You should make a drum set out of china cymbals.
Drum Beats Online yes he should!
here we go again... haha
Agreed
you two need to colab more
rdavidr nah... make one out of rivets.
TURN A BASS DRUM INTO A SNARE!!
I don't think snare wires that big exist but that would awesome
22' inch snare
I don't think they make skins that big
@@localmusiclover605 my bass drum is 22" but you can find a bigger bass drum which is 24"
Its called a kick
Jk, but kool ideA
Holy China, you've been down too long in the midnight sea!
Oscar robinson -lll Damn Holy Diver
Oh now you’re drumming on meeeee
When drilling cymbals.. you should collect the dust or the drill cuttings or whatever . haha .. then make your own cymbal ..
Fejerick Torres there called bronze turnings
You beat me to this
@@BxCortez2050 by 3 years 😅
@@schouten99 .exactly
I liked the mod, made it sound better
65 Drums
RwaffiiSLKJ
I agree
Hahaha at 1:50 is that intentional how the drill matches the beat?
Probably. David is a genius
Thomas Hope i don't know how thst's "genius"
i also noticed! it was so f awesome
it seemed to match harmonically as well as rhythmically
Shane Monteiro ikr
I think all drummers appreciate how you line the camera changes of the drill up with the song haha
drill holes in the bell of a crash
I thought he was gunna make a religious Chinese person
lol idk 😂
I don't particularly like the sound either before or after.
Louis Mastrangelo This video makes that China sound not so good, I have it as an auxillary China and I think it sounds great. The video makes it sound really thin, but in person it sounds very full. not a lot of sustain but a full bodied China.
I personally have the 18" classic custom trash china from meinl and I love it for a mid range cymbal
Matt Marshall Like drums always
Higher pitch, slightly more splashy with the holes. I like people playing buckets and pans so really, for me, it's about style and end result. Das good!
Interesting drill melody
haha "I play the drill"
Paul Gilbert
+rdavidr What is the name of the song that plays in 1:08?
The holes definitely improve the attack and bite, absolutely love the Holy China sound, especially in the new mini versions. HOWEVER, Sabian gets broken returns like crazy... I think because of the configuration. So if you make one of these on your own, just do one or two rows of holes depending on the cymbal's size, and stay away from the edge of the cymbal where it turns back down.
definitely prefer the drilled one :D
A survivor I dont know man. The regular is too "crashy" for me :D But it's a matter of personal taste :D
MagneticWhistler Zildian chinas are still the best but I agree I like the new one
wuhan all the way, way cheaper and SO MUCH BETTER
i like it better not drilled
the mad scientist of percussion instruments.... cool video man
haha thanks man
I've owned many china cymbals in my time (I currently use 4 of them on my setup) and I found that my Sabian AA 17" Holy China is the best I've ever used. It seems that adding the holes quickens the decay and adds a touch more trash. That's what I noticed between the before and after footage other than the simple pitch difference. Awesome video!
Really liked the background music in this one. Thought the cymbal sounded better with the holes
Drill almost sounds like part of the song
Holy China, Batman! You answered my question before you knew I asked it! Thanks!
Without the holes it pretty much sounds like a crash...
Julius Ernst RIGHT?
Question: regular pattern of holes might favor certain frequencies. Wouldnt a random pattern create more different frequencies therefor changing the sound more dramatically?
I've always thought the middle row should have been offset from the outer rows.
i did this with a pair of Meinl hats- just 4 holes in a diamond pattern on the bottom cymbal. they already sounded decent, but after they were way better. faster, tighter and crispier, and zero airlock
Nice video. Just found your channel recently and like your work (both youtube vids and soundcloud). Has me looking at my spare parts and found objects in a totally new way. thanks.
I like the brightness of the china with holes.
I love it I think it would make a great stacking cymbal
now it now it sounds like a China
Gretsch_Drummer 9377 now it now it does.
OddCereal holy crap I'm retarded. lmao 😂
My favorite video of yours because china's to me are unique you can defintely modify them. I'm gonna get a kinda cheaper china and drill holes then make a stack.
That was clever what you did with the sound of the drill to the rhythm of the song in the background and I think definitely sounds better with the holes given for what sound one would want to use it for
I did the same thing with a zildjian crash I did the first three holes with a drill, I gave up shortly after and use a 55 ton ironworker punch machine. it took me the same amount of time to drill three holes is it took to punch the other 20 some odd holes.
the drilled one is i would prefer. It looked cooler and sounded cooler. Keep up the great work man. ☺!
I heard that the holy china from drummers who using it says that it is the loudest china and most aggressive china they every played and owned.
you even matched the shirt for before and after takes! should get a before and after t shirt so we know which take it is right away
The drilled one sounds more dry and trashy I love it
They both sound good lol. I think I like the Holy china better. Unique.
.
Love the drill bit/ music match up part, that's pretty neat.
I took a 16 in floor tom and through snares on it and turned it into a 16-inch floor snare I'd love to see you make one you do such a good job with your builds I bet you would show me s*** that I missed
This is not your fault David but honestly they both sound so terrible in my opinion. That's in no way a reflection of you and your playing/modifying abilities, it's simply the fact that the cymbal itself sounds awful as a china, again, in my opinion. I love your content man keep up the good work
when you think that its going to be a jesus china
Interesting. The drilled and un-drilled both have their own personalities, so it becomes a matter of choice. I liked the "drilled" a bit better myself. I really enjoy your vids. Keep them coming.
I like the holy china you made but I think it would sound less thrashy with half the holes.
The cymbal before sounds more like a crash cymbal than a china. I don't know if it's the mix or if the was supposed to like a Sabian AA fast china. Either way. Great video
another fire beat
You should make some sick hats like Sabian makes.
As always, AWESOME!
I asked for this year's ago so happy it finally happend
Awesome to see the 30$ drum set . Awesome china bro . You ever do stacks ?
try Grombal cymbal inserts too! Very cool!
I really enjoyed this video I use the 17in Sabian holy China (love it) and I've always wondered what the difference would be without the holes versus with the holes at I really like the sound that you got when you put the holes in it felt like it was more about trash cany sound And I really like that about it thanks for the video I wonder what would happen if you did that with a crash
I really like the new one
my opinion is. the cymbal was better with no holes.
holy cymbals are generally heavy and made for the holes to be cut.
the holes add more trash and shorten the sustain. they make good stack bottoms.
i want to see a stack. made of. a holy china a loud splash in the center and a holy fast crash on top.
*Holy china, you've been gone too long in the midnight see, oh don't you see what I mean?*
Only true metalheads will get the reference🤘🏼DIO
Tony YESSSSS
@@arsonality3797 niceee you got it hahaha
Tony Dio is awesome
Amazing music in the background. What’s the name of this soulful track?
It seemed choked before the holes. Too high pitched for that cymbal, like the cymbal needed to shed some weight. Hammering could possibly have the same results. It would have been nice to hear it with only 1/2 the holes. Find out at which point the sound starts to noticeably change.
I love your content I have just found you and subscribed
Both videos have clearly different EQs... it's impossible to take conclusions out of them.
I'd love to see this experiment with crash, ride and high hats too.
Really love watching all your cymbal work and would love more. That said, almost all of your videos are great.
you should try making a low volume cymbal just like zildjian's L80 series, it would be fun to watch! love your vids man
What if you put tambourine jingles in the holes? Would it give a rivet type sound or a ching ring type sound?
Before sounded way better!! The holes lowered the pitch way to much. It also has a funky decay now!
Would've been interesting to keep about 1/4 of the rivets in and then make the rest of the holes the larger radius, but I think the end result worked out pretty cool.
The most un-china sounding china I've heard. I really like my Sabian AXXtreme.
The sound got better. It is softer, lower, and even sustain has become longer. But this china is a bad example for an upgrade. Sabian B8 pro would be best.
hey rdavidr, love your videos. I was wondering, what's your thought on buddy rich and Big Band?
Congrats. You managed to make a Classics china sound playable. Horrid series of cymbals.
Bought a 18" Sabian B8 China for $40.Drilled same pattern as this&also drilled 3/4" holes on outside bend.
Lathed it down b4 I did holes.
Became a favorite with my band.
Then,it got stolen😢
Sounds darker!
I know an Asian priest drummer that would be interested in your holy China cymbal.
overall I prefer the version with the holes in it, but as a ride I think the non drilled version sounded better.
Bro! You had all the mics set up already. Why not a proper recording rather than camera audio?
Also...generally speaking...less material/lighter cymbal = lower pitch. Hence the lower and darker sound of thin cymbals compared to medium or heavy/rock cymbals.
its not the camera audio...
Oh. Sorry. It didn't sound like your past recordings of drums with overheads. Sorry.
I like how the China sounded with the holes! It sounds a lot more trashier to me. Can you do one with a 18 inch Wuhan cymbal
thought the cymbal sounded better with the holes in it. Cool idea, keep up the cool videos!
Definitely has a darker sound. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and showing the drum community this experiment.
I didn't know Hagrid could play drums
Seriously though, good job
Can i have that experimented china? Hahaha. Perfect for a stacks. :)
What is the name of the song that plays in 1:08?
I like that meinl ride you've got there can I get specs on it I'd like to get myself one
Turn a Snare into a Symbol stack
first time when i like your cymbal tuning!
try drilling the bell- should make it dryer
Everyone asks what the holes do not how the holes are doing
Always a pleasure to watch your videos Dave. Have you ever produced for any local rappers or anything? You have a ton of talent.
The cymbal still sounds pretty bad but it sounds a lot better than before great video btw!
I expected it to be a bit more trashy. Perhaps a light top hammering with a large hammer would spruce it up a little. Hell, you could throw a couple of those rivets back on it or stack it with a splash.
hahah the drilling went along with the song for a few seconds
I think it would sound good if you had one of each
It sounded really good with the back and forth of the two cymbals
Thanks I love your videos
I was watching this and I just realized I wasn't subscribed so there ya go. I'm more or so a guitar player but I love watching your videos I've been watching for like 9 months. Sorry I wasn't subscribed. :)
Interesting, but I prefer the before sound.
I liked the "holy" china better. What would happen if you would put some cymbal above it? like.. a stack?
diggin ya mpc 2000 shirt
@rdavidr Looking to modify a horribly thick 20" Zildjian ride from the 60s. Do you recommend lots of small holes or several big (o-zone) holes?? Thanks!
How is it that i cant seem to stop watching your videos? 😱
Notice the original sound Sample is so old that he's using the vintage tom before he rebuilt it.
I think
different kit
Yea I remember its from $30 I beleive
i have that meinl classic 18 china and think it sounds great without modding actually :D
Have you ever considered selling multiple velocity samples of your kits David? I'd buy one with fx cymbals in!
I thought the video was cool but i generally dont like smaller chinas
I think if the holes in the middle row had been staggered the sound would have changed more significantly.
you made this video the day I decided to buy a 21 inch holy china!?!?!?
Stave snare shell in the background, will it be in a future video?
Do I see a stave drum in the back at the very beginning? I've been waiting forever for you to do a stave drum build video! But if you didn't build that shell then you need to build one.
Nice video man!
i bought that exactly china together with a 15 china and a 12 splash, the truth is that the big china sounds horrible!
I also expected more of a difference. what about enlarging some of the holes?
