  • Hello and welcome back to the channel. Today we finally make the red onion fridge pickles you ahve been asking for. Its super easy and the recipe will be below. We also start some mustard and we will soak them for a few days and finish it in the next video.
    Red Onion Fridge Pickles
2 large red onions peeled and sliced
1 part warm water to 2 parts vinegar
2 Tbs sugar or Honey but not necessary
    Pickling spice
or any other spices you like. I also used celery seeds and dill
Dissolve the sugar in the warm water top the onions off with vinegar to cover
pop into the fridge and they are good for a few months.
Depending on the size of your jars you may need less or more liquid. Just have a taste of the liquid for your preferences. As long as it is at least one to two parts vinegar.

Stacy - Hello there - It has been a bit since leaving a comment. Apologies for that. I see you have racked up a nice number of subscribers. Well done, there. I must say your videos are just getting better and better. Another well done for you. So sorry to hear that things are a bit harried your way and things are causing you to be a bit stressed. It is easy for someone else to say it will get better when what has you stressed may not be an easy burden to carry. Understood. Thus, it is hoped that all will resolve and life gets smoother with each day.
It must be said that we are most envious of your jars down under. Here in the states, at least in this neck of the woods, we do not see that shape of the short wide-mouth jars as well as the name Agee (my g-ma's maiden name) for the taller jar, in this neck of the woods either. It has been noted that in other parts of the world, there are much nicer jar shapes and more interesting types, designs, and colors of lids.
I will have a gander and see what can be sussed up on line.
Can't wait to try the fridge red onions. Looks decadent. From your recipe; sounds a bit like sweet and sour onions with the exception of the pickling spices to make them just as you mentioned.
Never thought of making our own mustard. We will have to give that a go for certain.
Thank you for all of your lovely videos. Keep up the good recipes and know you are much appreciated and glad to be one of your earliest subscribers.
Take a breath - you got this. If you need to take a little break - do it. We will be here when you catch your breath. Everyone needs a break, here and there - don't put worries about us out here and ether land. We will still be here.
As for those who give you grief in the comments. You are taking the right stance. Shake them off and keep going. If I see any, I will stand up for you.
    Have a blessed day.

I remember that one of the things I mentioned was my jealousy of your beautiful long blond locks as we are both the same age and what I didn’t mention is that I sport a VERY short and VERY ‘platinum’ white pixie cut which I also enjoy BUT what I wanted to mention noticing today that I’ve failed to notice before and don’t know how I haven’t is how blue your eyes are today! I see you do bulk spices. I did the maths. Those little boxes from the supermarket when scaled up are 68-100 dollars a kg!! Gilmours stuff averages about 20 a kg and even real ceylonese cinnamon instead of supermarket cassia is only 50 or 60 a kg if you shop around and buy by the 500gm bag or 1kg bag. Definitely worth it .

    • @FarmersWifeHomestead
      @FarmersWifeHomestead  3 месяца назад +1

Funny you should mention that because that's what I thought it was and have always called it a spice berry. However, when I read the back with you guys it didn't say all spice. Hmm interesting

@@FarmersWifeHomestead I have emptied what remains of an almost empty packet I had left over, and I’m certain it’s allspice. It looks and smells like it, my packet doesn’t have it written on the back either, but I think it’s a misprint or omission.
My mother used to make her own pickling spice and I know allspice was most definitely one of the ingredients and I also thought she actually added mustard seeds to hers. Sadly, it was one of the many recipes/mixes that she didn’t write down, but then again a lot of those recipes often differed each year depending on what was at hand and/or available.

Thanks Stacey. I have just finished making the depression era salad. Its delicious. Won't last long in the fridge! The mustard is superb. I'm amazed. I'll never buy it again. Thank you. I'm not much of a cook but even I managed to pull this off with your help. Much love to you and your family. xx

Stacey I watched this a while ago and there is only me, I used to make picked onions etc but it was to much for one. Thank you so much for this, I have now pickled onion in my fridge, I just do one onion with some pepper in a jam jar. Works brilliantly. Thank you so much for the idea. Keep them coming.

So glad to see you feeling better! I'm going to try the red onion pickles soon. I make a cauliflower pickle in a brine of water, sugar, white vinegar and turmeric. It turns them the most beautiful yellow! Looking forward to seeing the completion of the mustard. TFS!

Lol, this reminds me of my mum in the 60's who annually made a preserve with onions. Maybe it was pickled onions or something similar I can't remember. But I do remember having to vacate our house because of the smell. Strong? Heck it was like tear gas. Spent the whole day playing over at the neighbours then went home at tea time when most of the smell had gone. 😂😂😂

I love pimento aka allspice too. It goes with so many things, I have about 1/4 to 1/3 in with my peppercorns. I even use it for salads. Yum! It’s nice to hear a fellow kiwi on social media and so sorry you got flak. But they’re probably jelly az so brush them off. Cheers and good on you for being brave.
