    In this makeover, I take a refinished dresser back in time to its original wooden glory.
    This dresser was floating around on Facebook Marketplace for weeks before I stumbled across it. The seller had written that it would be perfect for a refinishing project, and that's exactly what I picked it up for. This piece was constructed with 100% solid elm -- even the sides of the drawers -- which is a rare and valuable find, so I had to go with a full wood stain restoration to bring out the beautiful grains. It had been previously chalk painted with some stenciling on the door; the chalk paint was peeling and chipping everywhere, due to a lack of proper prep work on the wood prior to painting. This made it quite easy to just scrape off most of the paint, with some help of a paint stripper.
    If you enjoyed this makeover, please like and subscribe to see more. And if you have any questions, I would be happy to answer your comments.
    Thank you for watching :)

    There's two types of people: the "paint everything" crowd and the "painting over wood is sacrilege" crowd. I'm just happy any time a piece is kept from a landfill for a while longer. If painting it keeps it in use another five years, and then someone buys it and restores it for another five years of use, that's ten years it wasn't in a landfill! This is a beautiful restoration and anyone who loves the natural wood look would be happy to have it in their home ❤

    • @knmplans
      @knmplans 2 года назад +85

      Exactly! Who cares so long as it keeps the piece in use. Plus, watching so many of these videos I’ve learned sometimes wood gets damaged to the point it’ll never be aesthetically pleasing even if it’s still very functional. I myself don’t have the skills to remake and replace those parts. I could manage painting them though. So there’s good reasons to enjoy both styles. I personally like a mix. Just brought my newly painted nightstand into my bedroom tonight! Mine was really beat up, damaged during a few moves. My husband’s was fine. I painted mine and left his. Everyone’s happy and it all still looks great together.

      Some pieces it’s sad to see painted but all wood pieces aren’t created equal. Just because something is wood doesn’t mean it’s a quality piece. There are furniture pieces that aren’t well built and it’s not the end of the world if that pine 70’s piece is painted.

      From what I can tell, even the repainters agree. It's just that a lot of salvaged furniture isn't real wood, or is just peeled veneer/ doesn't look good raw. When they get real wood, they don't seem to paint it, thankfully.

      It's elm, doll. But agreed. If restorable then it's best, but sometimes it is too technical to restore a damaged piece for most folks. In that case, paint is better than the landfill.

    That is SO nice! That wood is gorgeous and the stain you chose brought it out so well! The only suggestion I would make is to see the handles for the drawers painted black for a contrast and to match the door handle. And by the way, the way you made those handles was BOSS!. Other than that, outstanding work! Thank you for letting us see the resurrection.☺️

      @@vbee3571 I do too, but it's all down to personal preference. Sometimes I prefer contrasting hardware, and sometimes I don't. I do love the way the drawer pulls look on this piece tho. Great choice 😊

    Painting beautiful solid wood is sacrilege. You did a good job bringing it back from the dead. I might have dyed the handles black but that's my taste. Fine work.

    the fact that you used the belt sander with BARE hands but wore gloves for scraping the paint…
    but the anxiety watching that scene was worth the final result!! the woodworking is impressive once again🤩

    Wow. That´s a beautiful one. Such a nice piece of furniture, you saw the potential and gave it what needed. 5 stars, really. I don´t think it looked THAT good when it was new. Perfect. The handles, they pushed this furniture to another level, as well as the colour choice. Ingenious.
