I really appreciate your channel and the challenge you’re doing for the year. I think incorporating sales from supermarkets would help your budget rather than spend more at the high price stores. Whatever you do, I can’t wait to see what you create. I’m in NY and I’ve learned a lot from you since I found your channel. Keep up the awesome work.
I agree I always buy the specials for example pac and save had celery, silverbeet and cabbage for 5 dollars and they were huge, they will keep me going all week
One thing that makes me like this channel is that you keep it real, like meal planning by going through the freezer and seeing what needs to be used up. "Freezer shopping" is what I call it. I also think it takes a brave or confident woman to invite others along to watch as she has a freezer clean-out. I'm pretty impressed that you didn't once stare at a package and say, "What was that?" 😜 I'd like to see your chicken and pumpkin lasagna recipe, please.
I trained as a chef in the nineties and spent more than twenty years in the profession I don't enjoy it anymore. Watching your videos and makes me a bit more inspired to cook from scratch again. I making beef stock as I wrote this because the commercial stuff is rank.
I really understand that as well. When I had my Café and catering business I lost my love for food. However, making this channel has inspired me all over again. You remind me I have beef bones in the freezer lol
Yes, commercial stock is rank.beef bone broth is yummmmm You could make heaps and freeze it for convenience. I do that.. and make chicken bone broth too.
I found my wa😊y back to the kitchen by gardening. I worked kitchens for years apox20 years. It sucks the joy of food out of you. And th.is channel h@s helped
I have a box in the freezer where all my veg offcuts and chicken bones, herb stalks etc. live. When it's full I have an almost ceremonial stock day. I love it, plus the house smells lovely afterwards too.
I completely agree with buying specials when they come up. Our UK supermarkets are this week selling certain veg at only 15p per bag, for Easter (they do it at Christmas, too) so folks will be buying it up and freezing it because you just can’t beat that price. Meat, too - lots of it is on half-price offers. Yesterday I saw one lady put six legs of lamb in her trolley! I’ve bought lamb, beef, gammon and salmon for the same reason. Makes perfect sense if you have the freezer space.
I would love to see the good deals you find at the super markets! I agree that the low spend and staying out of the super markets are hard to do together. I would love to see you chase the deals. :D With how expensive everything has gotten there's a lot of people who have never experienced having to buy things on a budget who would benefit greatly from learning how to find the good deals and buy in bulk.
Freezer filled to the brim, lots of wonderful choices. Slowly emptying mine at the moment so I can start fresh again. Love watching you plan and cook, you have great ideas. ❤❤❤
Hi Stacey, Love watching you cook and explain what you are doing. Love seeing how you use your leftovers and cookikng on the cheep. Would love to see your weekly cooking timelapsed into one video plus if you have time to put up the full vids of ALL your meals maybe 2-3 in one video with small editing during the week. Cant wait to see your gardening videos as well. Thankyou for all the things you teach us and all the little hints and tips along the way. Your Aussy friend CJ.
Great to see that others rummage through the freezer tte same way I do! I love seeing how you take your fridge/freezer contents and throw it all together and come up with something to feed your family. Money is needing to stretch further and further during these tight financial times. It would be good to see how you are able to keep to $5000 for the years groceries, this is a reality for so handy families at the moment. Life is all over the place most of the time! The way you run your videos help us to feel are not alone!
@FarmersWifeHomestead As a vegetarian, I'd love to see some vegetarian dishes. Or dishes where the meat is optional... I'm in my 60s, live alone, have a veggie patch, and spend around $50/wk on groceries. I only go shopping once a month, for the same reason as you: I'd spend more! I've built up a good pantry basis and shop my pantry and freezers. I keep track of what I've used. Even though the prices have gone up, my shopping bills have only gone up a little... Because I've got plenty in my pantry, I can wait for things to go on special. I make my own bread, yoghurt, freeze grated cheese, onions and garlic, and make jams, chutneys and marmalades... I also cook big meals and freeze portions for easy dinners. For me, the no shopping challenge AND shopping the specials in different shops, makes sense... It is SO NICE to hear a kiwi accent on YT! So good to see you potter in your typical Kiwi kitchen, with your old stove, similar to my own, your lovely aprons (I'm an apron fan!) and watching you cook normal meals, without frills... AND without the jolly long nails that seem to be a must these days...! Thank you for a refreshing new channel! 🎉✨️
I think sticking to your $5,000 budget should be your main aim, wherever you shop. The trap, as you have said, is going to the supermarket and not overspending, which happens to all of us. I have the same peeler and love it, it's years old. I also followed your advice and froze 2kg of onions. I can see that it's going to save me lots of time when I am cooking dinner. I went to my local asian supermarket yesterday and they had a 10kg bag of red onions for $20. That's much cheaper than the supermarket.
You are in your element when you’re in the kitchen, that Fritata looked so good! I love how you can turn the most random ingredients into something so exciting and tasty. You’re like the kiwi Martha Stuart I love it lol
I came across your videos because I like to watch people cook, and it gives me inspiration to come up with ideas, I have a learning disability and severe mental health, I am also type 2 diabetic so coming up with meal ideas is very hard and difficult for me, my father is borderline diabetic he has a very sweet tooth so trying to get him to not have too much sweet stuff is very difficult, I live with my father who I love to bits and was in hospital just over a month ago with Pneumonia he was only in hospital for 6 days thank god ,as I did not cope well with my father in hospital, in the last month I’ve not been well myself I’ve had a lot of stress and it really came out of me, I am on the mend now and feeling more myself, I myself love to bake, I’ve made homemade apple pies, I’ve not tried them but my dad had a few last night so far I think they are ok, can you please make longer videos on how to get the best out of everything, I live in the uk but I do have family in Australia, I don’t know them that well
Thank you for your message. I really hope you and your Dad feel better very soon. You must be so close and it is so lovely you live together to help each other. Thank you for watching and take care. Stacey
I'm really excited to see the freezer meals video. Regarding not shopping at the supermarket - I think it makes more sense to follow the low budget challenge, and where that means avoiding the supermarket then it makes sense, but when things are actually cheaper at the supermarket I think exceptions should definitely be made. The leftovers of that chinese noodles dish look so yummy! I'd love to see how you cook that next time you make it.
Hey Stacey, love the fridge clean up. My little freezer was chockablock two weeks ago and I finally cleaned it up. My 2cents is I reackon you should chase the supermarket specials. Im with you and blinkin flies, I also chase them out the window. Enjoy your holiday!!!
I only shop specials and buy eggs and beef from the farmer and make everything from scratch so would like to see those types of meals and freezer meals
Love to see the pan fried chicken. Re shopping- go for specials but be strong and don’t fall into shops trap of getting you to buy other stuff while there
@@FarmersWifeHomestead Thank you! Looking forward to viewing that, especially as pumpkins are so cheap here in NZ at the moment. Have a good Easter weekend!
I’m so glad I found you and your videos. They’re so inspiring! I live alone so preparing and cooking for one is so difficult. However, you are giving me lots of ideas. Many thanks ❤
I love that you had the challenge to stay out of the supermarket, because I think you showed that a person CAN shop more local and avoid the large conglomerates. On this aspect, perhaps you can challenge yourself to use adverts and circulars to shop the deals, go in to larger supermarket for those deals, and come out with just those deals 😂 In this way, you can keep in your budget which I think is the ultimate goal, get good food in a financially and socially responsible way. By the way, you have spurred me to challenge myself in using what I have, not letting things spoil, using every last bit. I was given apples that just were not the best tasting fresh, so I washed them really well, cored them, made apple sauce with cinnamon and sugar, even steam canned 4 pints! I used my food mill to remove the peels, dried the peels in a low oven. My family was eating it like fruit leather, but I saved half of it, and made about 1/2 cup apple peel powder that I can use to add to desserts to add apple flavor or thicken apple or blueberry pie. The cores I am using to make apple cider vinegar. Not a thing went to waste! You did that, Stacey, inspired me to do better with what I had. Sorry so long, just had to tell you my thoughts❤
Hey Stacey! You’ve given us all some great ideas and inspiration to do better on our food budgets! Go for the lowest cost… actually, it does go hand in hand. A savings, is money left in our pockets… We’ll take that anyway we can! 🤗
You so should. A new month is about to start, so a great time to start keeping a note of all your food receipts and it will surprise you where you can start to save.
Definitely look for the best deals! Wherever they may be. Maybe you will come a ways under your 5000 budget. That would be great. Wishing you much luck.
I think you should stick to the low budget. If something is lower cost at a supermarket it makes sense to go there. Loving your content. Hi from Wellington 👋
Stacey, I have taken to getting my groceries delivered. It stops me impulse buying and makes me stick to my list Because I spend under $200 on a fortnightly shop I pay $14 for delivery- 16kms from the supermarket- and for my shopping to be done for me Over $200 would cost $10 for delivery. Saves me fuel and time. I buy the odd bit of fruit from the fruit and vege guy in our nearby village and I preserve all the fruit from our own orchard, bake most of our own bread and fill the tins.
That sounds amazing! A great way to stay within your budget. I'm too far out for delivery but I will pop into the SM once a fortnight to check for any good deals. Thanks for your thoughts on it.
My poor vegetable garden, with the storms, yard flooding rain, then 40c heat in between has really destroyed my poor garden.. may have saved 2 tomatoe plants and an eggplant.. but not the grass, weeds, have almost buried my small raised beds l made around 6 months ago..lol.. so will wait for cooler weather and try again.. Just love all your wonderful ideas for feeding the family.. And supermarkets are a money trap..l try to avoid them
I think a low spend - just find the best prices where ever they are. Also I'm a kiwi in Aus & just love seeing things from home and always am learning something to make my home/cooking/budget better even over here
Saving money would be my priority over which shop I use. Because its Easter I bought a 2 kilo leg of lamb for just under 20 dollars from Pak n Save this week. I will cook my mum and dad a roast on Sunday with all the trimmings for about nine dollars a head. Not all that much more than I would typically spend for a nutrinally balanced main meal that includes meat or fish in an ordinary week.
The low spend is more important to me than a no supermarket challenge, what you can do on a budget in NZ right now is incredible. Plus today's video has prompted me to visit my deep freeze and see what it's hiding lol 😅😅
With a recession happening, I'd lean into keeping the budget low, especially if you do not feel financially secure. By the way, you inspired me to dig through my freezer. I have a loaf of papaya and coconut bread in the oven. Hoping it comes out!
I will most definitely still try to keep my low budget, I really like the challenge of pushing myself to have a small budget. Also, that bread sounds delicious!
Chase the specials but only if the items are needed not just because they are on special…maybe keep a separate budget for specials and one as your grocery challenge
Ive used the lemon and peppercorn butter with chicken and also used in a roux for a white sauce. I've been using the back grater on the grater and grating cheese on that and it def makes the cheese go further.
you need to implement your budget with all the specials you can afford for your cooking needs i am always for any specials that are going to enhance you cooking you go girl
I would say stick to your budget but include shopping at the supermarkets for specials, When I was in the Waikato I used to shop at all 3 supermarkets, I would go online at the beginning of the week and work out who had what on special. The vege shops aren't always the best, even though cheaper, because I found the fruit and veges would go off quicker, so unless you had time to preserve them somehow they would often go to waste. I've now started my own garden, living in the Far North and would love to see more of how you grow your veges. I had a bumper crop of pumpkins so will be freezing and pureeing those. I found for making soup and puree I just chop it up, remove the seeds and boil till soft. When it is cool enough to go in the blender I remove the plasticky skin so I lose hardly any flesh at all and it is easy to peel off.
Thanks for your ideas on this. I just harvested the pumpkins today so might do some more puree up as well. Great tip about the pumpkins, thank you for that.
@FarmersWifeHomestead I also tried recipe for chocolate mousse made out of pumpkin. Just boil the pumpkin, drain, add either shaved chocolate or melting choc bits, stir till chocolate has melted into hot pumpkin, then blitz with blender stick, put in container and place in fridge. Eat when cold, honestly you'd never know it was made with pumpkin. The recipe used butternut but I just used a crown pumpkin. My husband loved it, think I will be making more pumpkin mousse than soup this year 🤣
Honestly just go by your budget and go into the supermarket if it’s cheaper. Chase those specials 😉 Also I love your baskets in the freezer! I’m going to do this too. ❤
My mom makes an asparagus tart. Sheet of puff pastry, dock a 1 inch border all around leaving bare. The inside rectangle brish with Dijon. Lay asparagus out to cover, top with with gruyere or parmesan or aged white cheddar, bake as directed for the puff pastry. Cut in little squares. So delicious for an appetizer
I love it! A real kiwi kitchen with real kiwi ideas. You have an awesome presentation style, I feel like you’re talking just to me 😊 Ignore the haters and keep up the great work! Arohanui from Christchurch ❤️🥰🇳🇿
Your freezer looks like minevtoo. Lol. Im in cambridge, just had to make plum conc...no added anything... steam canned it after watching you stam canning. I needed the room because i went and bought a whole rump for 10.99 kg at countdown/WW.. Get specials when they pop up, i say. I think you should shop smart... including the supermarkets, but you have to balance best buy vs quality. Lol. I think we all may have to form our own Canners/ Preservers AA... for over buying specials.. got to be smart about that too. I shop across all supermarkets in town here, vege fresh, butcher (as apporpriate), farmers market, trade kyvexcess, give away bumper crops...mostly. . I grow lots.. can my harvest to save whats left and so on. I work at eating everthing i grow or buy... otherwise im just throwing my money away. Id love to see how you manage your budget. PS. I made your canned pineapple, no sugar. Its So much nicer than any commercial tins.
Thanks for your thoughts on this. lol at the AA comment, it's so true. As they say though only grow/preserve what you eat. It sounds like we shop very similarly
Your freezers are just like mine... a treasure trove! Tomorrow I MUST defrost my upright freezer that lives in the "office" that's not really an office. Yes, flys drive me nuts. I miss my cat Karma, she used to hunt them. My new cat doesn't seem to bother. It's hard to find good help these days. Looking forward to more videos, love your channel!!
Hahaha yes, it is sometimes hard to find good help. My dog loves to get them and I've taught her to leave the bees alone by saying no they are spicy hahaha
For me personally, it would be more important to me to go where it's cheaper. Groceries are so expensive these days. I agree it would be hard to get both challenges to work together. I would do what works best for you. The food looks delicious. Great ideas for using up foods.
Just in my kitchen here in the north of U.K..watching your vlog as I'm cooking..and I had the same leftover puff pastry sitting in the fridge..and hey presto you made cinnamon swirls..what a great idea..mine are cooking as I write this..💐..big thanks for that inspiration..💐x
Hi Stacey, Since Pac n Slave and Woolies are two mins apart (in Anzac Parade) you could grab the real specials from both, that is if you have the stamina.
Mate I would love to get in your freezer and organize it. You need to store like with like ie. Meat in one basket vege in another basket bread on another etc it would be easier for you to check on what you have. Just a suggestion that I hope might help you ❤
I’d also like to watch you shop the deals to keep it affordable, whether that’s at the supermarket or other places.
Ok thanks for letting me know your thoughts on it.
I agree. For me, it’s better that you try and get the best deals around and keep to your low budget challenge.
At the start of the week so we can get the same deals lol
Yes def being kiwi this would be sooo cool!
I'm so glad to see that you do not throw out things that are slightly freezer burned. A lot of people are afraid of anything that has Frost around it but it can be put into something and made delicious
I try to use everything that I can, it has to be beyond help for me to throw to the piggies.
I came here to say the same if it tastes good il eat it😊
In our household, we cover the freezer burned food with lovely sauces 😂😅
I'm hoping I'll quit wasting from watching you, if it even resembles freezer burn I throw it out😭

I agree too. I think we all have to juggle our tactics to get the best results.
Would love to keep seeing you shop the deals to keep it cheap, even if it is at the super market occasionally.
Thanks for your thoughts on this, I appreciate it!
Yes me too
Yes, that would be shopping as we all do. Wherever that gets the better price.
I really enjoy your channel!!! With the high cost for food I think you should get the deals when you can. That way makes the most sense to me.

You so should. A new month is about to start, so a great time to start keeping a note of all your food receipts and it will surprise you where you can start to save.
I’d like to see you shop where its most affordable to keep to the budget
I always freeze butter when it’s on sale and cheese blocks! I have two freezers like you, completely filled!
Hi Stacey
I’ve just made you Easter choc cups buns with my grandson. Thanks for the recipe .
Outstanding success
Happy Easter to all 🐰🐣
Thank you! You too, I am so pleased the buns worked out well for you
Definitely look for the best deals! Wherever they may be. Maybe you will come a ways under your 5000 budget. That would be great. Wishing you much luck.
I think you should stick to the low budget. If something is lower cost at a supermarket it makes sense to go there. Loving your content. Hi from Wellington 👋
The supermarket is ot necessarily your enemy...it's about spending less and staying on budget
Inspirational, Practical and thrifty. Well done ! Thank you for your ideas . Hope you recover well .
Stacey, I have taken to getting my groceries delivered. It stops me impulse buying and makes me stick to my list
Because I spend under $200 on a fortnightly shop I pay $14 for delivery- 16kms from the supermarket- and for my shopping to be done for me
Over $200 would cost $10 for delivery.
That's not a bad idea, actually!
That is a great price and I hope you have a lovely meal with your parents. Happy Easter
@@FarmersWifeHomestead Thanks and same to you and yours.
The low spend is more important to me than a no supermarket challenge, what you can do on a budget in NZ right now is incredible. Plus today's video has prompted me to visit my deep freeze and see what it's hiding lol 😅😅
Thanks for sharing! I agree and GO YOU! I hope you found some great ideas.
I'd love to see anything you cook for tea this week. At the end how much your freezer has emptied 😁
I'm interested to see the pumpkin chicken lasagne please, sounds delish, & anything else you do with your freezer goods 🤗
Yum! Can I move in? Your meal ideas sound delicious 🤤😘
I always have to go thru my tiny freezer and incorporate the contents into meals. Great Video! 🇦🇺🐨🐨
I would love to see the pumpkin chicken lasagna please !
Thanks!
Thank you so much for your super thanks, I will put this towards the PO Box fund. It really is appreciated.
Hi Stacey, You inspire me on every video you put out. Am going thru some older videos' and am just addicted to them all.
The lemon pepper butter with the asparagus would be delicious.
Shop the specials Stacey! When food you use is half price makes sense to stock up! Love your show
Chase the specials but only if the items are needed not just because they are on special…maybe keep a separate budget for specials and one as your grocery challenge
Ive used the lemon and peppercorn butter with chicken and also used in a roux for a white sauce.
I've been using the back grater on the grater and grating cheese on that and it def makes the cheese go further.
Great idea in the white sauce :-)
you need to implement your budget with all the specials you can afford for your cooking needs i am always for any specials that are going to enhance you cooking you go girl
Thanks for that. I think I will try to find the bargains
My husband loved it, think I will be making more pumpkin mousse than soup this year 🤣
Love watching your videos! Have binge watched them all. I’d really like to see the chicken pumpkin lasagna- that sounds really delicious! ❤
ok, I will do a video of it. We can make the recipe up together :-)
Chase the specials so you can stick to your budget
Honestly just go by your budget and go into the supermarket if it’s cheaper. Chase those specials 😉
Also I love your baskets in the freezer! I’m going to do this too. ❤
I think shop wherever is cheapest, that's what most people would do in a similar challenge.
I would like to see the pan fried chicken with the pepper sauce, just love watching you, cinnamon rolls look delish thank you xx
Definitely go for those specials!
That is awesome! YUM
❤❤❤❤❤ From South Africa 🇿🇦 ❤
I’d go for the specials as well, just found your channel and thoroughly enjoyed enjoying your chatting as you work, all the best from over the ditch.
Hi Stacey! Your freezer looks like mine! Hahaha! 💜Could you show us how to make the grain bread?
Yes I can I will add it to the list ;-)
Just shop at the supermarket when there is a good special, otherwise keep away 😀
Loved this video this recipe looks so yummy I sure will begiving it a try. Your recipies are all so great, keep up the wonderful videos . Rosemary
I love it! A real kiwi kitchen with real kiwi ideas. You have an awesome presentation style, I feel like you’re talking just to me 😊 Ignore the haters and keep up the great work! Arohanui from Christchurch ❤️🥰🇳🇿
Loved it, you look awesome in that Blue ! Hope you and your Family had a lovely Easter 🌹🌹
Thank you! You too!
I’d love to see your pumpkin lasagna recipe please 🙏🏻 p.s. your an inspiration 🥰❤️
I made it yesterday and it will be here first thing tomorrow. Its divine!
Totally following and inspired by the supermarket thingee ... but it's the low spend chase the specials that mean the most
Your freezer looks like minevtoo.
Thanks so much for your thoughts on this. So nice to still see you in the comments :-)
I really enjoy your content; I've learned so much and I get some really good ideas from you, not to mention that you're a sweet lady
Love your video
LOL you chasing the the fly out at the end reminds me very much of my Kiwi nan!
😁 I just had to keep that in as the flies are such a talking point lol
Personally I like to see you shop the deals and cook on a budget even it means going to a supermarket, 😍
Hi Stacey, Since Pac n Slave and Woolies are two mins apart (in Anzac Parade) you could grab the real specials from both, that is if you have the stamina.
Chicken pumpkin lasagna have never imagined that always see pumkin as a sweet thing like pie or muffins so seeing what you do with that would be fun.
Mate I would love to get in your freezer and organize it. You need to store like with like ie. Meat in one basket vege in another basket bread on another etc it would be easier for you to check on what you have. Just a suggestion that I hope might help you ❤
I reckon shop the cheapest and I would love to see the chicken pumpkin lasagna!❤
It will be uploaded first thing tomorrow :-)
Hi just came across your channel found it helpful and see how others live and budget, my sister lives in Keri Keri New Zealand she loves it 🇬🇧
