Part of the reason I bought that gong for the gong hihats was to turn it into a flat ride. Its some old Zildjian gong/cymbal thing. Theres a hole to mount it on a stand, plus holes to mount it like a gong. Well, I didnt see much use in it in either configuration so I had it converted into a flat ride!

Lathing a GONG into To A FLAT RIDE - ft. Nicky Moon Cymbals
Pleasure working with you brother🙏Killer drumming at the end ‼️
Likewise! You killed it as well!
@NickyMoon wow man that looks profesionally-big-company made!
Congratulations you are very talented.
@@alessandrogambino420 glad you dig it!! It’s amazing what you can achieve in a garage with a bit of hard work
Beautiful cymbal. Great work.
That tone of the flat gong sounds really killer
You should use the cut-out circle of the gong as a huge picture frame. With a picture of us playing the gong hi hats.
Yes yes yes yes yes
So gay
haha I agree xD
I love that idea haha
YES! God yes!
Can't tell if the converted cymbal was an improvement because it was so much quieter. Obviously the gong was trashy and loud and I thought, sounded good recorded.
Gorgeous results visually.
Freshly hand hammered/lathed cymbals take a few months to fully open up sonically - the bronze literally has to decompress and heal from the trauma of the cold work for a it to be able to fully vibrate 👍🏻👍🏻
@@nickymooncymbals I did not know that. Thanks for replying!
@@tuskedbeast my pleasure! Thanks for watching the video 🙋🏻♂️
You have to bury it in the dirt for a couple months. Lol
@@nickymooncymbals awesome explanation
What I like the most about David is he's calming. Even when he plays; doesn't get too hype but you see it on his face that he is feeling the beat. In general, I don't believe a content creator has made me smile more while saying/doing so little as he does sometimes. And plus his beat choice is top tier, mans makes elevator music bops and I'm here for it.
Amazing looks.
Amazing-clear-stick-defined sound.
Sounds like it suits your set David.
First off, great wrap on that kit. Screams 80’s is such a great way.
Second, not only did this gong-to-ride come out phenomenally, the motion of the metal as you were playing was a joy to see in and of itself.
Great work by @NickyMoon! This one’s a keeper!!🤘🏻🤘🏻
Thank you sir! So happy to hear that you enjoyed it :)
Looks and sounds great.
Using a gong like this is wrong, especially in a song. But I guess everyone will just go along with this Hong Kong ping pong donkey Kong long gong song.
Also...send me that flat ride yo.....
yo
Lol I spit out my drink reading this
Dude this flat ride is fucking sick, amazing job
⚡️😎🙏
Need some flat-hats now
The transformation of this is incredible
The finished product sounds incredible! Dang!
I love the sound of this cymbal. Flat rides are totally my thing
Turkish gong. Our high-school had one. Yeah, you can use the hole to stand mount it, but I thinks its actual purpose was to make it easier to lathe like they do other cymbals.
good explanation of the hole
That has gotta be one of the most gorgeous cymbals I've ever seen
Didn't know what to expect but that is one of the best jazz rides I've ever heard.
That is possibly the most beautiful cymbal I have ever heard 😭
Beautiful sound
I own 3 NickyMoon cymbals. They are amazing. The spectrum of frequency compared to mass production cymbals is night and day. If you're on the fence about buying from Nick....just do it
Wow, I'm legitimately impressed. That flat ride turned out awesome. Sounds sweet af.
Damn i love watching that cymbal WOBBLE 😎
Nicky deserves more subscribers and attention
Thnx brother 🙏
So beautiful watching the lathing process just the way everything comes off so beautifully... An amazing looking end result
I said "oeeeeh" out loud when I heard the new cymbal, amazing
Great video. This cymbal sounds great. What a fun idea to turn a gong.Ha. I think that's a song.
Your edits keep getting better and better! I love the juxtaposition of you playing and him making the flat ride.👍
Love the sound…it’s a keeper! Better yet, turn it into a give away so I can get my hands on it…or…sell it to me!!
Quite possibly the best ride I've heard
that sounds wonderful
Pretty cool to see it “work and wiggle” when you play!
I spotted a CFH tattoo on his arm. That’s great! I’ve been follow him since a lot of time thanks to my friend Thomas Testa of Head Custom Cymabals! He is the man!
Good eye!! (Yes, I love Pantera) Thanks for the ongoing support!!
@@nickymooncymbals that's great cuz I initially thought you looked a little like Phil in the Vulgar Display era haha. Great results with this flat ride, by the way. Stick definition is tops!
@@nickymooncymbals 🤘🏻😌
I’m impressed.
Sounds awesome great job long time watcher you do great videos keep up the good work 🥁😎
Sounds great!
Cool, so cool, lovely work
geez those shells are beautiful
A lot darker then I thought it would. Nice second ride.
worked over gong ride flat sounds great. congrats.
The "before" sound was neat-ish, but the "after" sound is absolute gold! Love it!
Love that Nicky Moon logo
Wow! Gorgeous tone! I'm not going to lie I was very skeptical it was going to sound remotely as good.
Woah! What a transformation!
🙏😁
That one dislike was probably from the gong
🤣
LOVE IT!!!
Dang that sound and looks awesome!!
One of a kind.😎
Nicky Moon killed it
Damn nick made his work on the cymbal look effortless (even though I know he put a lot of blood sweat and tears into that) all around the end product is awesome
Thanks for watching and I’m glad you enjoyed it 🤡
@NickyMoon modified a few cymbals for me. Dude’s a genius‼️
that is a fantastic sounding ride cymbal
Nicky is the real deal! Amazing skills that dude has.
Very cool project... I enjoyed seeing the new cymbal come to life. Nice playing, too!
Seems like a perfect ride for jazz....
Turns out that the real flat rides were the friends we made along the way ❤
Cymbal sounds like a fucking dream, i love it
Incredible!!
Thanks Andrew 😃
that is a very cool ride now!!
I would love to see Nicky take one of these and hammer a bell in. His work is amazing.
Damn it's got some sizzle in it afterward, real nice.
Very, very cool video! 😀👍 Must've slipped right past me when it was originally uploaded, though! 🤔 It popped up in YT's recommendations only today, while I was watching/listening to a video on the Drum History Podcast channel with Nicky being their guest of that episode 🙂 And that whole kit sounds amazing! 😍👍 Dream kick sound, and that snare must be Yamaha's equivalent to Ludwig's Acrolite (= my favourite snare on this channel) 🙂
That flat ride sounds excellent. Good job Nick!
Thank you so much!
That is an amazing cymbal
Awesome!!
Give it a couple of month due to the hammering and that beauty will sound like a beast. Great job Nicky. Masterpiece. 🔥
This is a great video
That flat ride sounds so bright
Oh ... the gong was the King here ... appreciate the work on the gong into cymbal, but nah man ... I was so jamming on the gong.
So smooth
Awesome nick.. nice work🔥🔥
Thanks brother!
Triplet hammering!
Fantastic
DAMN that sounds silky smooth in the after! ...I kind of enjoyed the tones you were getting it the 'before', but that end result sounds like a killer jazz ride to be sure. Nice work Nicky! Look at all that flex... mmmm
Stoked that you dig it! Thank you kindly 🙏
Man miss that Session Studio Select kit!
ill set it up for the next vid!
@@rdavidr Doo ittt
Why in the hell you did that. That’s the coolest ride I’m the world. Ok I’m still watching.
nicky kills it once again
🙋🏻♂️ thank you my friend
Lovely playing. Man, that thing now has a beautiful, clear, cystalline sound... and I liked it before it got the treatment!
That gong in cymbal mode (before modifying) is like all GarageBand drumset ride cymbals in a nutshell
I have always liked the sound of flat rides but the lack of volume makes them impractical for my uses. That one sounds good too but you may need to close mic it.
Who knows, maybe rdavidr will build some amazing diy amplification system out of stuff he found at a yard sale 💫
0:09 i think thomas pridgen would love these hi hats
Once it became a ride, it has avery laid-back smooth jazz sound
amazing work holy shit
From what can be picked up by the mic, that cymbal (gongbal?) has a really sweet sibilance to it. Kind of like a cymbal that would be used a lot on an ECM recording session from the 80s.
Wow, didn't expect that would sound that good! Great job-
😬👍🏻👍🏻
That's probably the nicest sounding ride I've ever heard. A bit quiet, though. Some comments suggest that it might need a few weeks to get all the stresses from cold working out?
Sweet cheeses! He made that thing sing! Not heard about Nick before, but he obviously knows his stuff.
Thanks James. Glad you dig the cymbal!!
flat rides ftw
Such a cool transformation. It sounds amazing! 😊
😬🙏
I have a sabian symphonic gong that’s also 26 inches and I can confirm that those sounds are accurate when he hit the rim
always happy when I see that pretty face on my recommended
Flat rides are cool but man would I have loved to see a hand hammered bell. Great stuff nonetheless
7:37 *now I know why the cymbal bell is so important: for structural stability allowing for more resonance*
@Ken Fullman then it wouldn't be a flat ride????? What a busted ass comment.
that sounds beautiful 👏🏻🔥
🙏😊
Amazing transformation! From gongy, dull, and vaguely trashy to delicate, smooth, and glassy. I say, keep that "new" flat ride.
Super happy that you enjoyed it 😎
I honestly thought you were going to say "I'm going to send this cymbal to Lance Campeau 😄
Gong ride❤
Cool video, but I really would have liked to hear the cymbal by itself to fully understand what Nicky was able to achieve out of that nasty gong.
i definitely plan to use it more, so you should get a better understanding over time.
I bet Eloy from Sep would crack that badboy or at least make it cry in gong form. Mr. Moon does some pretty work, sounds good too. cool to see it flexing so much since the bell is gone.
Eloy is a beast ⚡️🇧🇷
Hell yeah, another rdavidr vid
Gosh that sounds yummy!
I love this
