In this makeover, I transform a vintage hutch into a modern cane door cabinet, with MCM style legs and handles made from scratch.
The hutch was split into two parts; the bottom half was refinished in charcoal black, and this video shows the process for the top half. Both were sold for a profit!
If you enjoyed this makeover, please like and subscribe to see more. And if you have any questions, I would be happy to answer your comments.
Thank you for watching :)

Hello! Some of you have pointed out that soaking the cane prior to attaching will result in a tighter finish. I completely agree with this and it’s definitely the right way to do it. Thank you for your support everyone!
WOW! You did an amazing job! Love the results. So beautiful! Do you sell your furniture & what made u take the top part off?
@@sandrarivera8374 Thank you 😁 Yes, I sell all of the pieces that I do. I purchased this hutch fairly inexpensively, and I saw potential for two separate makeovers; one with the bottom half, and one with the top. The bottom half would have been difficult to modernize into a style that I personally like, so I went with a simple sand-and-paint makeover for a quick flip. The top half on the other hand… I had much bigger plans for that.
@@ModernMakeovers have you worked on the other half? I would love to see what you did to it. I usually see women remaking furniture so I was kind of excited see u do it. Wow! U have all the tools you need!💖
@@sandrarivera8374 Yep! You can check it out on my Instagram. There's a link at the bottom of the description box :)
@@ModernMakeovers thanks
I love the quiet of this video! Most furniture flippers talk incessantly.
Or have annoying music. Silence is golden.
@@vanderm49 besides talk a lot, the annoying music drive me crazy
His editing is also on point and very good
dashner designs has a nice lowkey voiceover. but yeah this channel is very peaceful
About that, there are about 7 seconds of what sounds like two people screaming at one another at 0:20 Like for real angry! I'm listening on headphones and thought my neighbors must be fighting or something then I realized it's the video. I only mentioned it because I was reading your comment when I heard it. With that said, it is a great video and very well made. I enjoyed seeing the project come together. Beautiful results giving new life and purpose to an old piece of furniture. Nice work!
I like that you sprayed underneath too. That drives me crazy when people don't do it!
Beautiful work and thank you for not adding annoying background music 😉
I typically can't sit through a 17+ minute restoration video, but the quality of this video along with the quality and precision of your restoration is the stuff my dreams are made of.
Excellent video, beautiful cabinet!
This was a pleasure to watch.
At last someone who finishes the parts that are not always seen love that attention to detail great makeovers thanks for sharing
I agree 100% (detailing) !
that stapling montage was *chefs kiss*
That woodpecker clip just pushes the production value of this video to over 9000!
I love the way you do your video arrangement, the camera position, the insertion of brief explanation at the right moment and time, no unnecessary music with just the sound of professional workmanship and your impressive end result. Highly appreciated and fully supporting your channel.
This video just came across my feed, and I was so impressed I had to go watch all of your others. It's fun to watch someone who really knows what they're doing. And as others have said, I love the absence of music and talk. And the video recording/editing skills are brilliant!
I agree about the silence except for the music of the tools! I’ll be binge-watching all the videos!
Late comment, buy FINALLY here is a refinisher who installs cane tight and straight AND takes the trouble to cover the raw edges inside. I'm subscribing.
When you started trimming off the sides of the doors, I was 😳. By the time you got to trimming the bottom of the hutch, I was 🤗. You, sir, are a brave, confident individual.
Another great job.
If the modern world falls apart, I want to be living my two husbands (this guy and the guy from mymechanics) in our beautifully curated, functional cabin in the woods.
The furniture you create is amazing but your video making skills are above and beyond anybody else I have watched on RUclips. I loved the quick clip of the bird😁
Wow!What an Artist. Finally, someone who finishes the undersides. Beautiful. 😁😘
Pure genius and attention to detail! I appreciate that you didn’t have music playing in the video.
Your attention to detail is just incredible! No cutting corners here! Love it.
I so miss doing woodwork now. I used to make all sorts of things from scratch from bird boxes, bird tables to coffe tables, side tables and shelving units.
Your pocket holes are amongst the cleaner looking ones that I have seen on RUclips. Nice work!
This is beautiful, and while I don't have the tools and materials to do a job like this, those handles gave me an idea for a problem I was trying to solve. I could relax and watch your videos all day.
I felt like a wood whisper was hypnotizing me with his skills, how you peeled away the excess to expose the beauty of the gift you placed for our viewing. Thank you and yes I will marry you
1:24 the woodpecker and the sound of the blade being lifted... So good! LOL!! I probably forget to finish my comment, I have several half started in other videos of yours because they're all packed with these little gems! Awesome... You bring joy my friend! In so many ways.
I absolutely love your work. It is of high quality and you don't skimp on the inside and underside. That is the reason why you are the only repurpose /restore master I follow.
Beautifully restored.
I love these non talking videos. They’re seriously the best ones out there lol. Your work is GORGEOUS.
Amazing transformation. And I loved seeing you use pieces from other old furniture so they didn’t go to waste. Great 2 for 1 outcome.
OMG - love how you have the 'church key' (can opener) attached to a cord on the wall to avoid losing it - I must have 35-50 church keys all over my garage and never able to find one when I need it!!
You are the Furniture Whisperer!!!!
This is a serious dose of recycling! Love that you used as much of both parts of the originals as possible.
Forgot to say, very careful and correct workmanship.
A joy to see cane painted for a change too, another reason for it being top class for me.
I have to agree with Joanne!! You are the furniture whisperer! Absolutely fabulous!!!!
I had to laugh at the can opener on a leash. They do tend to go MIA if you don't tether them. lol I may have to incorporate that idea. lol Nice job btw.
This is some seriously good film making. You should be very pleased with the results.
FANTASTIC transformation! I appreciate the silence.
some of the edits on this are hilarious. My fav is the wedge block being smacked away
2 things...first off, good job, I'd like to steal this idea some day. Secondly, this was fun to watch.
YOU ARE AMAZING. WHAT A GREAT JOB. PROUD, PROUD OF YOUR WORK AND YOU ARE YOUNG.🦋
Gorgeous!!!!!
Another great job. This cane job would also look good in red. Clever young fella has great vision.
YOUR REPURPOSING OF THINGS IS INSPIRING...
The sound of this video is so satisfying.
Wow. Well done. I am happy to subscribe to a young creative Canadian engineer.
😊 Thank you so much!
Your videos help me in times of anxiety. Your work is amazing and the videos are relaxing. Thank you so much for posting your work here!
I restore cars, weld and paint cars. You have a true talent for what you are doing. I need to get my Cabinet Game much stronger. I love repurposing unwanted things.
I have a three door one like that I am thinking of doing over. Glad you mentioned that mahogany bleeds!!!
Mahogany is notorious for bleeding, so measures should always be taken to prevent it!
Not just restoration but recreation as well. Love the caning touch 👍🏼❤️
I love the wind-blowing-the-door-closed effect.
Hi , i'm Katie and watch your videos all the way from Greece , i'd like to tell you that your work is very fine and detailed and a joy to watch. Plus you're a young man that looks like he cares about what you produce , cudos.
Very nice! The old hutches are always cheap or free because they are big, bulky and out of style. Its great to see a modern update that looks amazing by repurposing the items.
I think it looks charming, modern ones are always trying to be like it is from Minecraft, all cubic, like it must be all rectangles, no decor (it is verboten for some reason, Like God forbid we add a cornice for a finished look)
Thank you so much for including all the detailed steps and helpful hints. Your work is very creative and meticulous resulting in a beautifully finished piece.
Those screws are so long that thing will last forever! Beautiful craftsmanship and very professional video!
Question: Why do you prefer shellac over Bin Primer?
When I plan on painting with a dark color, I like to use shellac since it’s clear instead of white. If I were to use Bin primer before painting, I would need more coats of paint just to hide the white foundation.
That stapling made me so happy
There is something about your videos that ease my anxiety. New subscriber here!!!
I have to admit I died inside a little as you totally deconstructed the original & removed its details, but the end result...WOW! Your craftsmanship was amazing. I got a ton of info in your video style. Loved it!!! Can't wait for more! New sub!
same. i loved the groove and glass front of the doors
The original was cherry finished and didn't look like a truly vintage piece. This is a great, careful update of a piece of furniture that wasn't designed with anything other than 90's trends in mind imo
Amazing! So fun to see you reusing parts and make your own handles and legs. The result looks great.
I have bad anxiety but watching your videos make me feel soooooo relaxed, also your level of craftsmanship is wowwwwww
Pleeeeeease make more videos! The quality of your work is far better than most refurbishing videos I’ve seen. And I love the organizational tools you’ve crafted as well- the paint opening tool on a retractable lanyard- brilliant!
Thank you 😁 Credit for the retracting paint opener goes to the worker that I met at Home Depot who had it conveniently on his waist.
@@ModernMakeovers and your rotating screw container- genius!
Your attention to detail is amazing! I could watch you work all day! Beautiful piece!😊
Your editing is brilliant. I find your videos hilarious- in a really good, intentional way.
Stunning transformation
Love the quiet. Also, I'm falling in love with power tools!
I was taught that caning should be wet when installed. It pulls nice and tight when it dries and won’t droop in the future. Nice looking cabinet at the end though. Nice choice of stain. I love Saman Stain.
I'm obsessed with this, I've been meaning to make a cane webbing headboard and this really inspired me to get it done
I love the layering of the stains on the handles. Just neat the little things you do that make such a huge difference! 💜💜💜
Love it. Unrecognisable from its previous life. Well done.
I really enjoyed video. Peaceful
It is so stunning to see a person restore an old piece and make it completely different and at the same time so beautiful, I must say that your a master at your craft. Well done .
But what is one likes the old style?
Tool/DIY-using ASMR ftw!
BEAUTIFUL job!!
Thank you!
I love how organized you are!
I love it, its beautiful
You are the master of furniture makeovers!
It looks great! Thank you for the tip on drying the wet cane. 👏👏
I was steeling myself for all the talk talk talk, and I usually end up fast forwarding the video because I just can't take it anymore. Yours was perfection! 🥲❤
Beautiful result--great attention to detail and a new life for a lovely old piece, saved from the landfill.
Thank you so much for not putting music on your videos. It’s so distracting. I love the sound of the work being done. Karen Florida
I love your creativity.
Great work fellow Canadian ! Robertson screws and bilingual paint cans made me guess !😉
Absolutely beautiful you got yourself another subscriber. I have huge respect for people who refurbish old/junk furniture!
Love your work so much. Happy to find you. Greetings from Germany!
How fitting that you have a woodpecker nearby!
Thanks for the video.
Oops sorry, I meant to add how stunning this piece is!! Amazing!
I’m obsessed with the detail of these videos, the way you handle everything so delicately and the tasteful makeovers.
I need a WOW button!
Nice to watch someone with a great eye to detail.. Thanks for not spoiling the video with unnecessary talking🗣️ cool 👍
Nice looking piece, and some great ASMR.
Lots of work
It turned out beautiful
You are an amazing artist of furniture!!! A furniture whisperer!!! Just incredible!
Thank you 😁😁
❤ my favorite part of this video is watching how you make the slanted legs, the support frame with indentions for screws ! I’ve seen a couple other of your videos & just love that part!
Very nice finish
That turned out really well. I loved the antique before, but really liked the after.
I'm impressed by so many things about this video. You know your interior design style, obviously understated woodworking and your craft, and really know how to make a relaxing and well edited video. Beautiful work all around!!
I totally enjoyed watching the process. You seem to have every tool in the shed. Thank you 🙏🏻
While I have watched several of your videos and enjoyed them very much, I was sorry to see you take a beautiful piece of vintage furniture and turn it into something that looks like it came from Ikea.
Perfection, thank you for posting.
You have the best furniture flipping channel. When I have a stressful day, I make some dinner and watch a couple of your videos. I feel better after watching them.
😁🙏🏻🙏🏻
Love what you did there. I’ve said it before but I really like the No narration and the natural sounds in the background. I seriously find it relaxing! Keep it up!
Glad you enjoyed it! 😁🙏🏻
Your finish product: stunning! You’re a perfectionist! Admiral work.
Thank you for not adding a voiceover! I’m so relaxed after watching..
Also just really want to congratulate you on your excellence to your craft. It’s obviously inspiring so many.
Thank you so much! :)
Wow great transformation, i like it when is more than paintings
Love this piece. So many people know how to deal with the bottom but not the top when they redo pieces... It may have been cool to put the cane on, and the overlay that was on the glass over the cane for some other inspiration! Maybe even painted gold?!
I learned so much from watching this!
