This made me unexpectedly really sad! My grandma always said she won’t buy crumpets from the shops because they don’t taste right but nobody she knew had a recipe for them (a problem we literally cannot experience these days…). But she’d said on many occasions she still remembered what “real crumpets” tasted like from the bakery and wished she was smart enough to make and share them with us so we knew… she passed away years ago now but I stupidly got the idea, “I wonder if these crumpets are what grandma still remembers, I should make them for her.”, for a split second before remembering she’s gone. Sorry grandma would have loved to share some with you but I’ll still have to try it now :(

Made them today, followed your instructions to the letter and they came out perfect. Im a foreign lady settling in the North of England and I'm very proud to offer these to my Yorkshire husband. He loved them!!
My late wife was a "foreign lady", we lived in the North of England.... and she made the best Yorkshire Puddings I have ever tasted....even my dear mother had to concede defeat! Enjoy Yorkshire!
Your Yorkshire Husband will love them💜💜 (Although as a Yorkshire Man - like my Father; he will not call them "Crumpets!" In Yorkshire most people call them "Pikelets"💜💜 !! (& sometimes they make them in rectangles too) but the circular form is the norm💜💜 My Father lived on a farm deep in the Yorkshire Moors💜💜 (as a child/teen) where they got snowed in for months most Winters he told me💜💜 & pikelets with butter & lots of hot tea were a good way of stocking up calories & keeping warm💜💜 (espc after they had got up to milk the cows at 4am/or in lambing season) Most English "Baking" was to provide lots of calories & keep ppl warm - back when my Father's Grandparents had no central heating & the Winters/all Weather was much worse than now. I hope he is very appreciative of you making them🤭💜 it's a lovely idea🙏🏻💜🇬🇧💜
As a northerner, there's nothing more reassuring than hearing "you be careful". Brilliant vid, agree with comments about recipe at the start, is the exact reason I watched as I knew I had all the ingredients. Brilliant! 🎉
Jecca, our two youngest children are chefs and their fingers are so resilient when it comes to flipping over a piece of meat, then giving it a poke to see if it feels done.. I enjoy Canning up produce and making jam. Yum Plus making toffee and honeycomb and am forever burning myself. Grin, well worth it ! 🤣🤣
@4evaSoxfan My gosh how did you end up there?🤭💜 (My Publisher dragged me to LA in 2018 (I'm a Writer) & I have to say; I almost ran for the Airport several times those first few days🤭💜 (but then Industry types in LA are a nightmare; I met some sharks & things were very different; but perhaps the rest of it isn't so bad💜💜) I didn't grow up in the North East myself - but where we moved to at one point & lived - far further South - there was a lot of Geordies there💜💜 (their word not mine!) - bc their grandparents had all moved down from "Durham" for the mines - although those disappeared in the early 90s. Nobody ever lost their Accent & their Culture is still alive & well - sometimes when I visit my Mum I see some ppl that I knew then🙏🏻💜🇬🇧💜

I'm from Puerto Rico, I've never had a crumpet and don't know anyone who has, but I love listening to this man speak and I would probably attempt to make a crumpet just because it sounds like it would make him proud lol
i live in NZ and grew up in the 70's and 80's, mum would buy them in the Autumn and Winter (now days they are available all year round) you can also use them in place of the toast for poached eggs or baked beans but memainly just used to have butter and vegmite on ours, very very hot from the toaster
You will love them🎉💜 Serve with plenty of butter slathered on!🌸💜 I've never met anybody who didn't like these - they're too good! The voice is lovely though; my Father was a Yorkshire man (& I miss him a lot - he was older than most people's parents & gone sooner than most too) That voice & accent has such a lovely sound🙏🏻💜🇬🇧💜
I saw this as a recommended video and I used to be a chef at restaurants and cafes in New Zealand back in the 90's and 2000's. I completely lost the love to cook, let alone bake for a few reasons but mainly 1 Head Chef that just took the fun away. However, seeing the sheer kindness and excellent recipe you made, well, it made me want to subscribe and try to get back into cooking something (I never imagined I could think that way again). I had flashbacks long forgotten of growing up in the early 80's cooking Pikelets and Pancakes with my Mum on a Saturday morning that had a similar recipe to this one in many ways was a nice surprise and good motivator, she would be happy. I buy crumpets too, but NOT any more thanks to you John!!! John, if you see this, I saw that you have attempted or have given a heart and a reply to more than 500 comments (I got tired looking further), that alone is something so beautiful in nature I was humbled. Be very proud of yourself for being so selfless and thank you for being an example of what I think is just pure kindness to all. :)
Dear Stanley, it's comments like yours that keep me going with these video recipes, and to receive such positivity from a fellow chef... is high praise indeed. I try hard to read and respond to evey comment, but I must admit, it's getting harder, well for a disabled 70 year old anyway, 🤣😉👍 but I'll keep plodding on until I can't. I really hope you get your Mojo back soon Stanley. I can't imagine not cooking and teaching. Cheers, mate 👍.

I was born and have lived my whole life in the US. I've never been to the UK or had a proper crumpet in my life: I grew up eating "English muffins" and they have long been my favorite breakfast bread. Until today when I made these for the first (of many) time. I couldn't resist eating two almost immediately while I cooked the others!

You are amazing, John! I was a flight attendant for 38 years and often flew to England. One things I’ve always missed since retirement 5 years ago was British crumpets. My husband loves RUclips and saw yours last night, asking me if I’d ever had crumpets. I said, “Yes and they’re wonderful”! I just tried your recipe and they are perfect! I made mine with Better Batter 1:1 gluten free flour since I’m intolerant. I added 3 extra Tbsp of water to my batter and proofed in the oven with the light on. They’re even better than I’d hoped!!! I can’t wait to make them next month with my 88 yr old mother who loves crumpets, too. I also love your warm cuddly Pooh voice. Who wouldn’t?
thank yhou for this!! I'm gluten free and I was just thinking, while watching, if it would work GF since I have trouble with yeast and stuff. Glad it worked for you!!
You mean English crumpets from England; or were your British crumpets from Wales or Scotland? Scotch whisky is from Britain and is British whisky, but it's made in Northern Britain, which is Scotland, so we call it Scotch whisky (note the spelling). I'm an Englishwoman from England, whereas a British woman who could also be Welshwoman or a Scotswoman. There are three countries in Britain, and four in the United Kingdom. England is not a sovereign country: it doesn't have its own government, nor its own King, but the UK does. The word united gives a clue to there being more than one country in the kingdom. Anything from England is precisely English, including me and my language. Simple.

As a Pole who moved to the UK just before teenagehood, I got to be influenced by both, Home and the UK fairly equally. Now in my mid 20s, I combine the two often. Crumpets with Polish pate, Yorkshire puddings filled with buckwheat and gravy and so on. Don't knock it until you try it!
@@Sushilover01 I do from time to time, but (mainly due to nostalgia I imagine) I usually buy the ready/tinned stuff. The two main Polish brands are Profi and Podlaski, both about same quality wise. They’re nothing special, and admittedly, they do look like wet cat food in the tin, however the flavour is very pleasant and there’s many types to choose from with anything from garlic to sun dried tomatoes as a “topping”. They’re also handy to have in your pantry as they’re very shelf stable and cheap so I usually just buy a dozen whenever I visit the Polish shop.
About never buying another Crumpet again - you have THAT right! Only I have never tasted Crumpets before I started making them at home from your recipe and I can guarantee you I won't be buying them now. Mine come out PERFECT every time. I bought one of those infrared temp gauges and never knew there was such a thing, now I won't cook without it. I make my Crumpets on a 12" Lodge cast iron pan I already had, but I did need to buy a set of Crumpet rings...I kid you NOT ~ I must have made 8-dozen since I started as I can't resist giving them away to my friend and her husband, and my son adores them with coffee in the morning, and of course I only get a few to myself, but I enjoy each bite I do get. Thank you. Had I not made your acquaintance in this way I would never have learned of Crumpet Joy !!!!!!
I'm a terrible baker who always seems to get it wrong, but I love your videos. Today I followed the recipe - it worked so perfectly! We loved the crumpets! So the result is happy stomachs and increased confidence. Very easy to make and turned out scrumptious. Thank you John.

My favourite breakfast choice, absolutely nothing compares to a hot, toasted crumpet drenched in butter! I used empty, tuna cans as crumpet rings before I could find them to buy. @@threadmiser4914 English muffins are quite different than crumpets, though in a good US grocery store you find them near each other. English muffins are more like biscuits; made from a dough that's rolled out, cut, then baked.

Hope you are keeping well!
I made these today. I learned if you break the bubbles forming on top you can actually feel the dough that has cooked underneath them. That gave me courage to lift the ring and then flip with a spatula. So easy to make and a huge hit. Thank you. I would encourage anyone to try this easy recipe.

Loved crumpets since I was a child. All my life whenever I have crumpets, I have two. One with butter and jam, and one just covered in butter. (not margarine, proper butter). Absolutely love them!
Wow John. another winner! Made these last night: Made the first two too thick and burned them, made the next two thinner and less scorched and finally nailed the correct temperature (I really have to get one of those thermometers) and the last four were perfect. So this morning I popped them in the toaster and served them up with a fried egg and smoked salmon on top! Not had a proper crumpet since I was in the UK 10 years ago. This recipe is right up there with your fabulous suet pudding steak and kidney which is the best I have ever tasted. Thank you!

My goodness John, these were so good! I doubled the recipe, used 3.5" x1" non-stick crumpet rings. With not much effort, I got a bakers dozen of the best crumpets I have ever had! Crisp on the outside and, light and fluffy on the inside. Keep up the great work! Love your recipes! Thank you 🥰
To be honest, I got lazy with the buttering of all those rings. I doubled the recipe, made three huge ones in a good frying pan and cut into shapes. Although not as elegant, every bit as good. They freeze perfectly so crumpets for tea for a few weeks.
Ever since I had a crumpet in England I was hooked... I'm glad I can make them at home now with this amazing recipe. They are quite similar to Moroccan pancakes, though they use semolina flour and are as big as a plate.
I've made crumpets quite a few times, but this is the best recipe by far. Light, fluffy and full of holes! I doubled the recipe and used slightly less yeast and only one tsp of baking powder. Perfect. Thank you John.

Made them today, followed your instructions to the letter and they came out perfect. Im a foreign lady settling in the North of England and I'm very proud to offer these to my Yorkshire husband. He loved them!!
Great job! my friend, please say hi to your husband from me.
My late wife was a "foreign lady", we lived in the North of England.... and she made the best Yorkshire Puddings I have ever tasted....even my dear mother had to concede defeat!
Enjoy Yorkshire!
@JohnKirkwoodProFoodHomemade hi I have a question? After the flour do I add salt or sugar? The screen say sugar but you say salt
@@Akichan07 sugar is only needed to activate the yeast. When John adds the flour, he definitely means salt. Just a little mistake in the 'subtitles '.
Your Yorkshire
Husband will
love them💜💜
(Although as a Yorkshire Man - like my Father; he will not call them "Crumpets!"
In Yorkshire most people call them
"Pikelets"💜💜
!!
(& sometimes they make them in rectangles too)
but the circular form is
the norm💜💜
My Father lived on a farm deep in
the Yorkshire
Moors💜💜
(as a child/teen)
where they got snowed in for months most Winters he told me💜💜 & pikelets with butter & lots of hot tea were a good way of stocking up calories & keeping warm💜💜 (espc
after they had got up to milk the cows at 4am/or in lambing season)
Most English "Baking" was to provide lots of calories & keep ppl warm - back when my Father's Grandparents had no central heating & the Winters/all Weather was much worse than now.
I hope he is very appreciative of you making
them🤭💜
it's a lovely
idea🙏🏻💜🇬🇧💜
As a northerner, there's nothing more reassuring than hearing "you be careful". Brilliant vid, agree with comments about recipe at the start, is the exact reason I watched as I knew I had all the ingredients. Brilliant! 🎉
And lively to hear a proper accent.
you be careful crossing that road
As a Geordie lass living in LA, it was so lovely to hear another Geordie accent. I am going to give this recipe a go. Thank you lad?
@4evaSoxfan
My gosh how did you end up there?🤭💜
(My Publisher dragged me to LA in 2018 (I'm a Writer) & I have to say;
I almost ran for the Airport several times those first few days🤭💜 (but then Industry types in LA are a nightmare; I met some sharks & things were very different; but perhaps the rest of it isn't
so bad💜💜)
I didn't grow up in the North East myself - but where we moved to at one point & lived - far further South - there was a lot of Geordies there💜💜 (their word not mine!) - bc their grandparents had all moved down from "Durham" for the mines - although those disappeared in the early 90s. Nobody ever lost their Accent & their Culture is still alive & well - sometimes when I visit my Mum I see some ppl that I knew then🙏🏻💜🇬🇧💜

i live in NZ and grew up in the 70's and 80's, mum would buy them in the Autumn and Winter (now days they are available all year round) you can also use them in place of the toast for poached eggs or baked beans but memainly just used to have butter and vegmite on ours, very very hot from the toaster

I saw this as a recommended video and I used to be a chef at restaurants and cafes in New Zealand back in the 90's and 2000's. I completely lost the love to cook, let alone bake for a few reasons but mainly 1 Head Chef that just took the fun away.

Fantastic! I'm pleased you gave them a try my friend and they turned out well.

Thank you for your kind words my friend.

Sounds good. Dzięki!
Do you make your own pate?

Hope you enjoy them Elizabeth 😊
It’s nice to see a true northerner showing us how to make crumpets. There’s nothing like homemade baking. 🥰
Thank you, and thanks for watching my friend. Here is the ingredients list and full written method on the channels website,

I made these today, and your recipe is a winner! Thank you so much. Two of them disappeared immediately and the rest in the freezer to have something to look forward to.😊❤ this is perhaps the best crumpet recipe available on the Internet❤
Nice job Mary, so pleased you managed the recipe, and they were successful. Well done.
I’ve had this recipe saved for months now, and I’m getting ready to try my test batch before Christmas. Thank you so much for sharing and Merry Christmas! 🎄
Thank you so much for your incredibly kind " SUPER THANKS" Whitney. Your contribution to the channel really helps me maintain the good quality of my videos, and also goes a long way towards increasingly expensive ingredients and production costs. I will give you a shout-out and name splash on my very next video, thanks again my friend. John.
I absolutely love the tidiness in which you work .. and that you don't waste one drop
I had always heard of crumpets but never knew what they were. Now I do and on top of that, they're so simple to make!!! Thanks John! This 'ol southern boy (USA) will have a go at them.
Thanks Paul.
I’m just glad that RUclips recommended this very simple and just perfect recipe.. I wish all recipes would be in this format
Cheers Manuel, hope you enjoy them. Please like, share, and subscribe my friend .
I can see his grandchildren around the table mouth watering watching patiently their granddad finishing these delicious carpets specially the shaped one lovely
Delicious carpets 😋
I love your videos, lots of those old fashioned foods I remember from childhood. Such nice easy to follow recipes and great hints. Thank you !
Love the blue plate in the crumpet recipe. Would you please tell me where I could buy the same? Thanks. I plan to make crumpets tomorrow after buying some rings. ❤
So true my friend ❤️.
@@hollyr.2846 I believe they are Fox & Ivy Azzurra from Tesco.
Thank you 🥰
Fantastic! Thanks Melissa, thanks for watching my friend ❤️ much appreciated.

Nothing like an old master to deliver the real thing! Thank you John from a Kiwi living in Kona, Hawai'i
Thank you, and thanks for watching my friend. Here is my latest video recipe. profoodhomemade.com/12-mini-apple-pies/
I've made crumpets quite a few times, but this is the best recipe by far. Light, fluffy and full of holes! I doubled the recipe and used slightly less yeast and only one tsp of baking powder. Perfect. Thank you John.
Nice job, Jes. I'll try your formula. It sounds interesting that you, in effect, halved the yeast and the baking powder, and it still worked out. Thanks for watching my friend ❤️
That's good to know as I have never made anything closer han a pancake. I've copied the recipe list onto my desktop already.
These are on my list for the coming weekend. My daughter and I cook and bake and pickle and can and this year we made something wonderful called Maple butter...... It will be wonderful with these crumpets.
And just to be clear, cooks NEVER retire
Fantastic! I'm pleased you gave them a try my friend and I hope they turned out well.
I think, in addition to being a professional cook, you could also have been the voice for Winnie the Pooh. 😊. I’ll be trying this recipe soon.
I cant unhear this...😂😂😂
LOL my hubby walked in and asked “is that winnie the Pooh?” 😂
Might I also point out that Pooh is now in the public domain, and I would endlessly watch episodes of basic British meals as read by WTP...
Lmao! I sent this to my partner and told her I found Pooh’s cooking channel. I love it
Oh bother!
We just made these and oh it came out perfect t! My husband is English and wanted to make these for awhile and glad we did! Thank you!!
Fantastic! I'm pleased you gave them a try my friend and they turned out well.
So good to see the views in 7 days! Often thought John doesn’t get his due but this is great to see. Good on you John keep on showing us how traditional fare SHOULD be made!
Thanks Rupert, it has done very well, just shows, the simple things in life are the best.
Thank you! I was planning some make-ahead meals, and your new video came up. AND you said these freeze well! Perfect.
Many thanks from snowy Michigan, in the northern United States.
Thank you, thank you, thank you 😭 I live in Rwanda and I miss crumpets so much. When I get back to the UK to visit, I stuff myself with buttered crumpets and blue cheese. You can't buy them here and I had no idea they were that easy to make - I'm going to give this a go!
Hope you enjoy them my friend.
These are the greatest thing in the world~ Warm with butter and marmalade. Heaven. Thank you John~
I’m a Brit in LA and finally someone tells me All Purpose Flour is what the Brits call Plain flour. THANK YOU!!
You're very welcome, ROJO. Thanks for watching my friend ❤️ much appreciated.
I had the same sense of relief in finally being told this
@@rojo3779 I'm happy to have finally learned this, too. 😁 This American was always afraid to try recipes from across the pond, because I had no idea where to find plain flour. :)
Salivating over those crumpets here in New York City. John, you make me believe that I can cook.
Of course you can G, go for it mate.
I just learned this year it's ok ! Any one can do it !
I never realised that crumpets were so easy to make. They look nice - so much better than the shop bought ones. Thank you for sharing your recipe John. 😊

I made these and they were wonderful. I used canning rings for cooking the crumpets and they worked great. My favorite way to eat them was with butter and raw honey. So yummy!
So glad I found this channel. Lovely no-nonsense cooking.
Thanks so much 😊
They look so good, if it wasn't so late in the evening I'd be in the kitchen having a go now. Thank you for sharing.
One day later and I've made some and won't be buying them anymore!
Two weeks since I first watched this and I can't stop making them! I normally triple everything and use 4 inch crumpet rings. So far I haven't frozen any as they keep well in an airtight box. I take 2 to work for lunch every day 😁
Grannie made lovely crumpets and she made the best black currant jam!😊
Thank you, and thanks for watching my friend. Here is the ingredients list and full written method on the channel's website,

Robertson's damson plum jam used to be heavenly with crumpets but I haven't had either for years.
I just had to tell you that I have made this recipe and it turned out exactly as planned in your instruction. They were delicious and I urge anyone interested to try this for sure. Thank you Mr. Kirkwood for the recipe.

I've backed bread for fifty years and more, but John, you've vastly improved my bread and opened whole new avenues of baking to me. I've tried about fifteen or more of your recipes and all of them have turned out great. I never knew what a crumpet was until I watched this video, having read of them for sixty years or so. I can't wait to try this recipe! Thanks, from an old US Marine, also retired.
You're very welcome, John. I'm glad my recipes have been of some use to you. Thanks again for watching my friend ❤️ much appreciated.
have you tried the recipe yet?
Butter and lemon curd is my go to combo for crumpets. Don’t knock it until you try it! 🍋
Sounds good!
Lemon juice, sugar and butter like you pancakes. Yum yum
Delicious 😋
I hope this finds you well. Try that lemon curd on rhubarb crisp, if you want a taste of what's waiting in the hereafter.
That sounds really good! I wonder if you could add a little lemon zest, lemon juice, or maybe candied lemon into the batter itself to give a little citrus hint if that's your vibe :)
Nice! I have been wanting to make crumpets again. The tip about freezing the finished ones makes this recipe practical for our two-person, older family!
Hope you enjoy them james.
I am mad about crumpets but had never tried making my own but, I will now. Such a wonderful way you have of teaching us , thank you.

I tried making crumpets years ago and failed miserably but this time I followed your video/recipe and I’m amazed how well they turned out. Unfortunately they didn’t last long enough to take a picture. Thank you
Great job! Dale, they freeze well so next time you can make a bigger batch.
"they didn’t last long enough to take a picture" sounds like the turned out perfect 👍
Haha didn't last long enough.
