I have a strong belief that you are going to be announcing some endorsements soon. I am constantly browsing the Yamaha Artist page and there are 6 or 7 guys called Dave.
rdavidr big fan of all that you do. Loved the video as always. I know this is a but off topic (not to mention way late) but can you tell me the specific fabric you used on your pizza kick video? I want to make my own but I can’t tell what type it is from the video alone. Thanks for the help and keep up the great work :)
Robert Hewitt: My brother-in-law lived above a familywith a teenager. Kid was trying and trying to learn electric guitar but got too frustrated, I guess. He threw a Squire Affinity Stratocaster and a 25 watt Fender amp into the apartment dumpster...and my brother-in-law got them out, cleaned them up and kept them for backup gear! My sister bought me a cheap-ass no name snare drum at a yard sale for $5.00. I turned it into a righteous timbale. You just got to be on the lookout 24/7! LOL. Well, maybe not 24/7...
Something similar happened to me. Work for a office cleaning service and one of the buildings I was in charge of taken care of wad am old church. They had set aside stuff that was left behind and were planning on tossing. Seen a snare bag, two crash cymbals and cymbal stand in there pile so I asked if I could take them off their hands so they let me have them. Opened the snare bag and inside was a brand new Ludwig Aerolight, best and only bonus I got from the job.
I know this is an older video but I have been drumming for about 4 years and I remember this video introducing me to you and your channel and I fell in love with that snare. My cousin Josh got me into playing drums since he played when he was my age and we bonded a lot over music, he gave me tips on good gear, technique, etc. Fast forward a bit and Josh starts having heart issues and seizures and he has to live with his mom because he can't live alone in case he has more. He had a couple more but after a while he got better, he started being more healthy in diet, routine, basically started getting his own life back. Fast forward to just a few months ago in late June and when everything seemed better we were told he passed away in his sleep at a friends house from cardiac arrest, his friend said he fell asleep on his couch and he walked by and he was breathing and he walked by again later and he wasn't. Obviously we were all in shock because he was better, and in his mid 30's. We have the funeral and got to say the final goodbye, and not too long after I remember Josh had lived with us before moving into his own apartment and he couldn't take his drums with him, I remembered this because I had borrowed some of his cymbals and I promised him I'd give them back when he wanted them back. So I go up into the attic and find this exact snare. Needed some cleaning but obviously I would've done anything to restore it. Eventually got it finished and loved it ever since. I know this is a long and kind of odd comment on a 4 year old video. But I just needed to say thank you for bringing me back to a better time in my life when I first got started and remembering those fond memories and bonds we created over our passion. Thank you rdavidr, for being there for me without even realizing it. RIP Josh Thiele, the man that introduced me to my life.
It's a student snare, so you can imagine that sort of thing gets left behind when someone is no longer taking drum lessons or playing in the school band.
My high school had a few of these, and they usually got left by the wayside for deeper snare drums. Since they weren't well kept, they were always out of tune, and then never touched again
My school definitely isn't a school that has maple snares left behind. We have atleast 7 pearl 13x5 steel snares. I guess it's probably just based on the nearest music shop in the district. The closest store to my district sells the pearl starter kit (bell set, pad, snare, book, and sticks), I'm sure the store in your area and the area of wherever bearded diver found it had a ludwig starter kit. I actually got my starter kit from my sister's ex, who left the snare at his school. I never got a steel snare, planning on taking one before graduation to fulfill the empty hole in my life that is the size of a 13" starter snare...
That was the very first drum I ever owned. Those Ludwig piccolo snares comes with a set of bells and a practice pad for beginner band students. Kept mine for about 10 years and passed in on to my nephew to use with an economic drum kit he bought. Still sounds great too.
I love that you have so nicely restored what someone else thought was trash. I think it's good to take care of things. I love your beats also, by the way.
When they closed one of the middle schools in my city, they brought all the equipment from that middle school to the high school. I saw this exact snare and new it was coming home with me. Put that drum in my backpack and carried it around all day. Never left my setup. Awesome video!
Love the idea of using a q-tip in a drill to clean out lugs. Will use that soon. These snares are the ones that came with Ludwig band student kits in the 2000s. I got one in six grade, recently refurbished it with some bearing edge work and heavier hoops from DFD, now it's my go to for indie rock because it's so much warmer than what you'd expect. Great work as always sir, keep it up!
The new set up is so much nicer not only equipment wise but sound wise. In the older videos the mix of the kit sounded really off to me but now it sounds so much better I like it. Nice job
I’ve got the same snare (although I didn’t find mine in a dumpster) and I absolutely love it. I bought it thinking I’d use it occasionally but I actually use it as my main snare as it’s so good.
Dude! The 3 seconds it took to show how to correct warped heads was a game changer. I knew all about this but never thought of using a clamp to aid in the process. You rock!!!!
About 25 years ago I purchased a classic Ludwig Snare made in the 1950's , for $ 20. I got from a young kid who found it in a closet collecting dust. After I disassembled it, and cleaned it, and replaced the heads & snare wires. It looked and sounded so amazing, it instantly became one of the best Drums I have ever played. I found out from a collector in Modern Drummer magazine that this Drum was worth between $300 & $ 500 . I beat that Drum into submission , and traded it in when I upgraded to a better high end Drum kit. I sure wish I could get it back now. 🥁
Hey Dave. I know this doesn't help now but for future reference windex takes off anything ink based without damaging stuff. I also grew up in a shop and have straightened my share of bolts and a length of pipe works for that without marring the threads. You should also check out anti-seize for the threads and the nuts. It's anti corrosive and has a much higher melting point than the white grease you usually use. Love the vids. Keep 'em coming.
Ah I hate when that happens. Well at least you were able to figure out something else that worked. The creative problem solving is one of the things that really makes your channel interesting to watch.
I have this same snare. Got it in 2005 in percussion kit with that came with a xylophone, practice pad, snare, rudiments book, a pair of SD1s, and carrying case. I still have it lying around somewhere with the original Ludwig head and snare side. This video makes me want to clean it up and show it some love
Sounds great! Just like a Ludwig, which I have always loved. My workhorse is a 30 year old, steel, Ludwig Supraphonic (6x14), so I admit I'm a little biased toward Ludwig. That was a great find and gift that guy gave to you. I still love your channel, Dave!
A few additional tips: 1. When you have bent screws, heating them at the bend with a small butane torch before bending them back will work very well. 2. Lemon Oil is inexpensive and really amazing for cleaning and moisturizing wood shells. It can be found at most hardware stores and department stores. 3. For removing rust and cleaning metals, WD-40 works great. There is also an environmentally friendly food based product called Quik-Glo. Great videos...
Thanks for posting. Your hands on approach and the information you share is priceless. I'm a bass player that owns a &0's chrome over wood Ludwig guest drum kit. I appreciate your tips and practical knowledge.
"it's like a .22 going off...." - for sure! Piccolos are generally too much for my taste but if you know a light hitter , in a live setting this thing would help cut thru the mix.
Just found this snare collecting dust at the music store i teach at. It’s missing half the tension rods, detached snarewires from the throw off, but they were nice to give it to me for free and now im gona have a good time giving it new life ✌🏼
Yeah, i wasn't so lucky with brand. But I found a zimgar snare in the trash once. I got it, cleaned it up, replaced heads and gave it to an aspiring drummer.
Hi Dave ,i have a birch version of this, which was orphaned from a 90s Ludwig kit, they made a "go kit" out of birch, which was $1500 and didnt sell well.It was an e,bay $100 find from studio city LA.Its a great snare i.m.o.p.
This is hilarious. I just discovered your channel a couple days ago, but I was gifted one of these exact snares about 6 months ago. Buddy of mine was moving and found it in a closet so he gave it over. I wasn’t expecting much out of it, but figured it was a Ludwig and didn’t have any piccolos, so what the hell. My dad, also a drummer, restored it a bit for me and put the exact same heads on. Holy shit. Super useful, very warm. Works oddly well with my Pdp X7 shells. I only use one up and one down in my setup though. All my gear is literal hand me downs/extras from a seasoned veteran (my father). Anyway, I’ve been eating up your channel the past few days. Came across the thumbnail, recognized the snare and thought “no way” Felt compelled to comment.
Can someone help find out what the song is called from 4:31-6:08 please. I tried finding it on the sound cloud and other but no luck. Please help and thank you very much.
I once pulled a whole drum set out of a metal recycler dumpster. Had to find some hard to find tension rods, but was in workable condition. Cleaned it up, tuned up new heads all around and looked really nice. Sold it to a guy in another province in Canada, was a Christmas present to himself, since he wanted something in blue onyx finish.
This is nuts, I pulled an old Slingerland snare from the trash at my studio that had exactly the same problems, even down to the bent throw off and bent rim! The only reason I felt confident that I could fix it up was from watching this channel
Nice job fixing her up. What drum set is this and could you possibly do an updated rig rundown of everything you have? Also are you a meinl artist now?
I enjoyed this video. Once I had a pic snare given to me that was on its way to the trash can. I restored it and love it. Love your channel. Keep em coming.
We actually had the same snare at the last school I was at, it was shelved but I took it out and had a liking to it. Glad to see this one in good hands.
Considering that snare was found in the trash, the hoops did not look bad at all, of course, disregarding the slight warp lol! Nice find and pretty cool for someone to send it to you!
CaptainWhirlwind: Some people are stupid and don't know any better! Up in some part of Washington state that I'm not near, a woman was selling a Ludwig Acrolite snare drum for $50!!!! I looked up the one she was selling and it's worth way more than $50!
Shit that's nothing, I found a '72 Les Paul custom in a case in a pile of trash. Trailer house clean out. About shit my pants, had it for a while and sold it. Now I could kick myself in the face for selling it.
Best vid in a while. Keep this content coming! Oh and I had no idea a piccolo could sound like that. My ears and eyes have expanded my brain this morning.
musicguy1128 Meinl Extra dry dual 15 inch hi hats . My drum tutor has them they sound even better in person ! If you plan on getting them make sure you try them out because I’ve tried a few pairs and some sound better then others
reinis s the hats I’ve ordered are meinl byzance jazz thins 14” I like the sound of those ,however hi hats that sound good to me may differ to what you think sound good, go for hihats you like the sound of and are in your budget my advice would be to buy with your ears not your eyes and go to a local drum shop and whack a bunch of cymbals and find what you like the sound of , if you don’t have a local drum shop near mycymbal.com on RUclips are your next best option, hope this helps :)
If I'm not mistaken my daughter has the same snare. Hers came with the bells, stand, pad and case. I'm currently using it on my kit. Sounds pretty good, sound ring on or off.
wood piccolos almost aren't piccolos IMO. BTW halfway done with my pearl 13x3 steel resto-mod hot rod project that this channel inspired. the rest of the parts come in tomorrow :)
What vipersix3 said. Crank that baby down, and also back off that damper and let it ring a little. Of course it's all about personal preference though.
I subscribed anyway. I dig the way you come across. You seem very humble and you don't show off, often playing simple riffs that MANY can understand, whether new or, like myself, have been playing for around 40 years. I appreciate the way you teach and your general demeanor is very inviting. I have seen MANY others who "teach" on RUclips, but it seems more like they're showing off, as opposed to making something understandable and entertaining. So, keep in mind, I'd still love to hear you play a roll on that beautiful dumpster Ludwig snare.lmao Keep up the good work and I learned something new, being the floor tom leg upside down trick. I learn something new everyday!🙂👍🙏🙏🙏
A good piccolo is hard to beat. I personally play a 1984 Keller shell DW true piccolo. 13”x4”. Cracks like a whip and is so tuneable. Wooden piccs are highly underrated.
G'day, David! Wow! Nice job! You know, It's really amazing... The sound coming from this snare is totally awesome! Ludwig Rocker Elite (3"x13" Piccolo Snare Drum) in a Natural Maple Finish, billed as having "clean, resonant sound" offers a nice solid crack!! (these Classic shells are still, described as producing a "deep, & powerful" sound for the size.) Thank you for a great video! Cheers! :-) 🥁😊❤️
The new editing style is great! I love watching your videos and have been for about 2 years. Please keep going because they are so interesting and what you can do is amazing. Keep it up :)
My friend got a PDP maple 5x14 snare from a guy who found it in a dumpster. It was most likely dropped onto the strainer which was cracked in half. I put a new Gibraltar one on and the drum sounds great. It has the original factory head with a lot of the coating beaten off. The drum is basic black. He sold it to me for $25. SAVE THE DRUMS!!! :^)
I actually know where these snares come from! Back when all the kids in middle school were starting choosing instruments to play, we had a night where the local music stores would come by after school and sell the various instruments to the kids and parents. Makes sense for all players except for percussionists. They had sets of 2 octave glockenspiels and a small Ludwig snare with stands to practice at home with since we can't bring school drums home, duh. This snare is actually the one that they would sell as a 6th grade practice snare. I just so happened to get one of these sets to practice on, but after about a year and a half, I just practiced on a pad. Who wants their musician parents to hear you screw up paradiddles all day long. Anyway, it got put back in storage up until the time I was a senior in high school. I pulled it back out after cleaning out a closet and thought it would be an interesting addition to a kit as a side snare. I'll be damned if it didn't replace my old main snare in a few hours. The thing is a fantastic maple body shallow kit snare! I'm never getting rid of it!
I'm a guitar, drum, bass, ukulele, vocal instructor and a Ludwig piccolo snare sounds like 15 years of practice. I still have the glockenspiel but not sure where the snare ended up. Did tons of "all county" solos on that thing!
1) That snare sounds awesome 2) Your drumming is off the hook too 3) It would be the perfect intro to a live show: First the drummer on his own, then the rest of the band gets on and starts to play along, finally the star appears. I will tell my drummer to copy your playing note for note as our new intro. Thanks ;)

🤘🏻 and this is why I sent it to you. Killer work buddy.

You man, thanks for sending him that thing so we could all see the awesomeness of this guy's videos. THANKS!
The Bearded Diver Really do appreciate it man! You've got a shirt and stickers coming your way!
Send me one too!
rdavidr big fan of all that you do. Loved the video as always. I know this is a but off topic (not to mention way late) but can you tell me the specific fabric you used on your pizza kick video? Dude that snare sounds so good. Why can’t I find one in a dumpster?
Robert Hewitt: My brother-in-law lived above a familywith a teenager. Kid was trying and trying to learn electric guitar but got too frustrated, I guess. He threw a Squire Affinity Stratocaster and a 25 watt Fender amp into the apartment dumpster...and my brother-in-law got them out, cleaned them up and kept them for backup gear! How many dumpsters have ya checked?
Robert Hewitt Because its rare to find a drum in a dumpster.
grow a beard. you'll either find everything, or get knowledge to make everything. Maybe both
I wish i culd find an entire drum kit in a dumpster
dang it... i expected that thing to be bright as hell but it actually sounds awesome
MrSawlong - The CS head is definitely helping to focus the mids and subdue the ring.
The Hard Problem yh true. If you were to put an Ambassador, for example, it would sound much different.
Wow, thank God your not another JoJo mayer wannabe, well done, nice video.
My daughter and I found a 1967 Ludwig snare and Tom in the garbage, still have them in my studio

Yeah man, I’ve been playing this exact drum for around 10yrs now & I absolutely love mine fr.
Who the hell could dump out a maple snare?!
It's a student snare, so you can imagine that sort of thing gets left behind when someone is no longer taking drum lessons or playing in the school band.

Make a giant snare out of a bass drum!!
Rush 96767 That is a great idea!
Might be hard to get the snares lol.
Hell yeah, he could use chain link dog leashes for the snare wires, and a pair of old Levi’s for the straps....

Why didn't you keep the original heads on? They looked in good condition to me.
sure, good for sifting river gold, maybe, if you angle it just right.
I've played 'house kits' with heads worse than that!!! ;D
kodiak wild funny. Legit funny. Not being mean, just sayin.

That things sounds great! Nice drumming/groove as well :)
What's up, fellow christian drummer!
this has got to be my favorite snare build yet. amazing sound, i think i may start looking into smaller snares from now on
I just sold my Ludwig Rocker piccolo on Sunday and this video is making me regret it.
darkasthegrave maybe the person you sold it to threw it in the dumpster!
Don't sell anything, ever!
Yer nuts. I got a chance to buy a 10 piece Rocker kit (10 toms!), and I'm considering selling stuff. to have room.

A worn .22 cal cleaning brush works excellent on the lug openings.
Glad someone dug that out of the bin. Your reco skills are awesome.
You should try cleaning cymbals using some white board cleaner spray. It makes them really shiny and doesn't harm logos at all.
use Vaseline. You won't even have to buy anything. I use it on everything.
Yeah, i wasn't so lucky with brand. But I found a zimgar snare in the trash once. I got it, cleaned it up, replaced heads and gave it to an aspiring drummer.

I have one of those snare drums. It comes in a beginner set with bells and stuff.
I have one of these snares and its one of my absolute favorites, this video reminded me how good they sound.
Nice job fixing her up. What drum set is this and could you possibly do an updated rig rundown of everything you have? Also are you a meinl artist now?
ill do a set up tour soon!
I enjoyed this video. Once I had a pic snare given to me that was on its way to the trash can. I restored it and love it. Love your channel. Keep em coming.
seems like someone's kid went crazy and they gave up on life that day
Watching this kind of video is so relaxing as a drummer. It also excites me to learn more about drums and what to do when our drum broke.
Now make a snare drum from a metal trash can / bin!
you mean the st anger snare? (ive heard it was actually a ludwig vistalite)
Latin Percussion make a snare drum from a trash can lid, they call it the Raw Trash Snare.
We actually had the same snare at the last school I was at, it was shelved but I took it out and had a liking to it. Glad to see this one in good hands.
Those Dual Hats tho
Considering that snare was found in the trash, the hoops did not look bad at all, of course, disregarding the slight warp lol!
Nice find and pretty cool for someone to send it to you!
why would somebody throw away a snare with a GREAT WARM CRACK!!?
Great demo btw!
@@DrummerGrrrl David got an acrolite for $20 a couple of years ago I think (wish they were that cheap in England lmao)
They crazy...lol
Best vid in a while. Keep this content coming! Oh and I had no idea a piccolo could sound like that. My ears and eyes have expanded my brain this morning.
Damn those hi hats sound good
Agreed. What are they? Look huge next to that little snare
musicguy1128 The best cymbals ever. Meinl. I’m gonna guess some sort of Byzance Organic or something.
musicguy1128 Meinl Extra dry dual 15 inch hi hats . My drum tutor has them they sound even better in person ! If you plan on getting them make sure you try them out because I’ve tried a few pairs and some sound better then others
@@joeo4117
I want to buy them... Do you know any other ( maybe better ) byzance hi - hats?
reinis s the hats I’ve ordered are meinl byzance jazz thins 14” I like the sound of those ,however hi hats that sound good to me may differ to what you think sound good, go for hihats you like the sound of and are in your budget my advice would be to buy with your ears not your eyes and go to a local drum shop and whack a bunch of cymbals and find what you like the sound of , if you don’t have a local drum shop near mycymbal.com on RUclips are your next best option, hope this helps :)
I love piccolo snares! Good restoration.
If I'm not mistaken my daughter has the same snare. Hers came with the bells, stand, pad and case. I'm currently using it on my kit. Sounds pretty good, sound ring on or off.
Used the piccolo snare a lot in middle school and high school nostalgic to see it again
your mixing has come along amazingly david! and this snare sounds unreal
wood piccolos almost aren't piccolos IMO. BTW halfway done with my pearl 13x3 steel resto-mod hot rod project that this channel inspired. the rest of the parts come in tomorrow :)
Sounds great now. Great job. You saved it's life.
Tune up those heads it'll sound waayyy better!! Still sounds good though
What vipersix3 said. Crank that baby down, and also back off that damper and let it ring a little. Of course it's all about personal preference though.
I have the same snare.paid 20 at a pawn shop. Its been my main snare for 8yrs. Sounds amazing cranked down
this is cool but who did this to such a nice snare it makes me sad
I have this snare, $20 find on Craigslist. It’s great!
sounds good
I love the sound of piccolo snares… especially of higher pitch. Similar to that of Bill Bruford’s snare sound after he left Yes.
Thought you were about to hit that warped rim to the table saw blade.
Snare sounds good bro! P.S. I already use Distro kid and it is a solid service.< there is my unpaid endorsement! :^()
A good piccolo is hard to beat. I personally play a 1984 Keller shell DW true piccolo. 13”x4”. Cracks like a whip and is so tuneable. Wooden piccs are highly underrated.
Why are you not using your tama kit
the jj gamer Variety is the spice of life, my friend.
Dude the video is about the Ludwig snare in the first place
soulintake i know that , I am asking why he doesn't use his tama kit anymore
Awwww I wished you were selling that snare. I would buy it in a heartbeat. It sounds KILLER!!!!!!
With talent like this who the hell needs to play drums?
Great sounding kit all round. Good tuning man!! Snare is killer!!
My dad found a nice chopper bike from 1978 in a dump🤷♀️
I really like the idea of using the footage of you repairing it as add space, it’s more interesting than music tbh
I think the ex-owner of this snare is Chuck Norris
G'day, David! Wow! Nice job! You know, It's really amazing... The sound coming from this snare is totally awesome! Ludwig Rocker Elite (3"x13" Piccolo Snare Drum) in a Natural Maple Finish, billed as having "clean, resonant sound" offers a nice solid crack!! (these Classic shells are still, described as producing a "deep, & powerful" sound for the size.) Thank you for a great video!
Cheers! :-) 🥁😊❤️
I literally fell asleep watching this
You're not a drummer
ok
The new editing style is great! I love watching your videos and have been for about 2 years. Please keep going because they are so interesting and what you can do is amazing. Keep it up :)
This snare sounds like *trash*
(I’ll see myself out)
What a cool guy to send that to you. Great work fixing it up.
Nice work fixing it up...sounds great! Your beats are sounding nice too!
That sounds so good for a dumpster snare and so full and round for a piccolo. I can’t manage to make my 14x4 tama maple snare sound that good!
1) That snare sounds awesome
2) Your drumming is off the hook too
3) It would be the perfect intro to a live show: First the drummer on his own, then the rest of the band gets on and starts to play along, finally the star appears.
I will tell my drummer to copy your playing note for note as our new intro.
Thanks ;)
