Fellow kiwi here, I agree about us eating different to other countries. I watch a lot of American videos like this and I notice they have common meals and ingredients that I wasn't familiar with. Like I notice they use a lot of powdered garlic and powdered onion, which I didn't even know existed before watching their videos 😂

I find buying cheap rice and pasta is a waste because they just turn to mush and are revolting. (That doesn’t mean buying the most expensive, but mid range-around $2.00 per package works)Good quality rice and pasta can withstand reheating and doesn’t go from uncooked to mushy in the blink of an eye, and work far better for baked/slowcooked dishes.

And we ate what was put in front of us (I still detest broad beans, brains and tripe 🤣 but I still ate them) and so will my children, right down to brussels sprouts, and pretty much any other veg I serve them.

What I love about this type of video is they trigger alternative ideas ... for example I would probs swap out sausage meat & eggs for a packet of nutitional yeast flakes, the bread for packet lentils, & oats for chia seeds.
It's so inspiring to hear someone else cooks on the fly like me & watch them bash out more than a week's worth of meals in a compact kitchen very similar in size to mine 👌

Love the Video! Just wanted to clarify, they don't hold out the cheap bread so you have to purchase the more expensive bread , it's because the cheap bread is needed by many, if they put it all out at once it will be sold out before lunch, meaning any families that NEED to purchase cheap bread but can only access the shop in the afternoon would always be out of luck, of course they cant ensure you wil get it but that is what they do, to try make sure alot of people have access to it throughout the day, they release some in the morning, lunch time and afternoon around 4ish. its sold out very quickly, at least in my area of Auckland.

Fabulous! So neat to see a Kiwi cook using the ingredients that we have available here in NZ. Gave me some great ideas dividing up that Pam’s Asian Vege pack - used that this weekend when we were sick and missed our usual grocery shop, and managed to make a healthy meal of Surimi Pasta Salad with what we had lurking in freezer and back of pantry. Hope your channel soars!!

This is great to see! My Nana used to cook like this because she grew up in a large family and also lived during both World Wars when everything was expensive and in short supply. She used to always say, if you have an egg, you have a meal. She was a caterer and knew how to make a meal out of just a handful of ingredients. I learned to be quite creative with what I have on hand too. Great channel!

O how we've been suckered into all the fancy stuff. It's so not necessary. also we never use up all our herbs flour sauces and so forth so it would have been ok to use bits of them. Next week you are going to be ahead already so even at one ingredient a week you'll soon have a wonderfully stocked pantry without blowing your budget.

Loved your video, I've seen a few like these but this is the first kiwi version. My husband has done the FODMAP elimination diet to figure out what he could and couldn't eat and unfortunately onions/garlic was one of the worst offenders. I felt like I had to learn how to cook all over again, especially as so much processed food contains onions so I had to learn (and be organised enough) to make everything from scratch just like you were doing in this video - it certainly is cheaper and tastier. Also eggs! So sad they have become as expensive as other proteins. My Mum always says if there's an egg in the house there's a meal.

I'm 55(in Ohio), & mom didn't scratch cook. I grew up in the era where moms wanted to be in the workforce instead of the home. The weekends were a treat because she'd make tuna noodle casserole 1 night and spaghetti and real meatballs the next instead of us eating the usual old fashioned TV dinners 😣 I didn't want my children to eat processed food, so I read OLD cookbooks, watched cooking shows, and then was beyond blessed to have an amazing 90yo lady from church take me under her wing & teach me how to cook delicious food from almost nothing the old frugal way! Because of her, when my children arrived, I was able to feed them healthy meals & help stretch our 1 paycheck.(I chose to stay at home after thinking about my lonely, latchkey years.) I started to teach my daughters and son to cook as soon as they could sit on a counter and stir! I'm proud to say that they all are great frugal scratch cooks who are now teaching their children, and in my son's case, his wife! Never stop cooking! So many of us do when we get older, but we deserve to have good food , too! BTW, She knows how much you love her!💞

I am amazed at not only the amount of food you were able to make with $50, but the degree of quality and healthiness you maintained from beginning to end. I don't eat meat ( fish & veges) but really enjoy your frugal use of ingredients. I make the little egg savouries often using veges, cheese; make crustless quiches with everything in them including leftovers and mushrooms; bake my own bread, biscuits, cakes. You can make heaps of meals with basics like onions, potatoes, carrots, greens, salad & herbs you can grow yourself, basic cheddar cheese, salmon & sardines, nuts, all sorts of beans, rice, quinoa and buckwheat (both the flour and groats grown in South Canterbury). The trouble is, many people just don't seem to have cooking skills & rely on buying takeaways or snacks for speed and convenience. I enjoy cooking so have no problem feeding myself or other people. Keep on doing what you are doing - it is great!

It takes a bit more money upfront, but those sachets are poor value for money compared to investing in a few ingredients. Soy sauce, honey, sesame oil, sweet chilli sauce, oyster sauce (as examples - the actual list depends on what flavour you like) and you'll be able to whip up the equivalent amount of sauce so many more times. Actually kiwis in general LOVE sachets of stuff (Maggi anyone?) but they're just a few cents of spices and flour and salt that they then charge you a giant mark up on.

Nothing going to waste, REAL food that also looks delicious as well as being far more nutritious - you're showing people that "living frugally" doesn't mean you have to deprive yourself. I am definitely going to be doing the baked oatmeal. While not "frugal" I can add some hemp seeds, some nuts, even some protein powder and have a really nutritious and delicious mid-morning snack at work, or even on the go. You REALLY outdid yourself with this video, and proved anyone can eat healthy (and very well!) on a budget.
I'm sorry to hear about your knee and that you won't be able to work - I know you were counting on that income, as well as getting out of the house. I have no doubt you will be fine though - you definitely know how to problem-solve, as witnessed in this video - perhaps you'll have more time for homesteading projects and getting your garden back up. As trite as it might sound, everything happens for a reason, now you just need to figure out what that reason is and absolutely make it work to your benefit. As always, I will be keeping you and Husband in my thoughts and prayers and even 7800 miles away, I am here for you. Love & BIG HUGS

You make my eyes leak. Tonia, you are such a special woman, so beautiful inside and out. Thank you for your unwavering support as always. I'm so pleased this platform led me to you! P.S. Add some honey to the baked oatmeal it will be much nicer hehehe.

I’m very impressed , it’s easy to cook when you have all the food and money to make things but you are showing people how to make nutritious and filling food on very little money . I would have never thought of breaking down the bag of frozen veggies, that was brilliant ! Thank you ! 💐
