" cry is all too familiar! My kids won't cook anything beyond the microwave or the air fryer most of the time...although I am slowly easing my younger son into using the oven. It's a never ending battle to find easy ways for them to keep their tummies filled without the junk eh. My kids loved it when I made up single serves of mac and cheese and had them in the freezer, and we did our version of MKR too. I'd make the same bread dough or cookie dough etc and they would get to add their own variations to it.

Do like the Italians makes a batch of tomato sauce and freeze in small portion blocks microwave sauce while cooking pasta, or even cook whole packet of pasta like penne or butterfly type, mix with tomato sauce devide into 5 or 6 individual portions and freeze. Just microwave when needed. Do same with cheese sauce with ham chopped into it, use macaroni. I freeze the portions with pasta directly into soup bowls with handles then dip bottom of bowls in hot water 20 seconds and it pops out like a pasta block which I put in large bags, back in freezer. When ready to eat use same bowl with handle which fits perfectly. Pop in microwave when coming in from work, go get changed/unpacked,/showered and dinner is waiting warm in microwave when done.

If I had teen kids (I don't have children) I'd stuff my freezer with homemade mini pizzas ready to bake in the oven, home made hot pockets/turnovers. Those are so easy to pick out and heat up, even for a lazy teen 😁Great after school snacks. I'd also keep some one serving of their favourite soups in the freezer so they could heat it up in the microwave.

Oh I so resonate with your first comment. I used to say that unless my kids found a pie Warmer in the cupboard or fridge with ready to eat food...there was nothing to eat 😅. Stuffed baked spuds were great, ready made toasties, and in winter i had soup in fridge they could heat easily after school, when I was at work. Biscuits went nowhere on a now
6ft 4 young teen. They also both learnt to cook quick easy stuff like pasta with chilli n garlic, poached eggs, microwave scrambled eggs. In summer they loved making ..what we called whizzy..which was frozen fruit, like berries or bananas, milk, bit of icing sugar...comes out like ice cream. Actually they are both amazing cooks now. Nothing like hunger to create a good cook. 😊

What a great video Stacey. I used to try and get something ready for my kids when they got home from school, in winter, a toasted sandwich or soup or sometimes both. My girls were always ravenous when they got home from school. I always had something for them to grab and eat though. I never, ever had enough freezer space to make a lot and freeze. That’s why I always made sure I made stuff each day for the kids to have, my kids would play hard and be always hungry, always ate whatever was put in front of them too and loved helping out in the kitchen as well. So did my boys too, they all learned how to cook, basic stuff anyway, they would never starve cos they could cook enough to not b3 hungry. My oldest boy does all the cooking for his family, comes home from work and cooks dinner for his wife and their 6 children and my other boy i# a chef, manages a pub and is actually now the licensee of the pub. TFS Stacey.

@@Nelsiemum I used to make sausage rolls with actual sausages rolled in pastry. They are super cheap and so delicious, everyone loves those, and mini bacon and egg 'pies' in muffin tins...you can change them up with different ingredients like chicken, cheese and onion....anything you like really as long as egg is in there to help it set. I also made muffins using homebrand cake mix and a medium size tin of fruit(what ever you like)....juice and all...mix together and bake. No egg or milk needed.

I don't think you mentioned this one, so I'll add it. When our boys were teenagers I'd make huge slow cooker meals like chilli con carne and put individual servings of leftovers with rice in takeaway containers in the freezer. They loved to pull them out and microwave them as snacks while I was at work. Now my grandkids are doing that thing where they open our fridge and say there's nothing to eat! My granddaughter loves baking with me, but she still can't understand why the fridge isn't full of bought snacks.

I was expecting you to mention your yummy looking pastry bases that you fill with egg mixture etc. I have purchased the gluten free pastry in a pack & that is as far as I have gotten! Can't rush these things!! They are something that had I known about when my kids were budding teenagers I would have mass produced as they are not only healthy but with bought pastry quick to make up. I can't think why I had never seen them made as they are far nicer than frankfurts on a stick with sauce, or even mini sausage rolls or pies, no hang on, I loved the mini meat pies by Nanna as they didn't have a lot of wasted pastry & were genuinely full of meat! But no, for some reason no one made the little bases with fillings in them!! I used to make the slices for functions & they were all snapped up so I always came home with empty containers. Same with my cakes. 😆

I am on a really tight budget currently. My go to currently is basic food like noodles as an easy go to or Easymac...but have started to make food for lunches and after school. One recipe is a muesli slice that I use about a cup of peanut butter, one tablespoon of honey, one tablespoon of coconut oil, then heat to make it runny, then add about two cups of oats, the kids are fussy so I also add cocoa to make them chocolate flavoured and add some choc chips... put it in a lined tray and put in fridge, then I slice it up and line an old tin I recycled and put them in there and pop in the fridge. I also make egg, cheese and ham bites in my muffin tin. I also use the muffin tin to make mini apple pies which are very easy with the left over apples the kids decide then no longer want to eat. I make banana bread from the old bananas, and also biscuits and cupcakes, but less often as I want healthier food for them. Thank you for sharing. I will now be looking at freezing more food because we are getting the "there is nothing to eat" on a regular basis currently....thank you for your tips.
