      But then they started the project with the intention of building a Supra. Hence why they won't settle for anything other than an inline-6 as one of the engine options. It would be silly for toyota to build a new generation supra and then suddenly rename it like idk a FT-1 just because it shares some components with BMW

      Yeah I agree. My friends and I said the same thing. Celica GTS or something else. I'm sure it drives well and all that but this release was underwhelming considering that Nissan has the GTR as its sports car flagship. I think people were hoping for a real competitor for Godzilla...oh well.

      To be fair, if speed is you’re primary concern then you want the fastest transmission possible, which is an automatic. Manuals are more fun to play around with on the road, but in a race the automatics (especially good dual clutches) will smoke manuals due to way faster shifts.

      @@caglioso while this is true...a very large majority of auto enthusiasts dont' track their cars in a competition regularly... so its more about the enthusiast factor driving around the streets and back country roads (where manual is WAY more fun). If you can shave .2's of a second off in the 1/4 or the 0-60, who cares. Then the weather, altitude, driver skills, tire compounds, etc all come in to play and having a car that's very marginally quicker at shifting is basically irrelevant. I can honestly say when I hear about these new sports cars coming out without the option for manual, I feel dooped by the manufacturers who are stiff-arming the enthusiasts and catering to those who care about statistics on paper.

Supra, RX-7, 300ZX and 3000VR4 are more in line.... again talking about JDM. 300ZX would have been more popular had it been easier to tune (its hard to tune due to engine structure) 3000VR4 was too heavy and high-tech at the time.... therefore you have RX-7 and Supra... Supra with its bullet-proof engine became super popular.... but stock for stock, it was behind NSX and Skyline GT-R... slightly but still a tier below. I'm a Toyota guy, more so the MR2-GT and Celica GT-Four, basically the "Robin" type Sports cars from Supra.... but respected the Supra. But I'm also a Nissan guy, Skyline GT-R R32 was my first sports car and I dearly miss it.... the 300ZX was also in my garage at one point and it was a heck of a sports car.
      The guy in the video made a great point, Supra became ultra-popular in America because of the movie. If the 300ZX or 3000VR4 was in the movie it would be very popular also today, but obviously as mentioned due to their flaws the tuning crowd will always put the Supra first.

      What bothers me is the unrealistic ideas some people wish the new supra was more like
      For example, some people talk about how the new supra should've been twin turbo with pushing almost 700hp but little do they know that would mean the car would be more expensive
      I understand people are upset that the new supra has a BMW engine and they think it's very underpowered but in all honest the Mk. 4 supra wasn't that powerful from the factory, yeah it was quick and fast but it was only about 330hp with a turbocharged 2jz from the factory
      In my opinion I think the Supras are kind of overhyped, I would honestly wish Toyota would bring back a powerful sedan like the Cressida back in the day, maybe make a Cressida package for the Avalon with a turbocharged or supercharged engine with a AWD option

    • @0128okuzono
      @0128okuzono 5 лет назад

      @Chicha 17 You also do have to realise the cost of performance is much higher today. The McLaren F1 in '94 sold for roughly $800,000. A '19 Chiron starts at $3 million. Sure, the Chiron has way more bells and whistles, but Cars these days just cost way more to build. Toyota is pricing the new Supra at $50,000, compared to the 40~50k that the old TURBO supra was sold for. If you account for inflation, it is actually more affordable. For reference the 911 started at $60,000 in the 90s now it starts at $100,000. You could have bought a brand new M3 for $35K, cheaper than a supra. The supra was an expensive Car back in the day and hence the sale numbers struggled. Nobody is going to buy a toyota thats over $80,000.
      Also, yeah better performance =/= more powerful engine. Not true its about the power to weight ratio. Lighter the car, less powerful the engine it needs to be. You cant expect F1 engines to perform well inside a truck.

    • @0128okuzono
      @0128okuzono 5 лет назад

      @Chicha 17 You are missing my point. How is the P1 comparable to the F1? The F1 was the fastest car when it was produced. It was also one of the most expensive sports car of the time. So today it would be the likes of the Bugatti or Koenigsegg, which you wont be able to buy with 1.4M. And I didn't account for inflation because I was comparing the price of the 911 and the m3 of the 90s with the price of the supra sold back then. Also to add there are many cars these days that are +1.5m which you would not have seen in the past, accounting for inflation.
      You may not care if it was a more expensive car, but trust me people do care about the prices of Toyota. People who don't know too much about cars, so most people who buy luxury cars who work instead of looking up car stats would most likely choose European badged cars rather than a Toyota if it was priced the same. Maybe lexus might be different. Would most people buy a $100,000 Toyota or a Porsche?
      How is weight not a factor of performance? All of the supercars theses days use Carbon, it isn't cheap. Imagine how slow a Koeningsegg would be if it was just steel and aluminium. It wouldn't be as fast as it would be. You have no idea how much weight does to the performance of the cars.
      You do realise that power isn't all there is to performance right? There is a reason why American cars cant make it as fast around the track as other cars. If you want straight-lining speed, get a corvette, that is not what Im looking for in a Japanese car.
      You are having these comparisons because people are overhyping the supra because all they see is a 1000hp++ fully rebuilt supra that cost like $70,000 to do. Which the average person buying a supra would not have the money or time to do. Please show me a video of a STOCK supra beating a lambo. Also the turbo on the Supra kicks in around 4k rpm, which goes against the norms of car performance which prefers less dramatic power increase. People were hating on the 86 when it came out, trust me people will get used to the new supra and would start to appreciate for what it is. Also, people hating on the new supra hasn't obviously driven one, and are complaining that it doesn't look like the FT-1 concept at all or it doesn't come with a 3JZ engine.

    • @0128okuzono
      @0128okuzono 5 лет назад

      @Chicha 17 You say different price structures, but aren't all supercars targeted at the same luxury market? Just because the mclaren name lost value in 20 years doesn't mean that the Car market as a whole is coming out with few million dollar cars isn't what they are.
      If you start to talk about just power, heck might aswell start mounting jet engines.
      Please, when the Supra hit the US market nobody cared, thats why they stopped selling them. The Fast and Furious made the Supra name.
      Also be realistic, with the Lexus brand name, Toyota will never make a sports car that will cost more than a lexus coupe, it just goes against their corporate structure.

That is how all of the "collaborations" work. Only one boss in the room.

    It has less power than the BMW simply because it's detuned, And it's detuned because toyota will get engines with higher tolerance, which run just fine, but BMW would reject.

    • @ChroniclesofKToyoda
      @ChroniclesofKToyoda 5 лет назад +1

      Toyota isn't getting inferior blocks, not sure where you heard that. The lighter boost makes power delivery more liner, closer to that of NAs and it's repeatable predictable power.
      More heavily boosted cars suffer more variable power lap after lap or corner after corner. Supra is supposed to be a driver's car hence why the MkIII&IV went to twin turbo in the past or were only boosted to around 8psi on the single turbo models MkIII & older models.
      It's about predictable liner power only slightly above what that motor could do NA, essentially it's using the turbo to get rid of the acoustic torque dip of atmospheric NAs and a splash of HP more, because extra power comes with extra lag, that's just physics something that matters on roads that are twisty.

    • @doctorlarry2273
      @doctorlarry2273 5 лет назад +3

      @@ChroniclesofKToyoda Toyota detuned the engine (thus the lower hp) because they knew it would not be reliable. Mess with the tuning and your warranty is void - bad news for a BMW. Lower boost just means lower power, period. The MKIV is a beast because it can run much higher boost and can be upgraded to much higher hp than stock with reasonable mods. The B58 can be modded - but nothing like the 2JZ-GTE. Mine has tasteful, moderate mods and makes 471 rwhp on low boost.

    • @ChroniclesofKToyoda
      @ChroniclesofKToyoda 5 лет назад +1

      @@doctorlarry2273 I'm not claiming its better then the 2JZ, I'm just giving you the reason why it's lightly boosted. Like you say Toyota's 2J was strong, it could've readily shipped with an extra 100hp from factory without issue but with boost comes lag regardless of how modern a turbo, but lag aside, big turbo engines just don't give repeatable amounts of power with even amounts of accelerator input. These are the same sort of reasons that the LFA was an NA.
      As for your claim that Toyota is getting inferior blocks, that doesn't seem to be backed by anything the engineering teams have said & is seemingly a nonsensical statement.

    • @ChroniclesofKToyoda
      @ChroniclesofKToyoda 5 лет назад

      Also I'll point out if your statement is ment to convey that the new Supra makes less power by virtue of an inferior block then by that logic the 2JZ Supras must be the weakest of the bunch.. See how asinine it is to make such statements rather than listen to the BMW & Toyota engineering teams.

    More people should bear in mind almost every car built, past & present, share many key components with many other cars due to the prohibitive expense of making everything bespoke. It is how these things are subsequently incorporated & tuned into the car which matters.

    When you consider that a naturally aspirated Aavalon V6 produces 301 hp... and this BMW engine which is TWIN TURBOCHARGED produces 340hp... Its quite clear that Toyota could have EASILY made their own engine producing at least 360hp

    • @michaelvl494
      @michaelvl494 5 лет назад +1

      It's really just the result of corporate bean counters. For cars like the 86 and Supra, they're low volume cars that won't generate much profit for Toyota. Toyota lives and dies with how well the Corolla and Camry does. From an engineering and design perspective, I'm sure the chief engineer would have liked bespoke projects from the ground up.

    • @joeljeffrey9139
      @joeljeffrey9139 5 лет назад

      @RMH 666 It's not twin turbocharged. It's a single turbo with twin scrolls to spool up faster, hence the large torque available in the lower RPMs. Toyota wanted a inline-6 for balance. Why would they use a heavy V6, then modify it to take boost reliability since it's a NA engine on a different platform?
