This popped up in my feed for some reason. I kept watching because of the Kiwi accent, but subscribed because of the recipes and your genuine communication with your watchers. Don't be concerned about your occasional silence when trying to think of the right word; this reminds so much of my own Scottish mum who would gab away at us while she was cooking. I am 72 years old now, and mum has been gone many years, but you brought back many happy memories.
Hi, it is the 83 yo Australian living in Sweden again. After looking at your video, I made 4 rings from tin cans for my first batch of crumpets. You only could describe them as being a disaster, batter too thick, too much batter in the rings, pan too hot, rings not greased enough, etc etc. After messing up the first lot (they were eaten anyway), I corrected the above faults for the second lot and got 12 delicious crumpets, or at least in my eye they were since I have not had a crumpet for 25 years. Thank you for your detailed instructions, that made all the difference. And just to upset some of your readers, the only way to eat crumpets is to toast, butter and slather them with either Vegemite or Jam.

I’m 56 and from the UK. Loved the video. I don’t like sweet toppings on crumpets, usually I have them with butter if I add a topping then it’s either pate, marmite or primula cheese on top. My guilty pleasure though is crumpet pizza, toasted crumpet, butter, ketchup and a slice of cheddar. Then pop under a grill (or for me the air fryer as our grill doesn’t work) until the cheese melts. Not for everyone but I love it when I need a comfort lunch.

If I can just share a tip, from the days when internet didn't exist, and living abroad made it hard to find crumpet rings (where crumpets were unnown). You open the top and bottom of tuna cans, the larger ones, with a wheel opener that doesn't leave jagged edges, and there are your perfect height, reusable crumpet rings. You're welcome
I made a single batch to try these. My son got home and tried them about 8 pm and LOVES them so much he's cutting a bunch of 4-inch crumpet rings out of carbon steel...he welds. They are a winner and will make breakfast sandwiches. He is already asking if I can make some for a few people he knows will be crazy for them...😊
Looks PERFECT for using 2 crumpets to make an egg McMuffin @ roughly .08 for the crumpets .12 for an egg, .10 slice of cheese and .15 for slice of ham= $0.45 for 1 egg McMuffin==HUGE SAVINGS and it is MADE WITH LOVE not to mention you know what is in it and who made it. OH MY DEAR, THANK YOU Ever So Much For Sharing This Beautiful RECIPE. I can feed the 3 teenage Boys I've been raising for 14 years 2 egg McMuffins each for $2.70 total (no restaurant tax or state tax). Oh how I love saving money, every penny saved allows me to buy other products I would normally not be able to afford. By the way folks we don't eat out at McDonalds and rarely anywhere else, maybe a dozen times a year. This recipe I believe the cost is even less when you have your own hen and hog. This made my day, I cannot wait to serve the 3 grandsons a 2 egg McMuffin Breakfast and knowing it is healthy and filling. I remember them well. When I was in Australia there was a clip.on tv warning people about hygiene. It went " lewis the fly, lewis the fly straight from rubbish tip to you" and was accompanied by a cartoon of a fly walking all over rubbish, then flying into house and walking on plate of food. Never forgot it

You’re comment has me doubled over having found then watch this Chanel in bed on Sunday morning I thought I had a blowsy inside whilst enjoying my lay in, so I quickly paused my binge to give my room a spray, growled at the kids in the lounge room for letting the fly in, then grabbed a cuppa to settle back in and watch the end of the crumpet making whilst tucked up in bed. I have back problems so can't stand for too long at one time, so I tried making them on my Sandwich press. They turned out great as the temperature remains the same and I can sit at the table and make 4 at a time. I have made these several times now and each time they turn out better than the last. Thank you for all the time you put into helping us. From a 78yr old.♥
Stainless steel: 1. Bring the pan up to temperature. 2. THEN add your oil/butter/shortening/etc. 3. Re-apply fat as needed. Example: after each pancake. This will reduce any problem with sticking. -Nice video

I am definitely giving this a go! I dont buy them anymore, price is shocking. I have had packets that I have opened and middle of stack has been mouldy. They are not worth the price they now are. I can't wait to try these.

I made these today using egg rings. They turned out so well, I immediately ordered proper crumpet rings. They are very expensive in Australia. Great work Stacey. Subscribed.
I don't think their prices are that bad. Coles and Woolies branded are both $2 for a 300g round 6 pack, meanwhile they also both have Golden at $4.40 also for a 300g round 6 pack but regularly put them on sale for half price, around $2 seems fairly reasonable to me. Still making them at home is obviously dirt cheap in comparison requiring very little hands on time or effort, so it's definitely worthwhile to make if you can. Added benefit is adjusting the recipe to your liking such as using different flour, I tend to make 50% wholemeal crumpets which I too used egg rings before buying proper rings from Kitchen Warehouse (two 9 cm and two 10 cm).
I was visiting Australia in "92 and had crumpets- I thought I'd died and gone to heaven!! I will definitely be trying your recipe. I agree that store bought here in the US can't compare!
I know!!😃 My son moved there to marry a woman he met on the web. My husband did not like the idea that he was moving there because he would have to fly. Well turns out he passed away and didn’t have to worry about getting on a plane. So my youngest son and I took that never ending journey to see him get married. We had crumpets from Woolworth and I think I ate half of them myself. They were good but I bet these home made are much better.

I made the crumpets. I made some mistakes, so back watching again. My adult son said they taste like the brought ones. So will make again this time without mistakes. Mine were a bit heavy because I didn’t wait 45 minutes. And I added butter into mixture. Whoops. Ha ha.

I love crupets, but I'm American and they are very difficult to find here. The last 10 years I have had to buy on line and they are anything but fresh. I'm definitely going to give this recipe a try.
You would love a walk down the bakery aisle in one of our supermarkets, you would be spoiled for choice. Should I buy own brand or a brand name, huge square or round? Enjoy the recipe and remember your crumpets do not have to be round. 😂
I started making my own crumpets last year - so easy! I wish I'd known the recipe when the kids were little. I've also started making my own wraps. 1 cup of self-raising flour, 1 cup yoghurt, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt kneaded into a ball and cut into 8 small balls before rolling flat into 8 inch rounds yields 8 flexible wraps. Not bad considering the astronomical price we pay for a pack in Countdown!
@@FarmersWifeHomestead Absolutely! And it's not my recipe - I 'borrowed' it from somewhere and liked it so much that I kept it. I make the wraps weekly now. I've found they work best if you spray the pan with a light spray of cooking spray for the first one and then cook them dry after that. They only take a minute or two on each side with the pan turned down to medium after initially heating it :)
I use the flour and yoghurt recipe for my kinda like a gosleme, rolled out put a bit of spinach feta and grated cheddar on half, fold over and fry on the greased bbq, so delicious.

Re the yeast, yes that is a great tip re it's longevity. During the pandemic I couldn't buy yeast for a few months and all I had was some nearly a year out of date, and sure enough it worked just fine!
As far as I know Golden Crumpets (brand name) are South Australian. There used to be a rival brand called Hardings Crumpets which were the best, their tops would brown in the toaster. Unfortunately the company closed down in the 1990s after being in business for over 100 years. It’s Vegemite (thinly spread) on crumpets for me.
I’ve made this recipe in a pie maker which works really well. Keep the lid up during cooking unless you want to quickly give it some heat from the top to help it dry out. Great recipe!
@@carolyns99 There are different size "pie" makers. I've got a large-ish one (that would make one very large pie), and another one with four pie "holes" which would make 4 smaller ones. I just use a silicon tipped utensil like a scraper or an egg lifter, and gently flip the item over. However, normally one closes the lid to cook the top of the "pie" or goods at the same time. I've made mini quiches that work well. Just search on RUclips for various pie maker styles and you'll see what people can make with them to get an idea.
You are a very interesting vook and the recipes you make up as you go remind me of when my 4 sons were little and my husband was in the Air Force and in other countries sometimes. He has passed away two years ago sadly from covid. Anyway i s😢till do meals that way. I work with what i have. Im 70 years old this year. My vhildren are all grown now and they still call home asking hey mom how fid you you cook this recipe you made or that recipe. I love it. I love your program. I live in Pennsylvania in the USA.😊❤
Wow! What a super recipe for the good old fashioned English crumpets, or pikelets as we've always called them. I've tried for years to perfect making these favourite breakfast treats, but you're recipe is by far the best. I'm 85 years old now and don't cook as much as I did, but I'm certainly going to try out this recipe. Many thanks for sharing, it much appreciated. Are you from the Midlands? I’ve always called them pikelets, too. Everyone else I know calls them crumpets. (From Birmingham but now in South Island, NZ.)

My son lived with me and he breaks EVERYTHING!! Even sit my cooker on fire and ruined a pressure cooker so I put try pancaway. Tracy it shows what my mother and grandmother knew so well, make your own, much healthier with no weird additives, and it costs so much less.so family can eat better, live better pay off the mortgage quicker or whatever. Have a good drink of water before you walk out the door etc. Thank you Tracy, a couple of days ago I bought local sourdough version 4 in a packet and I loved them. Loads of melted butter and a bit of Tasmanian honey. Thought I should make them. Watching you, only difference would be to let the yeast run in the mix without the baking powder say overnight in a cool place. Thank you Tracy love this recipe glad you showed these. I really like how you cook, how you show how to do things. I like what you do better than any others I have seen. I know I can do your recipes after seeing you do it. You make it real. And coming from rural Aus it all makes sense.

@@wisecoconut5 Oh that’s interesting. To us there’s a pretty noticeable difference between Australian & Kiwi accents, because we have one of the two. I figured it would be similar in North America, but to be fair the states have more regional variations to camouflage the differences than we do in Australia. But even we’d be unlikely to think a Georgian was Canadian ; )

I’ve just stopped buying them over the years because they were so expensive for what you got. But now that I have this recipe, I can become a crumpet lover again. FYI, we’ve been using club soda to make pancakes now for years, so I’m wondering how this recipe would turn out with club soda instead of water? I bet it would be delicious and even more airy. The only crumpets I’ve ever had looked nothing like yours, the supermarket crumpets were not only dry but very anemic looking not beautifully browned like yours! Well done! Love from the USA❤🤓

I love crumpets, couldn't find them until Recently, i will make an effort . Trouble is am not very energetic anymore, having health issues. However, am determined to, make for my granddaughters, thank you for the explanation. In England during and after the war they were a great occasionally treat. I've used egg rings in the past. They make for a crumpet on the small side, so you have to eat more 😊. I totally agree with you about the supermarket crumpets - not even close to homemade. Cheers!

Just made my first batch of crumpets , they are brilliant. Toasted and served a couple to my husband, and without any prompting, his response was, " Wow, these are delicious , never going to buy crumpets from the supermarket again. So high praise to you for sharing your recipe and instruction. As a tip my dishwasher had finished a cycle so placed the covered mix in the empty dishwasher because it was warm. In the UK you can buy 8 crumpets for less than $1. They’re really cheap over here and delicious straight out of the toaster with a dollop of butter and jam. 😋

This popped up in my feed for some reason. I kept watching because of the Kiwi accent, but subscribed because of the recipes and your genuine communication with your watchers. Don't be concerned about your occasional silence when trying to think of the right word; this reminds so much of my own Scottish mum who would gab away at us while she was cooking. I am 72 years old now, and mum has been gone many years, but you brought back many happy memories.

Hi, it is the 83 yo Australian living in Sweden again. After looking at your video, I made 4 rings from tin cans for my first batch of crumpets. You only could describe them as being a disaster, batter too thick, too much batter in the rings, pan too hot, rings not greased enough, etc etc.
After messing up the first lot (they were eaten anyway), I corrected the above faults for the second lot and got 12 delicious crumpets, or at least in my eye they were since I have not had a crumpet for 25 years.
Thank you for your detailed instructions, that made all the difference.
And just to upset some of your readers, the only way to eat crumpets is to toast, butter and slather them with either Vegemite or Jam.

I’m 56 and from the UK. Loved the video. I don’t like sweet toppings on crumpets, usually I have them with butter if I add a topping then it’s either pate, marmite or primula cheese on top. My guilty pleasure though is crumpet pizza, toasted crumpet, butter, ketchup and a slice of cheddar. Then pop under a grill (or for me the air fryer as our grill doesn’t work) until the cheese melts. Not for everyone but I love it when I need a comfort lunch.

If I can just share a tip, from the days when internet didn't exist, and living abroad made it hard to find crumpet rings (where crumpets were unnown).
You open the top and bottom of tuna cans, the larger ones, with a wheel opener that doesn't leave jagged edges, and there are your perfect height, reusable crumpet rings. You're welcome

I made a single batch to try these. My son got home and tried them about 8 pm and LOVES them so much he's cutting a bunch of 4-inch crumpet rings out of carbon steel...he welds. They are a winner and will make breakfast sandwiches. He is already asking if I can make some for a few people he knows will be crazy for them...😊

I remember them well. When I was in Australia there was a clip.on tv warning people about hygiene. It went " lewis the fly, lewis the fly straight from rubbish tip to you" and was accompanied by a cartoon of a fly walking all over rubbish, then flying into house and walking on plate of food. Never forgot it

You’re comment has me doubled over having found then watch this Chanel in bed on Sunday morning I thought I had a blowsy inside whilst enjoying my lay in, so I quickly paused my binge to give my room a spray, growled at the kids in the lounge room for letting the fly in, then grabbed a cuppa to settle back in and watch the end of the crumpet making whilst tucked up in bed. I have back problems so can't stand for too long at one time, so I tried making them on my Sandwich press. They turned out great as the temperature remains the same and I can sit at the table and make 4 at a time. I have made these several times now and each time they turn out better than the last. Thank you for all the time you put into helping us. From a 78yr old.♥

I feel your pain. I use my pie maker…. Also for scones(largish) and to poach / steam / fry eggs. A bare wipe of oil / butter to eliminate sticking. ❤
Good to know. Same here. I'll try the sandwich maker. It will fit 4 as you say and holds a constant temp.
Stainless steel:
1. Bring the pan up to temperature.
2. THEN add your oil/butter/shortening/etc.
3. Re-apply fat as needed. Example: after each pancake.
This will reduce any problem with sticking.

I was JUST thinking to myself…..’i wonder if egg rings would do’ and there YOU were. Great minds think alike.
I don't think their prices are that bad. Coles and Woolies branded are both $2 for a 300g round 6 pack, meanwhile they also both have Golden at $4.40 also for a 300g round 6 pack but regularly put them on sale for half price, around $2 seems fairly reasonable to me.
Still making them at home is obviously dirt cheap in comparison requiring very little hands on time or effort, so it's definitely worthwhile to make if you can. Added benefit is adjusting the recipe to your liking such as using different flour, I tend to make 50% wholemeal crumpets which I too used egg rings before buying proper rings from Kitchen Warehouse (two 9 cm and two 10 cm).
I was visiting Australia in "92 and had crumpets- I thought I'd died and gone to heaven!! I will definitely be trying your recipe. I agree that store bought here in the US can't compare!
I know!!😃 My son moved there to marry a woman he met on the web. My husband did not like the idea that he was moving there because he would have to fly. Well turns out he passed away and didn’t have to worry about getting on a plane. So my youngest son and I took that never ending journey to see him get married. We had crumpets from Woolworth and I think I ate half of them myself. They were good but I bet these home made are much better.

I made the crumpets. I made some mistakes, so back watching again. My adult son said they taste like the brought ones. So will make again this time without mistakes. Mine were a bit heavy because I didn’t wait 45 minutes. And I added butter into mixture. Whoops. Ha ha.

I love crupets, but I'm American and they are very difficult to find here. The last 10 years I have had to buy on line and they are anything but fresh. I'm definitely going to give this recipe a try.
You would love a walk down the bakery aisle in one of our supermarkets, you would be spoiled for choice. Should I buy own brand or a brand name, huge square or round? Enjoy the recipe and remember your crumpets do not have to be round. 😂
I started making my own crumpets last year - so easy! I wish I'd known the recipe when the kids were little. I've also started making my own wraps. 1 cup of self-raising flour, 1 cup yoghurt, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt kneaded into a ball and cut into 8 small balls before rolling flat into 8 inch rounds yields 8 flexible wraps. Not bad considering the astronomical price we pay for a pack in Countdown!

@@FarmersWifeHomestead Absolutely! And it's not my recipe - I 'borrowed' it from somewhere and liked it so much that I kept it. I make the wraps weekly now. I've found they work best if you spray the pan with a light spray of cooking spray for the first one and then cook them dry after that. They only take a minute or two on each side with the pan turned down to medium after initially heating it :)
I use the flour and yoghurt recipe for my kinda like a gosleme, rolled out put a bit of spinach feta and grated cheddar on half, fold over and fry on the greased bbq, so delicious.

Re the yeast, yes that is a great tip re it's longevity. During the pandemic I couldn't buy yeast for a few months and all I had was some nearly a year out of date, and sure enough it worked just fine!

They look identical to Golden Crumpets. Yummy with either Chelsea Golden Syrup or baked beans. Cool

My favourite is buttered with apricot jam.
As far as I know Golden Crumpets (brand name) are South Australian. There used to be a rival brand called Hardings Crumpets which were the best, their tops would brown in the toaster. Unfortunately the company closed down in the 1990s after being in business for over 100 years. It’s Vegemite (thinly spread) on crumpets for me.
I’ve made this recipe in a pie maker which works really well. Keep the lid up during cooking unless you want to quickly give it some heat from the top to help it dry out. Great recipe!

A pie maker is an electric appliance like a sandwich maker but the inserts are in the shape of a pie. The base is the perfect size for a crumpet.

@@carolyns99 There are different size "pie" makers. I've got a large-ish one (that would make one very large pie), and another one with four pie "holes" which would make 4 smaller ones. I just use a silicon tipped utensil like a scraper or an egg lifter, and gently flip the item over. However, normally one closes the lid to cook the top of the "pie" or goods at the same time. I've made mini quiches that work well. Just search on RUclips for various pie maker styles and you'll see what people can make with them to get an idea.

He has passed away two years ago sadly from covid. Anyway i s😢till do meals that way. I work with what i have. Im 70 years old this year. Wow! What a super recipe for the good old fashioned English crumpets, or pikelets as we've always called them. I've tried for years to perfect making these favourite breakfast treats, but you're recipe is by far the best. My son lived with me and he breaks EVERYTHING!! Even sit my cooker on fire and ruined a pressure cooker so I put try pancaway. Loads of melted butter and a bit of Tasmanian honey. Thought I should make them. Watching you, only difference would be to let the yeast run in the mix without the baking powder say overnight in a cool place. Thank you Tracy love this recipe glad you showed these. I really like how you cook, how you show how to do things. I like what you do better than any others I have seen. I know I can do your recipes after seeing you do it. You make it real. And coming from rural Aus it all makes sense.

@@wisecoconut5 Oh that’s interesting. To us there’s a pretty noticeable difference between Australian & Kiwi accents, because we have one of the two. I figured it would be similar in North America, but to be fair the states have more regional variations to camouflage the differences than we do in Australia. But even we’d be unlikely to think a Georgian was Canadian ; )
Thank you so much for this video. I just became a new subscriber because of this recipe. I fell in love with crumpets when I lived in Australia in the 90s up in Queensland off the Bribie island road. I’ve just stopped buying them over the years because they were so expensive for what you got. But now that I have this recipe, I can become a crumpet lover again. FYI, we’ve been using club soda to make pancakes now for years, so I’m wondering how this recipe would turn out with club soda instead of water? I bet it would be delicious and even more airy. The only crumpets I’ve ever had looked nothing like yours, the supermarket crumpets were not only dry but very anemic looking not beautifully browned like yours!

For example, in this video you mentioned that you had tried using the canning rings in both orientations, and explained why you liked using them lip up rather than lip down. I've used egg rings in the past. They make for a crumpet on the small side, so you have to eat more 😊.

Just made my first batch of crumpets , they are brilliant. Toasted and served a couple to my husband, and without any prompting, his response was, " Wow, these are delicious , never going to buy crumpets from the supermarket again. So high praise to you for sharing your recipe and instruction.
As a tip my dishwasher had finished a cycle so placed the covered mix in the empty dishwasher because it was warm. The mix bubbled happily. Thanks again 😊

In the UK you can buy 8 crumpets for less than $1. They’re really cheap over here and delicious straight out of the toaster with a dollop of butter and jam. 😋

Oh joy! It’s very difficult to find crumpets here in Texas so I’m excited to try out this recipe. I don’t watch many cooking videos so I don’t know how the algorithm selected this particular one for me but I’m so happy it popped up. Crumpets are expensive in NZ! You can get 9 for around the £1 mark in the UK (and possibly less). Your home made ones look delicious, though.
