I think the real MVP here is the interpretor. Being able to translate so quick on the fly
That's no ordinary translator. That's Toshi Hayama from JDM insiders, and The Fast & Furious series.
Quickly
Respect for the translator, but by rule you should focus more on the person who is telling the "story" then the one who translate, and that is not really done by this cameraman. Off course, some times, you need to break the rules ;)
iMiguelAOG must be brothers
iMiguelAOG I agree ☝️ he’s excellent!!
Best instant translator I have ever seen. He's amazing!!
I agree! He didn't have to stop and think, he was like a machine!
Impressive👏🏼
That's Toshi Hayama. Suffice to say, he was a fixture on the Import Tuning and D1GP scene back in the day... I can't think of a better translator to help Toyota tout the tuning potential of this car.
This guy is amazing. I’m bilingual and I know he actually needs to understand the knowledge to be able to translate that fast. I think he’s a Toyota engineer maybe moved to the US from Japan when he was little.
interpreter*
This is not the first presentation, hence, the interpreter is by now familiar with lines. Not sure why people are so impressed.
"If you just have a fast engine, it's a boring car. It's not a balanced car, you have to have a chassis that matches that engine." This quote alone reinsures me that Toyota is back.
BMWotoya
its so good bro
Toyota: "Once it´s in the hand of the customer, it´s thier car, they can do whatever they want with it"
Ferrari: " *May i have a word with you guys?* "
Time for Deadmau5 lawsuit
They built the car with tuners and aftermarket in mind. That is very beautiful
It means they did not finish the job.
@@doctorlarry2273 that's what I said too until I realized, the mk4 supra is so popular because of how tunable it was, stock it was decently fast, but an amazing daily, but with a few mods, it can be a drag beast, few different it's a drift king, some different mods it's a track monster, I feel like that's something they tried to accomplish, stock it's a great daily, but you can tune it to what you want
@@doctorlarry2273 this car is growing me ngl
That’s all I need to know to know that the supra is still alive and well in the aftermarket community
If it didn’t have all these quirks I think there would be even more people hating on the supra that those same people who do it now😂😂😂
That engineer knows how to sell a car, to an enthusiast. Most car salesman can't do that. Wasn't a fan of this car, but now i'm chaning my mind.
Most car salesmen get taught by any enthusiastic buyer. It's like some sales guys just don't want to know anything about it besides "you can connect your phone to it".
Jeremy Stig Toyota has done their marketing research.
This is built for millennials hands down:
Looks
Made for convenience
Easter eggs
The feeling of old school, like turbo lag!
Bmw (for the kids that cherish bmws)
Luxury
Once when the guy said “it was too stiff”, turned me off. This car was supposed to be a no holds barred sports car. Too stiff is part of the lifestyle!
Instead it’s a luxury sports coupe.
@@volvo09 To be fair... most car sales people are not car enthusiasts or gear heads. It's just another retail job to most of them. They just focus on the options/features that will appeal to the everyday customer. We're all here watching this video because we're enthusiasts and care about what the chief engineer/s have to say.
@@jojog8304 no to much stiffness ruines running unless you need it. With this Supra with that power and weight distribution with bars is too much. But more power that is a different story.
@@jojog8304 but if you let the luxury to look cool go for it.
My opinion on the new Supra has completely changed. Love how they keep the tuners and customers in mind
😂 😂 funny how those vents actually don't do much, take for example, the hood vents, take them off and there is just sheet metal behind. Even if you drill through, there really isn't much because they are next to the struts. Its nothing special if you'll have to make major mods which can be done on any other car. Also the door vents which literally lead no where. Come on people, yal still buy this poor marketing gimmick attempt
@@upto_date_with_tee2259 Hating the car for just one part? Pathetic......
Hyposphenous no, that's not the only reason. Btw me pointing that our is because a lot of people think that what the engineer was saying is true and its the easiest job to make those vents functional. The car would be good as a z4 coupe
Love how the price range is within most people’s pockets
Yo!!! The Translation, Interpretation and communication of their information, BLACKBELT Level. RESPECT, 👍🏾👊🏾✌🏾🇳🇬🇺🇸
ayo30s you figure you need to know 10,000 words to be fluent in a language. So let’s say 3,000 to be street fluent. It’s one thing to speak another language. But also the language of the gearhead, and informal jargon as well. Ball joint, axle, strut, wheelbase, alternator, FMIC, CHRA, BOV, surge, gvw, bhp, whp, awhp, oversteer/understeer, 0-60’, ET, start adding up all these words and it is its own language in itself. Now transcribe that across two countries, languages, and cultures, with different automotive standards and associations. That’s cool. I would be wealthy if I could do that
Is because both of them are engineers.
thought that "hmm" indicator worked flawlessly.
If you've been working with a particular person long enough it gets easy. Ditto for sufficient experience.
@@latenttweet Unfortunately, the pay is terrible unless you're lucky enough to land a gig like this. When I worked at Honda, they contracted out to temp services even for high profile interpreter services. I interviewed for a position that didn't even require a college degree, but hilariously expected applicants to have a high proficiency in both corporate business environments while also possessing automotive technical knowledge. I was honest with the temp service coordinator, who obviously had no clue of the skill level required for such a position, that she needed someone either with a masters degree or better, or several years of experience in the automotive field. And yeah, $15 an hour with zero benefits? I told her straight up that she was never going to find someone with the necessary skills who would work for so little.
This is a rare video..How much thinking goes into the engineering..straight from the mouth of a Head Engineer...sometimes journalists are dismissive within a few roadtests itself...would love to have the same content from Andreas Preuninger the GT3,GT2,RS, chief at Porsche...though Germans donot go to the details in their tech talk as the Japanese...the Japanese are one meticulous people
MrJuggernautishere hey Japanese are detail oriented that is exactly why Honda’s and shit never blow up because that attention to detail and meticulous behavior was made to keep the company from having a headache of people blowing shit up which still happens today but hey it is on a lower scale. That is why there is a need for attention to detail on the supra so that the company knew that everything was right with the car so that if something bad were to happen that was on the person not the company 🙌🙌🙌
attentention to detail is pretty much one of the few common traits between japanese and germany people. the other major one would be punctuality. on most other stuff japanese people are the polar opposite to the germans. the main problem you will faith, when talking to a german person is that german just assume that americans do not care and behave this way. most german companies ship stuff to the usa, that they would never sell in germany.
Yeah my 2014 yamaha R6 blows my mind. So much race tech trickled down over the years between my legs. Makes me feel like i got a 14" cock.
That’s why japanese cars are better.
So many people, especially here in Europe, say that germans are the best car manufacturers. Not true.
@@navaks5335 each automaker has there merits.....but when it comes down to motorsports......the germans are the most dominaitve and succesfull.....porsche and bmw take a portion of the fact.....esspecially porsche.........

IT looks nice in every color im going for the red color..

The car is growing on me quite a bit, I like it... It's either the yellow that changed it for me, or it just looks much better outside than in a show.

@@robbynelson3 vocal pauses are actually part of the Japanese unlike English, so it actually goes to show how fluent in Japanese the interpreter is. He's either a native speaker of both English and Japanese or he's lived in/studied Japanese for a long time. Very few Japanese native speakers can speak English that well, so he's likely American.
@@robbynelson3 Keep in mind the fact that he's translating two very different languages on the fly. but then again, dont you love to make your car your own? It's bonding imo. Lets also not forget that some people only want balls so fat.
You have to know the Japanese aftermarket and tuner culture. In the US and elsewhere, you need to conform to some kind of BS standard. That standard does not exist in JDM-land. Their philosophy is that "it's your car, do whatever you want with it."
Isn't this what everyone wanted? The Supra was never a superb car in it stock form, the potential in modifying it is where it really stood out
Hilarious
I think toyota gave every supra fanboy actually what they wanted. Perfect chassis that can be tuned like crazy :)

Yeah, I’m sick of these comments who says that it’s just a bmw which is not true ( ruclips.net/video/_jbyzmtgU_0/видео.html ). Plus, it’s a really good car, the only thing that I don’t really like about it is the transmission.
That Japanese lead design engineer obviously knows a great deal about car design and has a lot of talent and experience (obviously or he won't be at that position at Toyota), but what I admire most is his humility... very inspiring.
Emmanuel Villegas the motor is BMW . BMW SUPRA.
Don't admire his humility too much. That's what he wants you to think. I'm Asian myself, it's all about money and nothing else. As Asians we are raised to present ourselves a certain way. But at the same time, we know how use that "appearance" to our advantage.
Thyny San you raised to do that for money but he did it for respect. Toyota does not need to humiliate its employees for money. Not all Asians have self respect, Japanese do. Japanese are the top tear of Asians.

By far my favorite Supra video. One for the ages. Hearing the engineering decision -making process and how it ties into this final product is really incredible.
After hearing the passion this engineer has as he talked about his car I find it hard to argue that it is "just a rebadged BMW Z4"
Mr. FLUP exactly.
Mr. FLUP people are stupid and are quick to say something based on little information
Very true. People are just so stupid they didn't even bother to find out why they decided to do what they had to do.
Faster, bloated FRS
Technically it is they just detailed the engineering the z4 car was designed by both BMW and Toyota it's just BMW made... BMW engine Toyota body
Beautiful car. I couldn’t buy a z4 knowing the Toyota looks so much better.
Tear the Toyota badge off and slap a BMW on the front, problem solved.
Handles much better on the track too. Already plenty of RUclips videos on this.
I love how Toyota paid respect to the old Supra hood latch......while using a BMW chassis and engine. That’s how you pay homage to an iconic JDM vehicle. The hood latch is clearly what makes that car great....
Mr. Tetsuya is such a passionate engineer, you can tell by the way he talks about the car. Awesome.
It is not simple design; it is your dedication and heart put into it.
He is a paid cheerleader. He did no engineering.
Thank you for uploading basically the whole interview so we can form our own opinions!

Same here. I'm ok that it resembles a Z4 and has BMW DNA in the engine but my biggest gripe is lack of a manual. That was a big mistake on their part.

I can afford this with ease , it is a Z4. The only difference is the outside design. Don’t let anyone fool you. It’s gonna be a great car and glad BMW did manufacture it.
But here are true facts of BMW and this guys fiction claims. I know this guy is a legend, but after these claims, I have lost respect for him. We had a whole discussion about it in a private BMW group. Someone is gonna call him out.
The double hood latch with a double pull this guy speaks of is a BMW design. It’s been like this on every BMW since 7 years. It’s a BMW Exclusive double pull.
He says the sound pumped in is faint and didn’t want it to distract from the real sound. That’s exactly what BMW designers said 2 years ago with M2.
He said the door sill goes against Toyota design cause they want easy access, but had to make it thick for strength. I call bullshit too. He had no say. It’s BMW structural design. Identical to a Z4.
He said he left spaces for coolers too. If you look at Z4, it has space too. Another bullshit claim.
I’ve been in the car industry for 30 years and I can not be fooled. He may be an awesome guy, but he just helped with design of exterior and slight interior only cosmetics.
This video will come back and haunt him. These are the worst claims I ever heard in the industry.

He asked questions with genuine interest and desire to learn more about potential modification on the Supra. Love TFL you guys are always great and getting the news out quick and do so with professionalism, unlike that chump who was just pressing the engineer about more horsepower and kept on bringing up the Z4. Keep up the great work guys!
Ben Hinckley yeah I thought the journalist who brought up that the z4 has more power, and that as an engineer you always want more, was being annoying. A very numbers focused attitude
Anyone who complains about this car sharing a platform with BMW is completely missing the point.(imo) This car is on point, looking exactly what I would expect a Supra 20+ years advanced. I freakin love the looks. I'm not thrilled about the platform sharing, but I'll never be able to afford one. Thank you Toyota for bringing back the Supra. It is awesome!
Never say never like that bro. If you want something like this you can get it easy. First step is the belief/imagination.
Not only that sir BMW built the mechanics . So it's basically a BMW.
@@dannybishop68 I'm aware of that
BS. Since I own a MKIV, I know what a real Supra is - and this ain't it. It is a BMW Z4 with a body kit and it will be very unreliable. Not to mention that it is just an upgraded 86 that will not compete with any real sports cars.
@@doctorlarry2273 you are an idiot they even explained in the video how the new Supra and 86 will differ from each other and also how the Z4 and Supra with be nothing alike as well being the only things they share are the chassis which both companies jointly designed and the engine itself. 86 and Supra Chassis's are different sizes, Supra handles better, etc . Supra will be more of a proper sports car and have more power and more ease for modifications. And just because they sourced a BMW engine for this car doesn't necessarily rule it out. Yes BMW has been known for not so we'll accessory reliability but the engines themselves are just as bulletproof as the 7m, 1j , and 2jz plenty of ppl have made solid 7-800 hp reliably with n54's on the stock block just like on 2j's. They make solid inline 6 engines just cut corners on the other stuff like accessories and electronics. Toyota knows this . That's why they made BMW send them whole engines and even broke it down for quality testing all the way down to engine bolts to verify reliability. There's even parts that Toyota had BMW refuse to use for reliability issues or concerns. If you did your research or paid attention into the videos you'd know this. But of course there's all these ppl like you naysaying without proper information and knowledge. As long as Toyota kept up to what they said this car will be a solid car compared to the Z4 . It has alot of potential. Forgive yourself of your ignorantance and stop being a fanboy and educate yourself. Just because you own an mkiv doesn't mean you know it all . I own Supras too and multiple generation prob more than you have owned . But just not gona rule the car out bc it has a BMW engine. Bc with that logic could say the same about Yamaha and the other Supra engines smh

Double tap Productions I'll take a Corvette any day. For the same price, it looks just as good, handles just as well, and it has more power!!
That said, this Supra is a gorgeous car and will only get better as people tune them.
@@TecnamTwin Agreed. I like the looks, the sound, and all of the engineering genius that went into this car, I'm sure it'll be an awesome driver's car, but it's too expensive. You can buy a Corvette with the same or less money and get more power. You could make the quality argument, but the C7s seem to be built better than most GM products and they're desperate to get rid of them right now as they prepare for the launch of the C8. If they dropped the starting price to low-mid $30k they'd be biting into the market for Mustangs, Camaros, etc. and it would be much more attainable for the thousands of people who have been eagerly awaiting the rebirth of the Supra for 20 years.

Good to see other ppl appreciate this beauty cause man this supra as some haters
The Supra actually has between 365-375 Bhp, according to every single Dyno test done on it as of yet. Than with a basic software tune and a better exhaust, people are claiming getting a minimum of 450+ Bhp.
That is incredible, yes, Toyota could have done this out of the gate, but what the engineer said made perfect sense, the power to weight ratio was tuned in perfectly for the platform.
Than add in the fact that Toyota made this into a tuners wet dream, with almost plug'n play aftermarket parts the Supra is going to do very well.
This video made me change my opinion about this car really like it now
As soon as this car in fast and furious movie, I am pretty sure it will immediately gain legendary status LOL 😂

All part of making your vehicle unique my dude
Lets add that to the "things non car guys say" list.
Daniel McFee it would obviously be better if it was functional, but the world isn’t an idealized place; those non functional vents are cost saving in r&d and production.

@@jclar3565 That's why porsche cost more ?
I actually like the idea of leaving space for improvment to your specific needs. It lower the initial cost (not by much indeed), but it also bloom the aftermarket and give them a lot of rooms to play around. you can use those vent for brakes, engine, rear diff etc. there are so much you can do if you wanted to.

American megalomany*
Everyone act like only Americans like fast cars.
TheUnconventionalDeal after long debating and thinking about i conclude that more than speed most americans buy powerful cars to feed their ego and self esteem. Ive been several times in the usa and most people drive their "beasts" like grannys. So, if you cant drive them not even at their 50% potential (laws, traffic, hability etc) why bother spending so much on a car with a nuclear reactor as an engine?, just for social aceptation?, i know, the highway is americans catwalk and you have to look great there, at least in numbers. This car, just out from the shelf has far more capabilities than most of its owners would ever need and use. Im convinced that if toyota has decided to detune it to a lesser power than the z4 is for reliability and lasting reasons.

@@doctorlarry2273 never owned a bmw?? A 5 year old can tune it better than you hahahaha
Most people won't admit it but they will be at a traffic light next to another guy in a performance car or roll racing or they will take it to a drag strip. Road racing is fun but not alot of tracks in most common areas that's cheap like a test and tune at a drag strip. That's why people want more power. Look at the old Supra. Tons of drag racing videos of 5, 6, 7, 8 and 900hp cars roll racing or drag racing but not many on road courses. I like this car just the way it is.

Would I be paying BMW or Toyota prices for regular maintenance.
My guess would be that it would depend on the parts/what's being serviced.
ahoyjayd hmmmm that is a very good question. One that’s genuine. Not like some of the comments and whining.
I believe it will be much closer to BMW prices but if you think about it it's not that bad. If engine was solely developed by toyota it would most likely mean even higher prices since it would go only into the supra because toyota would have no other use for it (it's a cheap brand whatever it's legacy is). Also if you somehow kill the engine in a future there will be a few BMW models you could source the engine from. I also really do not think there is a way to make a sports car that is as cheap to maintain as usuals from toyota line up so asking if it will be Toyota or BMW pricing is kind of pointless.
@@erlik07 Toyota actually already has pretty expensive parts. Look up a early 2000 Toyota PCM compared to a Chevy PCM.
Also, you're paying for a premium car...are you really asking that question?
Despite all the negative feedback, I think this thing is going to sell like crazy.
People just love to hate on things without even trying to be rational. It's just the sheep logic, new thing, new hate.
I'm not really sure who's going to be buying these like crazy. It's $50,000 so that rules out the vast majority of younger car buyers. It's a torque-converter automatic so that rules out most of the driving event enthusiasts. It doesn't have enough horsepower to attract the muscle car crowd. The die-hard Supra fans would rather buy a Mk IV. Luxury car buyers would probably pick the Z4 or a Cayman. There's no aftermarket for the tuner crowd. Who's it going to be?

The real reason for the two hood latches - it was designed that way by BMW. All the cars using the B58 have them. The Z4 has them, the M140 and M240i have them. With literally the exact same placement, design, and even the exact same lever. Since it's basically a BMW car, it has them too.
Typically I hate yellow cars, but this one looks fantastic.

The 6 speed for the M2?
They are going to make manuals later down the line
