Looking forward to seeing how this challenge goes!We are a family of 5 in south Otago and are lucky to have Chickens and a big garden but that doesn't always go to plan...what a sad summer we're having! Great video : )
Thanks for watching- oh I am so tempted to get chickens or ducks, I just can't shake the travel bug and commit to more animals! I hope we can all get through this crazy weather! Apart from leafy greens and courgette's it's looking pretty grim. I am hopeful that we'll have a late spell of lovely weather and all will come right!
Hello from Australia. I always put the purchase date on my groceries, It’s helpful because I know how long things last , So I know how much to store or buy going forward Sometimes I put an opened date if it’s something like washing powder . For something like long life milk I put 1 of 5 , or 2 of 5 kind of thing , I know how much I’m using . I find I have a good idea of what things cost but agree a price book would be great To start with I am taking a photo of receipts . I’m thinking more often what things I can make myself, Perhaps you could make your own dry onion soup mix ? I portion and freeze cheese to divide it out over time . The other thing I find helpful is to use a measuring cup or spoon . I use a 1/3 cup in oats I divide out serves of yogurt Because certain family members would eat a whole tub . If I’m cooking frozen veg I allow a 1/4 cup per person. 1/2 cup of milk with cereal . Same with having small snack size bowls , I also have fairly small dinner plate sizes , It’s not about restricting food , It’s about not wasting. I also use a pump bottle for dish detergent and use 2 squirts . It’s all habits and might seem picky But little things add up and it makes a difference over time . I’m also on a restricted budget And have to stretch and budget wherever I can Good luck on your challenge !
Thanks for all those really good ideas! I agree portioning things out/hiding stuff makes it last longer! I definitely need to get a pump bottle for dish liquid- we all squirt the bottle like mad! The date opened is also a stroke of genius- that’s a great way to know how much you’re using and how much you need to stock up😀👍🙌
Solution to remembering prices - a price book. Cath Armstrong (Cheapskates Club Australia) and a range of other frugal living people explain how to do this.
Great video! I would think it's a bit easier to do a bigger shop but less often now with a car? Your budget will get a boost once the garden starts to produce and you can eat what you're growing. I agree it seems a bit crazy that we grow so much food right here, but pay as much as the export prices. I don't think it's the farmers getting rich though.
Oh absolutely- it's the blimmin supermarkets getting rich- no one else!! Yes, heaps easier to a bigger shop with the car but I'm mostly sticking to the bike. I am on the look out for a bike trailer though to help me out with the bigger things- like dog biscuits and large tins of dog food. Thanks for watching :-)
I can't believe it. We literally have a similar budget, and I, too, am swapping to quarterly budgets this year. With once a month big shop. Great minds think alike, hey!! I look forward to seeing how you go. ❤
Hey, nice to have you over here :-) Yes, great minds think alike :-). Unfortunately I don't have your prowess in the kitchen BUT I live in hope of constant improvement. Fingers crossed this quarterly thing works out.... we'll either feel very flush or very skint- only time will tell my friend!
I always new ideas that challenge my thinking. I’ve been working thru your idea of a quarterly amount rather than a weekly. I give myself 15 per week. It only works because I have a good pantry. You’ve given me food for thought 😂. Thanks
Savvy shopping 😊and a good store cupboard stock up. Yes, keep a check on prices. French onion soup powder mixed with cream cheese used to be popular in Australia 😊🇦🇺 Do you have Aldi in NZ? Best of luck with staying within your budget 👍🇦🇺 Interesting video ✔️
Hey, thanks for watching :-) Oh I hadn't heard of cream cheese and soup mix- that could be good though for sandwich spreads aye. I'm not sure if Aldi is here or not..? Definitely not in the city that I live in. Do you find it better priced than other grocery shops? I see American video's that mention it a lot.
@ Aldi is very good for prices and popular in Oz. Overall their stock is Aldi brands but fine. Hopefully they cross the ditch to NZ. Over local supermarkets have had their good shake up with Aldi’s arrival.👍🇦🇺
I enjoyed watching. Im a kiwi but now living in Australia, 2 years,so i am interested in prices there still. I think a lot of the prices arent too bad. I used to write in a notebook my regular basics and then just pop it in my bag,so when i was at the supermarket i could compare.😊
Thanks for watching😀 I always find food generally cheaper in Oz but it could just be because I’m in holiday mode BUT wine and chocolate is crazy expensive but cheap as chips here!
I’ve been wondering if it would be quicker to pick the tomatoes and have them ripen inside on the windowsill!! It’s been a shocker of a summer. We currently have plenty of carrots and courgettes ready though. I managed to get some of the sausage meat bungs last weekend for that great price. They also have bulk bags of cooked chicken and bacon bits which are great to freeze in smaller bags to add to dishes.
I know, I was wondering the same and then it would encourage more growth too... but mine are so very green I thought perhaps they might be too early... Sausage meat BUNGS.. that's what they are called :-) (Thanks) !! My daughter loves to make sausage rolls so I was a bit bummed to miss out on that- the early bird catches the worm and all that- I'll be more on to it next day I'm going to go shopping!
I MISS onion dip so much, splash of malt vinegar/lemon juice - delicious. French Onion dip is an okay substitute in the states but I long for Maggi onion soup dip!
Hi Jenni :-) If you come back for a holiday you'll have to stock up on Maggi onion soup! I love it too. I did see though in the supermarket that they had a little stash of other packet soups next to the reduced cream and were trying to "encourage" the use of these too- I'm a purist though so it's only onion soup for me :-)
I meat shop at the butcher's and fruit and veg from their store but while I'm shopping I check the prices at the supermarkets with the grocer app to compare prices
I have a price book, keep notes of main ingredient prices from the supermarkets I use. Examples of this is explained by the Cheapskates club or Dining on a dime, both on Utube. Im in NZ.
Thanks for that idea and the channel ideas too! sounds like a good way to do it- crazy that super market shopping is becoming as complicated as this now ! Thanks for watching 🙌👍
Oops, my original comment was for the previous video i was watching. So deleted. Im new to your channel, RUclips recommended your video & Im glad I have found you. I want to save money. Wish I had factory shops near me. How many are in your family? 4? Guesding from the title, are your family young kids, or bigger tummies? I have a family of 4, two grown kids. Curious to know if $1000 a quarter could work for our family.
Hi Mel :-) Welcome! Yes we are a family of 4- Mum, Dad, a teenage boy and teenage girl. My boy has a never ending pit of a stomach so am constantly looking at ways to fill him up on good, healthy food, so I'd say he eats more than average, the rest of us eat an average amount. Yes, 2025 is the year of money saving I reckon- let us know on here how you are going!
@nzmoneykarma Yesterday I canceled many Google Playstore subscriptions & soon to cancel our Sky account. Glad to have ~$150 back in account next month.
Hehe, I’m not sure really how much we use, that was a very random guess- they are just normal tubes. I’ll have to take better note next time we start a new one😀
Yes please to a pantry tour. Thank you!
Yes, I'll add that to my next food shop video so you have an idea about what's in the store cupboard to draw on 🙂

Im from Australia and I do a similar dip with the french onion soup mix, i do it with cream cheese and sour cream. Others just do sour cream.
I’ve never tried cream cheese in mine but I reckon that would be yummy! Thanks for watching :-)
