Hello from Australia. I always put the purchase date on my groceries, It’s helpful because I know how long things last , So I know how much to store or buy going forward Sometimes I put an opened date if it’s something like washing powder . For something like long life milk I put 1 of 5 , or 2 of 5 kind of thing , I know how much I’m using . I find I have a good idea of what things cost but agree a price book would be great To start with I am taking a photo of receipts . I’m thinking more often what things I can make myself, Perhaps you could make your own dry onion soup mix ? I portion and freeze cheese to divide it out over time . The other thing I find helpful is to use a measuring cup or spoon . I use a 1/3 cup in oats I divide out serves of yogurt Because certain family members would eat a whole tub . If I’m cooking frozen veg I allow a 1/4 cup per person. 1/2 cup of milk with cereal . Same with having small snack size bowls , I also have fairly small dinner plate sizes , It’s not about restricting food , It’s about not wasting. I also use a pump bottle for dish detergent and use 2 squirts . It’s all habits and might seem picky But little things add up and it makes a difference over time . I’m also on a restricted budget And have to stretch and budget wherever I can Good luck on your challenge !

Thanks for all those really good ideas! I agree portioning things out/hiding stuff makes it last longer! I definitely need to get a pump bottle for dish liquid- we all squirt the bottle like mad! The date opened is also a stroke of genius- that’s a great way to know how much you’re using and how much you need to stock up😀👍🙌

Oops, my original comment was for the previous video i was watching. So deleted. Im new to your channel, RUclips recommended your video & Im glad I have found you. I want to save money. Wish I had factory shops near me. How many are in your family? 4? Guesding from the title, are your family young kids, or bigger tummies? I have a family of 4, two grown kids. Curious to know if $1000 a quarter could work for our family.

Hi Mel :-) Welcome! Yes we are a family of 4- Mum, Dad, a teenage boy and teenage girl. My boy has a never ending pit of a stomach so am constantly looking at ways to fill him up on good, healthy food, so I'd say he eats more than average, the rest of us eat an average amount. Yes, 2025 is the year of money saving I reckon- let us know on here how you are going!

@ Aldi is very good for prices and popular in Oz. Overall their stock is Aldi brands but fine. Hopefully they cross the ditch to NZ. Over local supermarkets have had their good shake up with Aldi’s arrival.👍🇦🇺

I’ve been wondering if it would be quicker to pick the tomatoes and have them ripen inside on the windowsill!! It’s been a shocker of a summer. We currently have plenty of carrots and courgettes ready though. I managed to get some of the sausage meat bungs last weekend for that great price. They also have bulk bags of cooked chicken and bacon bits which are great to freeze in smaller bags to add to dishes.

Great video! I would think it's a bit easier to do a bigger shop but less often now with a car? Your budget will get a boost once the garden starts to produce and you can eat what you're growing. I agree it seems a bit crazy that we grow so much food right here, but pay as much as the export prices. I don't think it's the farmers getting rich though.

    • @nzmoneykarma

This is always such a lovely surprise at Christmas they give you a substantial bonus and also mine gave me an extra $15 to spend in store in December. I think I had only loaded about $100 on this year, so not a bad return!

Really great gifts! I’m sure the kids will love them. What are their ages out of curiosity? The teens in my life want such over the top things. My kids are still small (5 and 2) but I worry about the pressures as they get older. I guess ultimately we are in charge of our family values :)

Hi, mine are 13 and 15. I thinking having homeschooled them up until this year helped us as there were less external pressures and we just hung out with people who had a similar family culture😀. I think so much of it is how you bring them up though- my no. 1 tip is get the traditions embedded and then they become the most exciting thing about Xmas!

Wishing you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a good recovery to your husband after surgery. Thanks for sharing your methods, it's great to see another perspective. An FYI, it has been our experience that living costs ( uni accomodation, food ) are about double what the fees are, at least in Auckland and Wellington.

Merry Christmas to you too! I am hoping my kids will study in ChCh and keep some of those other costs down. It’s definitely more expensive than I originally thought though. Thanks for your insights- did your kids use the halls in their first year?

    • @braddawnsandleback971

@@nzmoneykarma yes, halls in first two years for one ( covid made halls the better choice), first year only for the other. Both keen to flat after that, which is less expensive overall, but the lease goes all year round.

I live in the middle of the US (Nebraska) and our butter prices are typically around $6 a pound at stores like Walmart, but with Christmas coming I've been getting it on sale at other grocery stores as low as $1.99 ib.

Hi, thanks for taking time to comment. That’s a great deal- I heard from another US based subscriber that the baking bits and bobs go on sale this time of year- for us it’s the opposite, they put it up! I think it’s because we only have two supermarket companies and they agree not to compete…🤷‍♀️

Hi, I’m not much of a cook so we keep it pretty simple. We’ve had a vege curry this week, I made a mince pie and a risotto. I’m trying to buy on sale so I always have stores in the pantry. Have you come across “cheaper ways nz” and “farmers wife homestead”? Both have really good recipes and break down the costs.😀

We budget $200 a week for food (similar sized family) and also shop at Pak n Save. We do grow a small amount of our own food, have fruit trees and chickens. Nice to see similar content to us by Kiwi's on YT - The people need to be educated in frugality and personal finance. Home takeaways are the best and save a fortune (and the portion sizes are usually more appropriate) ! :)

@@nzmoneykarma - Super expensive. We can get some decent "Steakhouse Fries" for $3.50 (1kg) + some semi-OK Pams Hoki Fillets for under $7. A bit of bread and butter, some Watties tomato sauce and a 1.25 litre fizzy drink from the supermarket and now we're talking around $12-$13 for a takeaway night. Merry Christmas! Quite jealous of your ability to buy all that cream in one container. I remember canned fruit salad being a HUGE treat in our house, very rare, and yes scoring the cherry was amazing, a win over my sisters! Here in the States baking season means everything baking related goes on sale - I stock up big time on ingredients then. And have to hid the extra bags of chocolate chips because...... 😜 I'll be hunting out a leg of lamb (mostly likely from Australia - ☹- it is hard to find NZ lamb here) for Christmas day, most of our vegetables come from a local CSA so I shouldn't have to buy anything but the meat. Enjoy the holidays and all the good food! May your days be filled with laughter and love. ❤

You've done a good job with the budget for Christmas! We spend a bit more for our vegan and gluten free family members, but are lucky enough to have multiple well producing fruit trees ( apricots, avos, but same as you the peaches, plums and nectarines not quite ready yet). Have already put several boxes of strawberries from the garden in the freezer and fresh still coming so on Christmas, we won't have stood in line at the local berry shop. The hens are also doing their part producing eggs for us. This all still requires some investment in care, chicken feed, plants etc, but feels awesome to walk past it at the grocery store because I've grown my own. Merry Christmas, enjoy your time with family and friends. From Hawkes Bay, Dawn
