as a geologist I'm going to tell you right now do not listen when they say it has nothing to do with the recent volcanic activity.... these geysers have everything to do with volcanic activity. Those geysers are essentially a visual seismograph as far as evaluating volcanic activity in Yellowstone
I've heard the theory that the caldera is too diffuse and fragmented to blow "the big one." Is this more scientific sunshine being blown at us or is there some truth to that theory?

The only way the two are related is that there is residual heat driving the geysers the geothermal aspect does not refer to the moving of magma. So take a chill pill and do some reading or something. There is a gigantic collapsed volcanic caldera near Los Alamos New Mexico (birthplace of the bomb incidentally) that is 50 million years old. And there are still hot pools and Hot Springs after all of that time because there's a shitload of heat left over from when the volcano was active. So yes you can have geysers and hot pools without the movement of magma which is the defining characteristic of vulcanism.

I understand they're trying to not scare the public about possible eruptions.
BUT, straight up saying this has nothing to do with potential volcanic activity is absolutely stupid and will bite them in the butt later if something serious happens.
There's a difference between avoiding hysteria and literally ignoring reality.
It's one of those things you can safely say because either you'll be right, or if you're wrong, the survivors will have more important things on their minds than calling you out for being wrong.

I don't think you understand how these things work...
They have constant geological surveilance on the entire park, monitoring changes in land elevation, earthquakes and even how acidic the water in the area is. So unless they see changes in those values, it's safe to say that the volcano is no more active than it normally is, and geysers in particular are prone to sometimes "erupt" in unpredictable ways, due to changes in the water reservoir that feeds the geyser.
What WOULD cause concern are things like sudden elevations in the land, water quickly becoming highly acidic compared to normal, or a marked increase in earth tremors.
Skynet, above, is correct. Case and point, none of us who live near the park are afraid of it... at this time.

St. Helens and I remember everyone saying that it wasn’t going to erupt, simply because it had been many thousands of years since the last eruption. For this reason you were laughed at by your friends and co-workers if you said it was going to blow. After witnessing St. Helens, if I see a geyser explosion at Yellowstone atop a 30 mile long Super Volcano, I’m slightly more inclined to take it seriously.

Scientists have been saying Yellowstone is ready to pop anytime. This is just the start. That whole area and San Andreas are long overdue for a jolt.

Scientists say it’s possible, but not likely. Yellowstone doesn’t have the amount of magma needed for an eruption. The last eruption was 640,000 and Yellowstone may never have another. Earthquakes and steam and hot water eruptions are more likely. Which I guess has just occurred. It’s not an indication Yellowstone is about to blow, so don’t freak out.

@@platinummax8393 Just to be clear, here's how geysers appear: aquifers low in the crust heat up from being in close proximity to a magma chamber. That water turns to steam and follows whatever cracks and crevices, until it reaches and explodes out of the surface.
It absolutely _is_ related to volcanic activity. With this particular geyser, it's a grave warning to anyone living near the park, that it's time to go.

It's very poorly worded, this is volcanic activity, but not magmatic activity. Basically it's purely hydrothermal, the hydrothermal system - the geysers, mud pools, hot springs - is heated by Yellowstone's magma chamber but it's not connected to it, what happens in the system can be completely unrelated to what the volcano is actually doing right now - which for the record, it's pretty much just sitting there heating the ground. So you can have hydrothermal explosions, usually when an outlet is blocked by shifting in the very weak hydro-thermally altered rock and pressure builds up, without a magmatic intrusion or magma rising to the surface, which to be fair can also cause this kind of thing, but there would be multitude of other signs.

If you have never visited Yellowstone National park, I highly recommend it. I went there when I was 14 years old back in 1998 and getting to see geysers in person is one of the coolest things I've ever seen in my life. 🙂
The only problem in going to yellowstone especially around the main thermal activity sites is the sulfur smell it is not pleasant.
@@dragonage2112 yeah I remember that, you begin to smell that as you're entering the park. I don't know about nowadays but I remember in 98 when you're driving through the park you could see lots of tiny geysers all over the place and lots of them slightly active and definitely lots of sulfur smell. And I got to see Old Faithful erupt. Yellowstone and redwoods national forest was my favorite tourist attractions out of many I have been to.

I live an hour from Yellowstone, and visit many times per year. I have visited the park since the 1970s. Something like this is very unique. While the Park changes daily, this type of change is rare. Fun!

I think the intention of saying the explosion was not volcano related was them trying to clarify that it wasn’t some immediate warning about the volcano itself blowing. Most people know that geysers are linked to volcanoes, they likely meant there was no change in activity at the time of the explosion. There could easily have been a structural failure that allowed the pressure to break through

While I do not agree with the whole climate change debate(I have lived in Florida since 69, except for Active Duty time, and Florida was way more hotter with way more torrential downpours every single day in the spring and summer than now)BUT, if Yellowstone blew, then you would see real climate change,world wide‼️Of course, WHEN it blows, I’m sure that the climate activists will be overjoyed‼️They would get their fondest wish to reduce the carbon emissions by humans,OH HAPPY DAYS‼️🤡👻🤡👻🤡👻🤡👻🤡👻🤡👻
I contacted Wilsey at the Collage of Southern Idaho Geology Lab and he agrees with me this is a hydrothermal eruption these happen when ash clogs a geyser vent or molten Sulphur falls into a pool. What that happens the pressure builds up just like shaking a pop can and pulling the tap and the end results are The geyser vent erupts and shoots rhyolite bombs out the hole. glad nobody was hurt because I seen a rhyolite bomb before I use it as a doorstop some are the size of cars.

Geysers are nonpermanent geological features. Geysers are generally associated with volcanic areas. As the water boils, the resulting pressure forces a superheated column of steam and water to the surface through the geyser's internal plumbing. That's it!
Geyser fields around the world are remnants of extinct volcanoes too. What was meant is simple - the explosion has nothing to do with the volcanic activity increase.

No it isn't. There's no magma coming to the surface. It's related to geothermal activity, just like a volcano is, but they're not the same thing.

Having a boardwalk a few feet from a geyser is probably not the best idea. Same thing with putting a sky bridge over an active volcano. People going to do their thing and tour though.

Geothermal activity and volcanic activity are not the same thing. Geothermal activity may arise from Hot Rock but has nothing to do with Magma. This was a steam explosion deep underground in the piping of the geyser. And when that happens it blows the entire column of water up into the air that was above it which is exactly what you can see. No that's not magma no that's not a pyroclastic flow it's just water getting blown out of the geyser with more Force than usual because of something going on in the vents that Supply the geyser. Sometimes vents get plugged for various reasons and pressure builds and steam at tens of thousands of PSI will not be denied it's exit for long. Never took any geology in high school?

It's my understanding that these geysers are all created/fueled by volcanic activity. Are they trying to say this wasn't natural or are they using "volcanic activity" to mean something different here?

There is a distinct difference between volcanic activity and geothermal activity. Volcanic activity refers to magma movement, whereas the geothermal activity involved in geysers results from the interaction of the Heat left over from the last eruption in the form of the magma chamber with groundwater. Think of a tube going from the top of the ground straight down to a hot rock. Now picture an oblique tube intersecting that tube. Through that oblique tube flows water which falls down and fills the column directly above the heat source. At some point the water closest to the heat Source will flash into steam and I don't know how much you know about steam but you cannot stop Steam. So the steam explodes if you will shove the water above it in the column straight up to where the geyser exit is which you see as Old Faithful or whatever geyser you choose. So then groundwater flows into the tube again fed by the oblique tube . This is the recharge phase . And as described above eventually some of the water right next to the heat source flashes the steam propelling the water upward as a geyser and this repeats over and over which is why some guys are fairly regular in there ejections . The Fill time and the heat time can remain stable for decades. Capiche?

The geyser field all over the park is a good thing and we should be thankful for it to get going. Why? Because that is a great way for the magma chamber to dispose of the enormous heat safely.
When the geysers stop working, the heat starts to build up, eventually melting the now mostly cooled magma, mixing it with the underlying layers.

Hope this is not the warning shot that Yellowstone's super inverted volcano is starting to an eruption. Of course they would play it down. This is the tourist season and that park gets alot of tourists.

This looked like the last time I had to call a plumber. Oh and Geisers are powered by scalding hot water, and sometimes they can get blocked by deposits since the water is high in mineral content or from seismic activity. That builds pressure and then it has to let go. That's the mystery and beauty of Yellowstone.

Apparently anything involving the tiniest bit of science brings out the Dunning Kruger in people who know no science but think they no more than volcanologists. There are several people above who said that the geologist who said that should be fired because he doesn't know what he's talking about when he said that it's not vulcanism!! Really, and the Dunning Krugers do. I knew this at 14 probably because I went to high school in the early sixties when they actually taught science even if you weren't going to be a scientist. Although I was, eventually becoming a chemist.

Yellowstones geysers have a long history of changing behaviour and in all cases its nothing to do with changes in magma chamber activity at depth. eg surface waves from large earthquakes in Alaska are known to have caused changes in geyser activity. Anything that disturbs the shallow plumbing system that feeds the geysers will result in changes to geyser behaviour

Best guess? There was an obstruction in the guyser shaft somewhere close to the surface, and pressure built until the obstruction was cleared.
My guess as well it does happen and has before.

So, not an obstruction, but a change in water pressure, essentially.
