I had a Ludwig black beauty snare a few years ago. I put diecast hoops on it, man that thing ripped. Great for outdoor live shows when you need volume and tone.
@Fiend S @Hans Grueber - I think a problem with that could be that the diametre of PVC pipes is measured on the inside (as opposed to the outside, with drum shells) and that it may be difficult to find fitting heads and rims!

I bought a gently-used Pork Pie copy of the Black Beauty for $100 about 10 years ago. Also 14” X 5.5”. Probably the best drum investment I’ve ever made. The drum sounds tremendous! It mikes well, cuts through well when needed, responds beautifully to ghost notes and...really, it does everything I’ve ever asked of it perfectly and is a beautiful beast. Thanks again, Billy!
One of my old drummers had that same snare around the same time period too. I used to to borrow it all the time. Coated ambassador for the batter and a double wide snare set, and then I would crank it way up like I do on all my snares for playing really heavy music. It sounded so, so good.
I made this snare a few years ago and messed up the vent pretty bad by going straight from the pilot to a 1/2 inch bit. Stepped bit is the way to go. Thanks for everything!
You're right I do NEED that snare. When can I expect it to be delivered? Haha. Nice job man, sounds great. I love how you try to refurbish or repurpose all this stuff, too many people are quick to give up on things and just toss em if they see a blemish or something goes wrong. Subbed. Take it easy.
Just for reference, right now on eBay for just $258 including shipping you can get a used 6.5x14 nickel over brass DW snare. So while it’s fun to build drums, and that’s not to be overlooked, it’s not really any more economical than buying used drums. Yes this drum cost half of a typical newish real Black Beauty from Ludwig, and of course much less than a vintage one. But on the other hand, if you don’t own a drill press, you can buy a similar drum that’s also not a Ludwig but has the same basic design for a similar price. No disrespect to rdavidr for building this. It’s cool.
Literally got a pdp 14x7 black nicel brass snare for 150$ 3 years ago it’s been my main snare ever since. Love the pop and body they have. Specially miced up

Hey @rdavidr l hate those plastic straps so l use 5/8" grosgrain ribbon that you can buy by the yard at most fabric or craft stores...much better and you can choose a flashy color if you like!
Don’t know how people can dislike this. It’s an awesome looking and sounding snare. Bad part is, side beside, probably not much difference besides a spun one piece shell and a welded shell?
very cool!! I bought a pre-drilled Wordlmax black nickel over brass shell from DFD and it's great!! The triple flanged hoops that I had were not working well. I tried many different gaskets, even no gaskets, and still no luck. I finally ordered some diecast hoops and that cleared everything right up! So, I was curious to see how those TF hoops fit on yours, but looks like they fit no problem? And easy to tune?
I found a beat-up Supraphonic at Goodwill once...missing most of the lugs etc Cost me $5. Took it to a local drum shop to buy parts and the owner overheard me talking to the parts guy and he explained to me that he had a sale of a complete Bonham kit lined up that coulnd't go forward because he just needed a Supraphonic to complete the kit and offered me $400 in store trade for the shell. I grabbed a brand new brass snare and three Zildjian cymbals out of his personal collection he kept next to his desk in his office. That was the last time I thought I needed a chrome snare.
I considered building a run of acrylic snares by buying a huge acrylic tube and cutting it into many pieces, but this video shows that the shell is just a drop in the budget bucket. The hardware costs a couple hundred bucks, which is why any decent snare is usually around $300 or more. You’re just paying slightly more than the hardware cost.
Hint... buy el cheapo drums at flea markets, pawn shops, yard sales etc... A $20 5 piece-o-s set with dented heads and torn wraps can be a gold mine of lugs, lug screws, hoops etc...
Richard Marshall well yes. But you get cheapo lightweight hoops, bottom of the barrel lugs, barely functional strainers, etc. you’re not going to find tube lugs, cast hoops, or anything nice. I have a Yamaha 12 lug marching shell, but chances are low that my $20 drum set find will include 12 lug hoops. I see your point, but to build a snare out of junk gets you a junk snare. I’ve done it. It sounds pretty bad. Ordering parts like the above video is about as cheap as you can get for something you’d want to use and feel proud of.
@@RyanAlexanderBloom I have collected drums since 1974. I have classic ludwigs, pearls, tamas, yamahas, slingerlands, mapex, sonor, yaddah. Drums go bang or boom, cymbals chick or ting or crash. I have enjoyed and proudly played great drums and crappy drums without prejudice or regret, and shall continue to do so. YMMV.
Richard Marshall I’ve owned plenty of bad drums and just a few that sound good. I wouldn’t want to build drums from scratch that don’t at least stand a chance of being on the good side. That’s all I’m saying. And to get there you have to spend a couple hundred bucks. Like in this video. You can play whatever drums you want, but you don’t want to be selling custom drums made of garbage parts. That’s the point I’m making. Components matter a lot in snare drums. I loved the sound of a no-name brass pawn shop drum I had but the chrome peeled off the hoops, the lug inserts routinely tore out of the lug casings, and the only snare head I ever actually broke was on that drum. So i bought a Black Panther to replace it. The sound is actually better and it’s never given me trouble. So you see, every drum goes boom and most can be adjusted to sound good, but when it’s your #1 snare, it should work correctly in clutch situations.
That's not quite a Black Beauty clone though (spun shell), this is more like a Black Magic. In fact I believe Ludwig uses the exact same shell for that series.

Is there any sources or tips you would recommend for any of the drilling processes for the parts to be assembled? You rock btw
Regarding your used snare straps, we were in the middle of recording a few years back, and the drummer's snare strap broke. I fashioned up a quick and dirty replacement out of a nylon shopping bag handle, and finished the session.
I've used a doubled-up strip of gaffer tape. It worked so well that I left it on, in fact. As would duct tape...in fact, Premier used to use strapping tape for their straps.
That thing sounds killer man! Great work.

@Fiend S @Hans Grueber - I think a problem with that could be that the diametre of PVC pipes is measured on the inside (as opposed to the outside, with drum shells) and that it may be difficult to find fitting heads and rims!
I made 2 x 10" PVC drums back in the 1980s. They sound good but are extremely heavy.
