- In this vintage china cabinet makeover, we (Dani and Sherry) take an old dusty china cabinet, separate it into two pieces and build a new base. Join us to see how we take this hutch from VINTAGE to AGELESS!
*Financials: cost for china cabinet = Free. Paint, stain, sandpaper, etc. = $25. Wood for base = $70. Total = $95. We plan on listing for $575 and will update you after it sells.
2/3/22 - UPDATE!!!! - We finally listed this hutch yesterday and sold it today for $600 for a final profit of $505! Wow! Very thankful!
**Note: Due to time constraints, we did touch-ups and topcoats after the video was completed.
**Also, this piece was given to us after a dear friend, Duane passed. Thank you to his children for their generosity!

So glad you are back, Dani! Your trick for cutting the perfect angle on those tapered legs is Brilliant!!!!🤙
🙌
You gals rock. It is especially wonderful that you share Bible scripture. So neat that you are a mother daughter team redoing projects together😊
Thank you so much! It has been such an incredible experience for both of us to work together and really fun to share a little bit about our faith, too!
I absolutely Love this transformation....Soo Stunning....just Love you Two! 🥰👍
Debra, you are so sweet! We love you, too! Thanks for watching and all the love!😍
This is the best hutch makeover I have seen! I love the almost table you built to put it on. Most just add legs and I feel like this is a better look. Beautiful!
Crystal, thank you so much!!!! Yes, it felt like it needed more than just legs so we went with the extra wide "skirt" to give it more strength and stability. 🤗
Beautiful work! 😮
You ladies always do such an amazing job. Your attention to detail is what makes your channel my favorite! You always do a top notch job! I love all your finished pieces! 👏
Wow... thanks so much, Anita! So glad you like it! We do goof up a lot but I think we learn a lot from those mistakes. We hope others learn from our mistakes, too. 😊
Nicely done ladies! Love that you are repurposing outdated furniture with a creative solution.
Margi in Phoenix
Oh thank you, Margi! We are so excited to give this classic, old piece new life and a new family. 😍
Beautiful piece! It’s spot on; love the colors. I personally prefer having two pieces. Who has room for one huge China cabinet these days? I love watching you two ladies! Something ALWAYS happens, making it super interesting. 😁
Haha.... thank you, Kay! You are right, something ALWAYS does happen.... I keep thinking we are going to get this down to a science BUT either we try new things that don't work or we just get a little absent-minded at times. Don't worry the next piece will go smooth as silk. (I wish...) How is Texas today?🤗
@@secondchanceohana it doesn’t matter what goes wrong, you two always figure out a way to fix it! It’s a bit cool here but no snow. At least, not yet. 🥶
This is so beautiful love how you two get along with each other
Thank you, Kathleen! We are so very blessed that we get along so well! It's very cool when family can also be friends. 😘
Excellent job. Love this piece! I really like that you took the pieces apart and repurposed the top into a lovely display piece.
Thanks! Haha... we were a little intimidated by this piece so let it sit for many months (and it belonged to a friend of mine, it was in their family for a few generations so I was a little hesitant to change it), So glad that we finally did it. 😍
Wow! Great teamwork ladies! It turned out beautiful 🤩
Mahalo, Larissa! Other than our goof ups, it was another very rewarding and sweet piece of furniture to refurbish. We are so thankful that we didn't break the glass. Yikes!!!!🤗
This is absolutely gorgeous guys! You smashed this one. ❤️😍😊
Thank you so much, Dean & Chantal! Miss your furniture flipping but we're looking forward to seeing your new channel. Cheers🤗
Looks great,,,much more modern,,,,beautiful color,with the wood
Thank you very much, Dodd! We agree!😍
That turned out fabulous ladies. So well done. Love the colour and bravo on the new base.
Oh.... thank you so much, Emer!!!! Thanks for being with us on this journey! May the road rise up to meet you!🤗
@@secondchanceohana And may the wind be always at your back.
You ladies always do such beautiful work! Vagabond Blue is one of my favorite colors too. This has such a classy vibe now and you did an awesome job with the base. Super smart to take the 2 pieces apart! I definitely need to pick up that Kreg jig.
Mahalo, Jenn! This turned out to be another one of those pieces that I would love to keep. It's like classy and rustic at the same time. Definitely, the style I love. And, yes, if you do any building, that Kreg jig is the way to go. Aloha!😘
turned out very pretty .... looking forward to the next part
Hi there Janet, thank you so much! Yes, we are looking forward to finishing the bottom. It looks like it has some gorgeous wood on those doors and drawers!
Wow! That’s classy! Love how the base came out!
Thank you, Nick! Haha... we definitely made some mistakes with this one but I agree that base is gorgeous and it all came together in the end.
WOW!!!!! this is so beautiful!!
Thank you so much, Heather! It was a really fun project!🎉💖🎉
I'm still watching the video BUT I Had a funny I Just HAD to throw in here before I forget ....Hey Dani Funny How YOU was Surfing In Hawaii While Momma Was "SURFprepping at home" 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂🥰❣️okay back to video
Haha 😂 Debra! Isn't that the truth!

Aloha 😊beautiful transformation girls, have a great Sunday 💖💖💖
Thank you, Nikola! You too! Aloha🌴🤗🌴
@@secondchanceohana I just love watching Madame Sherry working, so relaxing :D
Congratulations. And this is really nice. Great work on that base
Thank you, Mrs. Jax! Glad you like it. 🤗🌴🤗
I love this transformation.
Thanks, Leesa! It is one of our favorites.
This piece turned out great. A whole lot of sanding, but it was well worth it. I really like the colour of paint with that stain colour. The only thing that I'd say I'm not that crazy about, would be the "Pine" base. I like the dimensions/height etc, but I don't like that it's made with "Pine." There is a real difference in the type of wood the cabinet is made with ( I think maple), verses the wood the base is made with. Other than that, you's did a GREAT job on it. I don't mean to criticize, but it's just something I noticed. Enjoy the rest of your day ladies! 😊🌞
Hi JoAnn, thank you... yes we totally agree about the base and we did look for hardwood for it. Unfortunately, there was none available locally. We would have had to travel quite a distance and pay much more than we were comfortable paying to get what we wanted. Seems to be a lumber shortage right now. We also contemplated painting the base but in the end chose to stain. Aloha and Happy Sunday! 🤗
@@secondchanceohana I'm in Canada and the cost of wood has been very pricey since Covid started. Cost me a little over $100 for the oak to make a base for a dresser I did. I hope when and if thing settle down and hopefully get back to normal, the cost of wood will drop back to what it was. Have an awesome day girls. 😊
Beautiful!!
Thanks so much, Alice-Lynn!
That is beautiful!!!
Thank you, Elizabeth! It really is a treasure. I would love to keep it but don't have a good place for it. Hopefully, it will become an heirloom for its next family. 😍🤗
So beautiful!
Thanks so much, Shayna! Yes, I would have loved to have kept that piece. 😍👋
This turned out gorgeous 😍
Hi Marie, thank you!!! We never know quite how something is going to turn out when we are working on it... but we were definitely thrilled with the finished piece.🤗
Turned out great!
Hi Terri, thank you so much! This was a beautiful piece before we even touched it so we were very happy that it turned out out so well! Thanks for watching.🌴😀🌴
Looks wonderful. Gives me ideas.
Yay! Thanks Diana! That's one of the main reasons we do this ... to learn new things and to inspire others to do the same. Glad you like it!
Looks way better now!
Thank you so much, Dana Wonder/Woman! Love your name/description! Aloha😍🤗😍🤗
Love it
Thank you so much, Joanne!
Gorgeous as usual.
Thank you! 😊 We are so glad you like it, Caroline! How are you this weekend?🤗
@@secondchanceohana I’m great my new prosthetic leg is heavy but I’m trying to get back to some kind life. You two have helped so much with this channel
@@hephzibah1966 Oh that is good news. What an ordeal ... but it sounds like you are being persistent and patient with the whole process. Blessings to you, friend!
Cool
Thanks, Valerie!
Aloha Everyone! Welcome and thank you for joining us today. We love questions, tips and any constructive feedback you may have for us. One question for you all: Do you like that we split the hutch from the buffet or should we have kept them together in one large china cabinet??? Dani and Sherry🌴😍🌴
Love that you split it. I'm sure it would have been hard to sell in it's entirety.
I love that you split the piece. I have a huge china cabinet that can be split as well. Seeing how nice yours turned out, gave me hope that mine can look great too. 😊
@@shaynabrowning9681 Thanks, Shayna!😵 We discovered on ours after we split it that the bottom piece had holes underneath the hutch so we will be putting on a new top on that buffet. Yikes!
@@secondchanceohana I’ll keep my eye out for the video here or on Instagram post. I’d love to see how it turns out!
We just started it so hopefully it will be ready by next weekend. Wish us luck!
Hi ladies, is the surfprep really worth the amount of money you paid for it? I am about ready to buy one but wondering if they are really worth it. I use my orbital with a attached foam pap making it like a surfprep.
Hi Dar, I love the Surfprep in certain applications BUT I never tried a foam pad on an orbital or a detail sander. I didn't realize they existed. If that works pretty good for you, I would not spend the extra money on a surfprep. We still have to do some hand sanding but not nearly as much as we used to.
What kind of wood did you use for the base. It doesn’t look like oak. And what kind of screws? Can you give me the leg measurements and the wide board measurement please?
Hi Catherine, oak is the best wood for a base like this but it was out of stock so we went with pine. We used 2 x 2s for the legs and 1 x 8's for the apron. The base is 24" tall. The screws used are pocket hole screws. Thanks for watching!😊
I tried pine because oak is so expensive here in Canada but it split every time!
Hi I also have an antique hutch I'm re-doing. I'd like to know how tall you made the base....thanks so much!
Hi Melanie, the hutch itself was only 41 inches so we ended up making the base 24 inches and we used a 1 x 8 for the skirt/apron. It seems to be plenty strong to support it. But we know that when it is fully loaded it will be a little top heavy so will recommend to the new owners that they should secure the back of the piece 😀to the wall for safety.
Thanks for the reply! Looking forward to see what you do with the bottom portion of the hutch!
@@Melaniepond Thanks! Good luck with your hutch!
