Awesome results! A couple years ago I purchased a set of the Sabian Quiet Tone series for practicing at night (I’ve got three young kids). It is the single best investment I’ve made in the last ten years. I’m finally able to play whenever I want. I use the RTom Black hole silencers for the drums... seriously life changing.
Definitely a different kind of metal working. The best thing to do, for noise mitigation, is to sound proof your practice space. Mesh heads feel different than regular heads, a foam pad feels different than a bass drum head, etc. The biggest part of Mitigation is the Bass, as bass (lower frequencies) can actually move THROUGH walls/floors/windows/etc. (think of the car that pulls up next to you and all you can hear is the bass). Full blown honest to good recording studio grade sound proofing can get rather expensive (building "false walls" for pockets of air, etc.)and eat away at square footage (if you start with a 15x15 practice room, you will probably end up with a 12x12 when all is said and done). Don't forget the bass traps (look it up) in the corners and echo deadening foam on the walls. Best thing to start with for a sound proof space is a Concrete filled, cinder block wall building. Then you are only worried about sound proofing the "ceiling" and the aesthetics of the space (drywall, echo reduction, paint, carpet, etc.).
I really like videos like these. Don't get me wrong, I love the knife videos. But your approach to doing a task/project is always awesome!very enjoyable and entertaining, and inspiring. Thank you!
Few years ago a friend of mine asked me if I can turn his broken cymbals into something usable - he doesn't use it often, but I made him a ribbon crasher :) And had greatest lesson of safety when working with high speed machines and relatively soft and long materials.
While thinking about the fixturing you're using i thought: Dang thats gonna be hard to perfectly line up the last row of holes with the first one! - 9:42 Looks like you didnt bother to figure out the maths either ;) Still was a fun idea to try
Yo walter. Long time no talk. Saving for a sword. Awesome vid. 🤘 I bought the sailor knife with hamon. It’s doing well. As i hope you are. Keep rockin!
I thought you might throw in some rivets in some holes for that shhhhhh sound. (Am I too old). Nice work. I looked for a good DB meter for my I phone and never found a good one. What are you using? Good video. Thanks!
I was repping at a trade show a number of years ago when Zildjian first released their L80s and I was very, very impressed with them. The L80s weren't bad sounding either for what they were. If I'd had a spare £250, I would have bought them then and there...
Drilling the bell out would reduce even more volume -much of the cymbals weight is in the bell ,and due to its shape, adds to much of a cymbals projection, high end frequency and overall volume --
A little bit, because it can't keep track of the flexing, but it's probably not a big deal for holes because it's just plunging straight down instead of removing a specific amount from the surface.
Now spackle all of the holes with some OSI SC-175 ACOUSTICAL CAULK (yes that's a real thing) Just cover the back side in some self adhesive poly film and splooge away! I'm sure the result will be a much quieter .. and ugly... cymbal 😊 -✌🏼
Has a practice cymbal to not annoy the neighbors. Hammers metal on an anvil all day long. 😅
You have demonstrated precisely why I have never bothered to try making one of these.

Up next: Walter Sorrells hand winding guitar pickups tutorials (no seriously, I want to see those videos!) :)
Very nice change of pace. Lots of fun.
Thanks,.

Very fancy. Nice equipment!

More cowbell!!!
Thanks for sharing!

You make knives AND you play drums?!?! I like you even more now.
Very cool!

thanks for sharing the video
That was kewl. I always wondered about if doing this would be worth it.
I think a Wipeout drum solo video is in order...
I was hoping for a drum solo...
cool project , I got inspired
I had no idea you were a fellow drummer as well... see you on the practice pad Mr Walter!
How do you sharpen this circular knife? Very interesting design.
Next video, Walter makes his first symbol? It would be cool!
The drilled cymbal actually sounded cleaner on its sound. The regular cymbal was distorted by too many frequencies.
I was just going to say, I think it sounds so much more crisp than before.
I think it sounds a lot better also. 😁👍

Great video but you gotta tighten down your saw stop, it moved a ton while cutting the jig base :)
It’s not just you that cymbal sounded 2x better after the holes.

Does the flexibility of the metal make much of a difference on the cnc machine?

Instead of holes, glue a circle of cushion floor linoleum under the seive, I mean cymbal.👍
1:44 Klaatu barada nikto :-)
let's see you play drums
You forgot to deburr/chamfer the sharp edges (top and bottom) 🤨
Seriously, great job.
More drilling... More drilling...
Beats:
More filing... More filing...
Right?

You could just use rods instead and save a lot of hassle
Well.. I thought it was cool🤘🏻
Alexandre Chappell and you should work
Noice!
On the drill press 100 holes a day for 12 days
Noice
Quite a boring video... badum tsss ;)
