Of course, both have their merits. I think as a standalone sound, the cymbal ones sound nicer, but context dictates which is best. The steel ones would be awesome, especially being played by someone like Jojo Mayer.
Hi David! I am the drum set player from the Powhatan Marching Band. I saw you while I was rehearsing, but didn't get a chance to meet you, so I just wanted to tell you that you've been a huge influence and inspiration throughout my music career :)
Thats awesome man, wyndell and I go way back, I taught with jb for a few seasons of indoor, and ransome was actually my band director haha. But if I had known I would have stuck around a little longer. I caught your show though and was great man, if you ever see me around be sure to holler!
I just made that exact same sound! I took some no name hi-hats, inverted them, and drilled like 30 holes in one, and 50 in the other, kept them inverted and reverse mounted them (Bottom on top, top on bottom, with bells both pointed inward) as hi-hats again. Has the tone of the steel ones you made with the decay of the cymbal ones you did!
make shure you don't get any brass or bronze splinters in you're fingers or eyes! they're poisonous as hell. awesome video though, really love the sound they make :D
omg yes mate I love your yt channel was so exited for another video been looking at all ur view you helped me out loads mann keep it up I absolutely can't wait for the next one and you should do reading comments 1 time but incorporate a drumming video into it xxxx
Just a word of work advice for anyone attempting stuff like this.. and for you David.. With a drill press and tapping metal, always clamp down your material whenever you can which ishould be 99.9% of the time. As someone who has drilled thousands upon thousands of holes with a drill press I cannot express enough how dangerous they can be at times when the bit suddenly bites, grabs, and locks the material causing whatever was held by you to spin a full 360 in an instant. I've seen people's arms cut wide open, fingers lost, and have seen pictures of degloving where all the skin is ripped off a finger. It happens so fast there is no way you can pull your hand out of the way fast enough. When you were trying to drive that 3/8 bit I was totally cringing. And it can happen with any material, and just as often with thin stuff if not moreso. Keep those fingers!
At my high school we are doing a steam punk themed show and the snare line has ribbon crashers over there rim, and this sounds exactly like theirs, great job!
The problem was using lubricant with the bit. That actually has the opposite effect on the metal than what you want- it lubricates the metal and reduces friction, which prevents the bit from cutting into the metal. Try an actual cutting oil, you should see quite a difference. Love your videos and your creativity, excellent work.
Nice. I like the sawing cuts to the beat and the autofocus transition at 03:54. Kind of prefer the steel strips because of the staccato-ness but it'd be interesting to hear the cymbal strip version with fewer pieces or the nuts tightened a little.
The beginning of your demo groove hurts me so much. It's well played, but I'm trying to groove to it. But on a serious note good job, I get all the inspired
I preferred the cymbal one for both examples. Awesome are the things you share with us poor folk. On the cymbal one... do you know which is on top. B8 or B20? I have B8 pro set.
can you make a video showing alternative ways to cut cymbals? like for those of us who do not have the tools you use, given there are some, they don't have to be as good as your methods but another possibility?
If you just Flatten the metal ribbons and scratched the metal to look shiny and they will be awesome like they were the first time. And I love all the videos you make they are awesome! and possibly if you read this comment you could make a video on remaking the same metal ribbons.
what if you drill a third hole in the middle than you could mount it on a high hat stand. with the high hat clutch on top you could change the pressure between the cymbal pieces and change the sound.
I much prefer the cymbal ribbons, as compared to the steel. The cymbal ribbons are clearer, brighter, and carry more definition. The steel ribbons are darker, which I would normally go for but for some reason not what I find appealing in this instance, but sound "dead."
Dave, your videos are great. I'd like to say that the beat featured around 1:40 is one of my favorites you've made... It's awesome, what is the sample from??
I like how the cymbal ones have a little more sustain to them, they seem more musical.
Althought, this could be useful to use if you want little sustain, like in DnB :v
Of course, both have their merits. I think as a standalone sound, the cymbal ones sound nicer, but context dictates which is best. The steel ones would be awesome, especially being played by someone like Jojo Mayer.
i think that's because they're just more stripes
how about both types in one crasher?
Love it homie!
Oh Hai Gabe 😂
People who do stuff like this really are so creative. In more ways than one lol :)
You should try to make snare wires out of guitar strings
He finally did!!
i like the crisp sound of the crasher. imagine if we had many of them with different pitches. that'd be really cool!

Ok sure thing!
the new ones have a pleasant ring, the steel is kinda flat with no particular tone. lot of tedious work, nice job!
I couldn't help but notice the bandsaw cutting being timed with the music, love it man, you're videos are the best!
The groove at the end was great! Wasnt sure if it was in an odd time but I was nodding along! Great work!!
damm... now I need to get a step drill...
BRB rdavidr, just switching channels!
Another great build! Both sounded good, but I liked the cymbal one better. It was a bit louder and sounded brighter.
i saved bunch of cracked cymbals years ago for this, but didn't know where to start and which tools use.
THANK YOU SO MUCH
Thought the cymbal brass sounded a little more musical but they both sound cool and have their place. Well done.
Bandsaw in sync with the music. cool!
Muito bom David! Sou baterista e entusiasta das novidades... sou fã das suas invensões!
Abraço!
this one from cymbals is far more better than metal!!! More clearly wash sound and volume and sound like blade in sharpness!Good work dude!!
Wow, a cracked A Custom. Who would’ve thought that would happen...Awesome work, as usual.
THE PICTURE AT 7:12 LOL! Great video btw, big inspiration David.l.

Sounds pretty great. Makes me wanna try to make one.
sounds awesome, great timbre on that.
i prefer the metal ones personally; they have a more defined transient. both sound great though.
I liked the cymbal one more. :)
i think the cymbal has a nicer body so I think a mix of the two would sound great.
I really like the sheetmetal over the cymbal material.
I don't usually comment on yt videos but I loved the way that you sync the saw sound with music. specially in the min 3:30.
keed rocking!
Can't get enough of these vids man
omg yes mate I love your yt channel was so exited for another video been looking at all ur view you helped me out loads mann keep it up I absolutely can't wait for the next one and you should do reading comments 1 time but incorporate a drumming video into it xxxx
you should put springs behind the washers to shorten the decay. better yet, another nut above each spring and you have adjustable decay
I love the anvil. You are very inventive! Keep up the great work!

i never thought i’d love these ribbons as much as i do now
Love your channel, David!
The old crash cymbal bits sounds good like a max stack
Subliminal flying spaghetti monster? LMAO
I really like how there is a conscious cadence to your editing. :)
wow the quality of your videos has changed so much since then
Nice. I like the sawing cuts to the beat and the autofocus transition at 03:54. Kind of prefer the steel strips because of the staccato-ness but it'd be interesting to hear the cymbal strip version with fewer pieces or the nuts tightened a little.
That pause at 8:29 was the hottest thing I’ve heard
infectious grooves man!
cymbals sound better in the mix. nice work.
You should try mounting an individual strip on top of a crash or china to get a slight stack/jingle/rivet sound.
The beginning of your demo groove hurts me so much. It's well played, but I'm trying to groove to it. But on a serious note good job, I get all the inspired
I made one out of some blue tempered shim stock scraps from work. It sounds awesome.
3:30 the saw and music sync: gg hahah
I like how you clip your video so good to the music.
I think the one made out of symbols sounds better
That's really cool, almost like a hi hat bark
i love the cuts this editing! i can tell you took quite a bit of care with the scene where you were using the bandsaw
I Love all your videos man, and keep up the good work. :)
It sounds really good..
Maybe try alternating the bronze and steel ribbons and see what that sounds like. Well, hear what that sounds like...you can't see sound
Nicholas Margarite not without a spectrum analyser anyway !
Have you done a video tour of your shop itself? If not that would be interesting to see.
I like the metal ones i honestly thought the cymbal ones would sound better, not disappointed just surprised still like them both though!
Tracks are "Eagle Rider" and "infinity machine" off of Dave's SoundCloud soundcloud.com/silentdave91
The new ones sound much more lively.
Rdavidr , can you record a lesson about , how to change a drum heads and how make good sound ?
It's about time!!!
I preferred the cymbal one for both examples. Awesome are the things you share with us poor folk. On the cymbal one... do you know which is on top. B8 or B20? I have B8 pro set.

awesome beat
I can smell metal on my hands after watching this video
The Andrew Hale sample is much appreciated.
genius. very inspiring. going to make a bunch of weird things now. thnx
If you just Flatten the metal ribbons and scratched the metal to look shiny and they will be awesome like they were the first time. And I love all the videos you make they are awesome! and possibly if you read this comment you could make a video on remaking the same metal ribbons.
Dude, your videos are sick!! greetings from Chesapeake btw 😂😂
nice haha a couple hours away
Anyone else see the Flying Spaghetti Monster?? 😳
I would love to see you make a spiral cymbal
Pastafari !
Hello, what kind of wick is used 5:26 minutes? Good video. Thank you!
Yes!! Finally a new vid!! Sounds awesome. What was that meatball monster thing you put in for a sec haha.
The background music reminds me of the LA Noire theme, great vid too :-)
what if you drill a third hole in the middle than you could mount it on a high hat stand. with the high hat clutch on top you could change the pressure between the cymbal pieces and change the sound.
OH MY FLYING SPAGHETTI MONSTER this is amazing
Please upload more vids, more often. The cymbal project is down due to hard drive crash :( so it's up to you to entertain us drummers.
Nice idea, im gonna make one out og my old cymbals👍🏻
Love the videos! Any plans on doing a Q&A? Greetz from Austria
I'm with you the steel is more jingly is that a word and the cymbals have more of a open hihat sound
Yea the cymbal one has a brighter tone🤙🏼
Gow to do the last drum pattern?.
Nice work thanks
this might be... RAOUF around the edges, but it's got character
Love your videos and like the music you used on this and other videos. Who are the artists?
7:25 Oooh! That's really nice!
The cymbal-ones also have a nicer tonal quality, little bit more overtones than the metal ones.
Hey Dave I'm 11 and I got a kit a few weeks ago and I was wondering if you could do a video on cheap but good gear or a video for beginners in general
Can you make a video on drum tunning?
I much prefer the cymbal ribbons, as compared to the steel. The cymbal ribbons are clearer, brighter, and carry more definition. The steel ribbons are darker, which I would normally go for but for some reason not what I find appealing in this instance, but sound "dead."
make yourself a rack of those babies , you know different thickness for each one, or a different amount of metal pieces in each one
You inspire me
How about cowbell out of cymbals?
all glory to the flying spaghetti monster
really awesome
That destroyed A Custom makes me wanna cry like 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
Seems to be a Spaghetti and Meatball Monster at 7:12. Subliminal snack suggestion.
What product did you spray on those cymbals to clean them?
Great videos :)
It does look like the flying spaghetti monster indeed lmao
surprised you didn't try just b8 and just b20. would've liked to hear the differences.
this one is way better than the original
Dave, your videos are great.
I'd like to say that the beat featured around 1:40 is one of my favorites you've made... It's awesome, what is the sample from??
You should have an over head camera
What's the sound at the 2:27???
How about adding some jingles to it? Give it a try if you can
Nice, i am going to make a copy,Thank u so much for share........
