Albon, I want to thank you for this video. Honestly. The amount of keyboard warriors who talk trash about the A90 without ever having seeing one in real life, driving one, and experiencing one is too much. This video compiles FACTS and TRUTHS in such an unbiased way. I feel a lot of the anger towards the A90 by most people who are against it are due to the fact that it was codeveloped, when they don't understand that the legendary Supra name had to be executed in such a way that would comply with Toyota's standards. I truly am so stoked that a new Supra exists and that it is actually attainable at less than $100K CAD; the GTR and NSX are out of most people's price ranges brand new, and this to me was a very wise business move on Toyota's goal to make this more attainable for everyone.
Thank you for the kind words! The A90 has definitely been a polarizing topic for sure, but I think that the facts will prevail in the end. I, like many others, have my fair share of complaints about the project, but having driven it and now having owned one, I can safely say that it is a genuinely great sports car, especially for the money.
@@r_drix BMW engine, BMW brakes, BMW gearbox, BMW infotainment, BMW chime, BMW/Mercedes/Audi PCD and Center bore? Hell even the ET is the same, you can slap M4 competition wheels, AMG 19s or RS6 ones and go. "Shared" platform my ass.
Having owned a couple BMW's, I softly chuckled as they said Toyota surpassed them in the quality control department. That does NOT surprise me, not in the least. BMWs are very fun cars to drive. But reliability isn't their thing.
Not true at all, it all depends on which BMW you decide to go with, if you chose n54 for example, well then you might be right., Also it comes down to how much maintenance you do on your car, that an knowledge of "what to do".
You've either owned 2nd hand junk yard BMW's or you're just trolling or had some serious bad luck. I'm driving BMW for the last 12 years, replacing every 2 years and never had any issues with the car, dealer or backup service. I agree with Gabe, people comment very easily on what they think, not what they actually have experienced.
LMP Riptide, There is much to love about BMW but 12 years worth of 2 year relationships does not a marriage make. Having turned wrenches on cars for 35 years my experience has mimicked in general the average of the various reported statistics on used car repair rates that are available to review. Replacing broken parts and especially rebuilding drive-line components strips away a lot of the euphoria of the brand oriented opinions so popular on the internet. Compared to cars in the early 80's, almost all cars have dramatically reduced repairs under 50k miles due to improved technologies and materials. So until you get into a "12 year" relationship with one car please understand that the strong emotional tie you feel towards BMW is due to experiencing the newness of German engineering. Enjoy it! But understand what it is.
Everyone I know who has had a BMW did so much maintenance lol. Toyota and BMW is perfect collaboration, because toyota cars will last 300,000 miles while BMW brings you a comfortable and fast ride.
Great video. I say this to everyone who I talk to. Who wants a Toyota with BMW reliability. And this video answers some of it. But the platform aside, this is a BMW parts bin car. Not manufacturered in anyway by Toyota. That is a hard sell, namely you slap a Supra badge on it. The other part, a lower HP driver's car with no optional manual trans at launch is a huge contradiction to their sales pitch for who they are marketing it towards.
Definitely agree. It's certainly not what the purists wanted or really what the majority of the car world expected, but at this point, we have what we were given and I will continue to reserve judgement until I get a chance to drive one. The 86 was an interesting foray into this collaborative streak by Toyota and I personally feel it achieved what it set out to. I'm most certainly not a BMW fan though (I know you had a wonderful time with your M3 lol) so I'm still reasonably apprehensive. Thanks for watching dude!
Individually the parts are BMW but the sum of those parts coming together becomes a Toyota product. I doubt the MK5 drives anything like the Z4, we will see. Did you know that the MK4 turbo’s getrag transmission was made by a German company?
@@gerardjoaquino8856 Definitely not trashing it, but being realistic about it. There is a reason why people loved the Supra, AE86, MR2, Celicas. It wasn't because they were the best, but they were some of the most reliable, fun and affordable cars they made. (if cared for). BMW is not know for reliability they are mostly throw away and costly to own long term when you put real miles on them. So maybe this will be different, but its very hard to get excited. I say this a lot if you have a great car and its always broken or having issues, is it still a great car? That was my BMW experience.
@@joshcorvette yep. if it wasn't for all those JDM Instagram accounts run by 13 year old's who simp over the same 5 cars. " ItS A BmW" same joke over and over
This makes want a B58 powered car. I love BMW I6 engines. They sound good and are very tuner friendly. Having one with Toyota reliability would be awesome.
I was thinking the same thing. I'm tempted to but a Z4 M40i. I really like the car. If it pans out they are even Toyota-ish in the reliability department, they're going to be very desirable down the road.
The problem is using complicated technology which makes them prone to defects and hard to fix.. For instance just take the cooling system in this car which is way different from conventional and complex
Maybe, you're still paying $60,000 for essentially what is an FRS with a body kit and a bump to 350hp. I feel like for that price market there are sooooooo many better options. Unless you are a hardcore Toyota fanboy I don't see this car selling well.
@@1859ddd problem is that most of the die hard toyota fanbois are the ones slating it the most for being a colabaration with bmw and not a fully toyota developed car
@@Asylumescapee11 Edit - I was wrong. Yahama did not make the 2jz. I can admit when I am wrong. I apologize for misinforming anyone. My opion on Mk5 still stands though. I still dont see it selling well. Well then they aren't hardcore fanbois because the Mk4 Toyota Supra was made in conjunction with Yamaha. Toyota did not make the motor Yamaha did. I understand what Toyota was trying to do here and it would have been a solid pick to go with BMW to help them with the straight six motor aspect of the supra since BMW has some of the greatest straight six motors of all time no question. But what ends up happening is feeling like Toyota took the easy way out and used a bunch of parts bin cookie cutter BMW crap instead of making it feel like a Toyota. Its just a shame all the way around because to be honest I'm sure its a great car. But I don't know how great a car can be if its only got 350hp in a price bracket that its competitors have 450+ hp. I mean ever the BMW Z4 that has the identical motor as the new Supra comes from the factory with more HP than the Supra haha. Just doesn't make sense to me. I understand a great car isn't just made from a hp number but for what its up against its got a lot to make up for only pushing 350hp if that makes sense.
It's actually the other way around. People like it because it's a Supra, so to speak! Hence why it was badged! That sh*t looks ugly aF imo! Looks totally like a the Z series! I like BMW, but people are looking to buy a Supra, NOT a BMW!
BMW and Toyota does not need to work together. They are doing fine by them selves. But they decide to work together across the different time zone and cultural barrier to envision something new. I'm sure both companies learned a lot from each other and that's good for all of us. Maybe BMW QA team learned thing or two about quality control. Maybe Toyota learned thing or two from BMW’s design philosophy and what us must for them. For me, this shows that both companies are willing to explore new possibilities and step away from corporate group think ( once you are in a group.. It becomes the echo chamber. Sooner or later everyone is repeating everyone else. ” That's how we always do things.”) and willing to spend $$$ on R&D. This is big win for both companies even if the cars do not sell in high volume. Selling more car was not the goal. It's more of process improvement and testing / design methodology they learned from each other.
I think it's cool that they learned from each other too. The fact that the product wasn't moving well until a Japanese man who lived in Germany when he was a boy could help bring them together, is a really cool part of the story. It's probably overly simplified, but I like it. @@MSH3423
Good video, but it is still made of 90% BMW parts even if Toyota did help improve the B58 engine reliability. It will probably be a good sports car and may have better reliability then most BMW's, but Toyota should never have called it the Supra. The Supra brand is their flagship brand and to not develop it themselves to showcase Toyota engineering is just stupid.
Why do people think this way? It can still represent Toyota engineering even if it is just a Toyota revision of BMW technology. Plus, the people who are going to buy this car aren't driving around in 1998 Camrys and 2001 Lexus RXs. The people who actually might buy this car new are they type that drive used Corvettes, and Boxters today. They want BMW handling, with some small suggestion of reliability. It doesn't matter who Toyota pairs with to make a car, be it Yamaha, Subaru, BMW, GM, or Mazda. Toyota seems to always come out on top.
Like you were gonna buy it anyways. 99% of people bitching in this comment section were never gonna buy this car anyways.... So what's the big deal? You see it as stupid, Toyota sees if as economical. They saved a lot on RnD costs. Its just good business sense. Spend less on a low volume car.
Toyota knows the success of the supra name so people will buy it because they named it supra. Could have called it an 86. I wouldn't be surprised if they made an 86 and it looked like the new supra. But let's see where this car go. Too soon to judge
BMW and Toyota should be advertising that outwardly so that all understand that it may have the BMW badge and performance but it also has the Toyota pursuit of reliability and longevity
Exactly the comment section seems like people missed that in the video. So technically Toyota helped development of the B58 up to there standards, that's amazing if you ask me.
I can really appreciate the research and facts brought out here. It really clears many things up concerning the Toyota/BMW collaboration. Well stated and very interesting to say the least and otherwise without their partnership, we would've never gotten either of these cars. Manual of course is always good but then again how many sports cars today at all price ranges are really using a manual anymore? As much as some of us like to row our own gears we have to accept that they are just about gone now for dual clutch transmissions instead. And this seems to be the standard for most sports cars today. The auto industry has moved in this direction so we have to adapt to the change as well. Complaining and whining about manuals now is not going to change anything. If a company happens to offer one great but don't expect this to be the case anymore. But I digress, an odd pairing between these two companies but all in all I think we may end up pleasantly surprised. Just because it's new and different than previous ones doesn't mean it still can't be good in it's own way.
This is a damage control video but the damage has already been done. I like BMW and I like Toyota but you don't mix and match a car like the Supra. It's like putting a German made handle on a Samurai sword. This makes it look like the manufacturer is trying to cut corners. I can see driving this car showing off to my friends and all I hear is this ain't a SUPRA! This car's value will be just like the Mazda RX-8
It’s like taking the blade of the Japanese sword and replacing it with an old dusty German blade on it. It’s missing 2 seats and NO 2JZ ENGINE. There is no manual transmission and it’s a roadster. It will never be a Supra and it spits on its name by trying to pretend to be one.
Also people don't realize it's a updated engine it's the B58C not the regular B58 in the 340i's and 240i's and it's also rumored that the turbo is bigger on the Supra then the Z4. And knowing Toyota and also BMW 335hp might not be the BHP it might be higher.
So.. Toyota tested every bolt to make sure it was reliable.. and then they detuned the engine to be 50hp slower than the Z4 to be more reliable.. what??
No, I mean, it's basically, like the Toyota team went to BMW for a "Build a Car Workshop" field trip. BMW was like: "these are our M-cars, this how they handle..." Toyota: "We want that!" BMW: "Okay, these guys manufacture the BMW chassis'..." Toyota: "We want that!" BMW: "Okay, this is ZF a German company we contract for transmissions, we have a long history with them, and they are developing an 8-speed automatic..." Toyota: "We want that!" BMW: "Okay, now at the heart of a sports car is the engine, we use various engines, your old Supra had a turbo straight-6 right? Well, while you and most every other manufacturer gave up on the straight-6, we furthered the development and now we have..." Toyota: "We want it!"
@@michaelcarr4748 mate SHUT the fuck up. Is there anything really that bad about BMW's, that is the thing, they are great cars to drive, and because the supra is the same underneath does not mean the Japanese can't put a little Japanese Into it, does it
You call this parroted PR bullshit "facts"... Hah! Led lemming. But will you be led to the dealership as per their hopes? And @Jack Carline, Yes, there is something bad about BMW's. They are frigging money pits, literally the opposite of Toyota's philosophy, hence the controversy.. Yes, they drive nicely, but not that much better than most other sporty cars. Most of their mystique is thanks to the brand awareness AKA, badge whores... In short, BMW's are overrated (and yes, I have actually driven them, several of them). When double blind taste tested, most could not tell the difference between 99cent coffee, and overpriced Starbucks coffee. In fact, some preferred the 99cent stuff!. And yet, people still overpay for Starbucks because of brand awareness, and I get it, it's what they want other people to think of them, they want to be seen being able to afford overpriced coffee... But that right there is another problem. People will be overpaying for BMW maintenance without even enjoying the badge whoring aspect, double fail.
@@jackcarline5183 I think you missed my point, chill your expletives... And read what I said. I said that BMW walked Toyota through the design process. Nowhere did I say anything bad about either car manufacturers quality. If you want to ask my personal opinion, you can do so, since you didn't take the time to ask I won't volunteer it.
If the automatics don't sell enough. Simple. If the autos sell enough then why bother selling to the minority. Let's face it.Manualbros prefer older cars.
@japanwatchconnection chill. I'd take manual over automatic 80% of the time. That's got nothing to do with the brakes, power steering etc. It's a question of personal preference and not comfort or safety.
@japanwatchconnection The people wanting manual trans are the people that really enjoy driving. Those like yourself who enjoy ABS, TCS, STM... etc are not petrol heads like some of us, those that truely enjoy driving want to truely feel like their driving. No assist's, no nonsense doing stuff for you. Just you, you're 2 arms, you're 2 legs and a massive smile. A car is not a box I sit in for safety, A car is an extension of myself while im driving it.
They know how much of a sales boost they typically get from releasing a manual version. If the automatic sells well enough that a typical sales boost would outweigh the cost of development/production, then they'll green light the manual.
I’ll put my two cents in - I bought a Supra 2 years ago. I love it. The shape is distinctive and still turns heads. The sound of its stock exhaust is entertaining and never fatiguing. It’s suspension provides comfort at distance and over the pot-holes in the battered U.K. road system. Very few exist in my area - the ownership experience thus far has felt like I am privileged to drive such car. I cannot quite understand the revulsion people have for its excellent auto gearbox, it’s paddles allow full control if you want it. There is plenty of room for tuning and upgrading - why this car hasn’t sold in larger quantities seems to me to be pure prejudice against its BMW - Toyota hybrid origins. This video is the best I’ve viewed in describing the cars design; superb work. Thank you
How much does a few fanboys opinion matter? Nothing because the rest of the world doesnt share your opinion. No matter where I go it never ceases to amaze how much positive attention it gets by all ages and gender.
The old supras were JDM tuning icons. This new thing is just a cookie cut sport car product made to make money for the company and not really a product for the people
You 're fucking dumb. I'm sure there will be big aftermarket community for the new supra but it needs time dumbass. The a80 wasnt "JDM tuning icon" for a long time after its release.
I was a hater of the Supra MKV. I thought it was the greatest failure ever. With the low horsepower numbers to the B58 being a mediocre engine, at best. Then, the numbers started coming in. The first were the 0-60 times and 1/4 mile times. No way this engine is producing 382 HP. Then, you witness the dyno numbers and you realize Toyota was lying about the numbers in the best way possible (the dyno numbers presented 382 at the wheel which translates to around 440-450 at the crank). Then Papadikas racing did a breakdown on the B58 and your realize it's a beast of an engine with so much potential. Now that they've released the manual, I have one on order.
Look I have no issue with this car's existence or the reasons as to how they made this way. BUT. Don't call it Supra. Let the nameplate die an honorable death instead of using nostalgia as a money grab. This should have been called the Toyota 89. Big brother to the 86. That way, NO ONE would have gotten pissed off. It's just another jointly built machine. Plus give us a damn manual, FFS. All this emphasis on driving enjoyment and perfect balance, blah blah blah and you nerf it with 2 pedals? Come on, guys... The 86 has it, this one should, too.
@@cheefukeefu I'm fully aware of the AE86 call back. I've been building Toyotas for over 2 decades. The new Supra was supposed to be the spiritual big brother to the 86, so a larger number would make more sense to the general public which has no idea was JZA80 means anyway. Besides, this new Supra has nothing to do with the old one so any reference to JZA80 would be pointless. It fits in with the typical numbering standards automakers are using. Use any number, letter, greek alphabet character, I don't give a SHIT. Just don't use Supra!
@@cheefukeefu I don't buy that because it has an inline 6 makes it a Supra. Many cars have inline 6's. BMW has been doing it forever and they still do. Are other BMW's then related to the Supra, because of the inline 6? That's like saying the Camry V6 and the Taurus V6 are the same car. Both FWD V6 sedans, yet entirely different. The fact remains this car is mechanically a BMW with a Toyota body on it. It's a joint venture, much like the 86. The new Supra has more in the common with the 86 than it does with the MK4 -- by a wide margin. This is why I have a problem with the name, not the project. Had they called it anything else, there would be no backlash. Make no mistake, this car is NOTHING Supra. To say the BMW inline 6 makes it a Supra is ludicrous. It's not even a manual, even less relation to Supra. They just did it for the commercials and sales. Despicable.
@@cheefukeefu It seems we agree on all counts but the name. ;) To me, it's just not a Supra. Toyota did not build it so... not a Supra. If Porsche and Subaru got together and built a new 911 with on top of an Impreza platform flipped around so the engine was in the back, would you be ok with that being called a 911? I mean, it's got a boxer engine in it, so YASSS it's still a Porsche. No way man. This is the same thing here. Collabs are fine. But call them what they are. Manuals all the way!
The GT-R also needs to die a death and stop making the legendary Skyline look bad. They try to sell a $50,000ish vehicle for over double that and no wonder nobody is buying it.
Oh and before anyone says anything, I owned a brand new 2014 GT-R that cost $104,400 and I can say it's nowhere worth that. Every year the price goes up and they don't even add anything to justify the cost. People buying it keeps dropping for a reason.
I have to say, it was a definitely unexpected design, and I was a bit standoffish from the company at first. But the more I looked at it , read about it, and thought about it, I really have come to start to like it. I think the problem was that we ( supra owners ) have come to love the exact design of the mk4. I think there are so many people unwilling to accept change, or anything they're not used to. Realistically speaking, this car is pretty nice, and reasonably priced ( It's a f*ckin supra, c'mon ). I don't really mind that it doesn't have the so wished for 3jz. It doesn't need it in all honesty. We already have the mk4. Why do we need another? My respect has increased for toyota having the absolute passion to constantly innovate and create new, unique cars. By the way, great video. I love your content/vibe. Thank you for being a logical voice in this issue.
The design wasn't unexpected at all actually, it was pretty clear early on that the new Supra was going to be styled somewhat upon the FT-1 concept. I just think the chassis and styling of the FT-1 would have suited the supra name more than what a gt86 successor should have been
I was at a training presentation hosted by a plastic engineering supplier to all the major automotive brands worldwide. When we were discussing life testing of certain plastic parts, he mentioned most automotive brands used a figure of xx,xxx hours as a guide. There was only one company that often decided to spec 2,3, sometimes 5 times the hour life guide that other companies used. For confidentiality, he wasn't allowed to actually say who, except they were Japanese & the name started with "T" :D
Coming from a honda guy, I'm satisfied what honda achieved with the type r. The supra is such a legendary car that I'm amazed they let another company pretty much make it. This shows toyota is leaving the enthusiast market for sure. At least the nsx is all honda.
Toyota has totally disgraced itself and insulted Lexus by having BMW build their Flagship sports car... a sports car with a current modified V6 would have been fine, you don't see the GTR guys crying about not having an inline 6 !!

@@DougE.phresh Did you even watch the video?? Toyota handled the reliability and durability testing extensively and helped BMW redesign many components until it met their standards. I own a BMW and reliability isn't nearly as bad as people make it out to be. German engines have tighter tolerances so you need to be on top of your preventative maintenance, but if you treat it right then issues are rare. At least watch the video before you try and spread ignorance.

Been thinking about this for awhile. What the 'Supra' was to other people will not have any real meaning to me since I didn't grow up in that time period. From what I can tell, it was a GT car more than it was a sports car. One could argue that some of that spirit went into the LC more than the new Supra itself, despite not explicitly being inspired by it. Which leads me to another thing, everyone seems to have an idea of what they think the Supra should be, and it feels like that's clouded so much of the discussion (BMW parts aside) around it. But fact of the matter is, to the CEO, and to Tada, Supra meant sports car, and it's one hell of a sports car at that. I feel that when people refer to the spirit of the car, it's more to do with their own predispositions, their own nostalgia of the past models, rather than having to do anything with the car itself. I know this because sitting in one for the first time, it felt special right off the bat, despite the switchgear, there was an aura of anticipation I experienced. I can imagine the same could be said for any other sports car that other people have lusted after before back in the early 2000s, or in the 90s, or 80s, or any other time period for that matter, that's just the cycle of things, and I've come to terms with it. What I haven't come to terms with, however, is whether I like this or the LC 500 more lol. They both set out to make driving fun, in different ways while having great, focused interiors, concept-car styling, and excellent engines and chassis dynamics to boot. While the LC is much more expensive, as a stretch goal car, I could see myself going out of my way to make it work, like I could with the Supra. Ahh, decisions, decisions.

A sport race car, mostly in time attacks, it needs 50 to 55 in the front. The rest is up to the suspension tuning. But I wouldn't say that a 50-50 is neither good or bad, it's neutral. But it's a good start for a nice set of coilovers. I've driven a miata, an s2k and a brz. All of them 50-50 weight distribution, all of them with bc coilovers. The coilover and weight distribution combo is miraculous. The most predictable handling and drifting I've ever made. All of them with the right suspension tuning could either be drifters or time attackers. So I would say a 50-50 is a good thing for start
I just came here to say, What an absolutely fantastic video, excellent production, editing and content, kudos to you! Hopefully you have more videos like this coming in the future!
Love the new Supra and Z4! Sad they don't offer them as manuals, but the automatic is excellent. If you have not driven a ZF 8 speed, you are missing out!
I think they know that the manual transmission is a niche market, probably developing a new one will not make them any profit. I think that is why BMW stopped doing manuals on the new M5's. Its all online hype.
Andrew Xie this is absolutely ridiculous. To start with, small sports cars are a niche market product. It’s not a SUV. It’s not a midsize sedan. It’s not a hot hatch. Secondly, people of all ages enjoy driving manual transmissions. It makes driving more fun and since this car is not a race car, built with the sole purpose of racing other cars in a race division, this is the most important thing.
James Medina the reality of the situation is that the internet loves manuals, but the people who actually buy cars choose automatics. Do you really think if their market research showed most people would buy a manual they wouldn’t offer one? Just think about it for a second. Their job is to make money.
The "supra" the the potential to be a great car. But their fatal error was calling it a damn Supra. That's like Ford hiring Mercedes to build the next mustang. I'm sure Mercedes could build Ford a F*cking great car, but not a single cammo hat wearing, miller light drinking american would buy it if they called it a mustang. In this case Toyota made a mechanically perfect car, then hired bmw to build the next gen version based off an existing car that can't hold a candle to the old version...
When i read your comment it makes perfect sense i love Honda and if they brought the Prelude or S2000 back with other brand parts i would be hesitant cuz i would be saying “Its a Honda or its not” i completely understand why Toyota ppl be upset now cuz even tho i thought putting a BMW engine would be better which it could be its not what the OG was

So this is all Japan's biggest automaker can do. They've completely given up on producing a pure-bred sports car now. Honda has their NSX and Civic Type R. Nissan has their GTR and 370Z. Toyota has... a BMW and Subaru. And even if the Supra and 86 were "co-developed", Toyota never bothered to build an engine for either one, opting to use BMW (i6) and Subaru (boxer) engines. Honda and Nissan took their time and carefully crafted their own cars from the ground up and stake their reputations on their cars. They care about their pedigree. Toyota just cares about the money.
It's good to hear that Toyota had input on the development of the B58. That was one of the places in the car that I had the most reservations about. While I'm still a little annoyed that they effectively dumped a BMW parts bin in the interior, that's something that doesn't matter too much and can be changed in future years. The engine is gonna stick around for a good amount of time, and I'd hate to hear about an unreliable Toyota.

I drove the supra back to back with an m2 and a mk7 golf r (my car at the time) I was so surprised that I liked the supra the most, even having previously thought I'd never want to go back to a Torque converter car. There’s lots of misinformation in this video, you should check other videos for actual facts if you’re really interested. Shmee150 actually bought one and uploaded a video showing the car in depth, that has much better info. This video claims that the interior was designed completely separately from BMW, but it’s extremely clear it wasn’t. They both share many interior parts including the m-drive infotainment system, shifter, dials, etc. That’s an extremely simple detail to get wrong, and that makes me doubt everything else in the video as well. Great production on this video. I usually have no intrest in vehicles but the video was so well made that I kept watching. Truly a work of art. Keep it up.
is incredible how both the Z4 and the Supra were released together, with different driving feel and dynamics, but people still talks about Supra as the biggest "crime" of this collaboration
The iDrive is part of the platform so it makes sense the Supra also has it. It has all to do with controlling the drive dynamics and close to nothing to do with Interior Design.
@ Jan Knight Maybe it will, it all depends on how Toyota has implemented it. As Toyota doesn't have that kind of system, it looks like it's an improvement you'd want to have in a Supra. So in the end it all comes down to tolerating an iDrive system to control the setup of your Supra or lacking the control to change the setup of your Supra. It wouldn't make much sense for Toyota to rip out the iDrive and reinvent the wheel just to have a proprietary system.
Talk is cheap. A lot of people claiming they're only interested in manual. Except they don't have the money to back it up. 1/4 of Corvettes that sell are manual, and Vette enthusiasts are pretty loud about manuals. No point in manufacturers losing money on niche spec'd low production cars, that you won't buy from them. "Exploring options"(per the article) is the pandering way of saying, "where are the customers?".
My VERY shrewd family in Spain realized that the Supra is .... a BMW 8... down to door handles and the MK5 is made of 100% BOSCH parts. And how does Spain know this??? Well, BOSCH Spain is the BIGGEST BOSCH manufacturer in the world and the SUPRA has been a source of a lot of gossip in Madrid headquarters (my source) and Barcelona. So TOYOTA should bite it , stop the charade and admit the SUPRA is NOT LIT .. It is rather dark.
Stop it the Supra is a Z4. The Supra has the suspension, engine and drivetrain all come from BMW period. It's a rebadged car and if people want to lie to themselves just to feel better so be it.

To me, Toyota going to BMW to help build the new Supra. BMW has had a ton of success with their I6 engines, and the I6 engines not only being able to produce great power but also being very reliable. I'm a fan of BMW personally, owning one and working on quite a few, I've come to not only respect, but fell in love with what BMW is.
The only thing done independently between the cars are their exterior styling. The Supra's interior shares 80% of its parts from BMW (see the photos), it has BMW sourced engines, has a BMW sourced suspension, the list goes on. The only difference between these cars are the exteriors and possibly the driving dynamics. Under the body, the Supra is most certainly a re-badged BMW. Driving wise we can't say much about it, but there's no doubt the cars will feel similar.
This new Toyota Supra makes me very mixed feelings! On the one hand, it seems to be a legendary name, but on the other hand - it is a spit in the soul of all fans! Get a BMW Z4 and attach a Toyota label to it!
I watched the video, and the arguments of that side were inconclusive. Some Japanese with a German education, some kind of joint development does not justify the fact that they stuck on that BMW Z4 a label of Toyota and called it Supra!
@@DreamCarsPro from the video, they didn't take an old Z4, refreshed it as a successor then slap a Toyota badge on it. We'll be able to find out how different the released Supra and Z4 would drive like in due time, but at least we know their designs aren't carbon copies.
I don't know why this is a big deal because Subaru did the same thing with Toyota. I find it pretty disgusting that people keep criticising the car when it was a joint development and it has been done before. This is the kind of thing ruining the car community. Enough said

I'm sure both companies learned a lot from each other and that's good for all of us.
Maybe BMW QA team learned thing or two about quality control.
Maybe Toyota learned thing or two from BMW’s design philosophy and what us must for them.
For me, this shows that both companies are willing to explore new possibilities and step away from corporate group think ( once you are in a group.. It becomes the echo chamber. Sooner or later everyone is repeating everyone else. ” That's how we always do things.”) and willing to spend $$$ on R&D.

Blade analogy is spot on🤣🤣👏

How could the sales figures decide if a manual would be a future option if no manuals are being offered?
If the automatics don't sell enough. Simple. If the autos sell enough then why bother selling to the minority.
Let's face it.Manualbros prefer older cars.
No they don't. We want to buy modern cars without garbage automatic transmissions.
@japanwatchconnection chill. I'd take manual over automatic 80% of the time. That's got nothing to do with the brakes, power steering etc. It's a question of personal preference and not comfort or safety.
@japanwatchconnection
The people wanting manual trans are the people that really enjoy driving. Those like yourself who enjoy ABS, TCS, STM... etc are not petrol heads like some of us, those that truely enjoy driving want to truely feel like their driving.
TOYOTA SUPRA IS A MARKETING STUNT! End of the samurai.

Wow!!! By far the best video I've seen covering the new Supra. This video deserves way more views. Great content, and very informative. Subscribed!!!!
let me take a wildly educated guess, if you can fathom the concept, "Howy" this is your video, doesn't take a genius.
This car will be remembered favorably. It just needs time. I love this thing, and it will be remembered kindly by enthusiasts.
BMW engine, BMW transmission, BMW rearend, BMW chassis, BMW suspension, BMW electronics, BMW interior. "According to the facts" this is somehow a Toyota car....
Wait, did you even watch the same video we did? Lmao
@@albonfilms Absolutely, its the one on this page that shows nothing was built by Toyota. But apparently they quality tested some BMW parts so thats good enough to call it a Toyota.

@@albonfilms watched the video to end there no way in hell this 2019 Supra resemblance old Supra any car enthusiast by looking at it will be able to difference it more of BMW Z4 than Supra.
Just took delivery of my brand new supra and I absolutely love this video. I drove the supra back to back with an m2 and a mk7 golf r (my car at the time) I was so surprised that I liked the supra the most, even having previously thought I'd never want to go back to a Torque converter car. After taking a vacation to LA and renting a supra, I immediately sold my R and put a deposit on a supra. Absolutely love the car
If you look inside the door jamb the VIN sticker says, “Mfd by bayerische motoren werke.” Manufactured by BMW.

Best video about this car and it’s sibling. I am glad someone looked at this more in depth. This story is definitely deeper than a rebadged BMW. Which knowing Toyota, I figured it would be.
There’s a reason their cars are of such high quality. And, the new Supra will be such a car.

Idiots: ITS JUST A REBADGED Z4 NOT BUYING (while barely having money for a totalled GT86)
You're not an idiot for wanting a TOYOTA supra. I already have a BMW, I don't need another one dressed up as Toyota
Answered so many of my questions. Really great journalistic piece
Journalists don’t just copy what other people have said, they actually verify information before publishing it.
Honestly I’ve driven in one of these and the hp actually isn’t that bad and it drives nice but tbh I’d prefer the old Supra more
@@TheWallsocket "There’s lots of misinformation in this video, you should check other videos for actual facts if you’re really interested."
Translation: This video has actual research, so it doesn't validate my opinion.
"That’s an extremely simple detail to get wrong, and that makes me doubt everything else in the video as well."
Maybe because the people in these comments are the only ones who pretend to care about where the fucking shifters and steering wheels came from.
Just because they developed it separately doesn't mean they aren't allowed to use the readily-available parts of the other party, especially when it's being built in a BMW parts factory. Who cares about cost savings, amirite? What really matters is validating the ego of people who are never going to buy the car.
@@ootdega This video wasn't all that well researched. To claim it's an all new chassis that just happens to be near identical to the Z4 is bullshit. Also didn't do much research on the interior or BMW's offerings.
Thank you. This is a great video. I think this is a BMW Supra. Toyota badge only. Watched the specs in other videos that many of you have already watched. It just takes away from the mystique of the Supra legend because now we know that it's a fake, kind of like the Mercedes pickup, which is really a Nissan.
So in short terms you say toyota is screwed over by bmw
More like both bmw and toyota screwed us over
siddhesh pillai i 100% agree with you
toyota should have left the supra go out as the legend it was and name this something else, it sure as hell isn't a true supra
The Supra has iDrive......doesnt sound like independent Interieur Design to me
The iDrive is part of the platform so it makes sense the Supra also has it.
It has all to do with controlling the drive dynamics and close to nothing to do with Interior Design.
@@tjroelsma you are right
Nevertheless it probably feels like sitting in a BMW.
btw. I see this more like an advantage of the supra.
@ Jan Knight
Maybe it will, it all depends on how Toyota has implemented it.
Dont like it, swap a toyota head unit in. Pffftt like they are any better??
No manual? No interest.
Damn straight.
I totally agree, read this article: www.roadandtrack.com/car-shows/detroit-auto-show/a25909163/toyota-supra-manual-transmission-future-plans/
I second that!!!!
@Nero G Because they shouldn't waste time and capital on specs proven to not sell enough. Especially, as a publicly traded company.

@@capo_di_capi and why does that matter?
My VERY shrewd family in Spain realized that the Supra is .... a BMW 8... down to door handles and the MK5 is made of 100% BOSCH parts. And how does Spain know this???
If what your saying is true then these will be pretty expensive to fix if anything goes wrong.

It's true bro. You're right
Did you not watch the video?
I watched the video, and the arguments of that side were inconclusive. Some Japanese with a German education, some kind of joint development does not justify the fact that they stuck on that BMW Z4 a label of Toyota and called it Supra!
@@DreamCarsPro from the video, they didn't take an old Z4, refreshed it as a successor then slap a Toyota badge on it.
A new platform was co-developed by both manufacturers to be used for both the Z4 and supra, so the Z4 itself isn't like the old Z4.
Enough said
Because they envisioned one car only and made it happen.
Toyota and BMW were fighting over it being a new Z4 or a new Supra so they mashed both cars together.

@KanRyan.. I do not understand the sales side.. Most of the people that would buy the new Supra at it's price-point will be enthusiasts. Most enthusiasts want, and would buy a manual..
