Hey David, I happen to be the guy that sent you the original listing from Facebook. I’m still mad at myself that I couldn’t find the listing a second time to send better pics, but I’m glad you were able to find one for much cheaper. Keep on rocking, man!
Not only has the production quality, style, and editing improved, but MAN David, your playing has gotten so good over the years! One of my favorite channels for years now. Keep doing you bro
The snare bed you described is typical for Ludwig. Some of the widest snare beds in the industry. Some say that's part of the "secret" to the great Ludwig snare drum sound,. It also allows you to install 42 strand snares with no issues whatsoever. The Combo kits were available in the late 1970's and early 1980's.
Similar to the “patented” Infinite Snare Bed INDe is using now. It may not be original to them, but the INDe drums sound F’ing incredible. One of the most dynamic drums I’ve ever owned.
It sounds pretty good actually for a plastic snare drum great review. Edit:Just because it sounds good for a plastic snare doesn’t mean it sounds good 😂
I LOVE how dead that sounds. It would be amazing for many electronic genres, and I love that the attack has very little high end but it’s still hard hitting.
I love that you are playing this snare with the Ludwig Standard drum set. I have one and I love it. Your Combo badge is the same shape as the Standard badge.
Dave! Your a brave man! At first I thought it was a Ludwig Standard. And YES! Plastic lugs terrify me also. Yamaha experimented with the Stage Custom Nouveau series which were a composite that stripped and crack terribly. I also recall some Ludwig’s being a soft white plastic which I almost had a fit over! Lost faith in Ludwig for 30 years. This one doesn’t sound half bad. Great video and appreciate all of the fun.
Gotta love the oversized boxes when buying gear. I bought an LR Baggs M1A and they threw the dang thing by itself in a shoebox. Luckily it still worked.
That snare sounds like a great option for an auxiliary snare.. tone is reminiscent of the Pearl fat and skinny snare.. I actually like the way it sounds
I would have liked to have heard this with a decent head and a higher tuning. The dot head and low tuning make it sound like everything from 1978, which is how every drum with that tuning and head combination sounded.
You always have videos making stuff. I've yet to see you cover anything like it but hear me out. Making a reverse dot head out of a regular head with a sticky mouse trap. And making the bass drum beater patch out of a sticky mouse trap. I've done it before. The head didnt come out as well as I though but I think it'd be a cool video for you.
CS dot tuned low sounds ok. Buddy Rich played a Fibes synthetic snare.. crazy crisp & responsive. This Ludwig may not be quite the same quality but a coated ambassador & tuned higher could make for an exceptional tone with crack & minimal ringing. Best to fit some higher quality lugs to crank it up though.
Does your evaluation of “sounds good” come from the cleaning and reassembly of the drum, or from the two under-head adhesive discs you applied to the batter head? I’d say that your assessment is spot on, it does sound good.
I cannot believe out of 40+ years of playing the drums I have never heard of a plastic snare ...learn something new everyday...sounded good by the way...definitely wouldnt tune this snare to high!!! LOL!!!
It reminds me of an 80s Octoplus snare my brothers old drummer used. Don't like that low dead sound but I can hear it would work well for that 80s vibe.
Have heard b4 that the material of the drum shell doesn’t matter so much as literally anything else about the drum - bearing edges, hoops, tuning stability, consistency in the shape of the shell and the skin are all factors that usually determine the distinct sound of different drums than different woods or metals
I saw that FB marketplace listing for the "ultra rare prototype plastic snare" and also laughed at the absurdity of the price. I get it, it's vintage, it's uncommon, but that doesn't mean it's valuable.
1. Put 40 into new heads (diplomat reso and a coated two ply) and Gibraltar snares (they're cheap). 2. Crank up the reso (not too tight). 3. Experiment with the batter tuning. 4. Experiment with the snares.
my first snare drum was plastic a MAESTRO.....TRIPOD STAND AND CYMBAL ATTACHED...also had plastic hoops, hoops lasted 2 days...threw out drum when we were told there was no replacement hoop available...this was in 1962..would be 4 years later when I got my 1st set....used MIJ gold sprk...with red sprk FT...recovered in walnut contact paper...played until I bought new Ludwigs in 1970.
I've got some 14"D x ¼" CPVC I made a snare out of. It sounds ok even with my not so perfect bearing edges. Still have about 4' left I plan to make a floor tom out of. Only regret is not taking more from work as I had everything from 6" to 22" diameter scrap pieces, I could have made a whole set. 😥
I have been binge watching this mans content for the past few weeks and the 2 things I have learned is first off the heads are super important for sounding good. Second off I really wanna pat his head and facial hair. It just looks so soft and full. Thats the more important one.
The low tuning sounds kind of like how whacking a UFO case would sound. The plastic hardware is definitely an interesting idea, if not practical for longevity.
Hey David, I've been wanting to actually bring something up to you. Would you be willing to work on a Remo drum? It's got an Acousticon she'll, and actually sounded ok, but the hardware on it sucked. I would love to see if you could use it as content for your channel. Keep up the good work.
Everyone's always comparing it to their own snare like oh my God it sounds amazing but you got to realize that it sounds like this because it's tuned properly and if you tune your drum properly it would probably sound a lot better.
I think the only use for this is that lower tuning. Oddly enough that plastic 'thunk' really lends itself to more modern music. I can easily hear this on some electronic dance, r & b or funk. It's thin enough to not compete with the bass/kick and yet has enough bite to let you know it's there.
That snare drum doesn’t sound bad at all. It sounds pretty good to me but Then again I prefer a lower tuned snare. In all honesty I’m very surprised with the overall sound. I was expecting it to sound like a Hello Kitty snare drum and it doesn’t at all. Very cool find!
I’ve got nothing against Ludwig or old American drums in general (I own a ‘61 Slingerland myself), but the plastic lugs are a perfect example of the types of weird decisions American companies made with their hardware in the ‘70s and early ‘80s that ended up costing them dearly when Tama, Yamaha, and Pearl showed up with good prices AND good quality. From Ludwig’s ridiculous P-81 snare strainer and plastic-handled wingnuts on their Modular hardware, to Slingerland’s crappy Magnum hardware, to Gretsch’s lousy straight bass spurs and clunky tom mounts, to Ludwig’s refusal to design a fast and quiet chain-and-sprocket bass drum pedal to replace the Speed King, the writing was on the wall for significant market loss once the Japanese shell manufacturing caught up. It’s fortunate that Slingerland, Camco and Rogers were the only major casualties, because that list could have easily included Ludwig.
Please, which model is the Earthworks microphone on the snare top head? I own a 3 set of Eartworks microphones and I've never used them directly on snare drum.
Yo the plastic bottle packaging isn't the worst idea. However the best thing I have seen is rolls of paper towels. I wish more people shipped things with rolls of paper towels.
Not gonna lie, it could be the low tuning but it sounds kinda bucket-y. I wonder if sticking some metal lugs on it could help open it up to higher tunings.
Would you buy a snare made of plastic?!
No
Yea. Why not???
not this. maybe a 3D printed one.
Maybe, but not for 400$ for sure.
I don't see why not
I would love to hear what it sounds like in higher tunings.
He mentioned that the plastic lugs looked like they would snap if he tried that.
@@krusher74 What about replace them with metal hardware?
Same. maybe try some diplomats.
I don’t think it would like it.
@@badgerello Agreed, hence lighter heads like diplomats.

It sounds like a box that you tuned REALLY well, but is still a box.
The shell looks like an avocado..
Lol! I though of a snare with goose bumps myself
it does
Avocados, the ingredient in guacamole that holds the good stuff together. I see a correlation.
It would look GREAT in green!!
It actually has a good 80s gated reverb cigarette carton sound.
very specific but exactly
rdavidr: "Lets play this thing and hope it doesn't snap in half"
This was the highlight of my day. Classic!
I surprisingly dig the sound. Sounded great for the style you were playing. The low tuning fits it well.
Not only has the production quality, style, and editing improved, but MAN David, your playing has gotten so good over the years! One of my favorite channels for years now. Keep doing you bro
Maybe you can make your own plastic snaredrum and do a comparison between yours and the Ludwig
Yeah the guy even included the spare plastic you need for that 😉
CPVC

Maybe it's just me but I think it sounds like a piece of paper
@@Easypeck I know what you mean.
I think that it has its uses. Really unique sound, could be useful as a side snare or something.
Sounds like what’s it’s supposed to. Not that good.
@@Easypeck it was the “70s fat snare” tone without the tone
I have an old Remo "Acousticon" Mastertouch piccolo snare. It's essentially just sawdust and epoxy. It actually sounds pretty darn good!
As you played it, it sounded worse, so I guess the lugs wouldn't hold tune because the shell is plastic
I LOVE how dead that sounds. It would be amazing for many electronic genres, and I love that the attack has very little high end but it’s still hard hitting.
I think the pulp in the orange juice bottle acts as a soft cushioning 😂😂😂😂
I think it was all in the plastic recycle bin and the seller didn't want to bother repacking it.
The star of this show is that gorgeous Crash of Doom.
I really dig it! You played to it’s strengths when doing the setup and it paid off
I love that you are playing this snare with the Ludwig Standard drum set. I have one and I love it. Your Combo badge is the same shape as the Standard badge.
Should make a suitcase kit with a UFO case and this snare...

Dude I would love to hear it with some metal lugs. Definitely curious about how plastic responds at higher tunings!
I know this is a snare video, but that kick tone was 👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾
I think this would make for a good ballad snare actually, or like an fx drum to put on the left side of the high hats and throw a ching ring on it

Those earthworks mics are phenomenal.
Capable of reproducing the naff sound of this snare perfectly
A transparent Ludwig snare drum from 1979 (9th grade) was the best drum of any type I've heard in my life.
It was most likely acrylic.
Well it still sounds better than my snare😅
how!? the stock snare with my (literally free) drum kit sounds better than this

I think it sounds great. Better lugs would probably make a nice upgrade.
David, can you a demo with a one ply batter head ? Thanks !
I love experimenting with drums and watching you doing this video is astounding. I love your content man!
The snare beds here are the same as they did on the Vistalite snare drums - they simply flattened the bearing edges at each end.
5:50 it might help to tune in a star shape pattern

I actually love how that drum sounds!!! 🤯🤯🤯🤎🤎🤎
I'd put a fat cat 30 strand strainer on it, Evans st dry top, hazy 300 bottom. Damn now I gotta get one of these just to mess with it 😂
You make my day everytime you upload a video
rdavidr proving yet again, that the drummer makes the drum set
i know it's about the snare but dang that Ludwig kit itself..... now that's pretty!
You have the hand hammered Sonor to try out on a kit one day.😉
This man can tune anything
Really liked your drumming in this video.
The low tuning sounds kind of like how whacking a UFO case would sound. The plastic hardware is definitely an interesting idea, if not practical for longevity.
Nice sounding, dry and punchy snare! But the kick sounds HUGE! Like It!

I would definitely by a Vistalite product. I likely wouldn’t buy this drum but I really enjoyed your video & deconstruction.
Sounds good to me. Cool timepiece and cool piece of Ludwig history. 👍
Hey David, great video, TNX !! Are those hollow stamp 15" new beat hi-hats?
these are actually some 16s I just got. Def not new beats, theyre way too thin.
I’d be tempted to use it for recording because of the wet slap sound it has.
Great sound
I was waiting to hear a roll or some licks..to get my full opinion..but the snare sounded pretty good !
I saw this for sale too. Was wondering what it sounded like.
Nice groove and jam
Yoooo that is PHAT! Lmao I didnt expect that haha
So, what kinds/quantities of supplies/parts/hardware/etc. do you keep on hand?
Totally off topic, but I love your kick drum tone in this video. How'd you get that dialed in?
The juice is to make sure that the shipping doesn’t cause the drum to be beaten to a pulp- just eventually beaten as intensed

How do you safely exchange money and products over Facebook marketplace when shipping?
Honestly, at the end, it sounded great for a synthwave kinda snare sound.

Could care less about the plastic snare but what I really enjoyed was the Zildjian oriental. What size is that beauty?
Now i want something like an inch thick reinforced nylon shell tho i feel like that would be badass
Why TWO vinyl circles on the underside of the batter head? Surely that affected the sound too much?
2 circles plus gaff tape on the reso side and muffler cranked. lol
Where do you get the vinyl circles?
Great drumming
How are you liking the SweetRide? I absolutely love my 21", crashability and bell are pretty idealistic for me.
